Things Above from Fr. Bilot I hope that all of you had the opportunity to take advantage of venerating the relic of Blessed Fr. Solanus Casey and reading the beautiful biography of his life through the banners strategically placed throughout the church. On Thursday, January 10, a small group of people assembled for the reception of the relic and, that evening, a group came together for Evening Prayer. On Friday through Monday, we had docents stationed by the relic, which was displayed for private veneration and prayer. Our Elementary School had a prayer service on Friday afternoon, and each child had the opportunity to pray and venerate the relic. Friday evening, we hosted a "Night of Mercy, a time for prayer in front of the Blessed Sacrament, along with Praise and Worship music, centering us around Blessed Solanus Casey's love for the Lord Jesus and the Holy Eucharist. The Sacrament of Reconciliation was also made available. A couple of hundred people joined us for this beautiful event of prayer and Adoration! There was also time for people to venerate the relic after the service. On Saturday, we had private veneration and, at 1:00 PM, we had a Healing Service with about 200 people in attendance. Each person was given an opportunity to pray for their needs, or for those whom they love, and then given the opportunity to be individually blessed with the relic. It was a powerful, yet quiet, time to be in Church. The Saturday Vigil Mass and the Sunday Masses found many people coming to pray and venerate the relic. A special moment occurred after I finished administering the Sacrament of Baptism on Sunday afternoon. The newlybaptized were given the opportunity to be touched by the relic. Following the Baptisms, the church was being "undecorated" from Christmas, so the Sisters at the Convent hosted the relic. Monday found us once again venerating the relic in church. The High School celebrated Mass at noon and veneration followed. Later, Daytime Prayer was prayed, and the day ended with a Prayer Service with the Religious Education children. Tuesday morning found us saying goodbye, as the relic needed to be returned to the Archdiocesan Chancery. I was humbled by the number of people who venerated the relic and were interested in learning more about Blessed Fr. Solanus Casey. I firmly and humbly believe that having the relic here at Divine Child has blessed our parish in ways that we will never know. I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit moving throughout his time here. I could see the tears of sorrow, pain, happiness, fascination and joy on many faces who encountered the relic of this holy man - Blessed Father Solanus Casey. If you have not had the opportunity to visit St. Bonaventure Monastery, where Blessed Casey lived, worked and prayed, I would strongly make this a family outing or an

Page 33 Page

individual pilgrimage. His body is interred there as well. The monastery is located on Mt. Elliott, a couple miles south of I-94 and a mile north of Jefferson, on the lower eastside of Detroit. They have a beautiful chapel (recently restored, though I have not yet seen the restoration), a wonderful museum of his life, and a gift shop. The grace of God cannot be outdone. In our humility and openness to the Lord, Jesus will shower us with what we need to live a holy and honored life. Blessed Casey did not have an easy life, but he thanked God ahead of time, no matter what the outcome would be. He trusted in God's providence for his life. I am glad he did, for he is a role model for all of us. He is a true warrior for Christ! I want to sincerely thank everyone who helped make this event possible, especially Jodi Ann Micallef, our Evangelization/RCIA Coordinator, for taking the lead in organizing the event, Fr. Matt, Matt Simpson, Director of Music, and for our docents and the Knights of Columbus, who spent their free time being present to watch over the relic. It was a blessed labor of love, but well worth it!

Blessings, Fr. Jim Bilot

Thanking God Ahead of Time It has been a powerful blessing for our parish to host the first class relic of Blessed Solanus Casey. It was beautiful to see people of all ages and backgrounds coming forward to venerate this great saint who visited us. In places like Europe, where the Church is much older than it is in the United States, it is common to have many saints from a specific area. However, for us, Blessed Solanus is our saint of Detroit. In fact, the process of beatification is essentially the proclamation that a person is a saint for a local church. The Mass for Blessed Solanus Casey is only allowed in the Archdiocese of Detroit and a few other places where he lived and ministered. When a person is canonized, or made a saint, then the Mass in their honor can be celebrated anywhere in the world. So, Blessed Solanus is our saint in a special way. The relic visit, I believe, will continue to bear fruit for our parish and community. Blessed Solanus is an example to us that holiness is possible. In terms of actual accomplishments, Fr. Solanus did not accomplish much in his lifetime that the world would look at as great. He lived a humble life of poverty after the model of his founder St. Francis of Assisi. In this sense, the saints can serve a vital role in our life, namely humiliation. The saints are meant to humiliate us, not in a negative way that leads to discouragement, but in a positive way that leads to true humility. We consider so much that we would like to do or accomplish to be great, then we encounter the life of a profoundly simple man. Fr. Solanus was not great in the standards of the world, but he was great in the eyes of God. My prayer, after this great experience of the relic visit, is to begin thanking God ahead of time for the additional graces that are still to come. I have already heard many stories from parishioners about the impact of this visit and I believe those graces will continue. Fr. Matthew Hood

