Things Above from Fr. Bilot I hope that you have taken, or will take, the opportunity to venerate the relic of Blessed Solanus Casey that is here at Divine Child. The relic will be returned to the Monastery on Tuesday morning. Veneration means to regard someone or something with great respect. The Church honored the work Blessed Casey did in the name of Jesus Christ. The Church also recognizes, after pain-staking research and documentation, that through the intercession of Fr. Solanus Casey, miracles occurred. Thus, having his relic here at Divine Child is a great and holy honor. A relic is a part of a deceased holy person's body or belongings kept as an object of reverence. In our case, the relic is part of a finger of his right hand. Venerating the relic gives one a unique opportunity to pray for healing, guidance and support from one of the members in the Communion of Saints. See the Infant or the parish website for details. Next weekend, Jan 19 & 20, we are holding a Ministry Fair. In the last two months, we've joined others in the Archdiocese of Detroit to learn about our call to mission - to “Unleash the Gospel” in our families and communities. How do we grow in our response to the mission entrusted to us? After the Masses next weekend, fellow parishioners representing the various ministries in the parish will be available to explain their ministry and answer any questions you may have. Many of the ministries do not require a large time commitment. In fact, some are built right into the Mass. For example, being an usher, a greeter, or a Minister of Holy Communion are vital to worship and you’re already at Mass! If we all take time to share our gifts - our time, talent and treasure - we can see the power of the Holy Spirit moving our parish to be a stronger and vital force in the community. Please begin by asking the Holy Spirit how YOU are being called (yes, we are all being called) to serve. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you as you speak to the volunteers at the different ministry stations in the Gathering Space. I truly appreciate your willingness to volunteer and use your gifts and talents for the Glory and Honor of God -- we need you! Finally, during the announcements last weekend, we introduced a wonderful website entitled FORMED. It is a wonderful resource to find movies, videos, theology, spirituality, prayer and catechesis...all pertinent and relevant to the Catholic faith. I strongly recommend you and your family join. There is information on how to sign up in this edition of the Infant. You will find the website extremely helpful and exciting in learning more about the faith and continuing to “Unleash the Gospel” here at Divine Child and in the Archdiocese of Detroit. Know of my prayers. Fr. Jim Bilot

God’s Most Beautiful Gift Baptism is God's most beautiful and magnificent gift....We call it gift, grace, anointing, enlightenment, garment of immortality, bath of rebirth, seal, and most precious gift. It is called gift because it is conferred on those who bring nothing of their own; grace since it is given even to the guilty; Baptism because sin is buried in the water; anointing for it is priestly and royal as are those who are anointed; enlightenment because it radiates light; clothing since it veils our shame; bath because it washes; and seal as it is our guard and the sign of God's Lordship. St. Gregory of Nazianzus On the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, it is important to take the time to reflect on our own baptism and what St. Gregory of Nazianzus calls “God’s most beautiful and magnificent gift.” Our own baptism should be considered the most important day of our life. It is the moment that we are adopted as beloved sons and daughters of the Father, we are configured to Jesus Christ and His passion, death and resurrection, and we are filled with the anointing of the Holy Spirit. We are welcomed into God’s family, the Church, and forgiven of all our sins. There is an important tradition of remembering the date of your baptism and celebrating it in a special way each year. If you do not know the date of your baptism, you can easily contact your parish of baptism to request a new baptismal certificate. The Church offers the ability to receive a plenary indulgence on the anniversary of our baptism if we renew our baptismal promises on that day. A plenary indulgence is the full remission of the temporal punishments of sin, essentially time in purgatory. To receive a plenary indulgence on the anniversary of our baptism, you will need to fulfill the regular requirements for a plenary indulgence which include receiving communion, sacramental confession, and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father. You can fulfill these requirements before, during or after the anniversary date. Then, on the day of your baptism, in thanksgiving to God for the beautiful gift that has been given, you can renew your baptismal promises. Here is a copy of the renewal of baptismal promises that you could use: V. Do you reject sin, so as to live in the freedom of God’s children? R. I do. V. Do you reject the glamor of evil and refuse to be mastered by sin? R. I do. V. Do you reject Satan, father of sin and prince of darkness? R. I do. V. Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth? R. I do. V. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died, and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father? R. I do.

V. Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting? R. I do. V. This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church. We are proud to profess it in Christ Jesus our Lord. R. Amen. Fr. Matthew Hood

Fr. Solanus Casey served at St. Bonaventure Monastery in Detroit. He became known as the doorkeeper who would provide soup for the hungry, a healing touch to the ill, and wise and compassionate counsel to the troubled. He spent his life in service to people, whether Catholic, non-Catholic, nonChristian or atheist, and encouraged everyone to “foster confidence in God and thank Him ahead of time.”

Exodus 90 is a challenging 90-day period of prayer and asceticism, supported by a fraternity of 5-7 likeminded men that will begin this January here at Divine Child. The journey of Exodus 90 is centered around 4 Pillars.

90 DAYS The 90-day benchmark is not an arbitrary number; it is essential for freedom. That’s the period it takes to re-learn the joy and satisfaction of selfmastery and freedom. Most men consider the 90-day period of purification a manly challenge, something that may have been missing in their lives for a long time. In addition, researchers have found that it takes about 90 days – the length of many rehabilitation models, including AA – for the brain to “reset” itself. Interestingly enough, people in recovery have known this saying forever “90 meetings in 90 days” because when the brain is engaged in a habit for 90 days it becomes easier to do. After Exodus 90, what was once difficult and a challenge, becomes a new way of life.

PRAYER Men will adopt the discipline of daily prayer – taking on the story of the Israelites journeying from the slavery of sin into the freedom of the promised land. With a daily passage from the book of Exodus and a corresponding, written meditation, as well as communal prayer with other men from Divine Child. ASCETICISM Learning to deny themselves, Exodus 90 men take up their cross, and learn to offer up cold showers, fasting from all alcohol, sweets, eating between meals, television and movies, televised sports, and more. In emptying themselves of modern comfort, noise and vice, men dispose themselves greatly to the voice and presence of God in their lives.

FRATERNITY Men band together, in groups of four or more, for encouragement and accountability as well as to share difficulties and challenges through the 90 days. Weekly fraternity meetings provide the context for a virtuous brotherhood, serving to foster greater communion and friendship within, and after, the 90 days.

Join the men of Divine Child in persevering through 90 days of prayer for our families, our Church, and for our own relationship with the Lord. Men will be separated into age groups (17+) and will meet once a week in the Divine Child Gathering Space. Materials can be purchased at exodus90.com.

An informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 15th @ 8 pm in the Divine Child gathering space. If interested in joining, please email: dcmen90@gmail.com Please provide your name, age and phone number.

Ministry Fair Next Weekend!

No Bystanders: How to live as a JOYFUL MISSIONARY DISCIPLE! In the last two months, we’ve joined others in the Archdioceses of Detroit to learn about our call to mission: to Unleash the Gospel in our family and community. Every baptized person, according to their gifts and state in life, is essential for this mission to be fulfilled. There can be no bystanders. How do you get started or grow more fully in this mission? One way is to participate in the life of the Church by serving in parish ministry. After each Mass January 19 & 20, we will hold a Divine Child Ministry Fair. Your fellow parishioners, who represent various ministries, will be available to explain their ministry and answer your questions. Some of the ministries include: Eucharistic Ministers of Holy Communion, Readers, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Sacristans, Fiber Arts Ministry, Ushers, Music Ministry, New Parishioner Welcome Ministry, Knights of Columbus. Begin by asking the Holy Spirit how you are being called to serve. To assist in your discernment, please pray with the readings from this Sunday’s Mass, and consider the reflection below. January 13, 2019 The Baptism of the Lord Is 42:1-4, 6-7 / Acts 10:34-38 / Lk 3:15-16, 21-22 Today's first reading from Isaiah clearly speaks of the coming of Jesus Christ, but take a moment to consider another possibility. What if this passage was referring to YOU? What if the Lord God said, "Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased," and he was talking about YOU?! Are you living and giving in a way that is worthy of that description? Do you believe that you are valued that much by your Creator? In today's Gospel, we see the Baptism of Jesus -- the beginning of his public ministry. You, too, are called into that public ministry by virtue of your own baptism. How are you, as a steward of God's gifts, serving God and one another? Are you intentional in your discipleship as a missionary? Do you anticipate and meet the needs of others? Do you make a point to share the Gospel through your words and actions? Strive to live a life that will cause God to say, "You are my beloved Son/Daughter; with you I am well pleased." Thank you, Divine Child parishioners!!! We were able to help 41 individual families with food baskets this year. The food just multiplied and we were able to give the excess to the inner-city parishes that come to pick up the gifts that were also donated by our generous parishioners! It is so heartwarming to be involved with such a generous parish family. You make the Christian Service Projects very fulfilling. I am sure God is well-pleased. Mary Tomilo - Christian Service Commission “The blessing of the Lord be upon you”

