Things Above from Fr. Bilot The pilgrimage to France was a wonderful opportunity to encounter the lives of the Saints and to see how the faith of many Catholics gave them the courage to build and to worship in such magnificent structures. When we landed in Paris on a Tuesday morning (Paris is six hours ahead of us), we boarded a bus and headed for the town of Lisieux. There, we visited the places that helped shape the life of St. Therese of Lisieux. St. Therese became a saint because she learned to love in simple ways. This “simple way” allowed people to encounter the Lord and grow in holiness. We visited the home where she grew up, the parish where she attended Mass, and the convent she lived in. We also celebrated Mass at the Basilica of Lisieux. We took a bus trip to Omaha Beach, the humbling location of the Normandy invasion. Following that, we went to the American Cemetery, where over 20,000 soldiers who lost their lives on the beach are buried. It was very humbling to be there. It certainly helps to keep our lives in check and to appreciate our freedom here in the U.S. The next day, we went to a majestic monastery, Mont St. Michel. If you have a moment to go online to see this monastery, you will be amazed at how they built it centuries ago. We celebrated Mass in one of the chapels at the Abbey. After our time in Lisieux, we headed back to Paris to visit the “touristy” sites and to peruse the Louvre Museum to see many famous sculptures and paintings, like the Mona Lisa. More importantly, in Paris, we visited Notre Dame Cathedral. We also celebrated Mass in one of the crypt chapels at the Basilica of Sacre Coeur (a site where Eucharistic Exposition has been occurring for over 100 years!). Despite the secularism that has destroyed the faith in Europe, there are remnants, the people of God, who will carry on the beliefs of Jesus Christ until people come to their senses and return to the practice of the Catholic faith. While in Paris, we visited the Shrine of the Miraculous Medal and saw the incorrupt body of St. Catherine Laboure, who received a vision from the Blessed Mother with the instruction to create the Miraculous Medal. I would recommend you take some time to read the history of St. Catherine Laboure and the beauty of the Miraculous Medal. From there, we went to the tomb of St. Vincent de Paul. He was such a great man. Today, we have our own St. Vincent de Paul society that helps the poor and needy. Our last destination was Lourdes. We spent two days there taking time to relax, reflect and pray. We participated in Eucharistic Adoration and the candlelight procession reciting the Holy Rosary. Some of us went to

Page 33 Page

the healing waters of the baths (I will have to write another article about the experience). One of the major highlights of the trip was spending time in Lourdes, where the Blessed Mother appeared to St. Bernadette. I am grateful to God for safe travels for all of us pilgrims. There were no problems and travel was smooth. For those who submitted prayer intentions, I literally brought your intentions with me to the altar every day. I pray you will receive the Graces of those prayers. I want to thank you for your prayers for all of us. We are truly blessed. Fr. Jim Bilot

The Star of Evangelization Last week, in discussing the importance of prayer, specifically calling on the Holy Spirit, we looked at how any work of evangelization is first and foremost God’s work. It is only in relying on Him that our work can bear any fruit. In addition to calling on the Holy Spirit, and growing in our personal spiritual lives, we should also be calling on the assistance of the most powerful intercessor and first evangelizer, the

