Things Above from Fr. Bilot We are now in the home stretch of Lent. Today, we celebrate the 5th Sunday of Lent, and we now embark on the last week and a half until we enter into the Triduum of Holy Week. The Triduum is comprised of our gathering for the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Thursday evening, with Adoration at the Altar of Repose until 11:45, followed by Night Prayer. On Good Friday, we celebrate with Stations of the Cross at noon, followed by the singing of the Lamentations, and concluding with the most important aspect, The Passion of the Lord. During Christ’s Passion, we listen to the sad and somber reality of Jesus condemned, crucified and dying on the Cross. Then, we pray the Solemn Intercessions, followed by Veneration of the Cross, and reception of the Holy Eucharist. Of all the aspects of Good Friday, the Passion of the Lord, which begins at 1:30 PM, is most important. After the Service, we wait in silence, stillness and sadness, as we commemorate Our Lord lying in the grave. Only when we celebrate the Easter Vigil do we stop our Lenten fast and rejoice in the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. I am writing about this now because we tend to regard Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday as "days off" or a time for preparation for a family gathering. The days off and the family gatherings only make sense and are celebrated properly if we have entered into these sacred liturgies during Holy Week. Please make a concerted effort to make the holy days truly holy by your presence and your desire to grow closer to the Lord. I, too, enjoy the treats of Easter - the chocolate bunnies, the jelly beans, the marshmallow eggs. I get excited to see people dressed nicely and smartly for the Easter Mass because it speaks of an importance - a reverence for Jesus risen from the dead! However, if we have not spiritually prepared ourselves by entering into the mystery of Christ's Passion, then Easter will be flat. It may be exciting and fun, but it will lack true joy, which is born of love given to us by the Risen Lord. Take some time to reflect on what you really want to do during Holy Week, and then ask the Lord what He needs you to do. I know what we need you to do -- come and celebrate this sacred time as a parish community! When you enter Church next weekend, it will be Palm Sunday. Take a palm and a missalette so you can enter into the holiest week of the year. Palm Sunday and Good Friday are the only two times when you can participate in the recitation of the Passion. It is powerful and deep. Participation makes all the difference. In prayer, Fr. Jim Bilot

To the Divine Child Community, I can’t thank you all enough for your incredible hospitality, generosity, and friendship over the past several months. Though my time here has been brief, it has been a very blessed time since I arrived in August. A special thank you and word of gratitude to Fr. Jim for giving me this opportunity, and to Fr. Matt and Fr. Tom for their support and encouragement as well. In my countless interactions with the priests, staff, teachers, coaches, and so many parishioners of Divine Child, I’ve encountered a generous and welcoming community that is dedicated to the work of Christ and His Church. I’m truly grateful to have experienced firsthand that love and witness to Christ. Keep striving to bring Christ to all that enter through the doors of Divine Child! Following Easter, I will graduate from Sacred Heart Major Seminary in late April and return to Minnesota. On June 28 of this year, I will be ordained a Priest of Jesus Christ in Winona, MN on the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Please pray for me as the date approaches, and know that I will keep you all in prayer as you prepare to welcome Fr. Bob McCabe in early July. Thank you once again for the blessing that you have been in my life throughout this year, and may God bless you all. -Deacon Matt Wagner

