Things Above from Fr. Bilot In reflecting more on the graced time here at Divine Child with the relic of Blessed Fr. Solanus Casey, I was humbled by the amount of people who came to venerate the relic and just take time to be in church. It made me realize again how much we all need to stop from the ordinary routine and come to church and pray. For Blessed Father Solanus Casey, I am sure that he would prefer we came to church to pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament (in the Tabernacle or in the monstrance) than to venerate his bones. Blessed Father Solanus Casey was instilled with the devotion of praying in front of the Blessed Sacrament when he was a boy. Bl. Solanus considered his grandfather, James Casey, "a martyr of the Blessed Sacrament." His grandfather was in Church, praying in front of the Holy Eucharist, when he was killed by the Orangemen, a Protestant group who were celebrating the Invasion of Oliver Cromwell. This event impacted Bl. Solanus’ life and allowed him to grow in holiness - sainthood. Another time, when Bl. Solanus was stationed at a monastery in New York, the late Fr. Benedict Groeschel, a novice at the time of this event, walked into the chapel in the middle of the night to pray. He turned on the flood lights that illuminated the sanctuary. Benedict saw Bl. Solanus kneeling in the sanctuary with his arms outstretched in deep contemplation. The intensity of the lights should have startled Bl. Solanus, but he did not flinch. Benedict believed that Bl. Solanus didn't even know he was there or that the lights were turned on. Benedict shut the lights off and left. Bl. Solanus was known to spend many nights in adoration and serenaded the Lord by playing his violin (though he was not a good violinist). I believe that Bl. Solanus would want all of us to spend time in the church/chapel praying in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Our church is open all day and locked when it gets dark. The chapel (located at the south entrance to the church) is open 24/7. I strongly encourage everyone to make time in their schedule to come and pray before the Lord. In particular, on Tuesdays, we have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. When the Blessed Sacrament is exposed, people must be present. Can you find an hour each Tuesday to come and pray before the Lord? If you are interested in signing up for a Tuesday time, please call the Rectory Office. (The other days of the week do not require a time slot). Last Sunday, we had our Open House for both schools. It was an afternoon to welcome potential future Falcons to check out the schools! Thanks for all who helped make the day an exciting event. That same afternoon, it was brought to my attention that we had a water main break in front of the rectory on Herbert Weier. I had flashbacks of the water main break in the Pearly Gates (behind the church) that shut the water off for three days. Gratefully, the break was

across the street, and the City of Dearborn was able to repair it that evening. It was a cold night, but the men braved the elements to fix it! They were wonderful! Finally, the Education Commission is hosting a Warming Our Hearts evening for couples. Please see Fr. Matt's column for more details or page 5 of the bulletin. Blessings, Fr. Jim Bilot

Capuchin Rope Bakers On February 16 & 17, "On the Rise Bakery" will be here in the Gathering Space selling their delicious baked goods. The bakers are men in the R.O.P.E. program (Reaching Our Potential Everyday) which is sponsored by the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. The men have come from prison or long term addiction programs to restart their lives. Although the men have a bakery on Gratiot and McClellan Ave., they can't make it without the help of the parishes. They thank Divine Child for allowing them to be part of our community and ask that you hold them in your prayers.

Warming Our Hearts

Saint Blaise

When I meet with engaged couples here at the parish who are preparing for marriage, it is always a joy for me to see their excitement as they prepare to celebrate the Sacrament. When we talk about the different expectations that are required as part of the marriage prep process, sometimes the couple’s eyes get big when they realize all that it entails. There is a usual 6-month prep period which includes a series of classes, meetings with both a priest and a counselor and a relationship compatibility inventory. However, I usually remind couples that this really isn’t very much prep for a lifelong vocation. For me, my preparation for my vocation took eight years! The point is, there is so much that the Church can offer to couples to help their marriages to thrive and be a living witness to the love of Christ in the world. Often, though, continued formation is not something that married couples think about. This year, we will be hosting what has become an annual event called “Warming Our Hearts,” which is meant to be a time for couples to come together and continue the important ongoing formation that is helpful for every marriage. The event will take place on Friday, February 15 at 7 PM in the Gathering Space of the church. The evening can be thought of as a date night for couples to come and meet other couples, enjoy wine and cheese, and watch a video on the Sacrament of Marriage. The video that we will be presenting this year is called Marriage: God’s Plan for Life and Love. Here is a description of the video:

Father of mercy and God of all consolation, graciously look upon me and impart to me the blessing which flows from this holy Sacrament. Overshadow me with Your loving kindness, and let this divine Mystery bear fruit in me.

