Things Above from Fr. Bilot Fr. Matt and the Education Commission are working diligently to bring a wonderful opportunity to our parish. The evening, "Sharing our Lives," is an ecumenical event which we are hosting in the High School auditorium on Monday, September 24 at 7 p.m. We will welcome three Imams from the Muslim community and three people who work in ecumenism in the Archdiocese of Detroit. The goal of this gathering is to inspire mutual understanding and shared life here in our neighborhood. Please see the informational flyer in this bulletin on page 6, or go to the website to learn more about the content of the evening and its goal.   Because Because the the HS HS auditorium auditorium has has limited seating, we are asking you are you to to please please register register for for “Sharing “Sharing Our Our Lives” so that that we we may may have havean anidea idea Lives” at goo.gl/vyFTdk goo.gl/vyFTdk so of many people people will will be be inin attendance. attendance. of how many Registration is posted posted on on the theflyer flyeras aswell. well. Registration information is II hope hope you will attend this important event! Also in this bulletin, on page 5, there is a letter from the Review Board for the Archdiocese of Detroit. This board deals with issues of abuse that are reported here in the Archdiocese. Judge Michael Talbot (who happens to be an alumnus of Divine Child) heads up the Board and wrote the letter. I ask that you please read his letter and pass it along so that we may all be informed as to how the Archdiocese deals with reports of abuse. Again, I am sorry for what has happened and how it has devasted people’s lives. W e need to pray for healing of those abused, for their families, for those who committed the abuse, and for those who didn't report the incidents. I believe Jesus Christ can, and will, bring us through this very difficult and painful time in the Church. As I mentioned previously, our faith is grounded in Jesus Christ and the Sacraments and not in the people who have used their power and position to take advantage of the vulnerable. Please pray with me for a renewal in the Catholic Church. I would like to update you on the athletics field house that we are in the process of building. As I mentioned before, we submitted building plans to the State asking for a permit to construct. It took the State of Michigan until mid-July to grant the permit (a new process was being implemented in the State). Unfortunately, because of this delay, we lost a lot of construction time. W e are moving forward now, but it will take time. I know this delay has caused some congestion in the morning school drop-off for students, and it has been inconvenient for our student athletes to access the athletic field. Despite these challenges,

Page 33 Page

it will be worth the wait in the end, and I ask for your continued patience. Also, since we will not be constructing a building on the north side of the bleachers, we are paving this area and adding beautiful planters which you can sit on, creating some welcomed green space with the planting of trees. Have a blessed week, Fr. Jim

The transition of someone becoming Catholic can be a long and difficult process. If someone is coming from a position of no faith, they will have many intellectual questions about who God is, and how we know he exists. If someone is coming from another Christian denomination, they will have many more specific questions about the differences between their previous denomination and the Catholic faith. For anyone, the journey is not easy. However, before any of these hurdles that people must cross, the first hurdle that they must cross is having the courage to cross the entryway of the church. When they do that, what is their experience? If we are to be a church of missionary disciples, it is our responsibility to ensure that that first experience is one of being welcomed. Archbishop Vigneron, in Unleash the Gospel, encourages us to imitate the father from the Parable of the Prodigal Son when we meet new people in church. While we, as a parish staff, have a responsibility to be welcoming and to organize volunteers and ushers to be welcoming and hospitable, the responsibility falls to all of us. How can we better imitate the father of the prodigal son when someone new comes to church? The changes that need to happen are simple, but they can have profound consequences. Something as simple as moving to the center of a pew when someone is looking for a seat can show a visitor that we want them to be here. The Archbishop urges us, “Let us make our parishes places where everyone who attends Mass can also make friends, find mentors, and feel known, loved and supported.” The desire to be a welcoming parish will be in special focus this year as we prepare for Christmas. The Archdiocese of Detroit, as part of Unleash the Gospel, will be asking all parishes to work to develop a “Mission Oriented Christmas” where the visitors who come to Mass only on Christmas can be engaged and brought into an encounter with the Lord. It will be the work of the entire parish to welcome these visitors. More information on this initiative will be forthcoming in the coming months.

