Rabbit Hash store rising from the ashes Sarah Brookbank sbrookbank@communitypress.com

RABBIT HASH – For seven long months, driving into Rabbit Hash hasn’t been quite right. After fire destroyed the much-beloved landmark on Feb. 13, the salvaged wood took up residence in a nearby barn, leaving the small Ohio River town in western Boone County feeling empty. Now, things are starting to feel right again. Plans for the reconstructed General Store were approved and there’s no time to waste. The wood was unloaded from the barn, the crooked floors are in and walls are going up. Rivertown Construction Inc. is in Rabbit Hash every day, working quickly to put up walls so they can get the roof on in time to move inside for the winter. Ed Unterreiner, owner of Rivertown, said he’s ready to get the roof installed and the wood stove fired up so they can spend winter working on the intricacies of the old store. “I do a lot of remodeling and I get into old homes … but they’re

not constructed in this manner,” Unterreiner said. The General Store is unusually constructed. There aren’t really walls, just boards nailed up to posts. Unterreiner said working on the store is a lot like re-creating a crime scene. “We’re duplicating everything exactly the way it was, even if it was crooked,” Unterreiner said. “We’ll keep using as much of the original store as we can … The store needs to be crooked, that’s the way it was built. And if I see a piece of lumber I typically wouldn’t use, I use it.” The Rabbit Hash Historical Society wants to keep the General Store on the National Register of Historic Places. The drawings and plans had to be approved by national, state and local historical societies before the plans could move forward. Strict restrictions from the U. S. Department of the Interior state that wood from the same time period must be used in restoration of the General Store. People are still supporting

FORT ITCHELL – The 10th annual Northern entucky Veterans Day observance “Saluting Our Heroes” will be 2 p.m. Nov. 6 at Highland Cemetery in Fort itchell. Organizer Bob Hebbeler said in addition to honoring all veterans, active duty personnel, reservists and their families will be honored as well. “This is a way of locally honoring and thanking all Northern entucky veterans who have patriotically and faithfully served their country in the armed forces,” Hebbeler said. According to Hebbeler, this is also an important way of reminding the region to “never forget the selfless sacrifices that our veterans and their families have made in defending the rights and freedoms of our citizens and peoples around the

The guest speaker is Chief Warrant Officer 3 Thomas Weston, maintenance officer in Headquarters Company, 4 8th Engineer Battalion in Fort they stop and ask questions,” Unterreiner said. Don Clare, president of the Rabbit Hash Historical Society, said he believes the General Store will be ready in time for the next Old Timers Day. This year’s Old Timers Day was Sept. 3. Soon after the February fire, Clare and other members of the historical society began working with Gray and Pape, a local historic preservation firm, to prepare plans to rebuild the store. They

Thomas. Weston spent 32 years in the Army, 25 of them on active duty. He saw two combat deployments during Operation Desert Storm. Weston said he’s a little overwhelmed but honored to be speaking at the event. He’s going to talk about veterans groups and how veterans are supporting one another. He’s also going to address how important it is to express appreciation to veterans. “It always means a lot to me when people see me in uniform and come up and say, Thank you,’” Weston said. “It’s good to remember the commitment veterans have made. Being remembered is very important to us.” The observance event is sponsored by the ames A. Ramage useum and the city of Fort Wright. Want to continue the conversation? Tweet @MReinertReports

were worried it would take much longer than it has. “We’re approaching eight months. I think I was expecting to see so much more regulatory stuff that we had to go through,” Clare said. “Everything fell in place finally and we got the approval.” Clare said over the past few weeks Rivertown has been “cooking” when it comes to getting things together. “The two main buildings we tore down had the exact dimensions of lumber that we needed for this job … It’s really a godsend,” Clare said. Over the past eight months, two full houses and three partial houses had been donated to provide period-specific wood to the project. Clare said the full home, one in Bullittsburg and the other in Florence, Indiana, were so similar to the size of the General Store that it was like putting in an order at a lumber yard. If it were not for the donations of historical preservation services, architectural services and equipment donations and support from Boone County Fiscal Court, Clare said the store wouldn’t be as far along as it is.