Searching for and Maintaining Peace One my favorite spiritual authors is Fr. Jacques Philippe, who is known for his short yet profound writings which encapsulate time treasured spiritual truth in ways that are accessible and tremendously helpful. The spiritual principle of his book Searching for and Maintaining Peace is that God is the one who gives peace to our souls and God desires for our souls always to be at peace. This principle is one that has been profoundly helpful in my life and can be helpful for all of us to recognize during this season of Lent. Here are some quotes from his book that I encourage you to read over and bring to prayer to let God’s peace become more deeply rooted in your hearts during this season of conversion and greater trust in God’s providence. “The more our soul is peaceful and tranquil, the more God is reflected in it, the more His image expresses itself in us, the more His grace acts through us.” “Often, we cause ourselves to become agitated and disturbed by trying to resolve everything by ourselves, when it would be more efficacious to remain peacefully before the gaze of God and to allow Him to act and work in us with His wisdom and power, which are infinitely superior to ours.” “’Acquire interior peace and a multitude will find its salvation through you,’ said Saint Seraphim of Sarov.” “Acquiring and maintaining interior peace, which is impossible without prayer, should consequently be considered a priority for everybody, above all for those who claim to want to do good for their neighbor. Otherwise, more often than not they would simply be communicating their own restlessness and distress.” “Dom Lorenzo Scupoli, one of the great spiritual masters of the 16th century, … said “The devil does his utmost to banish peace from one’s heart, because he knows that God abides in peace and it is in peace that He accomplishes great things.’” “The first goal of spiritual combat, that toward which our efforts must above all else be directed, is not to always obtain a victory (over our temptations, our weaknesses, etc.), rather it is to learn to maintain peace of heart under all circumstances, even in the case of defeat.” “All the reasons that cause us to lose our sense of peace are bad reasons.”

“It is not the exterior circumstances that must change; it is above all our hearts that must change.” “Saint John of the Cross says that ‘it is very often the case that just when the soul believes itself lost that it gains and profits most.’” “God acts in the peace of one’s soul. It is not by our own efforts that we succeed in liberating ourselves from sin; it is only the grace of God which attains this end. Rather than troubling ourselves, it is more efficacious to regain our peace and let God act.”

“Our confidence in God must go at least (so) far: to believe that He is good enough and powerful enough to draw good from everything, including our faults and our infidelities.” “The sign of spiritual progress is not so much never falling as it is being able to lift oneself up quickly after one falls.” “There is an important illusion that must be exposed: we would like to present ourselves before the Lord only when we are presentable, well-groomed and content with ourselves! But there is a lot of presumptuousness in that attitude! In effect, we would like to bypass the need for mercy.” “We will be saints the day when our inabilities and our nothingness will no longer be for us a subject of sadness and anxiety, but a subject of peace and joy.” May the peace of the Lord abide in your hearts this Lent! Fr. Matthew Hood

12th Annual Chili Cha Cha: Another Success! The recent 12th Annual Chili Cha Cha was wildly successful, making $29,714.00. Donations were continual, even after the event, especially with the recent “Dress Down Day” at the Sacred Heart Elementary School. After payment to terrific Chef Alison Costello of the Capuchins, for the cost of the food supplies, the 50/50 split with the Capuchin Soup Kitchen was $14,607.00. This year’s profit increased by $8,000 over last year’s! All of our SVdP Conference is over the moon with high fives and a huge shoutout of “thank you” going to the Silver Spoon Sponsors, the Good Samaritans, guests, the Swing City Big Band, volunteers, Chef Alison, and Chair Fran Helner and the Chili Cha Cha Committee. “Love the big band music,” “it’s awesome,” “great background music,” and “it’s been so great and the food was delicious,” were said over and over again by guests. Silent Auction, Mystery Bags of Wine, and the Vintage glassware from the Fair Lane Estate were popular items snagged up. The chili, for take-out, was so popular that the containers were completely sold out! The gift of delicious, different wines from Joe and Nicole Charnley, through “Carmella” was enjoyed by everyone. Dearborn Brewery assisted a contributor in the sale of craft beers. Art Hughes, of Dearborn Farm Market, donated a lovely array of fruits, cheeses, and crackers at the appetizer table. And the 50/50 raffle was won by Dr. Jim Sunstrum who, in turn, donated his 50% back to the cause! On Friday, March 8th, the presentation of the checks by Chair Fran Helner, took place at the Sacred Heart Church office. Representing the Capuchin Soup Kitchen was Brother Jerry Johnson, and President of the Sacred Heart/Divine Child SVdP, Pamela Szpytman. “I just can’t believe how far we have come with Chili Cha Cha! I’m so grateful for everyone making this so successful.” said Szpytman. ~Mindy Delano

On March 16, kids from our junior high school and religious education programs joined with other parishes to participate in Kids Against Hunger. They measured and packaged ingredients for 14,000 meals that will go to people struggling with natural disasters or hunger! They also put together over 1,800 packets of condiments for Crossroads of Michigan, which provides meals to those in the local community who are hungry.

