Things Above from Fr. Bilot As we embark on this second week of Advent, I hope that we are all making time to reflect on our relationship with the Lord Jesus. I think about when someone I know is celebrating a birthday, especially in my immediate family, I always reach out to them to wish them a happy birthday. I realize that I don't always tell them how grateful I am for their life, because I assume they know. (This is not good!) Of course, they do know that I love and care deeply for them, but taking the time to think about their life, and how they have impacted my life, doesn't always happen as best as it can. Birthdays, like many other events in life, can become too routine. When we allow something significant to become common, we miss the beauty and wonder of God's love working in their life and our life. I believe the significance of Christ's birth, too, has become common place. Each year, we do the same things - set up the tree, decorate the house, bake, shop, wrap and exchange gifts. All those endeavors are good, but they overshadow the baby laying in the manger, and it makes God becoming a human being rather common. Going through the routine aspects of Christmas can distort the beauty of what God has given us and the impact that Jesus' life has on our lives and our salvation! To help us get back to the basics of why we celebrate Christmas in the first place, we need to focus on the purpose of Christmas. Christmas is the celebration of the Mass of Christ wherein we celebrate the Holy Eucharist. The Holy Eucharist feeds us with the Real Presence of Jesus Christ, human and divine. Christmas brings us into the life of the Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Christmas, if we celebrate it for its intended purpose, is when we appreciate the gift of Jesus in our lives, who he is for us, and what he has done for us! He was born to save us, help us and guide us back home to our Heavenly Father. In our parish, we are asking everyone to use the rest of Advent to reflect on the following quote in hopes of helping us understand why we celebrate Christmas. The following reflection comes from the Latin American Bishops, who were gathered in Aparecida, Brazil, and authored largely by Cardinal Bergoglio, who is now Pope Francis. We are entitling the quote, The Greatest Gift: "Knowing Jesus is the best gift any person can receive; that we have encountered Him is the best thing that has happened in our lives and making Him known by our word and deeds is our joy." (This is also printed next to my column for you to cut out and put in a prominent place. Please take time to reflect on its meaning each day).

Page 33 Page

To begin to have a holy Christmas, I believe the best way for us to "know Jesus" is to encounter Him in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. In Confession, we meet our loving, compassionate and merciful God, who touches our minds and hearts with His healing power. Confession is a powerful encounter with Jesus Christ. Therefore, we will begin to hear Confessions on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 p.m., in addition to the Saturday schedule of 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. I suggest you avail yourself of the Sacrament now. Receiving the Grace of the Sacrament will help us focus, calm our being, and guide us to the best gift to receive on Christmas - the Holy Eucharist. In hopeful expectation, Fr. Jim Bilot

Prayer For Christmas Guests During the first Christmas, Mary and Joseph were greeted by rejection and refusal as they sought to find a place for the birth of their newborn son. As we all know, there was “no room for them in the inn,” (Luke 2:7). While this was the experience of Mary and Joseph, this certainly should not be our model for hospitality as we approach our celebration of Christmas. In introducing this model of having a “radically mission oriented Christmas” our goal should be to reach out, as much as possible, to any visitors over the Christmas holiday. We have the chance to undo the rejection and refusal of Mary and Joseph by welcoming our guests with gracious hospitality. The author of the Book of Hebrews encourages us to practice hospitality by saying, “Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels,” (Heb. 13:2). I would take that a step further and say that in showing hospitality over the Christmas holidays, we might unknowingly entertain Mary and Joseph themselves. For Mary and Joseph represent each person and family wandering in the cold looking for warmth, welcome and the truth found in the Divine Child, Jesus Christ. Our first step of preparation for this radical hospitality must begin in prayer. I would like to ask each of you to join me and Fr. Jim, along with our parish staff, in prayer for our Christmas guests. You hopefully have already noticed the “Intercessory Prayer for Christmas Guests” in the bulletin and begun to pray it. In addition to this prayer, as we continue through the season of Advent, it might be helpful to spiritually adopt a visiting family who will be here for our Christmas Masses. You do not need to know the specific identity of that family but entrust it to the Lord to figure out those details. In your own family, please pray and do penance for this visiting family that they are greeted with welcome and that their presence for our Christmas Masses is a time for true encounter with God. Through prayer, we can prepare to welcome the Marys and Josephs in our midst! Fr. Matthew Hood

Please be generous to our beloved Religious Sisters and Brothers!

Prayer For Christmas Guests Dear Lord, As we prepare for your coming, let us reflect on the Journey Mary and Joseph took on their way to Bethlehem. They were tired and alone, and there was no room for them at the inn. Help us to open the doors of our hearts and our parish as we welcome guests this Christmas. We pray that those who come will feel welcomed and experience your great love and peace through each of us. Help us to see with your eyes, serve with your hands, and to embrace those who will come into our midst. Amen.

The Falcon’s Nest will be in the Gathering Space AFTER EACH MASS this weekend! Don’t miss out on a chance to get your Christmas shopping done early for the Falcon fans in your family!

Church of the Divine Child Parish will be hosting a first-class relic of Blessed Solanus Casey Thurs, January 10 - Tues, January 15, 2019 We invite you to come to Divine Child parish during these days to learn about the life and works of Blessed Solanus and pray for his intercession. Please check www.churchofthedivinechild.org for the schedule of prayer services, veneration and exhibit times. Fr. Solanus Casey served at St. Bonaventure Monastery in Detroit. He became known as the doorkeeper who would provide soup for the hungry, a healing touch to the ill, and wise and compassionate counsel to the troubled. He spent his life in service to people, whether Catholic, non-Catholic, nonChristian or atheist, and encouraged everyone to “foster confidence in God and thank Him ahead of time.”

