Things Above from Fr. Bilot It’s hard to believe that we are now over halfway through the month of February! Now, there’s only a little over a month until spring! I always remember around this time of year, Fr. Kucyk would be counting the days until spring so that he could go outside and start playing in the flower beds. Thus, if you are getting weary of the cold, wind, snow and freezing temperatures, don't despair - spring is almost here! It has been awhile since I gave you an update on the field house building construction. The new building is located at the south end of the home bleachers. It is part of the DC Alumni Association athletic complex, and the funds were raised during the Investing in Excellence Capital Campaign (held a couple of years ago). Contractors are working on the interior of the building: painting, installing doors, flooring, lighting, and sound system, etc. In the spring, we will be installing two beautiful medallions of the Holy Family (re-productions from the main stained glass window in the church) at the peak of the roof on both sides of the building. It will be back-lit, and I believe it will be stunning at night! Another visible way of evangelizing and bringing holiness to our campus and community! This project has taken much longer than expected. The building will house locker rooms for the sports teams, a coach's conference room, storage for sporting equipment, a maintenance area and a large meeting room for athletic practices (like cheer, pom, wrestling) and for parish meetings, as well. It will be a well-utilized and very functional building for the whole parish. We hope to have this facility blessed in May! Lent is a little over three weeks away. This year, we are going to have a Lenten series entitled, "No Greater Love: A Biblical Walk Through Christ’s Passion." You can register for the series now, and we will host afternoon and evening sessions. This Lent, I would like to focus on Christ's Passion and his extraordinary zeal for reconciliation. Please take some time to pray and reflect about joining us. We need to get out of our spiritual comfort zone and allow the Lord to help us to grow closer to him, through understanding our own passion/suffering and our need for reconciliation. Blessings, Fr. Jim Bilot

Capuchin Rope Bakers will be in the Gathering Space this weekend selling their delicious baked goods. Please stop by and support this worthwhile cause.

Sacred Silence Fr. Stephen Burr, the Vice Rector at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, and a former Associate Pastor here at Divine Child, is working on his thesis for his doctorate on the topic of sacred silence during Mass. Here is an article that he shared with the priests of the Archdiocese on how we might incorporate silence into our celebration of Mass: Are there times that you’re exhausted from the noise of the day? Did your phone just ring? Is that commercial louder than before? Do you ever get a moment of silence to collect yourself before God? If you do, it’s probably brief. In the liturgical reflection guidebook, Meditations Before Mass, Fr. Romano Guardini states that Jesus Christ “can only be recognized from silence…The constant talker will never, or at least rarely, grasp the truth.” Thus, if we miss pausing in the busyness of a day, we could easily miss the Truth (Jesus Christ) while only experiencing noise and worldly realities. Did you know that Mass is designed to have moments of silent prayer? Not prolonged awkward moments of silence, but times for the assembled community to relate to God in silence. Silence is often lost to more easily perceived active prayer at Mass, yet silence is a full, active and conscious participation, as stated in the Second Vatican Council, to engage the mysteries of the Mass. There are spiritual benefits of utilizing silence at Mass. Without silent moments, when would the graces of the Mass be realized? If the Mass is filled with only actions and absent of silent contemplation, an individual may miss an opportunity to relate to God. Pope Benedict XVI states in Dei Verbum, “Only in silence can the word of God find a home in us, as it did in Mary, woman of the word and, inseparably, woman of silence.” There will always be some uncontrollable noise at Mass. Some noise cannot be avoided. However, moments for silent prayer can be activated. So, what are we to do? An easy approach is to attempt to pray in silence at three times: 1. Penitential Act- when we call to mind our sins at the beginning of Mass, consider God’s gift of mercy in silence; 2. Liturgy of the Word- after the homily, reflect upon a phrase from scripture or idea from the homily in silence; 3. Liturgy of the Eucharist- following Communion, meditate on being in God’s presence or with Jesus Christ in the Eucharist in silence. It will take some effort from all of us to become accustomed to these moments for silent prayer. It will be a time of communal silent prayer to be still with God. Together at Mass, we can have a respite from the noisy world and times of silence to be with God. Fr. Matthew Hood

What will I learn from this Lenten series?

In No Greater Love: A Biblical Walk Through Christ’s Passion from Ascension Press, you will walk step-by-step with Jesus from the Garden of Gethsemane to the Mount of Calvary. Every step of the way, Old Testament prophesies, messianic expectations, biblical symbolism, and historical context shed light on the mystery of Christ’s suffering and death.

How will this make a difference to me?

With these insights, Catholics can come to a deeper understanding and appreciation of God’s immeasurable and unconditional love – drawing closer to Jesus than ever before!

Who is this Lenten series intended for?

No Greater Love: A Biblical Walk Through Christ’s Passion series is for teens and adults.

What can I expect at each session?

A 30-minute video filmed in the Holy Land featuring Edward Sri, Fr. Mike Schmitz, Jeff Cavins, Curtis Martin, Teresa Tomeo, and other Catholic teachers. The video is followed by a short discussion period to help us recall and absorb the content of the video presentation.