First, if using onions, mushrooms, meat, bell peppers, etc., saute them in a bit of butter or olive oil before cooking the omelet. If using spinach or other greens, wilt them in a skillet with a little water. If using cheese, use shredded or thinly sliced cheese. Beat eggs with salt and pepper until combined. Heat butter on medium high heat in -10 inch nonstick pan, and when foaming subsides and ust starts to color a bit, pour in egg mi ture. Cook until edges start to set, a few seconds. With a spatula, gently push cooked portions from edges toward the center, tilting pan to one side so that uncooked eggs run to edge of pan. When top surface of eggs is set but still a bit moist looking, sprinkle with filling. Fold omelet in half with spatula. Slide omelet onto plate.

Eric Van Laningham’s Cooper High School boys cross country team has won the past four Class 3A Northern entucky regional championships in the postseason. In those four seasons, Cooper has won the Northern entucky Athletic Conference championship meet three of those years, losing to Covington Catholic in 2013. The two rivals have rarely been on the same course so far in the 2016 season, but reunited Oct. 8 at Idlewild Park in Burlington for this year’s N AC meet. What is not rare is aguar victories, as Cooper scored 31 points to edge CovCath, who had 45, and snare its third straight conference title. CovCath is a 3A team as well. “We haven’t seen CovCath in a month, and they’ve been

looking really strong,” said Van Laningham. “They have a really good team. I’m not sure we were better than they were but our guys were properly motivated to go after it. I thought it was our best race of the season.” uniors Arthur Sonzogni and Nathan Byrd hit the line in a photo finish for second place, with Sonzogni getting the nod. Senior ichael Hoffman was sixth, senior Tim Stidham seventh and freshman achary Armour, 13th. Armour, who his coach said is one of the top freshmen in the state, was a big key in the fifth spot. Cooper’s top four came in with a lot of bigmeet experience. “They put in a lot of good work this summer,” Van Laningham said. “They’re dedicated and motivated. Nathan and Arthur are both really competitive guys. It was ex-

citing to see Nathan catch Arthur at the end of the race. They said it was pretty fun. We have a couple of seniors who have been strong runners for us the last couple of years. Tim starts way in the back and by the end of the race he was top 10. He’s very consistent.” CovCath had three in the top 10, led by Owen Piatt in fourth, Will Akin in eighth, and Nick Eten in 10th. ichael essans and ack Hemsath were right behind Eten in 11th and 12th for the Colonels. The small-school teams ran at Idlewild as well, during a rare day this year in which most of the local powers were on the same course. Both divisions of boys ran together, then both divisions of girls, and the scores were extrapolated. In Division II girls, finishing second was St. Henry ju-

UNION - The Cooper volleyball team has had a season to remember so far. But the biggest goals are yet to come as the aguars get ready for the HSAA postseason. Cooper is 19-3 entering play Oct. 10. “One thing I believe we need to continue to improve on is to keep working on the little things and continuing to gel as a team on the floor,” said head coach ichelle Isaac. “Our team wants to be big in the postseason and make things happen so all their hard work pays off. “ Cooper’s three losses are all to some of the top teams in the state. The aguars challenged perennial Ninth Region favorite Notre Dame on opening night, winning the first two sets before losing the last three, including 15-12 in the fifth. Cooper also fell to defending Eighth Region champion North Oldham and 11th Region runner-up Tates Creek.

Brooke Reis was 14th for the Cru, and Ellie Plapp 1 th. St. Henry won the boys team race as well, beating V A by 10 points. The Crusaders had four of the top 10, led by junior Ethan Snyder in second. osh Gray, Conor Hicks and Branden Hansen were in spots 8-10, and Luke Brockman was 16th. Northern entucky’s best will be together again next Saturday, when many local teams will head to Lexington for the Lexington Catholic Invitational, which will be on the same course at entucky Horse Park that the state meet is held.

