Things Above from Fr. Bilot HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY! Today, we celebrate Mother's Day in the United States and in many countries throughout the world. The holiday is an opportunity for us to thank the women who gave us life and reflect on the unique role that mothers are called to play in the lives of their children and in the world. The holiday especially points us, as believers, to our Blessed Mother, Mary, who is a great role-model for all mothers to emulate. She was the first, obedient and trusting in the Lord and His Will in her life. She was docile to the Holy Spirit, allowing the love of God to work in her life so she could raise Jesus to be the man he was destined to be. Remember, Jesus Christ didn’t just appear as an adult or fall from the sky. He was born of a human woman and mother. She was humble and patient, not looking at worldly views and opinions, but listening intently to the voice of God so that she could teach her Son, Jesus, about Him and the Commandments. In response to her great love, Jesus honored Mary as his mother and showed her the love of a devoted Son. Blessings to all of our mothers on your special day! I thought this would be a good time to give you some updates on what is going on around the Divine Child campus. First, people are puzzled by all the flag/markers in the ground all over the complex. We hired a company to survey the property to show us where the water/sewer lines are located, where there are gas lines, electrical lines and sprinkler lines. Because all the parking lots need to be updated (we are doing the church lot this summer), we need to make sure we know where all these lines are located. We knew about most of the lines, but there were some surprises! Eventually, all the flags will be removed. This summer, we will also begin to re-do the property sprinkler lines. Many of the sprinkler lines were installed in the 1980's, and now they are brittle, cracking/leaking, or lack the ability to hold water pressure. In order to cut down on longterm costs, we are starting to update the sprinkler system, beginning with the church grounds this summer. In subsequent years, sprinkler work on the other areas of the complex will ensue. This past weekend, we blessed the new field house located behind the high school. This building includes the high school football locker rooms, coaches/trainer room, a big community space for practices and parish meetings/events, and lots of storage for all the athletic and parish equipment. It is a beautiful building and truly fits the integrity of the complex. I am very pleased with how it turned out. Also, now that the weather is warming up, go for a walk by the field house at night. On both sides of the peak of the field house is a stained glass emblem of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. It depicts the scene from our main stained glass window of the church. At night, it will be back-lit so it looks beautiful. It is a reminder of why our parish and all its endeavors exist. We are all here to give glory to the Lord!

And...the fish pond. We found a dead fish one day, and we believe that someone threw something in the pond and accidently hit a fish. Another fish was eaten by a bird. And finally, we do not know what happened to "Bubba,” the large black koi. He has been in the pond for over 12 years. We are asking everyone -- please do not put fish in the pond or feed the fish. Someone is putting other types of fish in the pond, and they are invasive to the koi and causing the destruction and death of the fish. Thanks for your cooperation. Enjoy the beauty of Spring! Fr. Jim Bilot

Prayer for Vocations O Mary, who raised your Divine Son with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, intercede for all young people, especially those clouded by doubt about their vocations. May the light of grace pierce their hearts so they may answer your Son’s call, especially those whom He is inviting to the priesthood and consecrated life. Vianney Vocations

Abandonment and Surrender In these days of Easter joy, now is a privileged time of grace to bask in the light and glory of the Resurrection of Christ from the dead. Jesus invites us to rewire our hearts in light of the victory that He has won for us. A perfect way to share in His victory is to cultivate a sense of surrender and abandonment to His providence. One of the most beautiful prayers of abandonment comes from Blessed Charles de Foucauld, who lived in Algeria as a minister of charity and the Gospel to his neighbors. Please pray this prayer and make it your own during this season of Easter. Prayer of Abandonment Father, I abandon myself into your hands; do with me what you will. Whatever you may do, I thank you: I am ready for all, I accept all. Let only your will be done in me, and in all your creatures I wish no more than this, O Lord. Into your hands I commend my soul: I offer it to you with all the love of my heart, for I love you, Lord, and so need to give myself, to surrender myself into your hands without reserve, and with boundless confidence, for you are my Father.

What’s in the ‘Z’ Dear Divine Child Family, I am so excited and grateful to return here this summer to serve! I am especially gratefully to Fr. Bilot and Fr. Hood for their priesthood and support. In a particular way, I am especially blessed to be under Fr. Bilot’s leadership as he comes to the end of his service to the Divine Child community. He has made an impact on me and, I know, everyone in this parish community. It will be a summer of many transitions! I completed my Third year of studies and have one more year left in seminary until graduation and ordination to the priesthood. My mom was baptized and raised Armenian Catholic in Baghdad, and I was baptized into the Armenian Church as an infant. Since it is my desire to be become a priest for the Archdiocese of Detroit, I have to officially become Roman Catholic, thus causing a technical delay in my ordination to the diaconate. When I do get ordained to the Diaconate (hopefully, over the summer or fall, if all goes through), I will serve here on the weekends during the school year when I return to seminary. Regardless of my stage of formation, I come here to learn, to grow, and to serve. I am your brother, and together, we are part of God’s family. I am thankful for the impact this parish has made in my life and for the many graces God wishes to bestow on us this summer. As Blessed Solanus Casey reminded us, let us thank God ahead of time, for all of His blessings. As we continue to journey during this Easter season to Pentecost, I leave you with some words from my one of my favorite spiritual writers. "The disciples who followed Him were poor wretches like you and me. All the newness of hope, the absolutely new certainty and new reality that they were, was that Presence…This is the divine in history! I remain the same poor beggar, but with Christ I am certain, I am rich. The attractiveness of my person that is, what makes it possible to love my person, is the existence of this Presence. Indeed, it is only in a companionship with Him that a person loves himself. Only a person who carries this message can claim an affection for himself, can love himself and therefore love others." - Msgr. Luigi Guissani Zaid Chabaan Seminarian Intern

They stayed at Ave Maria University and visited the Mother Teresa Museum. On behalf of the Divine Child High School Varsity Club, we would like to thank all of you who supported us either by donations or by prayers to make this pledge faith in action trip a reality. The students were able to experience one of the most powerful Holy Weeks of service and prayer. We would like to extend a special thank-you to Eric Haley and Fr. FOLEY HOSTS DISTRICT 5 CLERGY NIGHT …and a good time was had by all!