What are some specific questions that will be answered?  What was Jesus going through at each moment?  How did the Old Testament foretell of Jesus’ death?  Why did Christ die for us? What did it accomplish?  What was the meaning behind the tearing of the temple veil, the crowning with thorns, and the other events of Christ’s passion?  What do the cryptic last words of Jesus mean?

What’s the cost for the series material?

A $ 25 material fee provides you with the No Greater Love Study Pack which includes: a 213-page paperback book titled, No Greater Love, plus a full color illustrated workbook with session overviews, talk notes for the 5-weeks of video teaching presentations, plus an online access code to view the videos at home.

Can my friend and I share the materials pack?

Yes, you may purchase 1 set of study materials (listed above) to share with your spouse or friend. However, to help us plan for seating, please note both names on the registration form.

Is pre-registration necessary?

We ask that you preregister by Monday February 25 th at noon to assure delivery of the participant materials. After that date, you’re still welcome to register to save a spot to view the video series at Divine Child, but you’ll need order your material directly from Ascension Press.

I can’t attend every week. Can I still participate?

Yes! Come to as many of the weekly lessons as possible. The materials fee provides online access to all the videos, so you can keep up with the series. Is this series only for Divine Child parishioners? Everyone is welcome! In fact, we hope that you tell a friend (or two) about this Lenten series.

Registration options through noon February 25th

1) Registration & pay online: www.churchofthedivinechild.org ($2 service charge will be applied to online registration) OR 2) Complete form below and return with payment to parish office or Sunday collection. 1 set of study materials: $25 materials fee (cash or check payable to Church of the Divine Child)

Greeters Ministry “Welcome one another, then, as Christ welcomed you, for the glory of God” Romans 15:7

Welcome to the new Divine Child Greeters Ministry! 

We are looking for a variety of ages, male, female, singles, couples, or families, those who have been longtime parishioners and those who are relatively new to serve in this important ministry! Our goal is to provide each person who enters and leaves the church the experience of a warm Christ-like welcome and a fond farewell with the invitation to come back and celebrate Mass with us again the next week. Greeters will be scheduled for specific Masses throughout the year, particularly those attended by many new visitors or those with many people returning to the church like Easter, Jubilarian Mass, Mass of Remembrance, Christmas, etc.

Greeters will be able to select the Masses and times at which they will serve.

Greeters will arrive about 30 minutes before Mass and stay for about 15 minutes after Mass.

If you are interested in serving in this new ministry, please contact Jacquie Ferracciolo at divinechildgreetersministry@gmail.com or (734) 765-0774 for more information! I look forward to serving with you!

Fr. Matt enjoying the Chili Cha Cha with parishioners Richard & Amy Moore.

St. Vincent de Paul Top Hats Overflow with Hearts Top Hat at Sacred Heart Church happened to coincide with Mother Nature’s official first snowstorm dumping six inches of snow, with patches of freezing rain on the weekend of January 19-20. Top Hat jump-started SVdP/Capuchin Soup Kitchen’s 12th Annual Chili Cha Cha. It represents a significant and vital income when added to the coffers of the fund-raiser. Despite low attendance during that weekend, parishioners managed to show spirit and brave the snowstorm by attending church. Lucky for SVdP, parishioners hit the ball out of the ballpark, when they stopped and dropped cash into Top Hats. The collection clobbered all of the prior year’s collections. In a few words, Divine Intervention played a role, without a doubt. But, why did the Top Hats overflow with hearts? It’s because everyone gave from their hearts. Translated to dollars, Sacred Heart gave $2,398.13. Amazing! Well done! Divine Child’s Top Hat, scheduled on the prior weekend, had good weather while they collected a successful Top Hat filled with hearts that translated to $1,496.39. Excellent! Top Hat, the prior year, netted $3,500. This recent Top Hat netted $3,894.52! Definitely, a solid $394 more than the prior year! Our SVdP Conference warmly appreciates your donations which positively impacted our Chili Cha Cha. We pray for blessings upon our contributors. You truly have our utmost gratitude. More final financial data will be forthcoming soon, after Sacred Heart’s Elementary school St. Valentine’s Day school collection headed up by Principal Yee. This is our first year for the Chili Cha Cha’s collection at the school and everyone is excited for their participation. It teaches children to be compassionate to the poor and we are truly blessed by Principal Yee’s forward thinking. As always, God Bless. ~~Mindy Delano, Treasurer of SVdP

Church of the Divine Child 1055 North Silvery Lane Dearborn, MI 48128 To whom it may concern, We are writing to extend our sincere thank you for your generous gifting of clothing and toys this past Christmas. Surprisingly, each year we have “just enough,” and this year was no different. Because of your generosity, we were able to serve over forty families from our neighborhood and several more families from The Head Start Program on our premises. We wish we could record for you the smiles and expressions of gratitude on the faces of the recipients of the gifts. A testimony of our call to evangelize.

We realize that there is a great deal of planning and collaboration that goes on in the implementation of this annual program and we marvel and thank God for you for your faithfulness to our conference. Please contact us if there is anything we can do to assist you in the planning.