The Ryle girls’ golf team accomplished a first Oct. 12 with secondday play at the entucky High School Athletic Association state tournament at Bowling Green Country Club, but the Raiders weren’t content with merely showing up for the final round. “This was an all out team effort all the way,” Ryle coach eremy Thornton said. “The girls played well to the end.” The Raiders have a top-10 placing to show for it after coming away with a program-best sixth-place finish and a team score of 693. Leading the charge were sisters Brooklynn and Olivia DiPaolo. Brooklynn, a junior, tied for 2 th individually with a two-day score of 166. Olivia, a sophomore, shot 16 and tied for 30th. “Brooklynn played well and so did Olivia,” Thornton said. “Brooklynn helped herself and her teammates.” Brooklynn DiPaolo finished three shots behind local leader adison Smith 163 of Cooper and two shots behind Notre Dame’s Lauren Bracken 164 . Caitlyn Richardson 1 5 and adison leckner 185 also scored for Ryle. ayla Behne rounded out the Raiders’ top five. “This is just the third time we’ve been to state and we put up a solid high-placing finish,” Thornton said. “This is the best we’ve done. I can’t tell you how proud I am of the girls. The great thing is, I expect all 12 underclassmen back next year. We’re not going to skip a beat.” The Raiders leapfrogged threetime defending Region 6 champion Notre Dame at last week’s regional and won the crown for the first time in 15 years. Ryle finished fourth in boys golf with 624, its highest finish in team history. Ryan Clements was 19th with 152, ake Tarvin 2 th with 155, ustin Paoletti 42nd with 158, Tim Alexander 48th with 159 and ach Catalano 6th with 1 3. St. Henry’s Ethan Berling was 63rd with 164. Walton-Verona’s Logan Griffin shot a 90 in the boys tourney and missed the cut to round two.

The aguars are undefeated against the rest of Northern entucky, including defending 10th Region champ Scott, and have beefed up their schedule with a lot of other in-state schools. Along the way, Cooper earned the top seed in the 33rd District Tournament, hoping to win it for a second straight year. “Getting the number one seed for the second year in a row is a nice feeling that we are doing what we need to do to prepare for the postseason,” Isaac said. “Having an experienced group of players that are want-

ing to go out and prove something has been a good feeling. This team allows us to be versatile in our lineup to best match up with our opponent and the flow of the game.” aity Smith is in her senior year before she heads to play for Virginia Tech of the Atlantic Coast Conference. She has more than 200 kills for the season and was recently ranked 88th nationally in the senior class by PrepVolleyball.com, which in its analysis predicted she would make a big impact with the Hokies. Libero Hailey Gillispie and Rebecca Ruppel lead the defense. Chelan Beasley, organ elly, and Chloe Vanover lead a tall block up front. Carlie Wise and adie Buys have been strong at setter. “We have a very deep bench that players can come in at any given moment and help the team,” Isaac said. Cooper was set to finish the regular season at Dixie Heights Oct. 11 and at home vs. Simon enton Oct. 12. o ow a es We er on Twit ter @ We er ports

BOONE COUNT - Union city rivals Cooper and Ryle squared off Oct. with similar explosive offenses and identically dedicated student sections, who both wore pink for breast cancer awareness Friday night at Borland Stadium. In a night filled with fireworks – literally, as Ryle set off explosives after every Raider touchdown – it was the Raider defense stiffening when needed most in a 49-42 win. It was the district opener for the nearby neighbors in District 5 of Class 6A. Both teams will play Conner in the three-team district for seeding. “We’re fighting for dominance,” said Ryle running back acob Chisholm. “Everybody knows we’re big rivals. We want to be the Union champs. Cooper has taken us the last two years. We really wanted to come out here and beat them. We punched them in the mouth they punched us in the mouth. It was a big game.” Ryle’s defense stepped up on three key second-half drives. The second came with 5 30 to play in the fourth quarter, when Cooper had fourth and from the Ryle 15. The Ryle defense forced Cooper senior quarterback erod Lonaker to scramble and he was tackled short of the first down. Tied 42-42, Ryle set Cooper back when senior eremy Pendelton sacked Lonaker on first down, and more Raider pressure forced Lonaker to scramble for three yards on second down. Then Ryle forced an incomplete pass on third down and a punt. Ryle took over at the 50, and Chisholm churned out small chunks of yardage before Cole Burch took over and scored from yards out with 10 minutes to play in the game, accounting for the final TD of the contest. With 1 52 to go in the fourth quarter, Cooper took over at its 5-yard line, down 49-42, but couldn’t get a first down. “Cooper has a great offense,” said Ryle head coach ike Engler. “Our offense played pretty good tonight. halftime, our defense made adjustments and got their composure in the second half. They made plays when they had to make plays. That’s the makings of a good football team.” Defensive plays were rare in the first half, which ended in a 35-all tie. Cooper punted once on a three-and-out drive. Ryle came up empty on two drives, one in which a receiver dropped a wide-open pass up the middle that would have resulted in a score from 0-plus yards out, the other when senior B Tanner organ was intercepted by ustin Schlarman on a Hail ary pass to the goal line. Besides that, the two rivals and their offensive standouts lit up the scoreboard for 10 touchdowns, trading throughout the half with Ryle taking a seven-point lead and Cooper tying it. Cooper had 345 yards in the half to 28 for Ryle. Chisholm returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown and had 122 yards rushing on five carries in the half, including a 58-yarder on Ryle’s first play from scrimmage. organ completed six passes for 11 yards in the half, most of that on a 0-yard TD pass to Bryce Ashley, who broke multiple tackles while running the last 30 yards to the endzone. On the Cooper side, Lonaker completed 16 passes for 205 yards in the first half, 10 of those to Indiana State recruit Dante Hendrix for 110 yards. Shea Burns had a pair of 28-yard catches. aden ackson had an 84-yard touchdown run, part of his 12 yards in the half. “This is the first game we’ve really

