Things Above from Fr. Bilot With the changing of the times, there are always changes in cultural practices (some good and some not so good). I would like to clarify one of the practices from a Catholic standpoint: the desire for cremation when a loved one dies. The Catholic Church does not discourage cremation; however, the Church prefers to celebrate a funeral Mass with the body and then burial. Why? First, when someone dies, it is important that we bring their body to church for a funeral Mass. The Rite of Funeral is most relevant when the body is present for the prayers and the gestures: sprinkling of the body with holy water (a reminder of our Baptism), placing the pall over the casket (a reminder of the Baptismal clothes worn at Baptism), placing of the crucifix on top of the pall (our life and death in the Lord Jesus), and the incensing of the body (a sign of our prayers of hope of our loved being with the Lord in heaven). These gestures are extremely important in bringing healing to those who grieve the death of someone they love. After the funeral Mass, it is permissible to either bury the body or have the body cremated and then buried in a sacred space. Please know that those who do not bury the remains are not respecting the deceased. We all need our resting place, and holy sites are set aside for the dead. Our Catholic cemeteries are holy places - the ground is consecrated for those who have died. When our ashes are spread out somewhere, or left in the home, there is a sense of disunity with God our Creator and in our trust in the Lord's care for the living and for the dead. In response to the issue of those who have not buried the cremains of their deceased loved ones, the Archdiocese of Detroit is sponsoring a "Gather Them Home" service. "Gather Them Home" is a no-cost mission put forth by the Archdiocese of Detroit Cemeteries to properly lay to rest the cremains of all loved ones who have gone before us. For more information, visit: www.gatherthemhome.org or call 734 -285-2155. There will be Mass and Committal Services at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery - Southfield, Our Lady of Hope Cemetery - Brownstown, and St. Joseph Cemetery - Monroe. The Mass and burial will take place at the above-listed cemeteries on All Souls Day, November 2, 2018. Please spread the word about this wonderful gift for the families of those who have died and have not received a proper burial. I hope you are enjoying the beautiful colors of autumn. As I have said in previous years, God has taken His paint brushes out and painted the canvas of creation in beauty! Fr. Jim

SPECIAL COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2018
WORLD MISSION SUNDAY! This year on World Mission Sunday, we listened to the Gospel account of Jesus reminding His disciples that “the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” This is what the Lord is asking us today as we reach out to those servant-missionaries who are giving their lives for the spread of the gospel and the support of the “Young Churches” they have established. Please be generous!
CAPUCHIN KIDS HALLOWEEN CANDY COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND! We are collecting bags of Halloween candy for the Capuchin Soup Kitchen kids. Collection boxes will available in the Gathering Room next weekend. God bless you for your kindness! Jim Quinn (313-274-0952)

Encounter, Grow, Witness As I get closer to the end of my reflections on Unleash the Gospel, because I am finally almost to the end of the document, the section that I am currently on is called, “Calling Upon the Advocate.” The Archbishop touches upon how the whole process of the Archdiocesan Synod on the New Evangelization, which led to the drafting of Unleash the Gospel, is meant to have its foundation in prayer by calling upon the Advocate, the Holy Spirit. As I sit here writing this, my thoughts go back to several years ago as a seminarian when briefly stayed at Divine Child for my Christmas break. I remember sitting at Mass and, along with the whole parish, we prayed together the prayer for a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit which, while slightly adapted, was prayed before the opening session of the Second Vatican Council. As I remember praying that prayer with all of you, without then knowing that I would become the Associate Pastor here several years later, I am reminded of how this effort to implement Unleash the Gospel has been so thoroughly steeped in prayer and the grace of the Holy Spirit. In a few weeks, the whole parish will focus on Unleash the Gospel, along with all the other parishes in the Archdiocese, for three consecutive Sundays. While more information on those three weekends will be forthcoming, our prayer must never relent. While challenges to evangelization always seem to be growing, the Holy Spirit is more powerful. The Holy Spirit is the power upon which we must rely! Here is that same prayer that we prayed together over five years ago: Prayer for a New Pentecost Father in heaven, renew Your wonders in our time, as though by a new Pentecost and grant that Your holy Church in Detroit, praying perseveringly and insistently with one mind, together with Mary, the mother of Jesus, and guided by Sts. Joseph and Anne, may increase the reign of the Divine Savior, the reign of truth and justice, the reign of love and peace. Amen. Fr. Matthew Hood The text of the letter can be found online at the site UnleashTheGospel.org (Section 4.10 of Unleash the Gospel).

