COLLEGE CORNER Battista on dean’s list

Rachel Battista of Burlington was recently named to the dean’s list for 2010 spring semester at the Northeastern University. To achieve dean’s list distinction, students must have grade point average of 3.25 or greater and carry no single grade lower than a C during the course of their college career. Boone County resident Arrianne Byrum was recently inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society at Eastern Kentucky University. Alpha Lambda Delta honors freshmen who have attained a 3.5 cumulative grade point average for their freshman year. Arrianne, who is a biology major, completed her freshman year with a 4.0 average and has been named to the Dean's List and Presdent's List each semester.

Alumni scholars named at Boone Co. High School The Boone County High School Alumni Scholarship Committee received 12 scholarship applications from the 2010 graduating class. They all submitted questionnaires, and wrote a paper about “What BCHS Means to Me.” The judges read their papers and conducted personal interviews with each applicant to determine the winners. According to judges, all the students represented the class of 2010 very well. Their themes and interviews were interesting and made the committee’s choice a difficult task. The winners are Emily Baur, Megan Scholer and Sara Perkins. Emily Baur was the $1,500 scholarship winner. She maintained a 3.75 GPA. She was very active in several clubs, service organizations and cheerleading. Baur plans to attend Northern Kentucky University and major in education. She hopes to return to BCHS as a teacher at the high school level. Baur’s family tradition runs deep. Her mother, sister and aunt were in the band; her uncle and cousin played football. “BCHS is just part of the family,” Baur said. Megan Scholer was awarded a $2,000 scholarship. She maintained a 3.6 GPA and was active in band, Science Club and German Club. She plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University and major in music and biology. She has a scholarship in music from EKU. Scholer plans to return to

teach music and science in the Boone County school system. She loves to read. She is accomplished in math, science, language and history, but her passion is music. Sara Perkins was the $2,500 scholarship winner. She maintained a 3.8 GPA and was active in the band and Winterguard. Perkins takes care of her 18-yearold autistic brother about seven hours per day while her parents work and attend school. Perkins plans to attend Thomas More College and study nursing. She was awarded a Presidential Scholarship to attend Thomas More. She is interested in childbirth and obstetrics nursing.

Boone residents named to dean’s list

Erica Dawn Ferguson, Travis R. Huffman and Michelle L. Thompson, all of Hebron; Frances Gadd, Faith Glisson and Keith Morris, all of Union; Margaret Lynn Taylor of Verona; and Tyler Jordan Hopperton and Kayla E. Ziegler, both of Walton, recently made the dean’s list for the 2010 spring semester at the College of Mount St. Joseph. To achieve the dean’s list, a student must earn a minimum 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale while enrolled with a minimum of six credit hours. Sean W. Freeman and Forrest M. Simmons, both of Hebron; and Cynthia A. Tope of Burlington were recently named to the president’s list for the 2010 spring semester at Western Kentucky University. Casey E. Bray, Anna V. Walter, Jacob T. Ryle, Zachary K. Ryle and Elizabeth M. Farnsworth, all of Burlington; and Abigail L. Egbers and Paul R. Kasinski, both of Hebron, were named to the dean’s list. Students making the dean’s list have a gradepoint average of 3.4 to 3.79 in a 4.0 scale. Students on the president’s list have GPAs of 3.8 to 4.0. To be eligible for the either list, students must have at least 12 hours of coursework that semester. Six Boone County natives and members of Transylvania’s class of 2010 have been recognized for involvement in the Transylvania Senior Challenge. These members are James Conner, Kyle Herbstreit, Courtney Johnson, Adam Littrell, Anne Wilson and Melissa Woods.
