Things Above from Fr. Bilot The Scriptures, starting with Genesis, remind us and exhort us to respect the gift of Creation. God created the earth for us; therefore, the earth is a gift. Hopefully, as with any gift given to us, we appreciate it, respect it and, ultimately, share it. The excitement of receiving any gift reflects the beauty of God's creating power and love unfolding in our lives. Hopefully, each day, we take a moment to appreciate the gift of life, the many people in our lives, and the abundance of material possessions that make our lives fruitful and comfortable. In appreciation for all the gifts given to us, we are entrusted with stewardship. Stewardship is recognizing the blessings from God in our lives and responding to this love by using our time, talent and treasure to bring about the Kingdom of God in the world around us. Our Finance Council is keenly aware of the generosity everyone displays here at Divine Child. The Council is entrusted with the treasure that comes into the parish. The Council’s job is to ensure that we balance our budget and do not waste the resources given to us through your generosity. With this being said, on page nine of this week's bulletin, we are posting the Balance Sheet for the Divine Child fiscal year, July 1, 2017 - June 30, 2018. As you can see, we have balanced the budget, and we are in the black. I am grateful to all of you for your financial contributions which make our parish a wonderful place to encounter the Lord and the many gifts He desires to bestow upon us. With everyone working together and sharing our gifts, we are able to continue to do the work of Proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ and bringing people to the Lord and helping all of us to grow in holiness. I thank the Lord for your goodness, kindness and generosity. On Monday, October 8, I and approximately 50 other people will be traveling to France to visit the historic shrines and sights we have been blessed to receive through our loving God. Each day of the pilgrimage, we will have the opportunity to celebrate Mass in beautiful, faith-filled sites that hold the remains of our revered saints and hosts millions of pilgrims throughout the ages. We will end our pilgrimage in Lourdes, entrusting our parish and our lives to Our Blessed Mother, who will bring us to the heart of Jesus. If anyone has prayer intentions that they would like me to bring on the pilgrimage, please write them down and drop them off at the rectory by Friday, October 5. Finally, last weekend at all the Masses, we read a letter from Archbishop Vigneron regarding the clergy sex abuse and the steps being taken into the future to ensure the safety of our children. If you were not here this past weekend, I hope the parish you attended read the letter (as all the parishes were required to read the letter by the Archbishop). If you did not get a chance to hear the Archbishop’s letter, or read the letter from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, please go to www.aod.org (Archdiocese of Detroit) and www.usccb.org (United States Council of Catholic Bishops) to read these letters. It is important that we are all aware of what is happening and how we must move forward. Know of my prayers, Fr. Jim Bilot
God needed someone to care for His flock and so He created YOU! God bless you for the time you give, the work you do, and the loving care you offer to your Divine Child Parish! We love you Fr. Jim and wish you a blessed Birthday!

Encounter, Grow, Witness In the pastoral letter, Unleash the Gospel, the Archbishop has focused on developing a three-fold model of evangelization that helps us to develop a strategy of evangelization that people can understand and work at together. The process of “encounter – grow – witness” allows us to speak about where we might be in our own journey of discipleship and conversion and how we might help others walk that same journey, too. Encounter – Evangelization is not merely teaching others about the faith, the different doctrines and beliefs, but introducing people to the person of Jesus. It is when we, as individuals, realize that Jesus calls us into a relationship with Himself, that our life takes on a new purpose and meaning. In the Gospels, one thing that never happened was that people met Jesus and walked away bored or disinterested. No! In meeting Jesus, lives were always changed. Some people chose to reject Jesus and walk away while others decided to follow Him and surrender their lives to Him and His plan for their lives. Each of us are called to have this same experience of meeting Jesus that changes our lives in a radical way. As a parish, it is our mission to facilitate opportunities for people to encounter the Lord in a radical way. Grow – The path of following Jesus is not an instantaneous thing. Following Jesus involves daily commitment to growing in our identity as disciples. In Acts 2:42, after the powerful experience of Pentecost, we read that the earliest disciples “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” These four pillars of scripture (apostles’ teaching), fellowship (community), sacraments (breaking of bread), and prayer are the essential steps for growing in our identity as disciples. The path of discipleship is not something that we can graduate from because we are called to constant and consistent growth. Witness – Archbishop Vigneron explains that “our goal is to extend the kingdom of God on earth by making the world a place where Christ is known and loved, so that as many people as possible are brought with us to eternal life.” A disciple is not one who merely knows Jesus and learns about Him, but they must be a person who shares Jesus with others. The end goal of our work in the parish is to evangelize. The end goal of every Christian should also be to evangelize, to witness their faith to the world. Fr. Matthew Hood The text of the letter can be found online at the site UnleashTheGospel.org (Section 4.9 of Unleash the Gospel)

