Things Above from Fr. Bilot BLESSINGS OF ADVENT! Once again, we are given the wonderful opportunity to embrace this time of Advent, a time of preparation for the birth of Christ. The Catholic Church desires us to embrace the unfolding and mysterious events of the Incarnation - God becoming man. Just as we celebrate our birthday each year, and plan for the day, the Church hopes we will make a concerted effort to plan for the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. We believe that Jesus is alive, present with us at this moment in time through the power of the Holy Spirit. Knowing Jesus Christ is alive creates a desire to celebrate with Him on his special day. Because Jesus is alive and present to us, we need to have a great desire to get to know him more intimately. We become "best friends" with the Lord through our prayer and reflection (focusing on the prophecy of God becoming man, the angel Gabriel's announcement), his magnificent birth through the power of the Holy Spirit through our Blessed Mother, and the conditions in which he was born in time and space. All these aspects are holy moments of thought and reflection to help us know Jesus better and, thus, allow him to impact and influence our lives. If we take the secular approach, we can fill our time with all the exciting and glamorous events of Christmas time. As I have mentioned in the past, all the other parts of Christmas only make sense if we truly know the person we are celebrating. Last weekend, we offered two books for Advent reflection. I really encourage you to pick up the Advent book by Bishop Robert Barron (it is available in the Gathering Space). He has a Scripture reflection for each day, reflection questions, and a page or two for thoughts or notes. I believe this is a powerful way to prepare for Christmas and still have ample time for all the other activities. I promise that if you take this time prior to Christmas, the birthday of Christ will have a powerful transforming effect in your life. And, of course, take time now to go to Confession. I am telling you -- the Sacrament of Reconciliation is a great way to open our hearts to an inner honesty about who we are and who we want and need to be. The Sacrament restores sacredness to our soul and helps us to grasp the mysteries of the Lord's love and healing power. As an outward sign of our love, please be mindful of our annual food drive and Christmas gift collection for the parishes here in the Archdiocese on December 15-16. See this bulletin for more details. Also, if anyone desires to donate monies to help us purchase gifts for Divine Child families who need assistance this Christmas, please give us a call or drop off your donation at the Rectory Office. I am always very grateful for your generosity!

On a separate note, someone is leaving a flyer in our missalettes regarding the Holy Eucharist and the "sacrilege" of us "walking on Jesus." The flyer is fraught with theological and liturgical errors. If you see someone placing these flyers in our church, please let us know. (If need be, we will have to monitor the cameras to catch the person). If you come across one of these flyers, either give it to Fr. Matt or I or destroy it. The flyer is convincing and looks legitimate, but it is wrong. I do not appreciate someone thinking they are better than the Catholic Church and putting propaganda in our building. We must all be diligent in not allowing people to spread inaccurate information. Thank you for your help! Tonight (Sunday), we have our annual Community Advent Tree Lighting. Please see the article with all the exciting details in The Infant. We have expanded the event with more activities! Finally, Night Prayer begins at 8 p.m. in Church, immediately following the Tree Lighting. Look forward to seeing you there! Fr. Jim Bilot

