Things Above from Fr. Bilot In October, the Catholic Church focuses on respect for life. Respect Life month gives us an opportunity to focus on being messengers of God's love to a culture which is desperately in need of encountering Him. By our helping others understand the great dignity of the human person, be it in the womb or at the end stages of life, we bring people into an encounter with Christ. If we look at the life of Jesus Christ and his Mission, to proclaim the Kingdom of God, he supported the dignity of every person, saint or sinner; Jesus loved everyone. We do not have the right to discriminate based on mental, intellectual or physical abilities. Jesus didn't discriminate. He embraced all people, seeing in their existence, the image and likeness of God. During the month of October, we are challenged to look at issues such as abortion, contraception, mental and physical disabilities, geriatrics, human trafficking, child abuse, and assisted suicide through the eyes of Jesus Christ. We are challenged to ask ourselves: How would Jesus deal with these issues? What would He say to our reasoning of engaging in moral imperatives that could end the life of someone who God created in His image and likeness? Or engaging in behaviors that stop the creating power of God in our lives and in the lives of those we do not even know. I ask that you take time each day to pray to our Blessed Mother for her intercession in helping us and others to see the beauty, wonder and awe in the gift of life at all stages. May we see that every life is cherished, chosen and sent to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ! I also want to give you an update on security here on campus. To start, please know that we have not had any serious issues on campus. I always ask St. Michael the Archangel to look over us. Because of the extraordinary amount of activities that occur on campus every day (our schools have 1441 students), I want to ensure the students are protected, along with everyone else, on campus. To be proactive, several years ago, we hired a retired law enforcement officer to be on the campus during the day. We have now expanded the coverage into the afternoon and evening. Again, nothing has happened, but we now have security on staff into the evening because our children are all over the complex with sports, religious education and clubs. There are also many meetings and activities that parishioners participate in. Our two security personnel are: Mr. Rob Puckett and Mr. Phil Wengrowski (see pictures). They are here to make sure our children and adults are safely where they need to be. Also, if there are concerns, they have the credentials and abilities to take care of any situation that may arise. And, just as a reminder (I wrote about this a long time ago), I have asked parishioners who are law enforcement personnel to be available at the Mass they attend to assist if someone dfdfdffdf
Page 33 Page
becomes ill or needs help. We also have security cameras throughout the entire campus, inside and outside the buildings, parking lots, athletic field, etc., to assist law enforcement if there is ever a need. I ask for your cooperation in keeping our campus safe and secure. I am grateful to the Lord for his concern and care for us. May we all take time this month to truly reflect on the dignity and respect for human life at all stages. Remember, I will be leaving on Monday for our pilgrimage to France. Know of my prayers each day as I celebrate Mass in the holy sites we will visit. Fr. Jim Bilot

Mercy in Action 2018 Update The call for help was met with quick response and we are happy to say our volunteer list for the day of service October 20 has been met.
**Our day of collection for Vista Maria is taking place a month later, to allow for a full parish collection before & after the Masses, on the weekend of November 17-18. The wish list will be posted again closer to the date. We are still taking any monetary donations for the S.O.A.P. initiative, to be able to get helpline phone numbers into the hands of victims of human trafficking. This is a very relevant topic for our youth today, and for the girls and young women at places like Vista Maria. If you wish to donate, please make checks payable to Divine Child Parish with a note ‘S.O.A.P.’ in the memo field and drop off in the rectory office. A Perfect Gift
Read the full version at usccb.org/perfect-gift. Soon after the birth of my son Charlie,* who has Down syndrome, a visitor asked whether he was “mild, moderate, or severe”—referring to his level of cognitive impairment. I was shocked. In my arms I held my beautiful baby boy, who defied easy categorization. It’s like looking at stained glass from the outside: the colors look dark, and you can’t see the figures. But inside, with the sun shining through, the effect can be brilliant.
Clinical labels don’t tell the whole story.
From inside our family, love illuminates our life with Charlie. What may seem dreary to others, perhaps even unbearable, is actually filled with beauty and color. Our love has nothing to do with his abilities. We love him simply because of who he is, and understanding this teaches us a fundamental truth: every life is a good and perfect gift. *Name changed for privacy. O God, our Creator, all life is in your hands from conception until death. Help us to cherish our children and to reverence the awesome privilege of our share in creation. May all people live and die in dignity and love. Bless all those who defend the rights of the unborn, the handicapped and the aged. Enlighten and be merciful toward those who fail to love, and give them peace. Let freedom be tempered by responsibility, integrity and morality. www.catholic.org

The Issues, The Candidates, and Your Vote 2018! What is Conscience & How Does it Relate to Voting?
Within Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, a word that immediately jumps out is conscience. What is conscience, and what does it mean for Catholics to have one that is wellformed? The Church refers to conscience as a personal tool that helps people recognize the truth about God, the world, and how to live their lives. Conscience is not a feeling, justification after the fact for an action, or the internalization of news and facts that fit only with one’s existing political ideology. Instead, it is “the voice of God resounding in the human heart, revealing the truth” of faith and reason and guiding individuals to do good and to avoid evil. The Church teaches that the will of God and the truths of the faith should be greater in the minds of Catholics than the latest societal pressures. In order to develop a conscience that is “well-formed,” Catholics are called to learn about Church teaching to inform their decisions. This is a lifelong process. Closely tied to developing a well-formed conscience is the need for prudence, or “love choosing wisely between the things that help and those which hinder.” Prudence helps individuals consider the best option for achieving a certain outcome. While the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) writes that certain evils must always be opposed— such as abortion, assisted suicide, euthanasia, the death penalty, embryonic stem cell research, and racism—there may be other issues in which Catholics choose different ways to respond. Prudence is a key guidance in these decisions. In the end, all are called, despite their differences, “to build a more just and peaceful world through morally acceptable means” that remembers the vulnerable and protects human dignity. In the context of the 2018 election, conscience formation can help voters weigh candidate positions and issues to best shape the direction of local, state, and national communities. The beauty of conscience—directed by prudence—is that it provides a moral framework with which to evaluate issues and candidates, as well as a guidance to use within regular family and community life. ■ Tips on Developing a Well-Formed Conscience • Be open to seeking the truth. • Study and reflect upon Catholic teaching. • Examine the facts about voting choices. • Pray about all decisions before voting www.micatholic.org