Music Matters by Matt Simpson Twenty-one questions; A mini examination of conscience on the Mass Thumbing through Facebook one day, I stumbled upon a series of questions posed by Fr. Christopher Smith of Prince of Peace Church, a parish and school in South Carolina. Fr. Smith posed an initial question. He asked, “what would a nonCatholic Christian see from our example if they watched us in the Church at Mass?" These questions affected me and forced me to examine my own behavior at Mass. So often I find myself tuning out, keeping time with empty responses and motion. As each of us is challenged to be a missionary disciple to our world, could our behavior make the Mass more appealing to an outsider? How can we set the Mass apart from everything else we do in our lives? I hope you find these points engaging and thought-provoking. These are Fr. Smith’s original words. 1. Do we see Sunday as a joyful occasion that we have the privilege to participate in as sons and daughters of Christ? 2. Is Sunday special – different from all other days? 3. Do we dress for Mass not by putting on whatever clothes happen to be available, but by dressing outwardly and inwardly for the wedding feast of the Lamb? 4. Do we realize each one of us was created by God to worship Him and that all time belongs to Him? Or, do we begrudge Him one hour of our week for Mass? 5. Do we arrive early for Mass to pray, focus and prepare for the most important thing we do each week? Or, are we running around like a chicken with its head cut off sailing into Mass distracted and not ready to pray? [Families with children, we understand this is not always feasible.] 6. Mass is not a spectator sport. The fruitfulness of the Mass within us depends on the disposition of our heart that we bring to it. We must choose to engage it by disciplining our wandering minds by focusing on every word, gesture and ceremony of the Mass. 7. Are we watching the Mass with eyes of faith? 8. Are we listening to Mass with ears and hearts open to the truth proclaimed in the readings and prayers? 9. Are we tasting with devotion and reverence of the Holy Eucharist? 10. Are we grasping the sacred by crossing ourselves, kneeling, bowing, genuflecting, standing and sitting not just because it is a ritual, but with purpose and love? 11. Are we smelling the incense, candles, flowers – the Church itself? Do we engage our entire bodies in worship – all 5 senses – or do we just sit there and wait it out? 12. When we come into Church, do we plunge our hands into the Holy water font and remind ourselves that we were signed, sealed and delivered by our Baptism and Confirmation as children of God and heirs to heaven? 13. Do we genuflect by going all the way down on our right knee slowly as a sign of Adoration to Christ as King who reigns from the throne of love in the tabernacle?
Page 55 Page
14. Do we put aside all earthly cares before Mass, get into a zone of prayer and enter a space of worship? 15. Do we carefully observe silence before and after Mass? Do we remember that this Church is the gate of Heaven and the only person to whom we should be speaking is to God? 16. Do we say the responses clearly and distinctly? Or, do we mumble? 17. Do we sing the ordinary of the Mass and the hymns with the beautiful voice God gave us? 18. Gentlemen of the congregation – you are the priests of the domestic church. That means that your children and everyone else are looking for you to be a model of worship and prayer. What contrary witness do men give when not picking up the music sheet to sing or slouching and mumbling? 19. Do we bow upon the name of Jesus? 20. When we come up to Holy Communion, do we assume an attitude of reverence and devotion and then allow ourselves to be fed by the Body of Christ? 21. Judas was the only one who left the Last Supper early. And, he did it to betray our Lord. Do not leave Mass early. If we can’t stand to be in Church for an hour a week, how will we spend eternity with God? Matt Simpson

Archdiocesan News September 20, 2018 The Communications Department of the Archdiocese of Detroit shares Archbishop Vigneron’s message in support of planned actions by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops addressing clergy sexual abuse and bishop accountability. "I wholeheartedly welcome and support this statement by the Administrative Committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Know that I will continue to work with prayerful diligence in the Archdiocese of Detroit, to ensure we continue our commitment to protecting everyone – especially children – and holding all clergy accountable for their actions, including bishops like myself. "As a member of the Administrative Committee, I prayerfully accompanied my brother bishops in discussions to develop this message. My input was informed by the many letters I have received from thoughtful individuals sharing words both of encouragement and critique. I feel the pain of the community and am grateful to those who have urged the Church to embrace true reform. "As is necessary, this statement presents concrete actions that will lead our Church toward a future of increased accountability and healing. We, the bishops of this country, pledge to establish stronger reporting systems for allegations of abuse against bishops; develop clearer policies regarding bishops who have been removed from ministry; and implement a specific code of conduct for bishops regarding sexual abuse. Lastly, we reiterate our full support of an investigation into the conduct of former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick. "As encouraged as I am by these announcements, I would like to recall a statement I made earlier this summer, which remains true today: ‘We can never become complacent.’ Here in the Archdiocese of Detroit, we must view the actions of the USCCB as inspiration, not as a finish line. To that end, I have asked all priests in the Archdiocese to prayerfully discern our ongoing efforts to prevent clergy sexual abuse in our communities and to accompany victim-survivors on the path toward healing. Later this month, I will meet with priests to hear in-person their thoughts and advice. This input, along with words shared by the faithful, will help shape further adjustments and additions to our diocese’s policies on confronting the crime and sin of sexual abuse. I will share those updates with you in the future. "The USCCB statement begins with a powerful quote used at the ordination of every bishop: ‘Keep watch over the whole flock in which the Holy Spirit has appointed you to shepherd the Church of God.’ It is with great shame and sorrow that I meditate on the fact that too many leaders of our Church abandoned that vow when they failed to ‘keep watch’ over the most vulnerable in their flocks. I join my brother deacons, priests and bishops in prayer and penance over these evil acts, and I embrace the call for concrete actions. Please pray for me during this time, and be assured of my prayers for you. The Most Reverend Allen H. Vigneron Archbishop of Detroit September 20, 2018

