Things Above from Fr. Bilot BLESSINGS OF JOY ON THE SOLEMNITY OF THE HOLY FAMILY How appropriate, as we continue to celebrate the wonder and awe of Christmas, the Catholic Church has us rejoicing this weekend with the gift of the Holy Family. Even though throughout the Church year there are major feast days dedicated to each member of the Holy Family - Jesus, Mary and Joseph, the Feast of the Holy Family commemorates their life together, and the celebration focuses on religious family life. In Western Christianity, veneration for the Holy Family as a group, rather than as individuals did not arise until the 17th century and it was officially recognized as a feast day when it was formally instituted in 1921 under Pope Benedict XV. The Feast of the Holy Family is a time for all of us to stop and ponder the mystery of the family. Jesus, Mary and Joseph who show us the way through working together, respecting each person's call from God to do His work and to help each other grow in holiness. In Archbishop Vigneron's Pastoral Letter, Unleash the Gospel a whole section is devoted to the family, allowing us to model the Holy Family. He states that each family must embrace their role in the Church and with the support of other families and single persons, "actively seek the spiritual and social renewal of their neighborhoods, schools and places of work." "Such families and individuals would display a strikingly counter-cultural way of living: grounded in prayer, Sacraments and attention to Scripture; unusually gracious hospitality; a capacity to include those on the margins of society; and joyful confidence in the providence of God even in difficult and stressful times." I realize that some families are tight and work well together. Other families are grieving through tragedy, death, infertility and difficult stressors. Others are struggling with families destroyed through infidelity, divorce and addiction. Despite all these odds, if we as Catholic's believe in the Incarnation, the birth of Jesus Christ, we will have hope despite the odds. Hope births new life, new beginnings, new love. Hope can and does bring healing. We must believe that Jesus' birth is about hope that the Lord can do all things and He can make all things new. We must have faith which allows us to trust. Trust builds our confidence to fulfill our mission in the family. The Holy Family teaches us what to do. First, we must reclaim Sunday and attend Mass. They were faithful to Worship despite the excuses that could creep in. They studied Scripture as a family. It was the center of their family life. The Holy Family created time to eat together without distraction. They prayed together. The Holy Family modeled the love of God to one another and to the stranger. On the Feast of the Holy Family, our Knights of Columbus, are helping us reestablish family life. We will pray a prayer together at the end of the Prayers of the Faithful. We will be asked to pray throughout this holy season of Christmas for renewal in the family.

May the joy and beauty and purity of the Holy Family - Jesus, Mary and Joseph pervade your hearts and bring new life and new hope into all families! In gratitude for being part of the Divine Child family, Fr. Jim Bilot

God Saves Us Through a Family “From the exemplary witness of the Holy Family, each family can find precious guidance for the style and choices of life, and can draw strength and wisdom for each day’s journey. Our Lady and Joseph teach us to welcome children as a gift from God, to beget them and raise them, cooperating wonderfully in the work of the Creator and giving to the world, in each child, a new smile. It is in a united family that children bring their existence to maturity, living out the meaningful and effective experience of freely given love, tenderness, reciprocal respect, mutual understanding, forgiveness and joy.” (Pope Francis, Angelus Address, December 27, 2015) In the plan of salvation for the human race, God did not choose to save us in a grandiose and overpowering manifestation of His omnipotence but, instead, He chose to save us through a family. The first family that God promised salvation through was not the Holy Family but the family of Abraham (then Abram). In Genesis we read, “He [God] took him outside and said: Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can. Just so, he added, will your descendants be. Abram put his faith in the Lord, who attributed it to him as an act of righteousness” (Genesis 15:5-6). For Abraham, it took an act of faith for him to trust that God could fulfill these promises through his family. In our own families, we also need to make an act of faith at times that our own families can be a source of sanctification for us. The Holy Family, which is God’s chosen means of saving us, should be a constant example and encouragement to each of us that holiness, peace and salvation can be possible in and through family life. It is in the family that we first learn virtue and how to love and be loved. It is also through the family that we learn to have faith in God. The examples of the quiet life of Jesus, Mary and Joseph in Nazareth reminds us that success in life is not about great accomplishments but in letting ourselves be changed, and at times purified, through loving our family. May this feast be a time to give forgiveness generously, to seek forgiveness humbly, to renew the love in our own families, to give thanks to God for our families, and to pray for the members of our family. Fr. Matthew Hood “This much we know: God wants His Church back. We must not give up hope, A new star will lead the way. God will give us — His people — a new path. And, while words alone do not bring healing, we can never stray from our promise to listen to, walk with and support victim-survivors — ever.” Archbishop Allen Vigneron December 2, 2018

Divine Child Parish will be hosting a First-Class Relic of Blessed Solanus Casey January 10 - January 15 Exodus 90 is a challenging 90-day period of prayer and asceticism, supported by a fraternity of 5-7 like-minded men that will begin this January here at Divine Child. The journey of Exodus 90 is centered around 4 Pillars.

