Things Above from Fr. Bilot The weekend of February 16 and 17, I made the announcement that I am leaving Divine Child on June 30 to begin a new Pastor assignment July 1 at St. Paul Parish in Grosse Pte. Farms. I know that this news was a shock to you, as it was a surprise to me as well. It is evident that this news creates a major change in our lives here at Divine Child. The feelings of uncertainty, fear, confusion and sadness are real and need to be acknowledged and addressed. We need to take time to process this news and let charity be the motivation for our actions, words and thoughts. I want to help you accept the decision I have made and to help you trust in God's providence. When priests are ordained, we make the following promises: to pray the Liturgy of the Hours (Breviary) on a daily basis, to remain celibate, and to be obedient to the Bishop and his successors. These promises provide a freedom to do the work entrusted to us by Jesus Christ and His Church. At this time each year, the need for a priest (either as pastor or associate pastor) is made known to the Bishop. The opening occurs because a priest has died, may be retiring or requesting a change, or is asked to take on a new assignment. Msgr. Halfpenny, the current Pastor of St. Paul, accepted a ministry in the Clergy Office to help support us priests. So, the opening at St. Paul was "posted," meaning that an email goes out to all priests informing them that the parish needs a priest. For example, every three years, Divine Child has a posting for an Associate Pastor, and the opportunity to apply for the opening is thus publicized. (Please understand that I did not apply for the pastorate of St. Paul.) There exists in the Archdiocese an Assignment Board. This Board is comprised of priests within the Archdiocese from all the different ordination years. We priests elect the priests who will serve on the Board. The Board meets with the Auxiliary Bishops and reviews the parish openings to determine who would be best for a given assignment. It was the decision of the Assignment Board to recommend me to the Archbishop as the Pastor for St. Paul. The Board also realized that my 12 years at Divine Child will be completed this June 30. (Normally, we are given six-year terms.) The Archbishop does not work in a vacuum, meaning, he does not make major decisions without consultation. He agreed with the recommendation of the Assignment Board and, thus, I received the call and was asked to accept the request. As I explained at the end of the Masses, I did not say no to the move because I believe in the promise of obedience. I trust the movement of the Holy Spirit, and my entire priesthood is based on this promise. I received the call in obedience and trust that all will be well. If you recall, I stated that if I had said no to any of my other assignments, it is very possible that I would not be here. I did not say no to the Archbishop 12 years ago when he asked me to be the Pastor

Page 33 Page

of Divine Child. I believe that by not saying no now is trusting in the same Spirit. Unfortunately, but naturally, people are speculating as to why I am being moved. What I have written is the truth, and there is nothing more. I am at peace with this new direction in my life. In the next four months, I will continue to be your Pastor, and I will continue to minister as I have for the last 12 years. Granted, there will be transitional aspects, but know that I am completely committed to serving until my assignment is completed. The parish is in great shape financially, structurally and spiritually. Please pray for the new Pastor who will be assigned. I will certainly let you know who it is when I find out. In prayer and gratitude, Fr. Jim Bilot P.S. Please note that Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 6. Please see the bulletin for more details.

Ash Wednesday, March 6 Please join us for Mass at 6:30am, 8:30am or 7:00pm. Ash Wednesday is a day of Fast & Abstinence (Self-imposition of ashes is not permitted.) When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal.

Repentance and Penance In his annual Lenten message for 2019, Pope Francis made the following exhortation: May our Lent this year be a journey along that same path, bringing the hope of Christ also to creation, so that it may be “set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the glorious liberty of the children of God” (Rom 8:21). Let us not allow this season of grace to pass in vain! Let us ask God to help us set out on a path of true conversion. Let us leave behind our selfishness and selfabsorption, and turn to Jesus’ Pasch. Let us stand beside our brothers and sisters in need, sharing our spiritual and material goods with them. In this way, by concretely welcoming Christ’s victory over sin and death into our lives, we will also radiate its transforming power to all of creation. Lent is now before us beginning with Ash Wednesday this week. It is important that we pay attention to Pope Francis’ encouragement to “not allow this season of grace to pass in vain!” Lent is a time that provides so many opportunities for rich spiritual growth and we should avail ourselves fully to the grace of this season. Two topics that I would like to address are repentance and penance. The first words of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark are “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). Repentance, which is a turning away from sin and habits that lead us away from God, is essential to a life of discipleship. While repentance entails making the decision, “these behaviors are harmful and I want to change,” it is not something that can be rooted in our own willpower. Instead, repentance must be rooted in God’s power. The realization that any change or conversion is only possible if we admit our weakness and our inability is essential to repentance. If we are honest with ourselves, we will realize that often we are not even able to see the areas in our life that need change. Pride blinds us to our own faults. Only through a humble prayer of asking the Lord for His light to shine on those dark places in our heart can repentance bear fruit. Now is a great time to make this prayer and ask the Lord how we might use this time of Lent for true repentance. A concept that is hard to understand nowadays is that of penance. Penance as a virtue is a way to practically live repentance through acts that both bring about deeper conversion in our own hearts and help to build up the Body of Christ. As Christians, together we form the “whole Christ” and are individually members of the Body. I was sick the other week with a cold and as I worked to treat my symptoms by having a hot bowl of soup, my whole body felt better. The same is true for us the Church. In our own conversion and growing closer to the Lord, we help build up the whole Church just as through our turning away from the Lord and sin work to cause the Church to loose her radiance and integrity. Acts of penance to make the whole body better should include the main three goals

of Lent which are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Other suitable acts of penance might include taking a cold shower a couple days a week, forgoing electronic media a few nights a week, or avoiding snacks between meals. These small, simple acts of penance can work to be the “hot bowl of soup” that the Church needs to witness to Christ boldly in the world. Fr. Matthew Hood