From the dawn of human history, mankind has understood the value of a lifelong, faithful, procreative union of one man and one woman in marriage. This natural bond, which was raised to a Sacrament by Our Lord Jesus Christ, has been the foundation of Christian civilization for over two thousand years. This powerful film presents the enduring Catholic vision and understanding of marriage and the natural law, including the beauty and meaning of human sexuality, family, and the gift of children. This film also addresses the challenges in marriage and family life that we face in our world today. With presentations by Cardinal Raymond Burke, Bishop Mark Davies, Fr. Marcus Holden, Fr. Andrew Pinsent, Louise Kirk, Fiona Mansford and Edmund Adamus, this documentary is an essential resource for every Catholic parish, school, and home. Please consider joining us for this important event. To register, please see the flyer on page 5 of this bulletin. Fr. Matthew Hood

Inspiration to Share for Game Day As excitement builds for the Super Bowl, share the inspiring story of Knights who had careers in the NFL. Below we offer stirring words from Matt Birk, who played 227 games during his 15 years in professional football. He received the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award in 2011 and, in the final game of his career, helped the Baltimore Ravens win Super Bowl XLVII. A father of six, Birk is a member of Father Lucien Galtier Council 4184 in West St. Paul, Minnesota. Find Your “Hall of Fame Catholics” “I had four guys in my life who helped get me back into my faith. I would call them ‘hall of fame Catholics.’ Each one made me say to myself, ‘Whoa. I want to be like him. Everything about him, I want to be like that guy. What’s he about?’ For them, it started with being Catholic.” Start on Your Knees “One of the greatest phrases I ever heard was an old coach talking about football. He said, ‘This game and the NFL, it’s a brutal business. It will bring you to your knees, so why not start there every day?’” Be Intentional “When you retire, people really don’t care about you as a football player anymore. No matter how good you were, it doesn’t matter. And you know what? That’s great; that’s how it should be. Football isn’t who I am or who I was. But being a father, that’s the part of my legacy that I actually care about. ... If you’re not intentional about it, you fall off the track. Every day, I pray for wisdom and endurance and try to raise them the right way.”

Keep the Fundamentals Close “Always keep the fundamentals close. I’m talking about the fundamentals of our faith: Sunday Mass, Confession, prayer, study. That’s our best chance to become the men that god wants us to be.” “And as Knights, we can draw a lot of strength from being part of a community. We’re almost 2 million strong worldwide. We can draw a lot of strength from that. As Proverbs 27:17 says, ‘Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.’ As Catholic men, we need to spend time with other Catholic men who will help us grow.” Adapted from “God at the Center” by Sam Patet, published in Columbia magazine, February 2015. February 8: International Day of Prayer and Awareness against Human Trafficking The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the International Union of Superiors General has designated February 8 as an annual day of prayer and awareness against human trafficking. February 8 is the feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita, who was kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery in Sudan and Italy. Once Josephine was freed, she became a Canossian nun and St. Josephine Bakhita dedicated her life to sharing her testament of deliverance from slavery and comforting the poor and suffering. She was declared a Saint in 2000. On February 8, Catholics all over the world are encouraged to host or attend prayer services to create greater awareness about this phenomenon. Through prayer, we not only reflect on the experiences of those who have suffered through this affront to human dignity, but also comfort, strengthen, and help empower survivors.

Foley’s Forum Bishop Foley Council 2660 serving Dearborn since 1927

FOLEY SUPPORTS LIFE!