Canonization Prayer for Blessed Solanus Casey O God, I adore You. I give myself to You. May I be the person You want me to be, and May Your will be done in my life today. I thank You for the gifts You gave Blessed Father Solanus. If it is Your Will, bless us with the Canonization of Father Solanus so that others may imitate and carry on his love for all the poor and suffering of our world. As he joyfully accepted Your divine plans, I ask You, according to Your Will, to hear my prayer for… (your intention) through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

“Blessed be God in all His Designs.”

Ministry Fair This Weekend!

No Bystanders: How to live as a JOYFUL MISSIONARY DISCIPLE! January 20, 2019 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Is 62:1-5 / I Cor 12:4-11 / Jn 2:1-11

Christmas was nearly a month ago. Take a moment to reflect on the gifts you may have received...where are they now? Undoubtedly, some of those gifts have become prized possessions that get used daily. Some of them may have been put away for later use. Some of them may have been returned to the store, or even regifted. Let's be honest, people today don't always receive gifts with an open mind. We want what we want and we get rid of what we don't want. How does this behavior carry over to our acceptance of the gifts we have received from the Holy Spirit? Today's reading from 1 Corinthians tells us that we have each been given a unique gift that we did not choose. Rather, it was chosen specifically for us. What have we done with THAT gift? Is it prized and loved each day? Is it fully alive? Or did we hide it away for "later"? Paul tells us we should use that gift to allow the Holy Spirit to work through us -- but first, we have to accept the gift and get to know it. This comes through prayer and practice! Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and allow Him to make you a little uncomfortable as He encourages you to use your gift in the lives of others! Catholic Diocese of Wichita

Located in the Divine Child Lighthouse stand in the church gathering space. Well-known author, psychologist and priest Fr. Benedict Groeschel recalls some of our most frequently encountered sorrows and griefs: the failure of friends, financial and personal insecurity, the failure of some in the Church, our own inconsistent behaviors and weaknesses, and the death of loved ones. Arise from Darkness examines these painful experiences and shows that we can find solutions in the Gospel and in the lives of saints, heroes, and very brave ordinary people.

Another Look at Abortion By 18 weeks in your mother’s womb, you could swim, somersault, suck your thumb, and even cover your ears if you heard loud music.

From your first moments of existence, you had all the DNA that would determine your sex, facial features, physique, and the color of your skin, hair, and eyes. At 24 days, your heart began beating. By 8 weeks, all your organs were present, and your unique fingerprints were forming. Ultrasounds show that by 18 weeks, you could swim, somersault, suck your thumb, and even cover your ears if you heard loud music. If you’d been born just 23 weeks after conception, your chance of survival would be 50-80 percent; by 25 weeks, it’s over 90 percent, and that’s still months before full-term birth.

Now, if someone takes an innocent person’s life after he or she is born, it’s against the law; just minutes before birth, it’s legal in most states and called abortion. The only real difference is a declaration by the United States Supreme Court in Roe v. W ade (1973).

What the Church Teaches The Church has consistently taught that every human life is precious and worthy of protection. Every intentional abortion is gravely wrong. In April 2018, Pope Francis wrote: “Our defence of the innocent unborn … needs to be clear, firm and passionate, for at stake is the dignity of a human life, which is always sacred and demands love for each person, regardless of his or her stage of development.”

