Things Above from Fr. Bilot As we embrace this third week of Advent, the Church exclaims, "Gaudete" - to rejoice. Why rejoice? Because our Savior, Jesus Christ, is near at hand. Christmas, the celebration of Jesus' birth, is a little over a week away! As faithful Catholics who walk through the doors of the Church each week, we are blessed to listen to God speak to us through the Scriptures, to encounter Jesus in the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist, and to have the opportunity to freely worship with other members of the parish, allowing us to grow deeper in our relationship with Jesus. We truly are blessed and humbled to believe that encountering the Lord at Mass is "shining" our souls and helping us to be more like Jesus in our daily lives. And, how we wish we were better disciples of Jesus. The beauty that is Jesus understands our human frailty. If we continue to try, especially in receiving the Sacraments with purity, praying daily and following the Commandments, even when we fall, God will bless our faithfulness by making us holy! As we rejoice in the beauty of this Advent time, soon to encounter the baby Jesus in the manger, we have much to do in the next week. Oh, I am not talking about shopping, baking, cooking, wrapping and decorating, though these are exciting and beautiful elements of celebrating Jesus' birth. We have two big tasks ahead of us. First, how are we doing in making time to encounter Jesus in our daily lives? Are we taking time for prayer? Are we preparing our hearts by going to Confession? Are we taking time to read the Gospel reflecting on Mary and Joseph's journey and the birth of Jesus in a manger? I am praying that you and I are growing more excited about Christ's love for us. And, in this coming week, are we ready to witness being in love with the Lord and willing to share the love with those who have lost their way? While we are in conversation with family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and, yes, even the stranger, I would like you to ask them what they are doing to celebrate Christmas. Specifically, I want you to listen. If they do not say they are attending Mass, I want you to invite them. Give them the business cards we had printed with our Mass times. Carry the cards in your purse, wallet, pocket or with your phone. Just hand them the card and say, “I would love if you would come and celebrate with us! We need to get Christ back into people's celebration of Christmas. Remember, Christmas means, "Mass of Christ." If we believe in the power of Jesus Christ and his presence in our lives, then we need to be bold enough, like Mary and Joseph, and do what God wants us to do: invite people to encounter the baby Jesus, our Savior. What is the worst that could happen? No matter the outcome, our inviting others to Mass will bring glory and honor to God!

Page 33 Page

Secondly, on Christmas, we will be excited to rejoice. Our spirits might be dampened, however, when our "pew" is being occupied by a "stranger." It is up to us to smile, slide in next to them or find another pew. In Unleash the Gospel, Archbishop Vigneron's Pastoral Letter exhorts us to show "unusually gracious hospitality." If we are hospitable and welcoming, then hopefully, they will feel that they were meant to be here. Our ultimate prayer and hope is that they will return to the Church or perhaps become Catholic. It is up to you and me to make the change. The culture isn't going to listen. People aren't listening to the Lord. But we are, and we must act. So, please take this week to be gutsy and ask people what they are doing for Christmas. Invite them to our church or one in their area. There is an Archdiocesan website, massfinder.org, that lists all the Catholic Churches and their Mass schedules. My brothers and sisters, it is a time to rejoice! We are going to change the world by inviting people and welcoming people into the Catholic Church for Christmas: the Mass of Christ. In courage and hopefulness, we rejoice! Fr. Jim Bilot

The Rectory Office will be closing at noon on Thursday, December 20 and reopen on Friday, December 21 at 9am.

The Invitation “What are your plans for Christmas?” I am sure for most of us that will be the big question of conversation as we get together with neighbors, co-workers, friends and family leading up to Christmas. When this question comes up, make sure to mention your plan to make Christmas Mass part of your own celebration. An essential part of our goal of having a radically mission-oriented Christmas is for each of us to invite those that we know or encounter over the next few days to join us for Christmas Mass. We can remind everyone that the name Christmas comes from “Christ-Mass,” the special Mass of the year when we celebrate the incarnation of Jesus Christ. We are asking every parishioner to invite at least three people to Christmas Mass. Here are some helpful rules provided by the Archdiocese of Detroit: 5 Simple INVITATION Rules 1. 2. 3.

4. 5.

Pray for those you will meet on Christmas Make a personal connection – a direct invitation Give him a reason to attend A. It will be fun B. It will be interesting C. It answers the questions a lot of people have It is an invitation to become part of a community: “I would love for you to join me/us at Divine Child.” Hand them a reminder (card, bulletin) or get in contact and follow up (text, email, social media, phone call).

After Mass today, we have invitation cards available for you to hand out to invite people to join us for Mass on Christmas. If you are reading this at home, stop by the office to pick up some invitation cards during the week. Personal invitations are powerful. Your invitation could be what someone is waiting for to help them encounter the Lord this Christmas. Fr. Matthew Hood

Prayer For Christmas Guests Dear Lord, As we prepare for your coming, let us reflect on the Journey Mary and Joseph took on their way to Bethlehem. They were tired and alone, and there was no room for them at the inn. Help us to open the doors of our hearts and our parish as we welcome guests this Christmas.

We pray that those who come will feel welcomed and experience your great love and peace through each of us. Help us to see with your eyes, serve with your hands, and to embrace those who will come into our midst. Amen.

