RIVER CITY CAFE
The project aimed to create a space in Richmond for people to enjoy food and company, relax, connect, and reflect on the role of an urban cafe. Key considerations included designing an accessible environment for those with mobility aids, using materials sourced exclusively from the Mid-Atlantic region, and establishing branding and a restaurant menu. Inspired by the James River, the design drew from its rocky landscape and the dynamics of cascading water. The staff areas (coffee bar, kitchen, lounge) mimic the gradual flow of water over rocks, while the dining spaces represent the faster, multi-directional movement of the surging river. Customers moving through the space mirror the rapid flow of water around Richmond’s urban setting.

RVA COMMUNITY CENTER
The project aimed to create a space for older adults to connect with nature and each other. The site was the historic Anderson building at 907 1/2 W Franklin Street in Richmond, VA, encompassing approximately 4,600 square feet on the first floor and the surrounding area. The facilities included an art therapy classroom, talk therapy, cafe, game center, and meditation + yoga studio. This space primarily served Richmond residents seeking an inclusive refuge away from home, fostering a sense of unity and belonging within the RVA community connected to VCU’s campus.

ACCOMMODATING DIFFERENCES
“Accommodating differences in a therapeutic space” continues with the common theme of focusing on the human body for design development, emphasizing accommodation for those with disabilities. Inspired by the notion that accessible design should be more than practical and dimensional adaptations. I developed an interior and exterior space for therapeutic bathing that enhances the quality of life for it’s user(s).

The current project I am working on is in the design development phase heading towards the construction document phase. Our clients consist of a jeweler and their partner, who operates a coffee business. The project challenge is to design their first brick-and-mortar retail and studio space as well as the interior for the building addition they are planning to construct on top of the existing building to serve as their personal residence located at 401 W Broad Street. The Jeweler and their partner are involved in the Amazon Aid Foundation and are planning to position their business establishment as a community activism space to raise awareness of the issues surrounding gold mining and deforestation in regions along the Amazon River and its impact on sustainability globally. It is important to the client that we design with sustainability at the forefront.
