Things Above from Fr. Bilot As you read this edition of the bulletin this weekend, I and 48 others are continuing our pilgrimage in France. On Sunday, we will be arriving in Lourdes, where we will have the opportuntiy to pray and experience the beauty and wonder of the great gift given to St. Bernadette, and all of us, by our Blessed Mother. Please know, as promised, that I am keeping you and your intentions in prayer. I pray that our Blessed Mother will continue to guide our parish, and each of us, to the heart of Jesus, who is our Peace and Salvation. We have been blessed to have over 160 people attend our current faith formation series, "Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible." This wonderful and in-depth series is taking us on a journey of God's Salvation history through Sacred Scripture. The Bible, the Scriptures, is a great resource for deepening our relationship with the Lord and helping us deal with the issues and concerns of the day. The Wisdom of God is poured out through the pages of the Scriptures. Understanding the Scriptures and how they impact our life is tremendous. The series helps us to embrace God's plan throughout history, from the time of Creation in the Book of Genesis, to the great gift of the Second Coming in the Book of Revelation. Having the kerygma (the Word of God) in our hearts allows us to go out into the world with confidence to spread the love of God to others. If you didn't have the opportunity to join us in the series, please keep attuned to our future series offerings to help us grow closer to the Lord and His Church. Throughout Salvation history, God has continually called us to draw closer to Him. Many times, He calls people to Himself through other people who love and practice their belief and faith in Jesus and the Church. This past Tuesday, we began our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). We have 26 people, children and adults, seeking to become Catholic, either through Baptism or making a Profession of Faith and receiving the Sacraments (Reconciliation, Confirmation and Eucharist) for the first time. If you know of anyone who might be interested in knowing about the teachings and faith of the Catholic Church, please call Jodi Ann Micallef at the Rectory (313-277-3110). It is very possible that the Lord is asking you to deepen your faith by inviting others to explore their relationship with Jesus Christ in the Catholic Church. I arrive home on Wednesday. Please pray for safe and uneventful travels back home to Detroit. In prayer, Fr. Jim Bilot

SPECIAL COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2018

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY! Next Sunday is World Mission Sunday, a special day on which we unite ourselves with Catholics all over the world to pray and sacrifice for the missionary efforts of the Church. This Sunday, the Church will canonize Pope Paul VI who gave us the word “Evangelize” in his Apostolic Exhortation, “Announcing the Gospel.” In this work he wrote, “For the Church, evangelizing means bringing the Good News into the strata of humanity, and through its influence transforming humanity from within and making it new.” On this same day, Salvadorian Archbishop Oscar Romero will be canonized. He was martyred for the faith and for the cause of justice. These two events and celebrating the missionary activity of the Church gives us a great sequel to the following weeks, during which we will explain and encourage our people to “Unleash the Gospel” and its program. Do be generous in supporting the Pontifical Mission Society for the Propagation of the Faith, which is the Church’s principal means of spreading the gospel throughout the world.

Priesthood Sunday is October 28, 2018 In Thanksgiving for our Divine Child priests, please consider giving a Spiritual Bouquet of Prayers to Fr. Jim Bilot, Fr. Matt Hood and Fr. Tom Urban. Caring for Loved Ones at Life’s End Read the full version at usccb.org/endoflifecare.

Let our priests know you are praying for them by filling out the form below and dropping it in the collection basket, anytime during the month of October.

OUR PRIESTS NEED OUR PRAYERS! We are created to depend upon one another and walk together in suffering. But when loved ones approach life’s end, we may not know how to provide compassionate care.

The dying process is a sacred time. Surround your friend or family member with love, support, and companionship that are “anchored in unconditional respect for their human dignity, beginning with respect for the inherent value of their lives” (To Live Each Day with Dignity, USCCB). Learn about these 10 tips at usccb.org/endoflifecare. 1. Invite God in. 2. Listen. 3. Inform yourself. 4. Be steadfast in compassion. 5. Help them achieve closure. 6. Provide opportunities for resolution. 7. Reminisce. 8. Provide a peaceful atmosphere. 9. Show tenderness. 10. Bear their transition patiently.

St. Vincent de Paul

An Angel of Mercy

Tsuai Hits Idesia Date t Hep Faiies i Idesia A 7.5 magnitude earthquake caused a tsunami to strike a coastal city on Indonesia's island of Sulawesi. Families face devastation with loss of lives, homes and livelihoods. It is likely that the number of lives lost will rise as reports of family members missing come in. Catholic Relief Services has mobilized a team to reach the families affected by the devastating tsunami. Along with local partners, CRS will provide emergency shelter and critical living supplies. Your gift will help provide important lifesaving care for families affected by disasters in Indonesia.

Your sisters and brothers in Indonesia need you now. Please donate at: https://www.crs.org/ways-to-give.