Congratulations to Gabriella Ann Boyle who received the Sacrament of Baptism on December 2, 2018. Gabriella is the daughter of Andrew Boyle ‘07 and Marie (Stawasz) Boyle ‘07. Her Godparents are Bethany Stawasz ‘04 and Daniel Boyle ‘05. God bless the Boyle Family! If you have a photo you would like to share with our Divine Child Parish celebrating a Sacrament, i.e. Baptism, Wedding, 1st Holy Communion, Confirmation, we would love to hear from you. Please email it to: marilyn@divinechild.org.

Thanks to all the volunteers that helped with the sorting, packing and loading of all the food we received. This included junior high and high school students and many parishioners. This endeavor would not be possible without all of you. Also thanks to the grade school class that made cards to add to the baskets. They gave it a personal touch. And a very special thank you to Marc Wolney from our Operations Department, who set-up and cleaned-up for all of us. We also received 40 turkeys from Wolverine Packing Co. They are with us every year. Thank you and God bless you all! Christian Service Commission

Christmas Mass and Celebration at Heartland Healthcare

Top Hat is here! It’s considered a major portion of fund-raising for our Annual Chili Cha Cha. Proceeds are split 50/50 with the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, so it is doubly important to beef up our coffers. We have lofty goals…we are trying to surpass last year’s results which were $3500. You would roll your eyes if you knew our goal. So, instead, at the end of our campaign, we will certainly let you know the results, compared to last year. You might be interested, however, on how we arrived at our goal. Of course, we didn’t base it on actuarial science. That would be silly. We based it on “a wing and a prayer.” Give from your heart. You can’t take it with you… SVdP prays for blessings upon our contributors. Thank you for your continued loyalty to our cause and God Bless. ~ Mindy Delano

FAITH IN ACTION! CATHOLIC CITIZENSHIP ESSAY CONTEST CONSECRATION TO THE HOLY FAMILY

It seems so long ago! Last year before school let out for Christmas Vacation, Foley Family Community Director Frank Paolini presented three DCES students with a cash prize of $50 for their winning essays. The Knights of Columbus sponsors an essay contest each year. Council winners progress to state competition and then to international competition. The theme for this year’s essay was “How does your family keep its Catholic Faith in Action.” Over 120 students from DCES grades 6-8 submitted essays. Thanks to Frank Paolini and his committee of Foley Knights, Jim Bell, Larry Laliberte, Mike Oleski, Giorgio Bertucci, Dan Czeski and Foley Wives Angela Paolini and Donna Czeski who spent hour s objectively gr ading all of the essays. Frank presented the certificates and cash prize to 6th Grader Brian Pieknik, 7th Grader Jillian Oleski and 8th Grader Stephen Balash. It was so promising to read all of the entries and how families are working to put their Faith in Action through the work they do in their everyday lives. These Faith in Action Programs that the Knights sponsor parallel beautifully with the Archdiocese’s Unleash the Gospel initiative to spread our faith among others by example! Thank you to all the parishioners of Divine Child who unknowingly helped the Knights of Columbus with another Faith in Action program. A couple weeks ago Divine Child families recited a prayer of Consecration to the Holy Family during weekend Masses. It was a beautiful reminder to mothers, fathers, grandparents and children of all ages that we need the help and guidance of the Holy Family as we go thru life surrounded by secular influences every day. Together we pray that parishioners can find peace, joy and love within their own families, within our Divine Child community and beyond.

