watch a video and reflect on it. The intent is to help us understand the "movement" of Unleash the Gospel. Think Things Above from Fr. We wil be asked to take out our cell phones and key in a code to start the five-minute, hopeful y exciting, challenge to renew the face of the Catholic Church here in the Archdiocese of Detroit. Also, in our desire to help our young adult parishioners as they transition into adulthood, it is important that they register at the parish independent of their parents. Why? So these

Churchof ofthe theDivine Divine Child, Child, Dearborn, Church Dearborn,Michigan Michigan

This weekend, in most of the parishes in the Archdiocese of Detroit, parish representatives will be speaking briefly at each Mass to help all of us Catholics move forward in our relationship with the Lord Jesus and build a culture of Catholicism here in southeast Michigan. Over the past year, Fr. Matt has devoted much of his weekly column to examining the Archdiocesan Synod pastoral letter, "Unleash the Gospel." In 2016, representatives from all over the diocese came together to discern, pray and give input as to how Catholics can share the Good News of the Gospel. It is the hope of the Archbishop and the Synod members that our parishes can become more "mission-focused." The result of the Synod was summarized in a pastoral letter, "Unleash the Gospel." I hope you have taken the time to read Fr. Matt's columns to glean a deeper understanding of the pastoral letter and how we can implement it in our parish and in our lives. The next step is to help each of us become "joyful missionary disciples." In order to help us accomplish this directive, we are invited to delve into a six-day challenge. For five minutes each day for the next six days, we are asked to watch a video and reflect on it. The intent is to help us understand the "movement" of Unleash the Gospel. Think about it: what would the potential impact be on our culture, our parishes, our families and our own faith journey if all the Catholics in the Archdiocese embarked on the same journey? We will be asked to take out our cell phones and key in a code to start the five-minute, hopefully exciting, challenge to renew the face of the Catholic Church here in the Archdiocese of Detroit. With so much negativity and evil present towards the Church these days, in particular with the clergy sex abuse scandal, we need hope, reassurance and direction in how to live and move about as proud and humble Catholics! Also, in our desire to help our young adult parishioners as they transition into adulthood, it is important that they register at the parish independent of their parents. Why? So these young adults can establish themselves as part of the parish community on their own, and it helps me to recognize their participation as an active member living out their faith. The importance is several fold. First, my concern for our young people’s spiritual well-being. Society and our culture are not kind to religion, faith and, especially, our eternal salvation with the Lord. Secondly, as an adult, your friends, family or relatives, who see you as a Catholic role model will ask you to be a Godparent for the Sacrament of Baptism, or a sponsor for the Sacrament of Confirmation, or you may want to be married in the Catholic Church. (For instance, the bride may be from parish X in Chicago and you live here. The parish where the Sacrament of Marriage will take place is going to ask me if the groom [in this example] is a registered, active member of the parish and practicing his faith.) If I do

Page 33 Page

not have a record of the young adult on file independently, then I cannot, in honesty, say yes, they are active. Having clear records makes it easy to fill out the proper paperwork. Thirdly, by registering, it is my hope that the young adult will take an active role in the vitality of the parish. Through your prayer, and sharing your time and talent, you can help the community become stronger and more vibrant. Everyone needs to be involved in order to sustain our vitality. As we embrace this month of November, please remember to take this month as an opportunity to pray for the deceased. We pray for their eternal life with the Lord and, with our prayer, we can recall the beauty of our relationship with them and how they are now enveloped into the mystery of God. In gratitude, Fr. Jim Bilot

ROSARY RALLY

Saturday, November 10 12:00 noon Divine Child Marian Shrine

Mercy in Action 2018 was a success! Twenty students, two young adults and four adults volunteered at Vista Maria in Dearborn Heights on Saturday October 20th. An outdoor crew worked on general outdoor cleanup and an indoor crew worked in their “boutique” helping sort and inventory donations. We also made individual Halloween treat bags for the 146 teenage girls who currently reside at Vista Maria. Vista Maria treated us to a generous lunch, after which we labeled 2,000 bars of soap with the hotline phone number and message for victims of human trafficking as part of the S.O.A.P. initiative. (see photo below)

(in front of the high school)

Please join us as we all come together and pray the Rosary in public to honor Mary, our Blessed Mother. Rain or shine!

St. Vincent de Paul

St. Charles Borromeo Today is the Feast Day of Saint Charles Borromeo, who was born in northern Italy in 1538 to a prominent and wealthy family. Trained in civil and canon law, he was rather young to be able to assume the role of secretary of state at the Vatican, upon the direction of his uncle, Pope Pius IV, and later Archbishop. He led the way for correcting the 16th century church, supervised the writing of an accurate catechism, re-wrote liturgical texts and music, while working in Milan and Rome. Among his varied interests, he especially felt children should learn young when it came to the teaching of religion. Consequently, he established the Confraternities of Christian Doctrine to teach religion to children, which proved highly successful with 740 schools, 3,000 catechists, and forty thousand students in Sunday schools. Despite being conservative in nature, many of his followers loved him. He saw suffering and death with the plague in 1576, so he cared for the sick, clothed the poor, sold his land holdings to feed 60,000 poor people, prayed with people, and still had time to establish hospitals, colleges, orphanages, and other charitable institutions. Saint Charles is the patron saint of catechists and stands as a role model in making a difference in our world. St. Charles “reminds us that the rules must be the same for all, and that we will not succeed if we make exceptions and play favorites.” Please keep the poor in your prayers and remember the poor box located in the back wall of the church. Although our SVdP conference is small, we feel deeply that we perform a vital and valuable service to our “needy” neighbors. Without a doubt, St. Charles would approve of our efforts. ~Mindy Delano