Congratulations to the Divine Child Elementary and Junior High cheerleaders and coaching staff! The teams competed at the CYO Winter Final Competition on Friday, March 8 at 7:00 PM at St. Catherine of Siena.

Foley’s Forum Bishop Foley Council 2660 serving Dearborn since 1927

A HISTORY OF THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS and FOLEY COUNCIL Last week, on March 29th the Knights of Columbus celebrated Founder’s Day. It was on that date in 1882 that our founder Father Michael J. McGivney, curate at St. Mary’s parish in New Haven, Conn., and a small group of Catholic laymen started the Order. The organization received its charter from the state of Connecticut on March 29, 1882. In forming the organization, Father McGivney hoped to help Catholic men remain steadfast in their faith through mutual encouragement while establishing an elementary system of insurance so that the widows and children of members in the group who might die would not find themselves in dire financial straits. The Knights of Columbus is the largest Catholic lay organization in the world with nearly 2 million members throughout the world. Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to any man, over the age of 18, who is a practical Catholic in union with the Holy See. Forty-five years later in 1927, parishioners of St. Alphonsus and the ushers of the church realized the need for a local Knights of Columbus Council. Under the direction of Father John Klich, they began to organize and commence the procedures for chartering a council. After a successful membership drive, on November 27, 1927, Knights of Columbus State Deputy Frank O’Hara of Port Huron proclaimed the establishment of FORDSON COUNCIL 2660. In 1936, the name of the Council was changed to BISHOP FOLEY COUNCIL in honor of Bishop John S. Foley who served the Diocese of Detroit from 1881 to 1918. Meetings were originally held in the St. Alphonsus Auditorium. The location was moved to a rented furniture store on Maple, but in 1949, after an extensive fund raising campaign, the BISHOP FOLEY COUNCIL entered its own permanent clubhouse at 15800 Michigan Avenue. Starting in the late 1980’s, fraternal organizations began taking a hit on membership as family life was changing. There were less stay-at-home moms, so men were called to take on more responsibilities at home and organized sports of all-kinds became the new family activity. As the membership fell and the aging building became the focus of all Council activity, it was decided the best form of action was to sell the building. In 2000, the Council got out of the hall rental and lounge business and became a parish based council of St. Clement Parish in east Dearborn. Without the expenses of maintaining a building, BISHOP FOLEY COUNCIL was able to concentrate on the mission of the Knights of Columbus. The Council continued to shrink in membership as the demographics of the area changed. When the Archdiocese decided to close St. Clement Parish in 2016, the Council was forced to find another home. The Council rented facilities at Our Savior PNCC in Dearborn Heights until a permanent arrangement could be made. In early 2017, BISHOP FOLEY leaders began working with Church of the Divine Child Pastor Father Jim Bilot to facilitate a small office and meeting space for our members. It was announced in April of 2017 that BISHOP FOLEY COUNCIL would again become a parish-based council of the Knights of Columbus, based out of Divine Child Parish. Since finding a home at Divine Child, the Council continues to grow in membership and programs. The refocusing of the Council as well as the Order as a whole, has afforded the Council to align more closely with the mission of the Knights of Columbus and the needs of our parish. As the Council nears its one-hundred years of existence, its membership is growing and its reputation remains strong as a valued organization within the Dearborn Community. If you have been thinking about joining Foley Council, call Steve Lentz our Foley Membership Director at 313-949-5162. We are hoping to have another Major Degree in late Spring. Remember you must be at least a 1 st Degree member to attend meetings.
