110 West Main

The client asked our studio to bring an edge to Historic Livingston, Montana. The upper level of this historic downtown building has been designed as an extremely contemporary cooperative office as well as a complete renovation_adaptation the Main store front and lower level bar. Exposed interior brick walls become the backdrop for a series of insertions, the primary of which is an intricately detailed faceted, undulating wall made of CNC steel ribs with walnut veneer plywood panels. The July 2007 issue of Residential Architect notes, “...the dynamic, faceted walls inside this on-the-boards commercial project...showcases the firm’s sculptural approach to space.

Wapiti Valley Residence

The house and complex is located in the rugged and beautifully austere Wapiti Valley in Wyoming. The design of this house is a direct reflection of the clients aggressive artistic preferences, while also intentionally blending the native, rocky landscape by working with colors, shadow, shapes and textures to create a forum of camouflage. Two rammed earth walls become the base out of which the house is grounded; steel, glass, parklex, massaranduba, and bonderized metal and walls layer and collage to embed the house in the open landscape.

RN Residence

The RN Residence is located in the rolling hills west of Livingston, Montana with unbelievable views of the Absoraka Mountain Range and distant views of the Crazy Mountains and East Boulder Valley. The home is an exploration of sustainable design and building practices with grey water reuse, rainwater collection, passive and active solar systems, and select sustainable materials. The program for the residence was conceived as a series of alternating private and public spaces. The private spaces are designed with varying degrees of enclosure, materiality and height. Each private space’s walls “wrap from the exterior too the interior maintaining the exterior skin throughout. The in-between was designed as either a threshold condition or public space, all the while taking advantage of the views to the south and south east . The form of the roof relates to the adjacent ridge line mountain tops.

WINSTON RESIDENCE

During the winter of 2008 Sight Architecture began design of a small adaptive reuse project in the North side of Bozeman, Montana. The client is a entrepreneurial film maker, bachelor and out door enthusiast. He was willing to try something progressive and responsive to the eclectic and industrial nature of the North side of Bozeman. The client specified design issues to be addressed. They are a separation between work and living space, some visual and experiential connection to the surrounding mountains, reuse of existing structure, and an attached garage specific to a filming van. The existing house is a 1000 square foot one story, railroad house with a relatively simple plan. The site is smaller than typical lots in bozeman but still required the standard setbacks. A street and alley respectively were to the East and West of the site. The client owned the adjacent North lot procuring views of the Bridger mountain range. trees and views of the Gallatin mountain range were to the South of the site. The work and living space were split into two levels. The work space including a studio and projector space fit comfortably into the existing footprint of the original house. The garage was placed to the north of the existing house. On the second level the living space took form from the exterior deck space and views of the Gallatin mountain range to the South. The bottom level was treated in stucco with small manipulations to existing openings. The second level was treated with parklex siding and corrugated steel roofing. water catchment, and solar energy were employed for sustainability strategies.

COMPETITION PARQUE LA LIBERTAD

Beginning in May of 2009, three offices engaged in a proposal for one of costa ricas largest and most important design competitions, Parque La Libertad . The offices are Jaime Rouillon Arquitectura of San Jose, Costa Rica, AE Arquitectos of Medellin, Colombia, and the Olin Partnership of Philidelphia, United States. Each office respectively was responsible for one of the following specialities; architectural design, urban design, and landscape design. JRA assumed leadership and coordinated design in order to meet the submission deadline of July 3rd 2009. The competition called for the master plan of a 32 hectare park and cultural center to be located in an underdeveloped and impoverished area of San Jose named Desamparados. The area around Desamparados is home to nearly 400,000 people and will increase in population of over 1 million inhabitants by 2050. The site was formerly occupied by Holcim, a concrete plant, and is covered in abandoned manufacturing and administrative structures. The existing network of infrastructure and buildings was specified in the competition guidelines to be a major consideration in the design of the park and cultural center. The competition consisted of four main units or complementary activities: the arts, urban activities, the environment and the enterprises including mypimes. 52|professional_portfolio