Console parents who have lost that gift through abortion, and lead them to forgiveness and healing through the Divine Mercy of your Son. Teach us to cherish and to care for family and friends until God calls them home. Help us never to see others as burdens. Guide our public officials to defend each and every human life through just laws. Inspire us all to bring our faith into public life, to speak for those who have no voice. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who is Love and Mercy itself. Amen. 2010 Respect Life Liturgy Guide, USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities.

HELPING HANDS!!!

Area Knights Work Together to Help Those in Need with the help of some Girls on the Run!

This past Monday the four Grand Knights from District 5 Councils met with their District Deputy to discuss the new Faith in Action programs that were recently introduced by Supreme Council. The meeting also afforded the opportunity for the Grand Knights to deliver the gifts donated by their councils for Holy Cross Services. Grand Knights Dominic Raona from Bishop Foley, Vernell Smith from Msgr. Champion, Chuck Morrison from Robert Jones and Len Vokal from Fr. Saylor Council delivered the wrapped gifts to DD Jim Pease to take to the State Meeting in Lansing. Each District Deputy from around the state collects gifts of sweatshirts, hoodies, sheets, hats, mittens and hygiene kits from each council in his district. All the gifts are transported to State Winter Meeting and are enough to fill a semi trailer. The trailer is delivered straight to HCS where they are distributed on Christmas morning to the residents of the program. Oftentimes, these are the only gifts that the residents have to open on Christmas day. Knights of Columbus from around Michigan have been providing this service for decades. You may remember Holy Cross Services as Boysville of Michigan that was established in 1948. From the beginning, the Knights of Columbus has partnered with them. Holy Cross Services has grown from one location to over 20 sites around the state and continues to provide hope and healing to children as well as adults and their families. HCS is spiritually driven yet serves people of all beliefs. Each day HCS touches the lives of over 1,500 people who are abused, neglected, traumatized or suffer from substance abuse and mental health issues. Every year the State KofC presents HCS with a check for monies collected from EVERY KofC member around the state. Last year’s check to HCS was in excess of $180,000! Thanks to Brother Foley Knight John Orischak and his wife Elaine for purchasing and wrapping gifts supplied by our council. This year included with our Christmas gifts were twenty-one hygiene bags that were put together by DC Elementary School students of the Girls on the Run program. Girls on the Run is a group of 2nd- 4th grade girls who meet after school. The group is moderated by Mrs. Grenn and strives to provide a positive environment to inspire young girls to be healthy, happy and confident. These girls made handmade cards that were included with each hygiene kit. Twenty-one lucky ladies at HCS will be blessed to receive one of these bags. This is a great example how the DC community works with the Knights to help others. *** FOLEY MEMBERS – TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO RSVP FOR ANTONIO’S DINNER **** Are you a Catholic man who would like to join our council! Our next major degree will not be until February 17th! This will give you the opportunity to learn on your own about the works of the Knights of Columbus. I encourage you to visit www.KofC.org to explore all the programs and benefits that being a Knight offers. There are many videos of Knights working together to do good as well as testimonials of men whose lives have been changed. After you visit the website, call our Membership Director Steve Lentz at 313-949-5162 - DO NOT SIGN UP TO BE A KNIGHT ONLINE! We can answer your questions in a council-specific way, so you have a better idea how our council fits with the Supreme plan. You can always talk to any Foley Knight about joining our council.

Right to Life – LIFESPAN

Planned Parenthood coming to Livonia. YOUR VOICE AND ACTION IS NEEDED! Planned Parenthood is reopening in Livonia. During the 20 years they resided in south Livonia, their landlord struggled to rent to other tenants. Fortunately, they lost their lease in April. Since then, Planned Parenthood was rejected by another group of tenants at Newburg and 6 Mile. This lead them to purchasing a building at 15707 Farmington Rd. (NW corner of Rayburn) just north of the Livonia City Center. Hopefully, we will be able to put enough pressure on them that they decide it is not worth the effort. This pressure must come from the citizens of Livonia and surrounding communities. Call, email, or write City Hall: City Council, 33000 Civic Center Drive, Livonia, MI 48154 or Mayor Dennis Wright, (734) 466-2200 and mayor@ci.livonia.mi.us. For more info: LIFESPAN 734.422.6230

Tax Advantaged Ways to Give to Our Parish

Parishioners may consider these two ways to lower their tax bill through charitable giving at the year end. Gifts of Appreciated Securities Gifts of appreciated securities continue to be beneficial for donors since they offer significant tax advantages including income tax deductions and avoidance of tax on capital gains if the donor sells the highly appreciated securities. With markets remaining at high levels in spite of recent volatility, many parishioners likely have some highly appreciated securities in their portfolios. Through a gift of appreciated securities to benefit our parish, including through the Catholic Services Appeal, donors who itemize may receive an income tax deduction up to the full market value of the securities and can also avoid capital gains tax on the appreciation. In essence, you may save twice—on income tax and capital gains tax. IRA Rollover --Qualified Charitable Distribution The IRA qualified charitable distribution (QCD) provides a way for donors 70 ½ and older to receive a tax benefit for their generosity. It is beneficial because the QCD will not be included in adjusted gross income and is therefore not subject to tax. This is now more beneficial in view of the increased standard deduction in the new tax law. A donor can make a QCD of up to $100,000 annually directly from the IRA to a charity, and as an added benefit, the QCD satisfies the donor’s required minimum distribution. Parishioners 70 ½ or older should consult with their IRA administrator for the procedure to make a QCD to our parish. For More Information, contact Colleen Johnson at the DC Advancement Office at 313-216-0891. Please consult your tax or financial advisor. Our parish and the Archdiocese of Detroit are not engaged in legal or tax advisory service. The examples listed above are intended to provide useful information of a general character only. For specific advice and assistance please consult a qualified tax or financial advisor.
