WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR I feel like so much has happened since our last issue! We allocated two Travel Bursaries to attend CILIP’s Big Day and AGM. There was a disappointingly low number of applications, even after we extended the deadline, but I hope that our plans to offer these types of bursaries more often will make our members more willing to apply in the future.

We’ve confirmed the date for our Member’s Day on 9th February 2015; save the date now! As part of the day we will be hosting our CILIP Debate session, see page 6 for more details.

Member’s Day details ................ 6 Fun and Games .......................... 6

We also hosted, as part of our series of informal networking events, a Twilight Tour of The Hive in Worcester. A photo spread is on pages 4 and 5. Again, we had a small turnout, but everyone had a great time, and adjourned after the Tour to a local pub which sells superb Pie and Mash! We’re planning more of the smaller, informal networking events across the region in the future. If you would like to host something in your area, please let us know at cilipwmmn@gmail.com

On 20th September, I attended the CILIP Big Day and AGM in Bristol and received a £50 travel bursary from the CILIP West Midlands Member Network. This event was a free mini-conference for CILIP members and hosted a variety of inspiring speakers and the CILIP AGM. This was the second CILIP conference I attended in 2014 after the Health Libraries Group conference in July and once again I was not disappointed. The whole day was really enjoyable. From the registration to the close of the day, I was able to chat with fellow professionals in a variety of different roles. I consider these networking opportunities to be really useful and look forward to any chance to learn what CILIP members are up to in other sectors. I certainly took some useful ideas back home. In the lead up to the event I was looking forward to the keynote speaker, William Sieghart. After hearing that he had been commissioned to undertake and independent review of public library provision in England, and having previously worked in public libraries, I imagined that he would have some interesting things to say. William’s speech was fascinating and demonstrated that he understood many of the challenges and opportunities facing public library provision in England. The keynote speech was concluded after a lively Q&A and followed by presentations from the nominees for the Libraries Change Lives Award, Leeds Library and Information Service, Hertfordshire Libraries and Northamptonshire Libraries. The winner- Northamptonshire Libraries with their innovative business information service which encouraged self-employment opportunities and business start-ups. While there was lively chatter and debate throughout, there was complete silence during the presentation by Jan Parry- The essential role of information professionals: the Hillsborough story. Jan delivered a wonderful Jan Parry speech on the role of information professionals throughout the investigations into the tragedy. From managing and compiling the many witness statements to supporting the many families during the publication of the independent report, this proved to be the highlight of the conference for many. I would really like to thank the West Midlands Member Network Committee, specifically Lisa [Basini], for helping to support my attendance at the CILIP Big Day. I would encourage anyone to apply for bursaries provided by regional networks. They support your CPD and can provide you with the opportunity to contribute towards debates and discussions with other CILIP members. I have come away from the event with other opportunities to be involved in CILIP and will undoubtedly use this experience in my MCLIP Revalidation in the near future.

I prepared to travel by train but later choose the coach from Wolverhampton break at Birmingham and then Bristol coach station where I chartered a taxi to double tree by Hilton's hotel arrived at 9:35 am, then immediately did my registration collected my conference papers and ushered into the conference hall. Getting into the hall, I felt completely out of place because it was my first International conference, I saw a lot of people from different calibre some were standing chatting while some were sitting waiting for the conference to start. I found an empty seat sat down and watched people as they discussed suddenly one of the attendee Grace noticed and confronted me by greeting then pointed dignitaries of the occasion where she suggested I could go and meet them; I met with chief Executive. The President, CILIP Treasurer and other dignitaries present. When the conference starts by ten o'clock, I was relaxed and excited by the welcome address of CILIP President Barbara Band. A series of videos about libraries changes lives was shown. The first speaker or key note speech by William Sieghart was an eye opener when he talked about problems affecting libraries in UK, particularly public libraries where he urged communities to seek government intervention in Public libraries for modern and functional library equipment. RECOMMENDATION ♦

CILIP should increase the number of conference sponsorship.

Librarians need to regularly update their CILIP subscriptions. ♦ Librarians need to update their knowledge through education and conferences. ♦ Communities need to show government their library’s needs. ♦ Libraries need to implement new innovative and Technological facilities.

that we were present - unfortunately I didn’t have their permission to take their pictures, so I am unable to demonstrate this!

I really enjoyed the visit and discussing