In May of 2008 Jaime Rouillon Arquitectura began design of a fourteen story multi-use high rise to be built in Barrio California, San Jose, Costa Rica. The client was interested in creating a project san jose had ever seen before yet still working within margins of profitability. The client hired a team of marketers and developers to assist in the programming project. It was determined the program be split into four main units. They are parking, commerical, office, and medical space. the site is located south of the anitgua aduana site on a prominent corner in barrio california. Three major issues relating to structure, programming, and light were analyzed in determining the overall massing and distribution of the project. In costa rica anything over fourteen stories becomes to expensive structurally to build. Furthermore, due to a high ground water table and soil type anything lower than three levels sub grade becomes to expensive to build. In addition, the project required 60cm concrete columns 6 meter on center. to the north and east the site shared property lines limiting a certain amount of light. The west and south sides of the site experienced the two harshest exposures of sun thus requiring a certain tectonic or solar strategy. Based on the above mentioned information programming was stratified into the following; 3 levels of parking sub grade, 2 levels of commercial space, 3 levels of parking space, 5 levels of medical space, and 4 levels of office space. Having parking above and below grade required a centrally located core and a fire stair on the south side of the site. The geometry and tech tonics of the project assisted in the development of a light strategy. To the west and south we employed perforated aluminum screens and narrow openings. We used the setback guidelines and the geometry of the site in determining a strategy for eastern light exposure. The site in plan geometrically is a parallelogram. in section a parallelogram responds to the setback requirements allowing light to penetrate on the east side.

hotel torremolinos_penthouse

In December of 2008 Jaime Rouillon Arquitectura began design on a hotel renovation and penthouse in La Sabana, San Jose, Costa Rica. The design included remodel of eighty six standard rooms, eleven suites, lobby, gift store, restaurant, kitchen, three court spaces, the addition of an elevator, the North facade and the West facade. In addition the client wanted two 300 m2 penthouses to be incorporated on the top level of the hotel. The hotel faces North and West while the South and East abut property lines. The hotel has three court spaces. One of the court spaces contains a pool and access to the bar and restaurant. The vertical and repetitive facade responds to the harsh western sun, degrees of privacy and conceptually the varied and diverse lives temporarily residing within. Punctuating the west facade are five trellised covered court spaces on the penthouse level. The north facade plays off the repetitive and varied facade of the west but with smaller and more infrequent openings. The interior spaces were designed to create a uniquely cost rican experience and feel. The office invited interior consultants to brainstorm and present economical yet Costa Rican options applicable to hotel standards and design. Once a palette had been established, images, colors, furniture and textures unique to Costa Rica were employed throughout the hotel. Like the facade, each room got a different and varied treatment for paint and image application. One repetitive print of trees was used throughout the public spaces including the hallways and restaurant. The floors received a 3 mm layer of stained dark red concrete much like

the color of the costa rican coffee bean before harvest. The court spaces were designed to be more interactive with the patron. This included more deck space, covered space, sitting areas and more direct access to the pool, restaurants and bar. The two penthouses were specifically designed for the client. throughout the penthouses ample spaces for entertaining and engaging the exterior abound.

CCAA_Centura Cultura Antigua Aduana

In May of 2008 Jaime Rouillon Arquitectura began design on a master plan at the Antigua aduana site in Barrio California, San Jose, Costa Rica. The master plan includes a park, a cultural center, botanical garden and cultural membrana. In addition, the master plan must incorporate and respect the existing historical structures. The two buildings on site of most importance are the Antigua Aduana, the old customs building, built in 1891 and Cuno, the old mint building, built in 1917. The ministry of culture and patrimonial (organization overseeing historical architecture) oversaw and approved all design decisions. THe project is envisioned as a bridge between what was historically to what could be a cultural generator and incubator for the future of Costa Rican culture. The cultural center contains program for gardens, music, dance, art, video, a tech center, theater, restaurants, stores, children activities, education and outdoor spaces. The site is unusual in San Jose due to its overall length of 700 feet. The Antigua Aduana is almost 500 feet with an additional 150 feet of structure added on in the 1980s. Originally 18 blue sliding doors on each side of the building provided access to load and unload goods. The site lacks any definable points of access or entry resulting from unidentifiable boundaries on the East and West sides. The primary concept of the project was to expose the qualities of Aduanas functionality and linearity by creating entry or visual connection to Antigua Aduana on a West to East axis. A major connector and entry was established by breaking a newer section of Aduana while leaving intact and exposing the original structure. The topography to the east allowed program to be sunken into the ground thus maintaining a strong visual connection to antigua aduana. To the west a botanical garden, and ramp became the primary acts of intervention. The cultural membrana or canopy, a free spanning structure, extended from the main entry and spanned the distance between the Cuno and Aduana structures. Two concepts for the membrana were developed in reflect the structural spacing of Aduana and Cuno. 74|professional_portfolio

Renderings Atelier Waecther

Ben Waecther, a Portland, Oregon designer, was updating the studio imagery to prepare for the launch of his new website and marketing campaign. The renderings needed to establish a consitent and dynamic imagery reflective of his simple yet sophisticated architectural designs. Instead of using the computer to develop 3-d modeling we photographed 1/4 foam core models and rendered them in photoshop. The models had a pixelated quality we emulated in the surrounding environment. The most important part of the rendering was to maintain certain light qualities and subtleties.