Remember Ricky Ricardo’s Band? As a music buff, I was able to attend last summer’s music ministry at Sacred Heart Parish Hall’s performance of Swing City Big Band. In one word, “amazing.” I would have to venture to say that the closest experience I’ve had in viewing a similar band would be I Love Lucy and her husband, Ricky, conductor extraordinaire. Ricky’s repertoire ran the gamut on lots of music styles or genres including lovely swing music from the 40’s generation in the 1950’s classic show. Indeed, Swing City Big Band is a 16-piece incredibly talented band devoted to swing music, a rare opportunity to be entertained…just for $30 for a ticket. If you haven’t gotten your ticket for the 12th Annual Chili Cha Cha, grab one at the Divine Child or Sacred Heart Parish office. You’ll not only be delighted with shoe-tappin’ music, you’ll savor one or two, or even all four, of the delicious chilis that Chef Alison presents from the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. Then there’s the tantalizing Silent Auction, and new this year, is the vintage glassware donation by the Ford family, from The Pool restaurant, from historic Fair Lane mansion. And, of course, there’s “take-out chili” which you can savor the next day while reminded of the sweet memory of the night before! See you there, on our “Sentimental Journey.” ~ Mindy Delano

The Church does not approach difficult pregnancy decisions with a false “either/or” mentality, pitting mother against child. For example, a baby conceived in rape is not an aggressor deserving death by abortion. She is innocent, like her mother. They both deserve compassionate care and support, not more violence. Abortion doesn’t bring healing or peace, but both can be found in the courageous decision to give birth to the baby. Today, many babies diagnosed prenatally with a disability are aborted. Frightened parents, unsure of their ability to care for such a child, can trust that God gave them this child for a reason. Parents raising children with disabilities often write about the unexpected joys and transformative effect on their families. Even when the disabilities are so severe that the baby is likely to die before or soon after birth, “many parents who carried their children to term say that protecting their baby and honoring his or her natural life, no matter how brief, was profoundly healing.” Very rarely, continuing a pregnancy may put a mother’s life at risk—for example, because of a tubal pregnancy or aggressive uterine cancer. It is morally licit to remove the threat to the mother’s life by removing the cancerous uterus or the fallopian tube where the child implanted, even though it is foreseeable that the child will die as an indirect and unintended result of such surgery. But abortion—a direct and intentional taking of a child’s life—is never morally permissible. www.hopeafterabortion.org www.usccb.org/prolife www.humanlifeaction.org

PERSECUTING CATHOLICS ATTACKS ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOMS RIGHT HERE IN THE GREATEST COUNTRY ON EARTH! People have been persecuted for their religious beliefs since the beginning of time. The devil himself in the form of a serpent persecuted Adam & Eve in the Garden of Eden by the great temptation to disobey God. In the previous century, we witnessed persecution of Jews during World War II and Muslims during the Bosnian Genocide of the 1990’s. Catholics have not been immune to such persecution; hence we have so many martyrs in our faith. However, here in America we like to think we are above that and the land of the free and freedom of religion really means something. But does it? Here are some excerpts and paraphrase from a letter to our membership from our Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “There have been times in our country’s past when uninformed or prejudiced people questioned whether Catholics could be good citizens or honest public servants. Fr. McGivney chose the name “Columbus” for our Order because the discoverer was a Catholic figure from American history who was admired and accepted at the time. Since our Order’s founding in 1882, until the election of Brother Knight John F. Kennedy in 1960, many still held that Catholics were unfit for public office. Throughout that time, the KofC worked to counter such prejudice. Sadly, it seems that in some quarters, this prejudice remains. First, in 2017 a Notre Dame Law professor was deemed unfit for a federal judgeship by a US Senator who feared that ‘the dogma lives loudly within you.’ Now, two more senators have questioned a Brother Knight’s fitness for the federal bench precisely because our Order holds firm to the Church’s teachings on the sanctity of life and marriage.” Attacks like these are not new. Our Order was founded in a time of anti-Catholic bigotry. Knights united against this discrimination then as we do now. For over a century, Knights have stood against the KKK, attempts to ban Catholic education and even published books to promote black and Jewish contributions to history long before the Civil Rights movement. More recently, the Knights supported the Little Sisters of the Poor in their fight for religious liberty and worked with the current and past administrations in Washington to help Christians, Yazidis and Shi’a Muslims who were targets of ISIS. The works of charity that we Knights have completed amount to over a billion dollars and millions of volunteer hours worldwide. We stand with our Church because we believe that its teachings are consistent with reason. The Church’s solid teachings are timeless and transcend changing sentiments of time or place. To put it simply, the position of the KofC is now and always has been, Catholic positions. “We must remember that Article VI of the US Constitution forbids a religious test for public office, and the First Amendment guarantees our free exercise of religion, freedom of association and freedom of speech. Any suggestions that the Order’s adherence to the beliefs of the Catholic Church makes a Brother Knight unfit for public office blatantly violates those constitutional guarantees. Let us continue to express our love of God and neighbor by helping those in need and by standing with our Church, regardless of the popularity of doing so. Let us remember that our ‘Christian witness is to be considered a fundamental obligation.’ …and let us remember that, from our founding, we have embodied the truth that a good Catholic is a good citizen who shows civility and dignity even in the face of prejudice.”

