Things Above from Fr. Bilot This past Monday, March 25, the parish experienced something very beautiful and grace-filled. Monday was the Solemnity of the Annunciation, where the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and asked her to be the Mother of our Savior. As we all know, Mary said yes and, thus, the course of Salvation history was altered forever. This extraordinary day was made even more exceptional with an event that has never been done before in the history of Divine Child parish. We had an all-campus liturgy. In other words, both elementary school and high school students, faculty and staff were in church for Mass. The church was packed -- filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit -- as over 1,500 of us worshiped our Lord Jesus Christ. The event was a powerful witness to our Catholic faith and to Catholic education. What made the experience even more unique was how the students were seated in church -- one row was grade school students, the next row was high school students. This configuration was continued throughout the entire church, so the students could support each other and pray with someone younger or older than themselves. It was also an opportunity for our students to witness to one another in a spirit of unity. We were truly blessed to have this holy experience here at Divine Child! This weekend is Laetare Sunday. It is a celebration within the Church announcing a hopeful message that we are midway through the penitential time of Lent. It also reminds us to persevere, for the Holy Spirit is continually guiding us to Good Friday, where we can let our old self die in order to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. To heighten the experience, the church switches the liturgical color to rose. The color rose takes us out of the depths of the penitential nature of purple and moves us to a color that brings us into the light. Once the weekend is over, we revert back to purple as we intensify our prayer, fasting and almsgiving in preparation for Easter. Next weekend, when you enter the church, you will notice that the statues and mosaics will be covered in purple. Covering the statues helps to heighten our senses of the stark reality of Jesus’ passion and death. It is always so refreshing and reassuring when the veiled images are once again visible! We hear and say many times how “time flies.” It certainly does when we are actively living our lives in the faith of Jesus Christ. There is so much to do and to proclaim! Next weekend, April 6 & 7, will be Deacon Matt Wagner's last weekend with us. As you recall, when he arrived here in late August, he gave us his biography in which we learned that he was from the great state of Minnesota and studying at Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit. Well, his time has come to an end, as he will be heading back to his home Diocese for the sacred time of Holy Week and then, the following week, he finishes his studies at the Seminary. His ordination will be June 28 at the Cathedral in Winona-Rochester, MN. After Mass this fghgfhfgh

weekend or next, please extend your prayers and best wishes to him as he moves forward in preparation for Holy Orders. Just a friendly reminder to help us live out the mission of almsgiving by contributing to the CSA 2019. I am grateful for your support and care for this important Archdiocesan endeavor. In prayer, Fr. Jim Bilot

The Joy of Salvation The first spiritual masters in the Church are known as the Desert Fathers. The Desert Fathers, who followed the example of the great St. Anthony of the Desert, were the men who left the comforts of home to seek God exclusively in a monastic setting in the desert in the first three centuries of the Church. The spiritual knowledge that was gained from these men still is a wellspring of life for the Church today. A consistent theme in the writings of the Desert Fathers is the battle to overcome sin, which overlaps with our current time of conversion during this season of Lent. While the Fathers said that most Christians would struggle with one of the seven deadly sins and would need to conquer those temptations before advancing in the spiritual life, the one sin that everyone needed to overcome was the sin of acedia. First, what is acedia? In the book The Noonday Devil: Acedia, the Unnamed Evil of Our Times, Dom Jean-Charles Nault gives us a definition: On the one hand, acedia is a sin against the joy that springs from charity; it is sadness about what ought to gladden us most: participation in the very life of God. On the other hand, acedia is a sin against charity when it crushes or paralyzes activity, because then it effects the deepest motive force of activity, namely, charity, the participation of the Holy Spirit. (p. 80) Often describes as “spiritual laziness,” acedia is a form of depression and heaviness that saps joy from the spiritual life. Acedia is less of a chosen behavior that we are aware of than it is a state of life in which we find ourselves. While it is called “laziness,” often people who are very busy struggle with acedia because they refuse to do the one thing necessary – to seek intimacy with God in prayer. In fact, a life that is so full that you feel that you have “no time for God” is a usually a clear sign that acedia is afoot. If you are currently in a state where you feel lukewarm and tired in your spiritual life, the Desert Fathers encourage us to fight these temptations. A prayer from the Psalms that counters these temptations is Psalm 51:12 which says, “Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.” The spirit of acedia convinces us to “close up shop” in our prayer life and habituate ourselves to a bland practice of the faith. The antidote to these temptations is God’s love. Allowing ourselves to receive His love and not listen to the lies that God is done with us is essential. If you find yourself falling victim to these sorts of temptations, let us join together in receiving the love God intends for us with joy. Fr. Matthew Hood

ALL ARE WELCOME TO JOIN US AT OUR NEXT

Christian Service Commission Meeting

Monday, April 1 at 7pm MPR in the Elementary School East Entrance With Special Guest Speakers from

Strangers No Longer

The Christian Service Commission will sponsor a presentation by "Strangers No Longer," a network of parish-based Circles of Support who respond to the biblical and papal exhortations to receive immigrants as our brothers and sisters. The name comes from “Strangers No Longer: Together on the Journey of Hope, A Pastoral Letter Concerning Migration from the Catholic Bishops of Mexico and the United States (2003).” Many local Catholics have formed Circles of Support in our parishes to respond with Education in the parish, Accompaniment of immigrants among us, and Advocacy for local and national policies and practices toward immigrants. Our guest speakers will be Cesar Cuellar and Carmen Luna of Gesu Parish who fled their home in El Salvador in 2017 and are applying for asylum in the US. They will describe their work in El Salvador and why they left to come here and apply for asylum. They will be joined by Gesu parishioner Bill O'Brien, who helps coordinate the Strangers No Longer parish network. For more information, please contact: Marisa Szpytman, 313-561-7566.