St. Vincent de Paul A Successful Walk for the Poor The Sacred Heart-Divine Child SVdP was pleased over its recent fund raiser, Walk for the Poor. On September 29th, a glorious Autumn day set the scene for hundreds of walkers represented by a great many church SVdPs. Walkers that wished to unite their SVdP conference, held up posters with their name so groups could walk together. At the Poor Walk, Pamela Szpytman, President of Sacred HeartDivine Child SVdP, communicated to Vincentian walkers of the outstanding collection from Divine Child. “I counted it myself,” she exclaimed. “And guess what? It was $1,600.45.” Walkers were astounded. Sacred Heart’s collection was $302.00. Together, the grand total was $1,902.45. Last year’s 2017 Walk for the Poor netted $1,553.00 from Divine Child and Sacred Heart’s amount was $521.00. A grand total of $2,074 was collected. The Conference hoped to beat last year’s total but was still happy with the outcome. On the home front, we wish to express our gratitude and ask the Lord for blessings on people who contributed offerings recently in September. SVdP is honored by everyone’s loyalty to their cause and appreciates contributors who had a “hand” in making this event one very successful fund raiser. God bless and please keep the poor in your prayers. ~Mindy Delano, Treasurer

Priesthood Sunday is October 28, 2018 In Thanksgiving for our Divine Child priests, please consider giving a Spiritual Bouquet of Prayers to Fr. Jim Bilot, Fr. Matt Hood and Fr. Tom Urban. Bridges of Mercy for Healing after Abortion Read the full version at usccb.org/endoflifecare.
Let our priests know you are praying for them by filling out the form below and dropping it in the collection basket, anytime during the month of October.
OUR PRIESTS NEED OUR PRAYERS! Maria, Vanessa, Li, Jennifer and Darryl* are among the tens of millions of Americans whose lives have been directly touched by abortion. Like so many others, they have experienced regret, guilt and grief. But, as they have also experienced, God’s healing love and mercy are always possible.
Life is a gift from God and so is His mercy. Many Catholics want to help women and men who have experienced abortion, but some don’t know how to begin. Visit usccb.org/ bridges-of-mercy to learn how people from various walks of life can assist friends, family members, fellow parishioners, clients — or perhaps even themselves. Also, be aware that the U.S. Church’s Project Rachel Ministry for healing after abortion offers confidential, compassionate help. Visit HopeAfterAbortion.org or call 1-800-456HOPE (4673).

OCTOBER IS THE MONTH OF THE ROSARY
Just over a hundred years ago on October 13, our Blessed Mother made her sixth and final appearance to three children in the town of Fatima in Portugal. This glorious event was culminated with the Miracle of the Sun; when the sun shone so brightly and appeared to creep increasingly closer to the earth while spinning in vibrant colors. There were no cell phones or cameras to capture this momentous occasion, but we as a people of faith believe in miracles. Through the power of God and Our Blessed Mother, we continue to be strengthened on our journey of faith. Throughout history, Our Lady has acted as an advocate for us. She relentlessly continues her attempt to strengthen us and lead us to her son Jesus. Her message is no different today than it has been over the years. Pray the Rosary, pray for the conversion of sinners and pray for peace. In our world today, filled with so much violence, greed, evil and degradation, we need Our Lady’s help more than ever. When we become a Knight of Columbus, we are invested with a rosary and make a pledge to carry our rosary with us at all times and pray it whenever possible. We Knights take this promise seriously and try to promote its significance within our order, parishes and communities. One way we do this is our 5th Sunday Rosary Program. Our Council Warden Jim Bell has organized an “America Needs Fatima” for the past five years at his home in the Greenfield Village Senior Living Complex. When weather permits, we pray the Rosary outdoors at the corner of Greenfield and Ford Road. This year, with the cool and damp weather, the annual Fatima Rosary was held in the building’s chapel as some residents went out and weathered the cold. Jim led the group of about 25 residents and brother Knights in song, prayer and contemplation. The Rosary Group here at Divine Child holds monthly Rosary Rallies outdoors to bring attention to the commitment we Catholics have to pray for peace in our world. There are multiple opportunities right within our parish to join others to pray the prayer that Our Blessed Mother gave St. Dominic so many years ago. I encourage all my brother knights to remember the promise they made; and whether you say the Rosary in a group or on your own, let Our Lady know that you hear her request and are answering her call.
Are You Hearing the Call to Prayer?
On Sunday, November 11, some men who are interested in joining our council will be attending a Major Degree (this is your chance to join the Knights of Columbus fraternity of Catholic men) at St. Collette Church in Livonia. This will be the last opportunity before the end of the year to join our council. This is only a couple of weeks away, so please contact us so we can get the paperwork moving. There will be more opportunities after the Christmas Holidays, but why put it off? Become a Foley Knight soon – you don’t know what you are missing!
