It’s OK for you to leave grass clippings on lawn Question: Do you recommend catching and bagging grass clippings every time I mow? Answer: At this time of year, with the grass growing as fast as it is, in order to keep from making rows of “hay,” it may occasionally be necessary to bag the clippings for the sake of appearance. Usually, however, it is actually better for the lawn if you leave the clippings ... and it is certainly less work for you. Mowing grass is a big enough task by itself. Therefore, you may be glad to hear that you don’t also need to bag the clippings. There are few if any good

reasons to regularly bag clippings after mowing cool-season grasses such as tall fescue and KenMike Klahr tucky blueHorticulture grass. It’s to Concerns better leave clippings because they add valuable nutrients to the lawn. People can skip one fertilizer application a year by leaving clippings that provide a natural, organic fertilizer. Another reason not to bag clippings is that lawn waste increases landfill use and costs. On those few

occasions when you do catch your clippings, be sure to add them to your own compost pile rather than putting them in bags on the curb. Grass clippings add nitrogen to the compost pile, helping it to heat up more quickly. However, the best thing for the grass is to simply leave the clippings on the lawn. Clippings do not contribute to thatch buildup. Thatch is a tightly intermingled organic layer of grass roots and stems that forms on the soil surface. Actually, a little thatch or surface organic debris helps moderate the soil temperature and retains some moisture. It

also makes the lawn more “cushiony.” Clippings normally do not increase disease problems when the lawn is properly mowed (removing no more than one-third to one-half of the grass blade length at each mowing). When grass is mowed properly, clippings will be evenly dispersed rather than forming a windrow on the surface. You do not have to use a “mulching mower.” Any rotary, side-discharge mower with a sharp blade will cut clippings into short lengths and do an excellent job of dispersing them. Of course, you will still need to follow the one-third to one-

half the grass blade removal rule, and this might mean mowing more frequently than you have been doing. If the grass becomes too tall while you are on vacation or due to continued rainy weather, try to raise the mowing height enough that you won’t be removing over half the length of the grass blades. Then come back and mow again at the normal height about three days later. Each time you mow, it will cut and distribute the long clippings laying on the grass from the previous mowing, and they will disappear after a few mowing times.