So, although we live in the freest nation on earth, in a land that grants us inalienable rights and religious freedom, we Knights of Columbus must continue to be the sentinels that work to guarantee these rights. If we are not careful my brothers, we will lose our freedoms. Be Catholic, Be Proud and Be a true Knight of Columbus! Are you a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus who would like to join the Patriotic 4th Degree? The above article is a perfect lead into the Patriotic Degree. Right to Life – LIFESPAN Memorial Luminaries Did you know? J anuary 22nd marks the anniversary of the devastating U.S. Supreme Court decision that has led to the deaths of over 60 MILLION babies through abortion in the United States. LIFESPAN is sending 8 busses to Washington, D.C. filled with almost 400 pro-life youth to the National March for Life. On the night of January 21, pro-life homes across the metro Detroit area will light a candle outdoors on front porches and walkways to honor our pre-born brothers and sisters who have lost their lives through abortion due to the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, legalizing abortion on demand. These luminaries remind all living people of the darkness of abortion that has enveloped our country for numerous years. Luminary kits consist of a candle, white paper bag and instructions. If luminaries are not available at your church, please drop by the RTL-LIFESPAN office on or before January 21st (Mon.-Thurs. 10am-2pm). Our office is at: 32540 Schoolcraft, Suite 210 (2nd floor, directly off of the elevator). We accept donations, but there is no charge. For more info: LIFESPAN 734.422.6230 www.miLIFESPAN.org Luminaries to honor the nearly 60 million lives lost to abortion since the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, are available after all the Masses this weekend. Rose Ceremony to honor victims of abortion at Our Lady of Good Counsel January 23rd.

Join Chris Stefanick and REBOOT! Thursday, February 7, 2019; 7:00-9:30 PM National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica Did you know that 80% of young people stop practicing the faith before their 23rd birthday? Most while in college? Instead of grim statistics, just imagine the parish full of people with a much clearer understanding of God’s plan for their lives. Imagine more prayer, more study, and more generosity. Imagine more energy, more inquisitiveness, and more commitment. Imagine lives truly transformed in Christ! This is what REBOOT! is all about. REBOOT! is a high-energy, 2 ½ hour renewal event led by world renowned speaker and TV host Chris Stefanick, that is designed to bring a brand new energy and vitality to your parish community. The event has two parts: (1) It begins with an inspirational, high-energy unpacking of the genius of the heart of the Gospel, revealing its power and real beauty. The experience is fresh and compelling, and is like hearing the Gospel for the first time all over again! People commonly say: “THAT reminded me – all over again – why I ever even wanted to be a Christian, to be a Catholic!” There is a lot of laughter, and there are some real tears. And, (2) It finishes strong with real-life, practical, “can-do” ways of applying the genius of the Gospel in everyday life. From prayer and spirituality, to work, dating, marriage, parenting, health and more: there is no part of a person’s life that will be left untouched. Don’t miss out on this phenomenal opportunity. Register online at: RealLifeCatholic.com/reboot Cost is $25 which includes REBOOT workbook, a special book by Chris Stefanick, and other materials. For more information, call Judy Maten at 313-268-1985.