Thank you to all the parishioners and council members who helped Bishop Foley Council’s Life Programs. By participating in the Novena for Life last month, we were able to bring more focus on the need for prayer to support life issues that have gone so awry in most recent times. To conclude the nine-day Novena for Life, we held a Prayer Service and Rosary in the church on the evening of the tenth day. The service was supported by the parish Right to Life Committee and High School Pro-Life Club. A small group of 15-20 gathered to listen to a Reading from Jeremiah, proclaim a Psalmody, pray intentions for all life and listen to short reflection from Marc Sierra the Campus Minister at the High School and Moderator of the Pro-Life Club. Mr. Sierra was fresh back from the March for Life in Washington and shared the successes that the pro-life movement is making. The evening ended with a Rosary. Although the short 35-minute service was sparsely attended, we are sure our prayers were heard by God and our hearts opened more deeply to the respect for life. We need to work on getting the word out better next year to promote the Novena and Service. Foley Council sponsored the DCHS Pro-Life Club’s trip to Washington, D.C. for the March for Life again this year. Brother Knight Don Welker represented the council on the trip and helped chaperone the high schoolers who marched. Fr. Matt relayed to me what a great presence the Knights of Columbus had on the march and how much the Knights do to support this annual demonstration. The Knights of Columbus have actively supported the march since its inception in 1974. The Knights are true defenders of life. Nationally, councils have supported the “KofC Ultrasound Initiative” and with the help of the Supreme Council, have celebrated the 1,000th ultrasound machine that was blessed and installed in a Pregnancy Center in Virginia. Just think how many lives have been saved by an undecided mother who sees her developing baby on a screen and decides to choose life over abortion. This program was started in the State of Michigan before the Supreme Council decided to introduce the initiative order-wide. Michigan Knights can be proud of the 53 ultrasound machines placed in Pregnancy Centers around the state and countless lives we have saved. Foley Council will be working with the parish Right to Life group to raise money for yet another ultrasound machine sponsored by diocesan councils. If local councils can raise $20k collectively, the Supreme council matches the amount to purchase a machine for a Pregnancy Center in the state. It has been proven that once a baby is viewed on a screen, the mother will most likely reconsider her decision to end its life. With today’s technology and the improved 3D imaging, these pictures are undoubtedly exhibiting LIFE! It may seem that the Pro-Life Movement is not making strides, especially with the latest legislation and celebration of its passing in the state of New York. As stomach-churning as the thought of ondemand abortion is up to the time of delivery should be to all of us, we must look to our youth. Yes, believe it or not, the number of youth attending the March for Life and their true respect for Life is truly inspiring. The further the anti-life movement moves with celebrating these types of legislation, the more we will see people who have been on the fence about life issues begin to say, “enough is enough, this is just WRONG!”

CSA Minute Evangelization

Those looking for answers to big questions, such as what God’s plan is for their life and how they can be fulfilled, are invited to Kerygma Nights. This four-part series will share the core of what the Gospel reveals through short talks, discussion, and Q & A with others asking these same questions. Attendees may go to one or all of the Kerygma Nights, which began in January and are being held on different days at three locations in the Archdiocese: Mondays at Sacred Heart Parish in Dearborn (February 4, 11, and 18 remaining), Tuesdays (in Spanish) at the National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica in Royal Oak (February 5 and 12 remaining), and Wednesdays at Jolly Pumpkin Restaurant and Tap House in Royal Oak (February 6, 13, 20, and 27). Each event is from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. Kerygma Nights are a program of the archdiocesan Office of Evangelization. Your CSA gifts support the office’s work of helping people encounter God in a new way. For information about CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, go to aod.org.

Saint Agatha - Feb 5 As in the case of Agnes, another virgin-martyr of the early Church, almost nothing is historically certain about this saint except that she was martyred in Sicily during the persecution of Emperor Decius in 251. Legend has it that Agatha, like Agnes, was arrested as a Christian, tortured, and sent to a house of prostitution to be mistreated. She was preserved from being violated, and was later put to death. She is claimed to be the patroness of Sicily. The year after her death, the stilling of an eruption of Mt. Etna was attributed to her intercession. As a result, apparently, people continued to ask her prayers for protection against fire.

“When You Feel Like You Are Drowning In Life, Don’t Worry-Your Lifeguard Walks On Water!” Dir ected by Fr . Cornelius Okeke. March 1-3, 2019 We all struggle in life. It’s part of our journey. Some people struggle more than others. Sometimes we find ourselves in situations we don’t know how we got there, or maybe we just don’t want to take responsibility for our actions. Maybe the situation was so painful (loss of a loved one, divorce, abortion, adultery, feeling unloved, sickness, abused), we buried it deep down inside us that we can no longer function. When we find ourselves in that deep dark place within our lives remember your LIFEGUARD WALKS ON WATER! Fr. Cornelius is presently ministering in Ecorse in the Archdiocese of Detroit, where he is known for his captivating preaching. His past experience includes teaching in a diocesan seminary and preaching retreats in Nigeria. He has a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the Gregorian University in Rome and is the author of five books and is involved in the training of formators for the African Continent. For more information or to register for the retreat, please call either Dee Woolley* at 313-999-9386, Lauren Howling at 313-3778602 or Lia Maloney at 313-299-2992.