Foley’s Forum Bishop Foley Council 2660 serving Dearborn since 1927

FOLEY HOSTS 2nd ANNUAL FREE-THROW CONTEST AT DIVINE CHILD Last Sunday, the elementary school buzzed with twenty-two kids and their parents as they competed against each other in the second annual Foley Free-Throw Contest. Individual councils are invited to host a Free-Throw Competition with the winner competing in the District Competition, Regional, State and National if their skill allows. Since Bishop Foley Council was the only council in District 5 to host a contest, the winners from the Foley Free Throw will automatically advance to the Regional (South Detroit Diocese) Competition.

Above: Some Foley Knights before starting the fun!

Foley Community Director Frank Paolini again chaired this year’s event at Divine Child. The event was well organized; there were three baskets set up for the competition. One hoop was designated for Boys 12-14, one for Girls 12-14 and one for the combined Boys & Girls 9-11. The contestants had the opportunity for 3 warm up shots and then took 15 consecutive shots from the free-throw line for the contest. The Boys/Girls 9-11 Winner was Alexis Hansen. Alexis made 12 of her 15 attempts at the basket. The Girls 12-14 Winner was Lilliana Ammar, making 11 of her 15 shots. The Boys 12 -14 group became a little more competitive with last year’s champion David Gladd, Ryan Mitchell and Sean O’Donnell tying by making 8 of their 15 baskets. The three boys went to a shoot-off where they had five more attempts at the basket. In the end, Ryan Mitchell was crowned the 12-14 Boy’s Champion with 3 of his 5 shots being good. Congratulations to these winners who will advance to the Regional Competition held at St. John Neumann on March 3rd. The baskets were manned by four volunteer Knights and their families, two judges, a score keeper and a rebounder. Thanks to ALL the Foley Knights, their wives and families who came out to lend a hand and make this another successful event. The event took less than two hours to complete. We had hoped to see more interest from the fine CYO Basketball Community at Divine Child; if you weren’t able to join the fun this year, start practicing those shots for next year! STAY TUNED TO THIS SECTION TO FIND OUT WHO OUR NEWEST FOLEY KNIGHTS ARE! Today is our Major Degree, but don’t worry! If you missed the boat, there will be another opportunity coming up soon. Although our last opportunity to join has come and gone, we are looking forward to another Major Degree coming up in June. Call our Membership Director Steve Lentz at 313-9495162 for more information – or talk to any Foley Knight about joining our council. Are you a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus that would like to join the Patriotic 4th Degree? A 4th Degree Exemplification is coming up on March 2nd. To get your paperwork in and get more information, contact GK Dominic Raona – 734-604-8204.

Right to Life – LIFESPAN

Defunding Abortion

Did you know? Congresswomen Virginia F ox of North Carolina has filed legislation that would revoke Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funding via the Title to Family Planning Program. The bill is H.R. 296, and the Defunding of Planned Parenthood Act of 2019 respectively. It is clear, abortion is not family planning. Title X grants to family planning entities, not abortion providers. The Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act will keep it this way. The bill would codify President Trump’s Protect Life Rule that excludes abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, from receiving Title X funding. This legislation would ban taxpayer funding. Christian Service Christian service coordinators from parishes throughout our Archdiocese gathered at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit last week for Parish Engagement with the Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan. Professionals from CCSEM spoke about the process of being a licensed foster care family through the organization, and the social stigma behind mental health issues and combatting the causes so people in need of treatment will seek it. Sessions like these, presented by the archdiocesan Office of Christian Service and Health Care Ministries, are supported through your CSA gifts. For information about CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, go to aod.org.

HUMAN LIFE AND DIGNITY

“Society...must respect, defend and promote the dignity of every human person.” Each individual has worth, as St. John Paul II said, “at every moment and in every condition.” The value does not come from age, education, income, or productivity, but is inherent. MCC supports:  Policies that recognize the value of every person’s life.  State initiatives that provide and expand alternatives to abortion and assistance to pregnant women, including adoption.  Measures to limit abortion and promote the safety of women.  Regulations on research policies which violate the dignity of the human person and the sanctity of human life.  Policies that seek to reduce violence in society, including the reduction of gun violence.  Upholding the constitutional ban on the death penalty and the statutory ban on assisted suicide.  Policies that expand and improve end-oflife care through a person’s natural death.  Policies that support the nature of the human person.

CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

“As the family goes, so goes the nation, and so goes the whole world in which we live.” The family, beginning with one man and one woman in marriage, is the cornerstone of society. Supporting healthy marriages and families, as well as protecting against violence, abuse, and other challenges, produces strong communities. MCC supports:  Promoting the traditional definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman.  Tax policies that protect and promote the stability of marriage and the institution of the family.  Policies that strengthen the long-standing relationship between the State of Michigan and nonprofit agencies in the provision of child placement services.  Amending Michigan’s no-fault divorce laws.  Policies that combat human tracking, domestic violence, and abuse of vulnerable persons.