Radically Mission Oriented Christmas The season of Advent is a season of anticipation and waiting for the coming of the newborn King, Jesus Christ. Our model for Advent is the Blessed Virgin Mary as she personifies this eager anticipation in the best possible way. She embodies the long waiting of the people of Israel for the coming Messiah with a spirit of readiness and obedience. While the history of the Israelites bounces from obedience to rebellion, in Mary, the best of God’s chosen people is put in full view. Mary’s anticipation is not just a general longing for the Messiah, but it is profoundly personal. She is expecting the birth of her son. The eagerness of waiting for the birth of a child is the same eagerness that we are meant to experience during this holy season. An eagerness that is personal because Jesus comes to save each one of us. In developing this theme of anticipation and waiting, Advent is a time of preparation for the coming of many visitors and friends leading up to Christmas. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, here at the parish, we will have an overflowing number of visitors and friends here for our Christmas Masses. With the initiative of the Archdiocese of Detroit, every parish is being invited to develop a radically mission oriented Christmas. We have been talking much about the work of Unleash the Gospel and our need to shift from maintaining the status quo to being entirely mission focused, which includes how we approach the Christmas Masses. Christmas is the time when we have the largest number of visitors to reach and help put them in contact with the life changing power of the Gospel. The call to evangelize everyone who comes to our parish must include a special outreach to those who visit for the Christmas season. The same call to evangelize must also include each one of us to accept it. The four pillars for developing a radically mission oriented Christmas are prayer, hospitality, kerygmatic preaching, and invitation. We will be discussing each of these pillars as we prepare for Christmas. With prayer, now is the time to begin to pray for any visitors that might come to our church for Christmas, to pray that they might be in a place to receive anew the message of the Gospel. With hospitality, we need to look inwards to reflect on how we might be more welcoming with “unusually gracious hospitality” during the Christmas Masses. With kerygmatic preaching, we need to present Jesus and the power of the Gospel in a way that might lead to a life-changing encounter. With invitation, we are looking to develop a “next step” for our visitors to keep the beautiful momentum of Christmas moving in their hearts. Fr. Matthew Hood
During the Season of Advent and in the spirit of Unleashing The Gospel, let us extend warm & gracious DC hospitality to all our visitors and guests that will be joining us this Christmas Season. Everyone who walks through our Church doors should feel welcomed. Let us really embrace the true meaning of Christmas this season and be a joyful missionary disciple to all our guests and let us all pray for our visitors that they leave with peace and joy in their hearts.
Dear Lord, As we prepare for your coming, let us reflect on the Journey Mary and Joseph took on their way to Bethlehem. They were tired and alone, and there was no room for them at the inn. Help us to open the doors of our hearts and our parish as we welcome guests this Christmas. We pray that those who come will feel welcomed and experience your great love and peace through each of us. Help us to see with your eyes, serve with your hands, and to embrace those who will come into our midst. Amen.

Lord, our God, we praise You for Your Son, Jesus Christ, for He is Emmanuel, the Hope of all people. He is the Wisdom that teaches and guides us. He is the Savior of us all. O Lord, let your blessing come upon us as we light the first (purple) candle of this wreath. May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ's promise of salvation. May He come quickly and not delay. We ask this in His holy name. Amen. REFLECT Today we begin the journey of Advent, a time of hope and anticipation of the coming of the Lord at Christmas, but also for Christ's second coming. Take time to reflect how you will prepare spiritually for Christmas this year.

St. Vincent de Paul Symbolism of the Christmas Tree The SVdP Tree of Lights at Sacred Heart Church will be strung with lights shortly, on Saturday, December 8, with a planned gathering of Vincentians to view the tree lighting, and a luncheon to make the tradition a time of special fellowship. Making special memories and living in the “present” is definitely a benefit of a beautiful advent season. So what is the symbolism that surrounds the Christmas Tree, and secondly, why is it so important? Christians used evergreens as a sign of everlasting life with God. Secondly, Christians regarded the Christmas tree as a symbol of hope. Even before Christ’s birth, trees that stayed green all year long carried special meaning for people. A green, thriving tree in the dead of winter reminded people of hope as well as a new life. Because of Jesus Christ, we can have everlasting life (3 Nephi 5:13) so we can choose to see the evergreen tree as a natural symbol of Him and His gift to us. Interestingly, in the Bible, God compares himself to a tree. He says, “I am like a green pine tree; your fruitfulness comes from me.” (Hosea 14:8b). This is a relevant analogy to consider during the Christmas season. The fruitful lives of Christians can serve as the “ornaments” that draw others to admire the “tree” – God himself. In essence, if we look at the Christmas Tree in the right way, we can clearly reflect and remember Jesus Christ in our Christmas celebrations as Christians have done for centuries. Please remember our SVdP tree (see page 15), this advent, or the poor box in the back of church. Warm advent blessings to you all and thank you for your compassion for the poor. ~ Mindy Delano