MERCY IN ACTION DAY
October 20, 2018 has been set aside for the third annual Mercy in Action Day. It is the annual day of service for our archdiocese, established in 2016, the Year of Mercy, as named by Pope Francis. This year we will be supporting Vista Maria in Dearborn Heights. They provide care, treatment, transitional living, education and many other services for today’s vulnerable youth and young adults. We will be doing grounds work on their campus from 10am-2pm. We will also be collecting items from their “wish list” of donations and delivering to them that day. (See list on right) And last, we will be doing some on-site prep work for an organization called SOAP that helps victims of human trafficking. •
• •
We need 30 high school students to volunteer for the grounds work. (Christian Service hours apply – spots are filling up quickly!) See the wish list for donation items - start collecting! Contribute money towards the SOAP project; $270 needed.

Three Angels
The Sacred Heart-Divine Child SVdP expresses their deep-felt gratitude to the Three Angels who provided significant offerings during Labor Day week so we could continue to address the needs of the poor. It couldn’t have come at a better time since our bank balance tumbled greatly over summer, and we barely had enough to cover our commitment to the Food Pantry, Journey to Housing SVdP, and Solidarity SVdP, as well as two local agencies who assist us on a monthly basis. Quite frankly, after paying the monthly bills, we had very little left. In our prayers, we say “thanks” and “please bless these angels, as well as all of you angels who remember our cause.” God bless and peace be with you. ~Mindy Delano

FIVE FOLEY MEMBERS (and Zaid) BECOME SIR KNIGHTS! Two weeks ago, five Bishop Foley Knights spent their Saturday morning and afternoon at an exemplification of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. It is truly an honor and a privilege to be a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. It has its own separate ceremony and is only offered two times a year in southeast Michigan. It is a formal dress event that differentiates its significance.
Page 13 Page 13

The 4th Degree finalizes the Order’s degree certification with the pledge of PATRIOTISM. The other pledges of CHARITY, UNITY and FRATERNITY are all bestowed in the first, second and third degrees. The exemplification is a beautiful ceremony where the new Sir Knight leaves with a sense of pride to be an American Catholic Man. That’s right; a Knight of the 4th Degree is given the title Sir Knight! There were fifty-nine men from southeast Michigan who were exemplified as Sir Knights in the Bishop Robert Fisher class of September 2018. Monsignor Schulte Assembly (the local 4th Degree Chapter in Dearborn) welcomed a total of six men to their ranks. Foley Knights Jim Bell, Ronald Broekman, Stephen Lentz, Erik Norwood, Rich Norwood and St. Fabian Council’s Zaid Chabaan (DCs own summer seminarian). The color guard present at recent Divine Child events comes from the Monsignor Schulte Assembly. Remember, you have to be a member of the 4th Degree to be a color guard, but you don’t have to be a color guard to be a member of the 4th Degree. The Assembly holds its meeting on the second Thursday of the month at O’Kelley Council. Like all assemblies, Monsignor Schulte Assembly is made up of Knights from many different councils, as there are fewer assemblies than there are councils. On another great note, our parish pastor and council chaplain Fr. Jim (HAPPY BIRTHDAY) decided to continue his advancement as a Knight and go through the 2nd and 3rd degree. There was a major degree offered for first degree members one evening last week. As a first degree member, Fr. Jim had wanted to go through the Major Degree, but Sunday morning degrees were not conducive to his schedule. Due to the solemnity of the Second and Third Degrees, they are only administered by degree teams sanctioned by the Supreme Council. This is why when a Major Degree is announced locally, we make a push to get men to join the Order.

So congratulations to the six men who were exemplified as Sir Knights…and to Fr. Jim for becoming a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus. Although he does not yet carry the title of Sir Knight, he will always be our very own Fr. Jim!! Next weekend is our bi-annual Tootsie Roll Drive to help support the Intellectually and Developmentally disabled throughout the state of Michigan. Please greet the Foley Knights after Mass and be as generous as you can for this worthy cause.