Blessed Virgin Mary. The Blessed Mother is vital in the work of evangelization for three main reasons. She is needed as an intercessor, as a model and as a mother. As an intercessor, Mary gives us the model of how to wait and call on the grace of the Holy Spirit. After the Ascension of Jesus into heaven, Mary, the Queen of Apostles, along with the Twelve, prayed for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit that Jesus told them about. When they did, the Holy Spirit, the Power of God, came down upon them giving them the courage and boldness to preach the Gospel. The immediate effect was the conviction in their hearts to set out on the mission to evangelize. Relying on the intercession of Mary, we must call on God to give us that same conviction to fulfill our own mission to share the Gospel. As a model, when Mary first heard the news of Jesus, through the angel Gabriel, her first response was to tell someone else. Scripture tells us that Mary, “arose and went with haste into the hill country,” to tell her cousin Elizabeth (Luke 1:39). The message of Mary to her cousin was such good news, and filled with such joy, that, as soon as Mary began to speak, the infant in Elizabeth’s womb leaped for joy. The joy was so radical, so powerful and so contagious that it even caught the excitement of John the Baptist, the still to be born son of Elizabeth. Mary can model for us how we might be missionaries of joy who share good news of Jesus with the world. As a mother, Mary knows her children and what they need. In 1531, in the same century that 3 million Catholics left the Church in England due to the English Reformation, over 9 million native people became Catholic in Mexico due to the influence of Our Lady of Guadalupe. When Our Lady appeared to the insignificant Juan Diego and left her image on his tilma, or apron, many native Americans, who previously were notoriously difficult to evangelize, recognized in the image of Our Lady, a lady who looked like them and was more powerful than their own pagan deities and then converted to Catholic Christianity. The Mother of Jesus still wants to be a mother to us as we continue, with her, the work of her son in sharing his message with the world. Fr. Matthew Hood The text of the letter can be found online at the site UnleashTheGospel.org (Section 4.10.1 of Unleash the Gospel)

A Homeless Dinner

It’s less than a month away, but think about the possibility of becoming a part of a homeless dinner, especially since many locations serve the poor in the month of November. Consider this an opportunity for stewardship. It’s a once a year event and surely a couple hours out of your busy schedule, and away from your devices, gives you an immense feeling of satisfaction, of truly responding to Jesus’ Way. Many churches, of all types, engage in this yearly ritual. Of course, shelters downtown and the Capuchins address the poor’s hunger on a daily basis. This, too, is a perfect outlet for stewardship. Just inquire about. Be proactive. Do it. On the home front, here in Dearborn, Sacred Heart partners with the Methodist Church, on Garrison, every year, the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Christian Service organizes this important event. Different shifts are open for sign -up. You can do prep earlier in the afternoon. You can serve the poor, face to face. Or you can do clean-up. Your choice. Two hours. And it’s a memory that stays in your heart. Twenty years ago, I signed up as a fluke to serve the poor, face to face. This gesture pulled at my heartstrings and I’ve returned to my usual spot year after year…to connect with the poor and to become humble. This action grounds me as well as my beliefs. These poor people value you for serving them. What’s more important…is the fact that I value them. And that’s a good thing. God bless and please keep the poor in your prayers. Please remember the poor boxes, as well. We are humbled by your loyalty to our cause. ~Mindy Delano

Priesthood Sunday is October 28, 2018 In Thanksgiving for our Divine Child priests, please consider giving a Spiritual Bouquet of Prayers to Fr. Jim Bilot, Fr. Matt Hood and Fr. Tom Urban. Killing the Pain, Not the Patient: Palliative Care vs. Assisted Suicide Read the full version at usccb.org/endoflifecare.

Assisted suicide is in the news and on lawmakers’ agendas. Supporters call it “aid in dying” and claim it’s just another option for end-of-life care. But it’s radically different from the practice of palliative care, the healing art of relieving pain and other distressing symptoms for patients who are seriously ill. Did You Know? Medical organizations like the American Medical Association, oppose assisted suicide. Palliative care intends to comfort a patient, addressing physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs. Assisted suicide, by contrast, directly intends the patient’s death. It ignores any underlying problems, and instead abandons and eliminates the patient who has the problems. As a society and as individuals, we must dedicate ourselves to providing genuinely compassionate care that protects God’s gift of life. This is a summary of a USCCB Respect Life Program article by the same name and is reprinted with permission. © 2018, USCCB, Washington, D.C. All rights reserved.

CELEBRATING PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS LOVE THEIR PRIESTS!

The Knights of Columbus have been helping seminarians since its beginning in 1882. With Father McGivney’s dream to be able to pay for his younger brothers’ formation through the seminary, the support of our future priests has been an ongoing mission of our order. As the strong right arm of the Church, the Knights of Columbus are committed to providing moral, financial and spiritual support to future priests and religious at all stages of their formation.