Victory for Victor! Hello, We are the Wisniewski family. Mark, Belinda and our children Sophia, Leona, and Victor. For those of you that don’t know, back in late May our son Victor, then 9, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Since diagnosis Victor has gone through a series of chemotherapy treatments, scans, blood draws, tests and hospital stays. As of his last scans in October we are overjoyed to report that Victor, now 10, is cancer free. He will continue to have testing and scans monthly but is now trying to return to the normal life of a 4th grader. We are humbled and awed at the response of this, our Divine Child Church and School community. You have stepped up and offered the kindest of words and intentions in many forms. A conversation, a card, many meals, gift cards, donations, gifts for Victor, and transportation and companionship for the girls when we were with Victor. Some even made hospital visits and assisted with some of his medical procedures. Most of all you offered all your prayers and support. Whatever role you played we cannot express our gratitude enough. At the most trying time in our lives, when everything seemed dark, this community lifted us up and in many ways restored a sense of humanity and compassion in a world that many times seems to lack these qualities. You truly exemplified the teachings of our Christ. We cannot thank you enough and pray for good health for you and your loved ones. Without your kindness and support we don’t know how we would have gotten through this. It helped immensely to know you were behind us.

Please know that you are all in our prayers and we will NEVER forget. May God bless each and every one of you! Love, The Wisniewski Family

Busyness. It’s an epidemic of sorts. Busy schedules can quickly consume us and leave us feeling burned out and empty. With so many things competing for our attention, sometimes it’s hard to give time to God. Yet, when we put God first in our lives, life becomes more ordered and we are clearer about how to spend our time. God wants to unburden us and fill us with His peace. If you’d like to reconnect with God or deepen your faith, we are here to help! Whether you want to grow spiritually, have questions about the Catholic faith, desire to return to the Church, or just need someone to talk to, our faith community welcomes you and we’d love to connect with you.

St. Vincent de Paul

In early years, the star became the traditional tree topper. Its symbolism, of course, is related to the birth of Jesus Christ, an awesome story which bears repeating as we hold this event near and dear to our hearts. One wintry evening, a special new star took its place among the ordinary stars in the sky. It was considered special for a number of reasons. The new star was easily identified because of its great radiance. It shone upon the gray hills and made them light as day. The shepherds observed it and became frightened, but an angel appeared to them and said, “Do not be afraid; the star has come to bring you good tidings of great joy, and to show you the place where a little babe is born, a little babe whose name is Jesus, and who will give peace and joy to the whole world.” When the angels had gone back to Heaven, the shepherds said, “Let us go and see this child.” So they left their flocks sleeping, took their “crooks” in their hands, and followed the star. It led them to the little stable in Bethlehem where Baby Jesus was cradled in a manger. Then, the star moved on to the location of the good, wise men. They, too, observed the bright light, and its motion of moving on and on, as if showing them the way to go. So, they, too, followed the star till it rested above the birthplace of Jesus. The star watched over them, casting a peaceful light over all. At dawn, the star returned to Heaven, to tell the other stars the story of the “Christmas” day. The Christmas star symbolizes high hopes and high ideals—hope for good fortune, and more, importantly, the hope for reaching above oneself. In this beautiful advent season, please “reach above oneself” and support the SVdP Tree of Lights. You can place your offering with the form into an envelope marked “tree of lights” into the collection basket. The form requests $10 for each name of loved one, living or deceased, and your name, address, and whether you want an ornament. Together, we can make a difference. God Bless. ~ Mindy Delano

GAUDETE SUNDAY…we’re almost there! The Family Fully Alive booklet in the Building Domestic Church Kiosk appropriately assigns the month of December the theme of JOY! During this season of anticipation, Gaudete Sunday is the 3rd Sunday of Advent when we celebrate that the semipenitential season is more than half over. Are you ready for Christmas? Not the presents and parties, but the Incarnation of our Lord and the meaning of a God who so loved us that he became Man to experience human love, joy, trust, sadness, fear, anger and betrayal. The readings and psalm this week exude JOY. The first three lines in Zephaniah’s first reading are “Shout for joy…Sing joyfully…Be glad and exult with all your heart.” The psalm calls us to “Cry out with joy and gladness” and St. Paul himself tells us to “Rejoice, in the Lord always.” So we ask ourselves, what is there to be so happy about? In this hustle and bustle world we live in where we see people tear each other apart with words and deed, what is it that we should find solace in? In Luke’s Gospel we learn what is important. The people are filled with expectation, searching for answers and looking for hope look to John the Baptist as their redeemer. John answers them, “I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” He gives them something to hang onto – something that will change their lives. What do we take from this? These people two thousand years ago did not yet know of Jesus. They did not yet know of His crucifixion, resurrection and the redemption He would bring. But yet they were told by John the Baptist to wait! Each year the Church gives us the season of Advent to remind us, that we are called to WAIT and PREPARE as the people two thousand years ago were asked to do. But today, we have the advantage of knowing Jesus as God and the sacrifice He made for us. We have a responsibility to answer the call that God asks of us, because we know that the reward is much greater than a wrapped present under a Christmas tree.