90 DAYS The 90-day benchmark is not an arbitrary number; it is essential for freedom. That’s the period it takes to re-learn the joy and satisfaction of self-mastery and freedom. Most men consider the 90-day period of purification a manly challenge, something that may have been missing in their lives for a long time. In addition, researchers have found that it takes about 90 days – the length of many rehabilitation models, including AA – for the brain to “reset” itself. Interestingly enough, people in recovery have known this saying forever “90 meetings in 90 days” because when the brain is engaged in a habit for 90 days it becomes easier to do. After Exodus 90, what was once difficult and a challenge, becomes a new way of life. PRAYER Men will adopt the discipine of daily prayer – taking on the story of the Israelites journeying from the slavery of sin into the freedom of the promised land. With a daily passage from the book of Exodus and a corresponding, written meditation, as well as communal prayer with other men from Divine Child. ASCETICISM Learning to deny themselves, Exodus 90 men take up their cross, and learn to offer up cold showers, fasting from all alcohol, sweets, eating between meals, television and movies, televised sports, and more. In emptying themselves of modern comfort, noise and vice, men dispose themselves greatly to the voice and presence of God in their lives. FRATERNITY Men band together, in groups of four or more, for encouragement and accountability as well as to share difficulties and challenges through the 90 days. Weekly fraternity meetings provide the context for a virtuous brotherhood, serving to foster greater communion and friendship within, and after, the 90 days. Join the men of Divine Child in persevering through 90 days of prayer for our families, our Church, and for our own relationship with the Lord. Men will be separated into age groups (17+) and will meet once a week in the Divine Child gathering space. Materials can be purchased at exodus90.com. An informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 15th @ 8 pm in the Divine Child gathering space. If interested in joining, please email: dcmen90@gmail.com Please provide your name, age and phone number. Co-Sponsored by the Foley Knights of Columbus

We invite you to come to Divine Child parish during these days to learn about the life and works of Blessed Solanus and pray for his intercession. Fr. Solanus Casey served at St. Bonaventure Monastery in Detroit. He became known as the doorkeeper who would provide soup for the hungry, a healing touch to the ill, and wise and compassionate counsel to the troubled. He spent his life in service to people, whether Catholic, nonCatholic, non-Christian or atheist, and encouraged everyone to “foster confidence in God and thank Him ahead of time.”

Sacred Heart/Divine Child St. Vincent de Paul & Capuchin Soup Kitchen

St. Vincent de Paul SVdP Saves Fire Stricken Family Sometimes, “hunches” pay off. And then, sometimes you realize a “hunch” may very well have been the Holy Spirit which swoops in and allows you to have the “light-bulb” moment. Recently, a local apartment complex experienced a devastating fire, causing families the chaos in being displaced. Worse yet, for some families, nothing survived but the clothes on their backs. SVdP was called upon for one particular displaced family, and of course, we assisted since the family resided within our normal parish boundaries. Vincentians Dr. Dave Bialy and wife, Nancy, was assigned to this tragic case, along with new Vincentian, Shelly Dzingle, who they were mentoring. President Pamela Szpytman collaborated and counseled Vincentians through this case, taking advantage of keen networking to successfully pull off the challenging circumstances. The Sacred Heart/Divine Child SVdP wishes to give a shout out with immense gratitude and “thank-you” to last year’s Silver Spoon Sponsors and Good Samaritans, along with immense thanks to attendees and contributors from last year’s Chili Cha Cha. We also thank all loyal donors who give throughout the year, which enables our Vincentians to carry forward our mission. What about the “hunch?” Well, thanks to parishioner, Mary Anne Linzell, a Silver Spoon Sponsor, her donations make things happen, as well. Last autumn, she contributed bathroom “linens” to our cause, so I stored the nice, clean linens down in my basement for a future client who would express such a need. Well, guess what? This fire-stricken family was gifted these bath towels, hand towels, and wash cloths, thanks to Mary Anne. This family was overwhelmed with gratefulness. Like Mary Anne, you, too, could be an Angel of Mercy. SVdP just started their campaign called Silver Spoon Sponsors for the upcoming Chili Cha Cha! We will continue collecting monies right through to January 26, 2019, the date of the event. We cannot express enough the serious nature of our mission serving the needs of the needy. Together, we can make a difference. Please send your donation to Sacred Heart Parish Office, Attention: Silver Spoon Sponsor, 912 South Military, Dearborn, MI 48124 Please remember the poor box, the Silver Spoon Sponsors, or Good Samaritans. Thank you and may God bless you abundantly for your compassion for the poor. ~ Mindy Delano