been in a dogfight in,” Chisholm said. “It’s a solid performance by our defense to get some stops at the end. I was yelling. It was amazing.” Chisholm had 218 rushing yards. organ threw for 156 as Ryle had 460 yards offense. Lonaker ended with 25 completions for 301 yards, Hendrix 13 for 155. Lonaker had four TD catches. ackson had 148 yards on the ground with the two scores. Engler said a key halftime adjustment was stopping him and the running game. Cooper had 469 yards offense. “Cooper exploited some things in our defense and we have to make some corrections because there’s a good chance we’ll see them again at some point,” Engler said. “It was good to get in a game where we had to make plays at the end. We hadn’t played a full game, our starters in the second half, for a while . For them to step up the way they did, you want games like this.” Both teams will continue their county rivalries this Friday. Ryle will play its second and final District 5 game at Conner. Cooper will host Boone Count in a non-district game. Conner won 44-0 at Campbell County in a 6A game to improve to 6-1. The teams are in separate districts. Conner held a comfortable 1 -point lead at halftime and was able to score 13 in the third quarter to put the game away. Walker Buelow finished with 220 passing yards and two touchdowns on 14 completions. Both TDs went to Darrell arshall. Armand ackson had two TD runs. Boone Count lost 52-0 at Simon enton in their 6A District 6 opener to drop to 0- overall. a ton erona beat Gallatin County 21-3 to improve to 5-3 and 3-0 in 2A district play. The Bearcats have outscored their three district foes 92-3. The Bearcats will finish district play at home against Trimble County 1- this Friday and can lock up the district title. o ow a es We er on Twitter @ We er ports

Golf fans know that the aster’s or the U.S. Open are a much tougher challenge than a regular golf tournament. It’s no different at the high school level, as the entucky state tournament in Bowling Green is a step above what most high school golfers in the state see before they get there. In her second time at the HSAA state tournament Oct. 4-5, adison Smith was more accustomed to the experience. She made the cut to day two and finTHANKS TO BECKY SMITH ished the 36 holes with a 163 Madison Smith works on her -86 , finish- swing. ing 24th overall. She was the top Northern entucky finisher. “I thought it was a really good experience,” said the Cooper High School junior. “I didn’t play as good as I hoped but it was definitely fun being down there.” At the Bowling Green Country Club, conditions are meant to test the state’s top golfers. The rough is thicker, the greens are trickier, and there are big crowds on every hole. The course played longer on day two for competitors. “It played tougher the second day but not as tough as my score showed,” Smith said. “The course played tough in general. Every hole is lined with threes and that makes it tougher to hit the fairways, which makes for tougher approach shots.” Smith had a strong season overall, including winning the Northern entucky Athletic Conference championship for the second year in a row. She was named the N AC Player of the ear. o ow a es We er on Twitter @ We er ports

About one in three people in the United States between the ages of 65 and 4 has some level of hearing loss. Loss of hearing can lead to many challenges including not being able to hear warning signals or the telephone. It can also make it difficult to enjoy visiting with friends and family. The most common cause of age-related hearing issues is changes in the inner ear. Health conditions including diabetes and high blood pressure may also contribute to hearing loss.

To reduce the risk of noise-induced hearing challenges decrease the

amount of time you are exposed to the noise, protect your ears with effective ear plugs or muffs, and avoid loud noises when possible. Hearing problems can be serious.