REMEMBERING THOSE WHO SERVED Thank a Vet! A few weeks ago, I wrote about the 6 new Sir Knights from Foley Council who entered into the 4th Degree. Remember, that 4th Degree Knights must first complete their 1st, 2nd and 3rd Degree, so not all brother Knights are Sir Knights in the Patriotic 4th Degree! Bishop Foley Council 2660 proudly has 14 Sir Knights who belong to the Monsignor Schulte Assembly. Many different councils feed into the Monsignor Schulte Assembly which proudly represents the 4th Degree Knights in the Dearborn area. The Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus was established on February 22, 1900, on the principle of patriotism — love for and devotion to one’s country — and Fourth Degree Knights focus the majority of their activities on this principle. The Fourth Degree is an important part of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic, family, fraternal, service organization. For most men who follow Jesus, there comes a time when duty extends beyond our own lives, beyond how we lead our families, and into how we serve our fellow man. That's what the Knights of Columbus is all about. The Patriotic Degree allows KofC members to take this one step further. As we come upon Veterans’ Day we remember proudly, but with a sense of somberness those men and women who bravely answered our country’s call to fight for our freedom or others around the world. Some of those brave men and women made the greatest sacrifice and others came home from war alive but severely scarred physically, emotionally or traumatized. Veterans surround us in our daily world, we oftentimes forget to acknowledge their sacrifice – so if you see a vet who proudly wears a pin or a hat indicating their service, we should thank them. This year, the Monsignor Schulte Assembly is again sponsoring the “Wreaths Across America” program. This program allows individuals and groups to purchase a wreath online and have it placed on a veteran’s grave. The Sir Knights of Msgr. Schulte will conduct a ceremony at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 15th at St. Hedwig Cemetery. Veterans’ names will be read as the donated wreaths are being laid on their grave. Last year, over 60 DCHS students helped with the laying of wreaths and senior Katy LeWalk (now Westpoint Cadet Katy LeWalk) addressed the crowd with a patriotic speech. Please see the corresponding information or check the book rack in the gathering room and consider helping the Knights by purchasing a wreath to decorate a veteran’s grave. You do not need to be present, but if you are willing to help out, you can contact Msgr. Schulte PFN Bob Mincel at 313-5985332. What better way to honor a veteran? This is the last chance to join our great council before the end of the year! On Sunday, November 11th some men who are interested in joining our council will be attending a Major Degree (this is your chance to join the KofC fraternity of Catholic men) at St. Collette Church in Livonia. This will be the last opportunity before the end of the year to join our council. This is only a couple of weeks away, so please contact us so we can get the paperwork moving. There will be more opportunities after the Christmas Holidays, but why put it off? Become a Foley Knight soon – you don’t know what you are missing! Call our Membership Director Steve Lentz at 313-949-5162. We hope to hear from you soon!

The Issues, The Candidates, and Your Vote 2018! Themes of Catholic Social Teaching The themes of Catholic Social Teaching can be helpful in forming one’s conscience and preparing for voting. Within each principle, it is appropriate to reflect upon the role and level of government that should be involved in a given issue, as well as the personal responsibility Catholics have to uphold these teachings in their individual lives.

Call to Family, Community, and Participation: The institution of the family, based on marriage between one man and one woman, is the key building block in society. The Right to Life and the Dignity of the Human Person: Every human person has inherent value, from conception to natural death. The protection of this value should be a crucial priority in society. All institutions should be evaluated by the way they threaten or enhance human life. Rights & Responsibilities: Every person has the right to basic necessities: life, food, shelter, medical care, and religious freedom. Option for the Poor and Vulnerable: How the most vulnerable are treated should be the basic moral test of any society, as their suffering is the suffering of the whole community. Dignity of Workers and Rights of Workers: Work promotes and helps to protect the inherent dignity of each individual. It is a way to participate in the world God has created and to grow as a person in community with others. As such, the economy should put people first, and society should protect the rights of workers. Solidarity: Each person is part of the larger human family, despite differences in race, ethnicity, income, or ideology. Jesus taught that all are called to love their neighbor as themselves. Individuals and communities can practice solidarity by seeking justice and promoting peace in the midst of conflict. Caring for God’s Creation: God created the Earth, as well as the people, animals, and plants that live upon it. As a result, all Catholics are called to be good stewards of creation and the gifts it provides, protecting human beings and the larger planet.