September 2018 September 7, 7, 2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Recent reporting on the scourge of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church provides a timely catalyst to review the practices and policies in the Archdiocese of Detroit. Questions and answers, such as: What happens here? How are complaints of the sexual abuse of minors by clergy processed in the Detroit archdiocese? And by whom? As chairman of the Archdiocesan Review Board, which considers all such complaints and then advises Archbishop of Detroit Allen Vigneron, I would like to share with you how we have handled cases here for many years. I also will describe our outreach efforts to the victims of clergy sexual abuse and our extensive and ongoing efforts to promote safe environments. Prior to the June 2002 meeting of the U.S. Bishops in Dallas, when the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People was adopted, the Detroit archdiocese reconstituted its review board. (An earlier version of the review board was established in 1988, when the archdiocese became one of the first dioceses to implement a policy on the sexual abuse of minors by clergy.) I accepted the role of chairman of the independent board formed in 2002, and continue in that same role today. My current fellow members include a retired prosecutor, a psychologist, a health care executive, a former superintendent of Catholic schools and an archdiocesan pastor. In the spring of 2002, the archdiocese also signed voluntary agreements with the prosecutors from all six counties within its boundaries to share case files of priests accused of sexual misconduct in previous years. In some cases, those files involved complaints of abuse that occurred in the 1940s and 1950s. Four criminal prosecutions resulted from the archdiocese sharing its files. Importantly, this agreement with prosecutors continues to this day. Since 2002, every complaint that comes in, regardless of its source or the date of the alleged activity, is reported to civil authorities. No complaints are held back, pre-screened or disregarded. The archdiocese fully cooperates with law enforcement. Similarly, complaints Similarly, complaints are are considered considered by by the the Review Review Board. Board. The archdiocese has publicly posted the names of restricted and/or removed priests and deacons for more than 15 years. Current practice also includes notifying the parishes in which the clergy in question served, as well as local media. Complaints come to the Detroit archdiocese by verbal report via the 24/7 toll-free victim assistance line, 866-343-8055, or in writing to vac@aod.org. There are no deadlines or time limits on those who wish to make a complaint; it does not matter if the abuse occurred five, 15 or more than 50 years ago. Every effort is made by the Victim Assistance Coordinator – a credentialed social worker – to assist with healing and counseling for those who have been abused. If requested and helpful, the archbishop or his priest-delegate will meet with the victim. We recognize that the best approach to addressing abuse is to prevent it from occurring in the first place. Since 2002, the archdiocese has implemented a number of safe environment programs, all designed to identify situations that could leave a child vulnerable to the methods of sexual offenders and to emphasize the critical steps that must be taken to prevent and report the sexual abuse of children and vulnerable adults. The program for adults, called Protecting God’s Children, is mandatory for all clergy, church representatives, employees and volunteers – all those who work with children and vulnerable adults. There are also similar, age-appropriate, personal safety programs for grade school, middle school, high school and religious education students. They go by such names as Circle of Grace, Called to Serve, Called to Protect and Think First and Stay Safe. Since 2002, more than 101,000 adults have been trained through these programs. In addition, each year we provide training for the 29,000 students in our Catholic K-12 schools and the 39,000 in Religious Education. The archdiocese also regularly educates church and school personnel about mandatory reporting. In Michigan, professionals required to report their suspicions of child abuse or neglect to state authorities include clergy, school teachers, counselors and social workers. Our highest priority is those who have suffered from clergy abuse. We recognize the deep trauma from their experiences, and we understand it may take a long time before an individual is ready to come forward. No matter how long it has been, we are here to listen and try to be of assistance. Each meeting of the Review Board begins with a prayer first used in 2011 by the Archbishop of Dublin. I would like to conclude by sharing that prayer with you: Lord, Lord, We are are so so sorry sorry We for for what what some some of of us us did did to to your your children: children: treated them so cruelly, treated especially in their hour of need. We have left them with with aa lifelong lifelong suffering. This was not your plan for them or us. Please help help us us to to help help them. them. Please Guide us, us, Lord. Lord. Guide Amen. Amen. Respectfully, Respectfully, The The Honorable Honorable Michael Michael J.J. Talbot Talbot Chair, Chair,Archdiocesan ArchdiocesanReview ReviewBoard Board

CHURCH OF THE DIVINE CHILD

MERCY IN ACTION DAY

October 20, 2018 has been set aside for the third annual Mercy in Action Day. It is the annual day of service for our archdiocese, established in 2016, the Year of Mercy, as named by Pope Francis. This year we will be supporting Vista Maria in Dearborn Heights. They provide care, treatment, transitional living, education and many other services for today’s vulnerable youth and young adults. We will be doing grounds work on their campus from 10am2pm. We will also be collecting items from their “wish list” of donations and delivering to them that day. (See list on right) And last, we will be doing some on-site prep work for an organization called SOAP that helps victims of human trafficking. •

• •

We need 30 high school students to volunteer for the grounds work. (Christian Service hours apply – spots are filling up quickly!) See the wish list for donation items- start collecting! Contribute money towards the SOAP project; $270 needed.

More information will follow regarding the collection of wish list items or monetary contributions. Contact co-chairs Amy McMichael or Debbie May for more information or to volunteer. Amy McMichael: 313-333-8641 amcmichael2015@gmail.com Debbie May: 313-268-9537 ddmaypop@aol.com

RAH! RAH! RAH!

“Falcon for Life” Rally Towels are HERE! …get ‘em while they’re HOT!

Left: Foley Knight Erik Norwood sports a rally towel on his tuba. Below: Young Falcons getting into the spirit with their rally towels.

Hot off the presses, Foley Council is selling RED RALLY TOWELS. The black print on the red towels reads, “I am a… for Life!” Foley Knights will have a table with the towels at home varsity football games. The towels go for $5- each. It is a great way to help support the Knights fund all the different programs we do throughout the parish and community. Twirling the rally towels in the air is a great way to rally our Falcons to victory. The double-meaning is a play on words for the Knights’ pro-life stance, as well as a correlative to “Once a Falcon always a Falcon!” No matter how you choose to read it, pick up a rally towel, cheer for the team and support the Knights. Stop by the table and get to know your Foley Knights – stop and talk and share a laugh or two. You just may be surprised who you see hanging out there!

Below: Foley Knights John Orischak, Steve Lentz & Pompeo Galasso demonstrate the proper twirl!

If you are still on the fence about joining the Knights, next Sunday is our Major Degree. If you would like to become a Knight of Columbus, please call our Membership Director Steve Lentz at 313-949-5162. He will help you prepare for the September 23rd degree.