Monsignor Schulte Flag Retirement Ceremony

Everyone young and old alike are invited to attend a sanctioned flag retirement ceremony on Monday, May 13th at O’Kelley Hall parking lot (the end of Park Street west of Outer Drive) at 6:30pm. There will be a short discussion on respect for the flag and proper protocols for our flag, before properly burning the old flags. Please arrive early. ***Old American Flags can be deposited in the box near the St. Michael statue in the Gathering Space this weekend.***

On Monday April 29th, Bishop Foley Council hosted its District-Wide Clergy Appreciation Dinner. The four councils of District Five (Bishop Foley, Msgr. Champion, Robert Jones & Fr. Saylor) sponsored the dinner held again this year at Park Place Banquet Center. About one hundred and fortyfive people attended to honor the twenty-two priests, deacons and religious from around the area who were in attendance at this annual event. After dinner, the program began with a talk from our KofC Archdiocesan Chaplain Father Paul Ballien. Father spoke about “our call to serve” and used the example of St. Catherine of Siena, whose feast day it was, to demonstrate how we can be the men and women God is calling us to be. His talk was brief but inspiring, leaving everyone with hope that what we are doing helps to build up God’s Church. This special evening was attended by four of the five state officers and three of their wives: State Deputy Bill Chasse and his wife Mary Beth, State Secretary Walter Winkle and his wife Karen, State Advocate Barry Borsenik and his wife Mandy and State Warden Charlie McCuen. The State Treasurer Chris Kolomjec was sad that he was not able to attend as he had business of the state to contend with.

Bottom: Foley Chaplain Fr. Jim Bilot with Brother Foley Knights Fr. Matt Hood, Rich & Sue Norwood, Dave & Dianne Rich and Steve & Peggy Lentz

After the Foley Council honorees were acknowledged, a special award of appreciation was given to District 5 Deputy Jim Pease on behalf of all the Knights of the four councils. The four Grand Knights from the District 5 Councils bestowed a Plaque of Appreciation with a small statue of Our Lady Untier of Knots to Jim as he steps down from his duties as District Deputy due to health.

Below: District 5 Deputy Jim Pease (center) surrounded by his Grand Knights from District 5 (from left) Robert Jones GK Chuck Morrison, Msgr. Champion GK Vernell Smith, Father Saylor GK Len Vokal, Bishop Foley GK Dominic Raona and State Deputy Bill Chasse

The evening ended with a short speech from Michigan KofC State Deputy, Bill Chasse. He spoke about the Knights' appreciation for our Clergy and how refreshing it was to see so many Clergy and Religious in attendance who were being honored at our dinner that evening. He thanked them all for answering the call, for their devotion to our Lord, to the Church and to the Knights of Columbus. He ended with words of encouragement for all the Knights and our families as we continue to be defenders of our faith, by supporting or priests, defending life and helping to build up our families. The program ended by 9:15 and guests stayed to socialize a bit longer. A HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY FROM ALL THE FOLEY KNIGHTS TO ALL OUR BEAUTIFUL MOTHERS! If you are a Catholic man over 17½ years old, you are invited to join Foley Council. Maybe you are an inactive Knight who sees the great things we are doing and would like to become part of the order again. Please call our Membership Director Steve Lentz 313-949-5132, or talk to any Foley Knight. There will be future degrees coming up soon.

A Prayer for the Mentally Ill LOVING GOD, YOU ARE ALWAYS NEAR TO US, ESPECIALLY WHEN WE ARE WEAK, SUFFERING AND VULNERABLE. Reach out to those who experience mental illness. Lift their burdens, calm their anxiety, and quiet their fears. Surround them with your healing presence that they may know that they are not alone. We ask this through the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes and in the name of your Son, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. AMEN. www.chausa.org

Irving C. “Francis” Houle Cause for Canonization. Many of you will remember the man with the wounds of Christ in his hands when he visited Divine Child for healing services in the late 1990s. Msgr. Kucyk extended the invitation and the parish was blessed when he accepted twice. He placed his hands on thousands of people and prayed over each one individually because Jesus told him to. Some were physically healed and some spiritually healed. Francis died on January 3, 2009 and on November 7, 2018, his Cause for Canonization opened in the Diocese of Marquette, Michigan. The Irving C. “Francis” Houle Association has been recently formed to help promote his cause for canonization, and to assist in raising funds for expenses for the work of Dr. Ambrosi and others. If you would like to become an annual member, please request membership information from: Irving C. “Francis” Houle, 709 1st Ave. South, Escanaba, Michigan 49829. 906-789-6244 or email Kathy Crombie (DC parish member) dignityoflife@yahoo.com.