Do you want to work with other men to support our priests? On Sunday, November 11, some men who are interested in joining our council will be attending a Major Degree (this is your chance to join the K of C Fraternity of Catholic Men) at St. Collette Church in Livonia. This will be the last opportunity before the end of the year to join our council. This is only a couple of weeks away, so please contact us so we can get the paperwork moving. There will be more opportunities after the Christmas Holidays, but why put it off? Become a Foley Knight soon – you don’t know what you are missing! Call our Membership Director Steve Lentz at 313-949-5162. We hope to hear from you soon!

From its founding, the Knights of Columbus has held a special symbiotic devotion to priests and have committed to assist them in any way necessary. Here at Foley Council, we are fortunate to have both our pastor, Fr. Jim Bilot and associate pastor, Fr. Matt Hood as thirddegree members of our council. Fr. Tom Urban is also a Knight of Columbus of the fourth-degree. RSVP (Refund Support Vocations Program) is an incentive instituted by Supreme to encourage local councils to support seminarians by returning 20% for every $500 gifted to a seminarian by a council. The Knights of Columbus continue to stand in solidarity with our priests and religious. The Program allows councils the opportunity to journey with their seminarians to provide prayers and moral support along with the gift of money. Bishop Foley Council “adopted” both Marcin Wiktor and Adrian Frackowiak four years ago when they arrived from Poland to attend Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Seminary. Both men joined the K of C and our council and attended events when they were able. We have kept them both in prayer over the years and witnessed their formation and will watch as they are ordained priests in the upcoming year. This year, one of our newest Foley members was admitted into Sacred Heart Major Seminary to begin his discernment and formation into the priesthood. Christian Squiers became a Foley Knight in June and became our unprecedented third seminarian supported by our council at one time. We were happy to support another Brother Foley Knight who is on his way to becoming a priest. Foley Council currently has three seminarians in our council and we are proud to support each of them through our council’s RSVP program. Another way the Knights are helping seminarians, on a much greater scale, is through the Michigan K of C Endowment Scholarship Fund. In the summer of 2017, Archbishop Vigneron challenged the Michigan Knights of Columbus to establish an endowment fund to aid tuition for seminarians at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. The State Board committed councils from around the state to raise ONE MILLION DOLLARS for this endowment by June 30, 2026! Foley members have already given over $600 for our first year; and the State has raised over $60,000 so far and intends on having $100,000 by the next Archbishop’s Gala in June of 2019! …how can YOU help, you ask? You do not need to be a Knight to help support this cause. Anyone can donate to this 501(c)3 charitable fund. It is a great way to support the future of our priesthood. St. John Paul II said, “we cannot have the Mass without the Eucharist and we cannot have the Eucharist without the Priest!” Please consider a tax-deductible donation to this endowment fund and help the Knights reach their goal of $1million. Make checks payable to: Michigan Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc. Place your check in an envelope marked “K of C.” You can either place it in the collection basket or drop it off at the rectory office. We will make sure it gets to the proper parties.

Foley Warden and Vocations Director Jim Bell (left) presents Adrian and Christian with their $500 RSVP checks – Marcin was not present; he is preparing for his December ordination in Biloxi, Mississippi. He received his check in the mail.

Right to Life - LIFESPAN

Abortion is NOT a Constitutional Right!

DID YOU KNOW? On January 22, 1973, when the U.S. Supreme Court handed down the Roe v. Wade decision, it never declared abortion itself to be a constitutional right. The Justices even confessed that, “We need not resolve the difficult question of when life begins…the judiciary at this point in the development of man’s knowledge is not in a position to speculate as to the answer.” The Supreme Court made a key admission: “If this suggestion of personhood is established, the appellant’s case (i.e. “Roe”), of course collapses, for the fetus’ right to life is then guaranteed specifically by the 14th Amendment.” www.miLIFESPAN.org For more info: LIFESPAN 734.422.6230 SAVE THE DATES:

Archdiocesan News Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, An act of mercy and an act of faith: With these two foundational assertions, Pope Francis summarized a Christian’s approach to burial. The context for the Holy Father’s remark was his reflections on the corporal works of mercy, which he delivered over the course of the Year of Mercy. “It is my burning desire,” he stated while introducing the Jubilee Year, that “the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. It will be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty” (Misericordiae Vultus, 15). Among these works of mercy to which the Holy Father hoped to “reawaken our conscience” is the call to bury the dead. Pastors in the Archdiocese have observed for years now a shift in our societal expectations toward funerals, and have regrettably noted that this has begun to influence even the Catholic faithful. Perhaps swayed by a materialistic and overly practical approach to life, many have begun to see this noble act of mercy as an unnecessary luxury, or even an inconvenience. It was in response to this development, five years ago, that I felt the need to write the pastoral letter, In Union with Christ’s Dying and Rising, on the importance of Christian funerals. That letter is a fuller and more complete reflection than this message on the beauty, importance and dignity of Christian funerals, and I firmly believe a fresh re-reading of it would be beneficial today. Since the publication of my letter, however, there have been two important developments in the life of the local Church concerning Christian burial that I desire to share with you here. The first development is the need to re-envision everything we do in light of our mission to become a band of joyful missionary disciples, called to Unleash the Gospel in our communities. We know that Jesus Christ is risen from the dead, and because of this fact, we believe in eternal life, the Resurrection of the Dead and the communion of saints. The funeral vigil, Eucharist and committal (burial or interment) announce to us, through the readings, homily and prayers, the glorious news that Jesus is alive. This is Pope Francis’ insight in calling burial “an act of great faith.” From beginning to end, a funeral evangelizes us, sharing the good news that God is near and that even in our sorrow, difficulties and distress, we can have joyful confidence in his providence. On our end, through participating in the funeral liturgies, we proclaim to those who have little or no faith, or who do not practice it, the good news that God is mercy. We proclaim through our actions that we are certain that our loved ones are not memories, but that they are alive, they will arise and live for all eternity. Joyful missionary disciples know that God does not allow his creation to pass away. We witness to who our God is by the way we care for our dead. The second development is more concrete. In response to the Holy Father’s call to build a culture of mercy, our Catholic Funeral and Cemetery Services has begun an initiative called “Gather Them Home.” The need for such an initiative has slowly developed over the past few decades. It has become fairly common for Catholics to choose, either for themselves or for those they love, to have their bodies cremated upon passing from this life. Although ordinarily the hope of the Church is to be able to celebrate the funeral liturgy with the body present, cremation is permitted by the Church when circumstances justify it. A consequence of this, however, is that it also has become increasingly common for the remains of loved ones to be kept in the home after the funeral liturgy. I know there could be a variety of reasons for this: a desire to be close to the one we are grieving, a lack of financial resources to purchase a suitable burial place, or even an inability to arrange for a committal during the short time that family is in town. The point here is not to critique these reasons, but to offer now the opportunity to reverently place these sacred remains in a sacred place.

This November, in honor of All Souls Month, we are encouraging the faithful to bring to three of our Archdiocesan Catholic cemeteries (Holy Sepulchre, Our Lady of Hope, and St. Joseph) the remains of their loved ones who have passed, in order for them to be entrusted to their final resting place. This initiative will begin on November 2, the day we remember All Souls, when there will be special committal services for those who will be taking their rightful places in our Catholic cemeteries. In order to properly prepare for these occasions, Catholic Funeral and Cemetery Services will work ahead of time with anyone who wishes to participate. After November 2, these committal services will continue on the 3rd Friday of each month at both Holy Sepulchre and Our Lady of Hope Cemeteries. More information about this opportunity, including details on how to participate, is available at the Gather Them Home website. It is the conviction of the Church that the earthly remains of our brothers and sisters in Christ deserve to be properly committed to a sacred place. As you read this, you may think of someone with whom you can share this opportunity, perhaps with gentle encouragement to take advantage of it. Our cemeteries are extensions of our parishes: places for prayer, reflection, hope and remembrance. And from these sacred places, those buried there will rise on the Last Day. God has done great things through our loved ones, and they have merited the dignity of a holy burial in a sacred place. Please know that my prayers accompany each of you as you consider Christ’s call to undertake this act of mercy on his behalf, as part of our efforts to unleash the Gospel. May the Holy Spirit ever deepen our conviction that Christ is risen and give us the courage to live in joyful witness that we have risen with him. Entrusting each of you to the intercession of St. Joseph of Arimathea, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron

Blessed are the clean of heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Matthew 5:8-10
