Things Above from Fr. Bilot I pray that everyone had a blessed Thanksgiving. I enjoy this holiday because there is no commercial hype to the celebration. It is a time for reflection and gratitude for living in a country filled with immense beauty and goodness. Unfortunately, the "Black Friday" stigma has crept into Thanksgiving and is trying to destroy yet another

national holiday. I believe that as Catholic Christians, we need to be vigilant that we do not let secularism destroy the legacy of the holiday celebrating the Pilgrims coming to America and establishing a land where freedom of religion could be expressed freely and safely. I hope you had an opportunity to take some quiet time and reflect on the beauty of our country, our lives, and all that the Lord has given to us through His bounty. Next Sunday, December 2, we will begin the holy time of Advent. Advent prepares us to celebrate the gift of the Incarnation -- the birth of God made man, Jesus Christ. I so want us to be properly focused. I enjoy decorating the Rectory, decorating a real tree, eating delicious homemade Christmas cookies and attending parties. Even further, I feel grateful and humbled to have my Catholic faith and share it with you when we come to Church during Advent and then on the Solemnity of Christmas. I am excited to see everyone dressing up for the Lord and excited to attend Mass to celebrate Jesus' birth. However, the excitement and awe will only be felt if we prepare properly. Here are some of the ways we are preparing here at Divine Child, and I want you to be a part of all the experiences. At the Masses this weekend, you may pick up the Advent Blue Book, containing fun facts along with spiritual reflections to prepare us for Christmas. In addition, we will have a journal book by Bishop Robert Barron. The Gospel of the day is presented to us, along with reflection questions for us to journal, help us focus, and move us toward the manger in Bethlehem. The 2019 Calendars and oplatki (Christmas wafers) will be available this weekend as well. On Monday, November 26, at 1:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m., in the Gathering Space, we are hosting a segment from Bishop Barron's Catholicism series. It will be the first episode which focuses on Jesus Christ. Showing the video at the beginning of our preparation will help us delve deeper into the mystery of Christ's birth. Please join us! The presentation lasts about an hour. These opportunities are presented prior to the First Sunday of Advent so we have a great framework from which to work. Please join us next Sunday evening, December 2, for our annual Advent Tree Lighting celebration! We have extended the program with more activities, additional music and singing and, of course, refreshments and the

opportunity to chat with St. Nicholas! We will close the evening with Night Prayer at 8:00 p.m. in Church, so the evening will end at approximately 8:15 p.m. Please mark your calendars and come out to celebrate the time of Advent. In Thanksgiving, Fr. Jim Bilot

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Almighty ever-living God, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the King of the universe, grant, we pray, that the whole creation, set free from slavery, may render your majesty service and ceaselessly proclaim your praise. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

The Memorare REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. Photo courtesy of Fr. Jim Bilot

Unleash the Gospel Conclusion Since arriving at the parish well over a year ago, my reflections here in the bulletin have been focused on Unleash the Gospel. However, now, I have made it to the end of the document which is providential in God’s timing that it coordinates with the initiation of this movement to Unleash the Gospel through the challenge that we were all invited to participate in. In watching the videos, it is my hope that each of you might come to a deeper understanding of the basics of what this movement is all about. While the videos were simple cartoons, they serve a greater purpose of communicating a profound reality in a short and digestible format. So far, I have not heard a lot of feedback yet, as I assume some of you are still working through the videos. The feedback that I have received so far has varied from overwhelmingly positive to somewhat skeptical. One thing that gives me a great cause for hope is that we are clear, as an Archdiocese and parish, that our first mission is to evangelize by sharing the life-saving message of the Gospel. In the end, there is no other option than to take up this mission and accept this invitation. At the end of the document, the Archbishop reflects on the recent news of the beatification of Fr. Solanus Casey: Where will the Archdiocese of Detroit be in twenty years? My hope is that it will be a community of joyful missionary disciples and of saints united in Jesus—that there will even be a whole host of causes for beatification!—and that southeast Michigan will be a place of the manifest presence of God. We are a local Church in movement, and I invite every member of the Church to join in as we follow where Christ leads. Not only the destination but the journey itself is reason for encouragement and joy in the transformative power of the Gospel. As Father Solanus always said, we thank God ahead of time for what He is doing for us. My prayer now is that all of you may bring this all before the feet of Jesus in prayer. Bring Him your fears, your weakness and your sins. Ask Him to make you new and to give you the courage and boldness to answer this invitation to unleash the Gospel! Fr. Matthew Hood The text of the letter can be found online at the site UnleashTheGospel.org. (Section 6 of Unleash the Gospel)