There has been evidence of an Angel of Mercy in our midst at our Sacred Heart/Divine Child St. Vincent de Paul Conference. Our drawer of food vouchers, stored at Sacred Heart’s church office, have completely run out numerous times this past year. These food vouchers assist poor clients who immediately need food. Their situation is so dire, that there is no time for them to seek a food pantry, even one so close, such as St. Sebastian’s Food Pantry. You see, our drawer of food vouchers has been replenishing due to the actions of a human Angel of Mercy, who goes about quietly serving the poor, in these methods, without recognition to most people. It’s been said that real Angels of Mercy, on the heavenly level, rely heavily on people’s help. In fact, this group of Angels always looks for human recruits. If you see someone, a group, or even a cause that needs assistance, you can reach out and be a human Angel of Mercy. Your act of mercy could be as big as volunteering your time to a cause close to your heart or even donating a regular sum of money to a favorite charity. On a simpler level, it can be as small as offering a stranger a smile or offering a few words of encouragement to a friend. From the complex to the tiniest everyday ways, if we send out love into the world, it contributes to healing on a global scale. In some shape or form, the love that you demonstrate to St. Vincent de Paul inextricably transcends into love for our clients who so desperately crave it. This pleases our Angels of Mercy on the heavenly scale. And that’s a good thing. SVdP humbly thanks this human Angel of Mercy for such a giving heart. Please remember the poor box located on the inside back wall of the church and pray for the poor. ~Mindy Delano

THANKS DIVINE CHILD FOR A SUCCESSFUL TOOTSIE ROLL CAMPAIGN Thank you to the generous Divine Child parishioners who attended last weekend’s Masses and donated to the Knights of Columbus Columbus Day Tootsie Roll Drive for the intellectually and mentally Some Foley Members family and friends of Foley after Mass disabled. Foley Knights, Families of Foley & Friends of Foley were out in full force with our yellow aprons and canisters. It was great to have our members wives, kids, grandkids and friends help with the collection. The Knights of Columbus is a GREAT family organization. Foley humbly thanks you, as you did not let us down. Your donations do great things around the State of Michigan and within our local parish and community helping those with special needs. Thank you, thank you … thank you! As the weather begins to chill and we seem to get comfortable with our fall routines of school, work, football games and honey-do lists, now may be the perfect opportunity to join our brotherhood. Before you know it, the snow will be flying and we will be preparing for Christmas! Some men who are interested in joining our council will be attending a Major Degree (your chance to join the KofC fraternity of Catholic men) on Sunday, November 11 at St. Collette Church in Livonia. This will be the last opportunity before the end of the year to join our council. This is only a couple of weeks away, so please contact us so we can get the paperwork moving. There will be more opportunities after the Christmas Holidays, but why put it off? Become a Foley Knight soon – you don’t know what you are missing!

Does This Type of Brotherhood Interest You?

If you are not a Knight and would like more information on becoming a Knight, we are recruiting for a Major Degree on November 11. Please use this time to explore what the Knights do. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to someone, then go to www.KofC.org to see for yourself the good works we brother knights do throughout the world. Then, call our Membership Director Steve Lentz at 313949-5162. I hope to hear from you soon!

Mass for Commerce Everyone is invited to a morning of inspiration by joining His Excellency Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron and the Catholic business and professional community at the 25th Annual Mass for Commerce on Wednesday, October 17, at 8 a.m. in the Chapel of Sacred Heart Major Seminary, 2701 W. Chicago Blvd., Detroit, 48206. This celebration of the Eucharist reminds Catholic men and women that they are not just business and professional people who happen to be Catholic, but people who recognize they are stewards of God’s gifts and their need for the Holy Spirit to be with them, guiding them every day. A breakfast will follow Mass. Fr. Tim Hipskind, S.J., author of What’s Your Decision? How to Make Choices with Confidence and Clarity: An Ignatian Approach to Decision Making, will sign free copies of his book and answer questions at the breakfast. For more information, call 313-596-7430 or visit the web at www.massforcommerce.org.

The Issues, The Candidates, and Your Vote 2018! Michigan Catholic Conference Urges ‘No’ Vote on Ballot Question to Legalize Recreational Marijuana MCC Joins Healthy and Productive Michigan Coalition in Opposition to Proposal 1

October 2, 2018 (Lansing, Mich.) — With a unanimous vote from its Board of Directors, Michigan Catholic Conference (MCC) is saying no to the legalization of recreational marijuana in Michigan and, as such, recommends a “No” vote on Proposal 1 at the November 6th General Election ballot. MCC is also joining the official ballot question committee opposed to Proposal 1, Healthy and Productive Michigan, which includes the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police, Michigan Sheriffs’ Association, the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan, Citizens for Traditional Values, and the Michigan State Medical Society, among others. In the coming weeks, Catholics across the state will have an opportunity to learn more about Proposal 1 through MCC’s FOCUS publication, which is distributed in mass quantities to every Catholic parish, school and institution across the state. According to the FOCUS document: “Questions about this proposal considered by the MCC Board of Directors, which includes the diocesan bishops in Michigan, asked if this measure promotes the common good and uplifts the moral fiber in the state. After careful review, the MCC Board is urging a No vote on the measure, citing the harm it may cause for Michigan families, health outcomes, communities and workers.” Readers of the MCC publication will observe a series of questions and answers, including how the proposal applies to Catholic teaching, as well as how approval of this policy will not protect youth, improve family life or health, nor will it improve communities or make people better workers. In an effort to ensure an informed vote, MCC is presenting to readers the official language for Proposal 1 that will appear on the ballot, various claims by the supporters of Proposal 1 (along with MCC’s response to those claims), as well as several organizations and individuals that have taken a position on the ballot question. The document is heavily sourced with more than a dozen footnotes from leading academic journals and state and federal government agencies. As a 501c3 organization, MCC does not endorse political candidates or parties, nor does it make financial contributions to either. MCC does take positions on legislative issues and ballot questions. Michigan Catholic Conference is the official public policy voice of the Catholic Church in this state. www.micatholic.org