Come sing and praise the Lord for all He has done for you! With Lent approaching, we encourage all to come and open your hearts and prepare for Jesus . Please join us for a night of Preaching, Music, Confessions, and Adoration. Light refreshments will be served after the event.

“One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.”

What will I learn from this Lenten series?

In No Greater Love: A Biblical W alk Through Christ’s Passion from Ascension Press, you will walk step-by-step with Jesus from the Garden of Gethsemane to the Mount of Calvary. Every step of the way, Old Testament prophesies, messianic expectations, biblical symbolism, and historical context shed light on the mystery of Christ’s suffering and death.

How will this make a difference to me?

With these insights, Catholics can come to a deeper understanding and appreciation of God’s immeasurable and unconditional love – drawing closer to Jesus than ever before!

Who is this Lenten series intended for?

No Greater Love: A Biblical Walk Through Christ’s Passion series is for teens and adults.

What can I expect at each session?

A 30-minute video filmed in the Holy Land featuring Edward Sri, Fr. Mike Schmitz, Jeff Cavins, Curtis Martin, Teresa Tomeo, and other Catholic teachers. The video is followed by a short discussion period to help us recall and absorb the content of the video presentation.

What are some specific questions that will be answered?

    

What was Jesus going through at each moment? How did the Old Testament foretell of Jesus’ death? Why did Christ die for us? What did it accomplish? What was the meaning behind the tearing of the temple veil, the crowning with thorns, and the other events of Christ’s passion? What do the cryptic last words of Jesus mean?

How do I purchase the workbook and study material for the series? You may purchase the series material from www.ascensionpress.com. Can my friend and I share the materials pack? Yes, you may purchase 1 set of study materials (listed above) to share with your spouse or friend. However, to help us plan for seating, please note both names on the registration form. Foley’s Forum Bishop Foley Council 2660 serving Dearborn since 1927

KNIGHTS SPIRITUAL REFLECTION

FOLEY COUNCIL KEEPS GROWING! ARE YOU A MEMBER?...WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

On Sunday, February 17th, nineteen men from around the area joined the Knights of Columbus. Six of those men represented Bishop Foley Council. The men with their families and sponsors attended 8:00 Mass at Our Lady of Angels in Taylor. After Mass the large group went to Fr. Saylor Council in Allen Park for breakfast and the start of their degree work. The men progressed through the Admission Degree and were joined by an additional ten men to go through the second and third degrees, Formation and Knighthood respectively. After the long morning, Saylor Council invited the men for a hot dog lunch before leaving. Andre Senerpida, Brad Kropik, Matthew Fleming, Mike Collins, Piero Boccarossa and Tim Bailey all became 3r d Degree Knights of Bishop Foley Council. The council is looking forward to watching these men grow in faith and fraternity as we work together to plan and implement the many council programs. The council recently re-activated two men who had belonged to councils, but due to busy schedules and relocation dropped out of the order. Giorgio Bertucci renewed his activation as a 3rd Degree Knight with a Major Degree in November and Fernando Aceves r eactivated his fir st degr ee member ship from Idaho. These guys are excited about the good things Foley Council is doing.

Calling Knights from all councils! You are invited to join the Foley Knights at 8:30AM Mass on Saturday, March 9th and then meet for breakfast with a spiritual and inspirational talk from our Chaplain Father Jim Bilot DCHS APR Room Enter Door #13 A $5- donation will be accepted

Foley also received seven active knights who transferred into our council from other councils. Bob Sadler, Giovanni Vitale, Jim Dominiak, Jim Witzleben, John Stawasz, Larry Laliberte and Patrick Berryman all tr ansfer r ed in the last two months. We wish a warm welcome to all these men. The addition of these fifteen Knights into Foley Council helps grow our once small group of Catholic men. It is great to have Catholic men working together to accomplish the missions of our order. Foley Council looks forward to working with all these men to make our council stronger while building a bond of brotherhood. There are so many programs that we work on throughout the year that with the help of these new brother knights, our work load can be lighter and we can have more fun accomplishing our goals. If you have been thinking about joining Foley Council but aren’t quite sure, talk to one of the Foley Knights you see around the church. We are happy to tell you all the great things we are doing in the parish, for our seminarians, around the community and within our homes. You can always call Steve Lentz our Foley Membership Director to get mor e information and have your questions answered. Steve can be reached at 313-949-5162. We are hoping to have another Major Degree in late Spring. Remember you must be at least a 1st Degree member to attend meetings.