THE FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY The Feast of the Holy Family is sometimes deemphasized. It is traditionally celebrated the first Sunday after Christmas. This year, we are putting emphasis on the Feast by inviting all families to make a Consecration to the Holy Family. This weekend, after the Prayers of the Faithful, Father will lead us in the Consecration Prayer. This beautiful prayer asks for the intercession of Jesus, Mary and Joseph to help our family grow in virtue, forgiveness and peace as we entrust our families to Their care.

1st Grade Winner with Foley Family Director, Dave Rich , DRE Dawn Dwyer and Foley Grand Knight Dominic Raona. Below: 1st grade poster.

You will notice on the altar the Icon of the Holy Family. This is one of many icons that the Knights of Columbus sends around the country to help bring Catholic families closer to the Holy Family. What do we think of when we think about the Holy Family? Of course, the Nativity is fresh in our minds with the Christmas Season in full swing. How about the flight to Egypt? When Joseph gets instruction from an angel in a dream to pick up his wife and newborn son and flee to a foreign land, he DOES it!! As fathers, we can surely relate to things we have had to do that are not always easy or fun. Being a father is not about being fun and accommodating. God calls us to be fathers for a reason; to lead the family, protect the family, set an example for the family and to be the one who makes sure that God is always present in our homes. We are called to be that man! Please feel free to pick up more information about the Consecration in the Gathering Space. These additional prayers and dedications are designed to help your family grow in spiritual union with the Holy Family. The beginning of the new year is a great time to begin a new family commitment. If you are not already doing so, why not take this opportunity to begin praying together as a family. Sharing this special Consecration and prayer is our Knights way of putting our Faith in Action. Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest and Advent Movie Night Foley Family Director Dave Rich chaired this year’s Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest. We reached out to the Kindergarten through 5th Grade Religious Education students to create a poster that helps us all to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. Our two winners each received a $25 Target Gift Card for their accomplishment. Dave and his wife Dianne also worked with the Education Commission to put on a great family event for the 3rd Week of Advent. About 30 kids of all ages came to church in their pajamas to work on some craft projects and watch a short animated movie about the Nativity. These family programs help strengthen the Knights of Columbus by putting our Faith in Action by encouraging others to understand and grow in their faith.

Winter: Adult Video/Discussion Program Seven Deadly Sins, Seven Lively Virtues Dcn. Tom of St. Kateri Parish is presenting Bishop Robert Barron’s DVD series The Seven Deadly Sins, Seven Lively Virtues followed by group discussion. Beginning Monday, January 7 through April 29 (9 total sessions), these 75minute sessions begin at 7pm at St. Kateri in “St. Martha’s Room.” Entrance is from the well-lighted back parking lot, all on one level with no steps. Bp. Robert Barron provides an engaging DVD presentation concerning the seven deadly sins, those great spiritual blocks that inhibit our flourishing in relationship with God and with one another. Based on Dante’s writings, the seven deadly sins correspond to the seven stories of Dante’s Mt. Purgatory. Pride, envy, anger, sloth, gluttony, avarice, and lust are all presented as patterns of dysfunction within us that lead to unhappiness. However, Bp/ Barron shows us how to counteract these seven sinful patterns through a conscious process of opposition, which are the “seven lively virtues.” The seven lively virtues offer antidotes to each sin and help set us on the right path to healing and happiness. While there is no fee for participating in these classes, the associated Student Workbook, which cost $15.00, is highly recommended. Please register and send check written out to St. Kateri Parish, 16101 Rotunda Drive, Dearborn, MI 48120, telephone: 313-3363227.