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
First Week of Advent = New Liturgical Year With the advent of Advent we have the chance for new beginnings. It has been over a year since the council has sponsored the Building Domestic Church Kiosk in the gathering room of the church. If you haven’t had an opportunity to check it out, now is the perfect opportunity.
The Family Fully Alive booklet is a great way to start the
liturgical year with an Advent commitment to prayer life for the family. I have referenced the book from time to time. The book is broke up into months and helps to focus our prayer life with themes. There is a different theme for every month. The book starts with the month of December.
To start the year and Advent the theme for December is “Joy”. Joy is an attribute of God’s divine love. We are called to be joyful by developing a relationship with Christ. As we begin preparing for Christmas, we need to avoid the temptation to hurry through the preparation process. Remember the “unexpected guest”? If we can prepare for the coming of our Lord with joy, then we can embrace Advent more in the spirit we are called to discern. To welcome the unexpected guest with open arms and warm feelings as opposed to hesitancy, animosity and preoccupation. Joy should be part of the regular fabric of Christian life. Are we able to allow ourselves to be joyful when we are struggling over gift lists, anticipating the next sale or fighting crowds for the latest doorbuster? Try to embrace Advent with patience, joy and charity. It will help usher in Christmas for a true meaning of the incarnation of our God. Speaking of NEW, three new members joined our Foley Council at our November meeting. Brothers Larry Laliberte and Bob Sadler requested and were granted a transfer and Giorgio Bertucci was the lone man who became a third degree knight at the November 11th Major Degree. A hearty welcome goes out to these new members. *** FOLEY MEMBERS - BE SURE TO RSVP TO UPCOMING DECEMBER EVENTS **** Are you a Catholic man who would like to join our council? Our next major degree will not be until February 17th! This will give you the opportunity to learn on your own about the works of the Knights of Columbus. I encourage you to visit www.KofC.org to explore all the programs and benefits that being a Knight offers. There are many videos of knights working together to do good as well as testimonials of men whose lives have been changed. After you visit the website, call our Membership Director Steve Lentz at 313-949-5162 DO NOT SIGN UP TO BE A KNIGHT ONLINE! We can answer your questions in a council-specific way, so you have a better idea how our council fits with the Supreme plan. You can always talk to any Foley Knight about joining our council.

Archdiocesan News
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We are excited to announce the launch of our first podcast, Open Door Policy. Open Door Policy is hosted by our own Fr. Steve Pullis, Director of Evangelization, Catechesis, and Schools, and St. Augustine & St. Monica parishioner Danielle Center. Season 1 of Open Door Policy will feature six episodes in which Fr. Steve and Danielle interview fellow joyful missionary disciples from around the archdiocese to learn more about their work as they strive to unleash the Gospel in southeast Michigan. During the show, guests share their personal testimonies, their stories of encountering Jesus Christ and their decisions to follow Him. They also talk about the pastoral letter Unleash the Gospel. The name of the podcast, Open Door Policy, is a tribute to Blessed Solanus Casey, God's doorkeeper, and reflects God's call for the Archdiocese to be mission-focused and to go out and share the Gospel – the most radical, beautiful and lifechanging message of all time. You can download the Open Door Policy on Apple Podcast, Spotify, or Google Podcasts. Additionally for those interested in further reflecting on Archbishop Vigneron's Unleash the Gospel pastoral letter, a new audio version is available for streaming or download on Soundcloud. It will soon be available in Amazon and Apple audiobooks and on Audible. Thank you again for all you do and please know of our continued prayers for you. In Christ, Edmundo Reyes Director of Communications UNLEASH THE GOSPEL
Unleash the Gospel
utgchallenge.com Last month, hundreds of missionaries in parishes across the Detroit Archdiocese encouraged parishioners to take the six-day “Unleash the Gospel Challenge.” Inspired by Archbishop Vigneron’s pastoral letter, the challenge asks Catholics to devote five minutes per day to learn and pray about what it means to be a Church on a mission filled with joyful, missionary disciples. Your CSA gifts support innovative, new communications in the Archdiocese. You can join this movement at any time at utchallenge.com. Each morning, you will receive an email with a twominute video and a three-minute reflection, presenting an opportunity to learn more about the action of God in our region and the role you have in this great mission. For more information about CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, go to aod.org.

Community News Cell Phone vs Bible
I wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phones? What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets? What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it? What if we flipped through it several times a day? What if we used it to receive messages from the text? What if we treated it like we couldn’t live without it? What if we gave it to kids as gifts? What if we used it as we traveled? What if we used it in case of an emergency? This is something to make you go...hmmm...where is my Bible? Oh, and one more thing. Unlike our cell phone, we don’t ever have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill!