That weekend, members of Foley Council were asked to wear their Bishop Foley polo shirts to the Mass they attended. We wanted to show our parish community who among us are Foley Knights of Columbus. You may have seen us in the pews, up in the choir loft, serving as Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist or as an usher. These Foley men wore their shirts proudly, we are happy to serve our parish! We hope it may have inspired you to think about becoming a Foley Knight. Let us help you become a stronger Catholic man, a better husband, father and son by working together to put our Faith in Action. Are you a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus that would like to join the Patriotic 4th Degree? th There is a 4 Degree Exemplification coming up on March 2nd. To get your paperwork in and get more information contact GK Dominic Raona at 313-212-1835. IF YOU ARE NOT YET A FOLEY KNIGHT – WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

Knights will be available after all weekend Masses January 19 th and 20th for the Parish Ministry Fair. We are looking for a few good Catholic men who want to be a part of our mission. Right to Life – LIFESPAN

Shout Out Your Adoption

Your voice and action is needed! Many social media sites are encouraging women to “shout out” their positive feelings they have about an abortion decision. They want to make abortion the “in” thing, the “cool” thing. There is something that can have an even louder voice than theirs---we propose that you SHOUT OUT YOUR ADOPTION! Each of us know someone who has adopted, been adopted, is waiting to adopt or is longing to adopt. The joy that comes from adoption should be shouted from the roof top! Use your voice on social media to let the world know that Adoption Is The Loving Option by using the hashtags #shoutyouradoption, #milifespan, and #generationtruth! For more info: LIFESPAN 734.422.6230

www.miLIFESPAN.org

Luminaries to honor the nearly 60 million lives lost to abortion since the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, are available! Find them in your church or come to our office!!!

Love vs. Lust: Fulfilling Our Desires – Theology on Tap Monday, January 14 | 7-8:30pm | Royal Oak Taphouse in Royal Oak. We long for intimacy, to love and be loved by another completely. The great Pope St. John Paul II left us a beautiful understanding of the Church’s teaching on our bodies, sexuality and love in his Theology of the Body. Join us for this Theology on Tap as Michelle Piccolo explores this teaching to understand even better the great difference between the experience of lust that wounds us, and the beautiful experience of love and intimacy God has planned for us. God has a perfect, fulfilling plan for you. Come learn about it.

Unleash the Gospel is now on social media, making it easier for you to join the movement to renew our world, our region, and our Church. Remember, you have a vital role to play in the missionary transformation of our Church! Follow @UTGDetroit on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter for stories, inspiration, and encouragement as we work to Unleash the Gospel in bold and creative ways. A new logo for Unleash the Gospel features an open door — a symbol of our call to imitate Blessed Solanus Casey and live out radical hospitality in our parishes and families. Your CSA gifts support the innovative initiatives for Archbishop Allen Vigneron’s pastoral letter, Unleash the Gospel. Pilgrimage to Vietnam with Fr. John Vandenaker CC (May 15-28th, 2019). Discover the natural beauty, culture, and faith of this exotic land and her many Catholic saints and martyrs. An Information meeting with Fr. John will take place on Sun. Jan. 27th at 12:00 noon in the hall of St. Maurice church in Ottawa. To view the Pilgrimage Brochure please go online at https://www.companionscross.org/ upcoming-events.

If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home and give all that I have to charity, but do not show love to my family, it profits me nothing.

If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls, but do not show love to my family, I'm just another decorator. If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do not show love to my family, I'm just another cook.

If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes, attend a myriad of holiday parties and sing in the choir's cantata but do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point. Love stops the cooking to hug the child. Love sets aside the decorating to kiss your spouse. Love is kind, though harried and tired. Love doesn't envy another's home that has coordinated Christmas china and table linens.

Kerygma Nights: Does your life feel, well, messy? Come learn what the Gospel reveals - that you don't have to walk it alone. God really does have big plans for you, ...that despite sin and struggle in our lives... we can be fulfilled. Join us for a night of answers to some of the big questions we all have, as we share the core of what the Gospel reveals through short talks, discussion and Q&A with others who are asking the same questions as you are. Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27 Jolly Pumpkin - Royal Oak 7:00 - 8:30 (Wed.) Jan. 28, Feb. 4, 11, 18 Sacred Heart - Dearborn 7:00 - 8:30 (Mon.) Jan. 22, 29, Feb. 5, 12 Shrine of the Little Flower 7:00 - 8:30 (Tues.) Spanish

Love doesn't yell at the kids to get out of the way, but is thankful they are there to be in the way. Love doesn't give only to those who are able to give in return, but rejoices in giving to those who can't. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. Video games will break, pearl necklaces will be lost, golf clubs will rust... But giving the gift of love will endure.

Council of Catholic Women Meeting will be held on Sat. Jan. 19, 2019 at St. Albert the Great Parish in Dearborn Hts. Sign-in begins at 9:30. Speaker from the Parishioners 4 Priests ministry. For further information, contact Bernadine at 313-846-8605.
