World War I at Sea

A century past, World War I was a shock to Victorian/Edwardian sensibilities, the beginnings of “total war”. There were less slaughter and more strategy at sea, where the Entente Powers tried to blockade the Central Powers while fighting off German submarines. Why did the Germans provoke the British into a warship-building race and push the USA into the war through unrestricted submarine warfare? How were the submarines defeated? (Sonar, radar, and aircraft carriers were weapons of the next war.)