LIGHT REFRESHMENTS TO FOLLOW

LENTEN REFLECTION: Coming to Your Senses The Fourth Sunday of Lent Coming to his senses he thought, “How many of my father’s hired workers have more than enough food to eat, but here am I, dying from hunger. I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers.’” Lk. 15:17-19 Why do we cling to our sins? This passage comes from the story of the Prodigal Son. We should know that story well. The son decided to leave his father and take his future inheritance, spending it on a life of sin. When the money he had ran out, he was in desperate need. So what did he do? He came to his senses! Lord, my sins do leave me dry and empty inside. I see the misery and pain that result from the sinful choices I have made. Help me, dear Lord, to come to my senses and to turn from every sin I commit.

On Saturday, March 9, the catechumens (unbaptized), the candidates (baptized) and sponsors of the RCIA process celebrated the Rite of Election by Bishop Cepeda at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. The next stage of the RCIA journey is the Period of Purification and Enlightenment which began on the first Sunday of Lent. The rites that belong to this period are called Scrutinies. The scrutinies are solemnly celebrated on the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent and are reinforced by an exorcism. These rites take seriously the profound love of God and the desire of God to bring all people to full freedom and salvation. As one deepens in one’s awareness of the graciousness of the gift of God’s love, one is also sensitive to the barriers that keep this love from transforming and recreating life: barriers of sin and evil. The scrutinies rise up and expose whatever keeps the transforming love of God from liberating all forms of oppression. The scrutinies unmask the deception of evil and sin for what they really are: robbers of authentic and true life. The focus of the scrutinies is toward life, toward freedom, toward salvation. The scrutinies will be celebrated at the 10:00 Mass on March 31 and April 7. The rite reminds us that the scrutinies are for the community as well as the elect. The value of the scrutiny experience can be transformative for anyone who is spiritually prepared. One can experience God’s gifts of love and presence, and that presence uncovers and reveals attitudes that are contrary to right relationship with God – namely sin. The scrutinies also raise up attitudes and gifts that deepen our relationship with God. You are invited to share in this spiritual experience with the elect, candidates and sponsors of the RCIA process by participating in this rite. Continue to pray for these people whose RCIA journey is leading them to the Easter sacraments.

4th SUNDAY OF LENT …ARE WE THERE YET?? As we inch our way toward Easter, the idea of “new birth” has many meanings. Of course the obvious is the Resurrection of our Lord; there is also the cleansing Waters of Baptism and the springtime of new life that will begin to surround us. It is a truly a time for new beginnings and what better time than Lent to prepare for ourselves for this new birth! At every Major Degree, Knights of Columbus are reminded of the Precepts of the Church.  You shall attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation.  You shall confess your sins at least once a year.  You shall humbly receive your Creator in Holy Communion at least during the Easter season.  You shall keep holy the holy days of obligation.  You shall observe the prescribed days of fasting and abstinence. As we all know, we are called to attend weekly Mass and holy days of obligation. Most Catholics receive Communion regularly and we are all aware of the days of fast and abstinence as we run from parish to parish to support their Friday Fish Frys. But do we know, as Catholics we are called to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation at least once a year? Here at Divine Child, Confessions are heard every Saturday before and after the 4:30 Mass (and by appointment most any other time you need). There are usually three priests on Saturdays who avail themselves to hear Confessions and often times there is a bit of a wait. We may feel that we are not in a “state of sin” and we have no need of the Sacrament. The priest “persona Christi” is in the confessional in the person of Christ, to hear us tell God our Father that we are sorry for our sins and to ask His forgiveness. Our sins are always forgiven when we ask God to forgive us, allowing our sinful ways to be washed away and help us to start again brand new. It is almost like having a reset button! We need to feel the mercy of God and confession is good for the soul, really! As we make our way to Easter, why not take the opportunity in the last few weeks of Lent to celebrate the Sacrament. It is ok if you haven’t been in a while, a year, many years or a really long time! You don’t need to print out a list of sins and recite them, its not like that anymore! Open the door and begin the conversation. If you are not comfortable, the priest will help you along. You are not the first person to have been away so long. We are fortunate to have great, understanding and compassionate priests here at Divine Child. Open your heart to God’s mercy and let the healing begin. Please join us today, Sunday at 11:30 for our 5th Sunday Rosary and then to O’Kelley Hall for Special Olympics Pasta Dinner. Consider it Lenten Prayer and Almsgiving (you can Fast tomorrow!) If you have been thinking about joining Foley Council, call Steve Lentz our Foley Membership Director at 313-949-5162. We ar e hoping to have another Major Degree in late Spring. Remember, you must be at least a 1st Degree member to attend meetings.

Right to Life - LIFESPAN

Have you heard? Here is a case in Indiana which might make a dent in Roe v. Wade. The case concerns a State Law with two provisions. One requires that the remains of aborted fetuses be buried or cremated, rather than disposed of as Medical Waste. The other bars abortions which are performed solely on basis of race, sex or fetal disability. The fetal remains provision in particular is seen as potentially opening the way to a fresh look at the Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, which sidestepped the question of whether the preborn are human beings. The case, Box v. Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky, comes to the Supreme Court on appeal from a decision made last April by a panel of the US Court of Appeals from the 7th District Court. The panel split 2 to 1 on the fetus remains provision. Indiana is defending the law before it gets before the Supreme Court and of course, Planned Parenthood is opposed. They need 4 justices to WIN. There are many more briefs submitted and filed urging the court to consider the case (Box in the name is the Indiana Health Commissioner, Kristina Box). Prayers are needed.