Alumni News

Father Ken Ken Congratulates Congratulates New Father NewChairman Chairman The Sacred Heart-Divine Child SVdP Spiritual Advisor, Father Ken Chase, congratulates Vincentian, Carolyn Lynett, who volunteered to assume the role as Chairman of the annual SVdP Tree of Lights project. The Tree of Lights, located on the grounds behind the Sacred Heart Church, has been a tradition for many years. Carolyn expressed her desire in moving the Conference forward, and because of the joint SVdP Conference existing between the two parishes, she has announced that the Tree of Lights, in all its symbolism, really belongs to both parishes. “We warmly welcome Divine Child’s parishioners to participate in this project,” Carolyn announced with excitement. President Pamela Szpytman, is delighted how the Tree of Lights evolved to become all-inclusive. “As a Divine Child parishioner, I never knew the SVdP even had a Tree of Lights, and I am so impressed about this Advent project…and for the first time, Divine Child has an opportunity to support this awesome tradition! I absolutely love Carolyn’s perspective on this project. Tree of Lights is a “win-win project,” both in recognizing our loved ones, and secondly, helping our neighbors in need. Vincentians are already volunteering to assist Carolyn in her “toy shop” in making the ornaments!” The St. Vincent de Paul Conference wishes to express our appreciation to the participants of this Advent project. In this season of perpetual hope, we wish you peace, love, and joy throughout this beautiful Advent season.

CHRIST THE KING! FIGHTING SECULARISM AND PROTECTING RELIGIOUS LIBERTIES! Today we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. The feast is a Solemnity of the Church and celebrated the last weekend of the liturgical year. Yes, next week we begin a new Church Year with the season of Advent. As we close out the old liturgical year, the Church gives us a gentle reminder that Jesus Christ is King. It is by His suffering and dying on the cross that gives us our redemption and our hope. In 1925, Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King. The pope recognized that nationalism and secularism were growing around the world; this compounded with other societal changes would surely advance hostility against the Church. It was after WWI when Russia had fallen to atheist communism and monarchies were falling like Dominos all over Europe. The feast was meant to remind us that as governments and philosophies come and go, Christ reigns supreme as King of the Universe forever. Nearly one hundred years later, we witness aggressive secularist campaigns and even scandals within the Church herself that threaten the Church and other religious institutions. Over 72 million people in the United States identify themselves as Catholics and yet we see less and less people at Mass. It is so easy to become consumed by “life.” Our minds become preoccupied with busy schedules and our incessant need to acquire. It is no surprise that we make excuse after excuse why not to attend Mass on the weekend, spend time in Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament or even receive God’s graces in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We need to do a better job of fighting the secular intrusion into our spiritual life; certainly we can find a compromise, but our spiritual fulfillment must always win. The Knights of Columbus are called to defend religious liberty against cultural trends that are increasingly hostile to Catholicism and Christianity as a whole. As the Second Vatican Council noted, although we must respect the just autonomy of the secular sphere, we must take into consideration the truth that there is no realm of worldly affairs that can be separated from God. St. John Paul II witnessed that when a society attempts to close the door to religion, it inevitably falls prey to a totalitarian reading of the human person that recognizes only the state as the ultimate arbiter of right and wrong. As Knights, it is our duty to resist militant secularism and to defend religious liberty at the international, national, state, and local levels. Without this necessary check on the power of the state, no principled limit can be recognized to prevent the expansion of government’s power at the expense of personal liberty. (KofC.org)

The Knights of Columbus is an international brotherhood that fights for religious freedom around the world. In 2014, the Knights of Columbus established the Christian Refugee Relief Fund. Since then we have collected more than $18 million. As of the end of 2017, over $16 million has already been distributed to provide food, clothing, shelter, education and medical care to persecuted Christians in the Middle East. (kofc.org/ChristiansAtRisk)

If people in other parts of the world are literally dying to attend Mass, surely we here in America should gladly attend Mass and receive our Lord, our King and our Savior in the Eucharist…and why not invite one of the 72 million Catholics to join you? Are you a Catholic man who would like to join our council! Our next major degree will not be until February 17! This will give you the opportunity to learn on your own about the works of the Knights of Columbus. I encourage you to visit www.KofC.org to explore all the programs and benefits that being a Knight offers. There are many videos of Knights working together to do good, as well as testimonials of men whose lives have been changed. After you visit the website, call our Membership Director Steve Lentz at 313-949-5162 - DO NOT SIGN UP TO BE A KNIGHT ONLINE! We can answer your questions in a council-specific way, so you have a better idea how our council fits with the Supreme plan. You can always talk to any Foley Knight about joining our council.

Stewardship: Turning Cultural Values Upside Down

Many Catholics wince when they hear the word stewardship. It's a reaction prompted by a mistaken notion that stewardship is just another way the Church asks for money. This is not true.

The Life of a Christian Steward

The decision to share one's financial resources with one's communion of faith is an important aspect of being a Christian steward. But that is only part of the story. Christian stewardship is the commitment made in response to God's generosity: to live a life of gratitude; to make daily decisions to glorify God; and to share oneself and one's gifts generously as circumstances and talents allow. A life of gratitude is the first mark of a Christian steward. God has endowed His followers with more gifts than they can imagine- life and faith, time and relationships, health, talents, skills and material wealth. Everything one has is a gift from God, and a Christian thanks God daily for these blessings.
