We come, seeking the Christ Child and the God of all who loves us more than we can measure.

Songs — — arr. Michael Lawrence — arr. Ed Hogan — arr. Dan Goeller

Scripture — Seeing was believing. The shepherds told everyone they met what the angels had said about this child. All who heard the shepherds were impressed. Mary kept all these things to herself, holding them dear, deep within herself. The shepherds returned and let loose, glorifying and praising God for everything they had heard and seen. It turned out exactly the way they'd been told!

Worship Notes Participants: Raj Attiken, the President of the Ohio Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, presents today’s sermon on the Miracles of Christmas. Kamil Čák is a chaplain at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. Donna Hedrick and Steve Divnick read today’s scripture lesson and present the Prayers of the People. Christina Marie England, daughter of Jeff and Lori England, is being baptized today by Pastor Brendon Prutzman. Her friend, Jessica Webster, granddaughter of Pastor Hazel Burns, wrote the song, and is singing it as part of Christina’s baptism. Christina’s grandparents, Melvin and Nancy England, aunt and cousins share in the occasion. Olivia Grace Čák, new baby daughter of Kamil and Loretta Čák, is being dedicated to the Lord by Kamil’s brother, Casba Čák, an ordained minister in Prague, Czesch Republic, via an Internet connection (thanks to Daniel Udrea). Casba’s wife, Marcela, from the Czech Republic, and Kamil’s mother, Katarina and sister, Katka, from Slovakia, are joining us via Internet connection. Here at Kettering with Olivia are her grandparents, Martha Jean & Ron Hoehn, Steve Divnick & Donna Hedrick, aunt, Sandra Divnick, and other extended family.

Music: The music for today’s service includes Christmas carols that have been arranged for church orchestra under the direction of Donald Huff, who is currently the school music representative for McCutcheon Music. Kettering Church’s “Praise Orchestra” is similar to an ensemble like the Cincinnati Pop’s Orchestra compared to the Cincinnati Symphony in that it contains many of the same players, but in different size sections, such as a large percussion section, a guitar part, played today by Dayton’s own highly-recognized guitar artist, Jim McCutcheon, and duo pianos played by Martha Jean Hoehn, and Jerry Taylor. The music is much more rhythmic than typical orchestra/band music and is the type of ensemble that records the sound tracks used today by many vocal artists. As we gather for worship we hear settings of three Christmas carols: an old English folk song wishing us good health, solos by Kristan Huff, flute; Ryan Babienco, alto sax; Danny was originally composed in 1857 for a Christmas pageant at the General Udrea, trombone. was a 15th century French Carol. Theological Seminary in New York City; and Today we hear these melodies set to new harmonies by American composers. Ashley Creech, soprano, a recent graduate of Southern Adventist University, sings, composed by Ben Glover and Jason Ingram and made popular by contemporary Christian vocalist, Joy Williams. She is accompanied by her father, Dale Creech, a Dayton attorney who serves on our finance committee. also works for

is heard in an arrangement by Ed Hogan, who is a major American Band composer who which is the premier music-writing software for computers.

is heard in an arrangement by Dan Goeller, a young American composer, who writes for big names like Amy Grant, Michael W Smith, Point of Grace, among others. His music has the distinction of including many different styles of music culture. one of the oldest of the Christmas carols, is heard today in a setting by Michael Lawrence whose music is published here in Dayton, Ohio.

NEXT WEEK – January 3, 2009 – Communion Dr. Karl Haffner, our senior pastor will present a New Year’s sermon and lead us in a full communion service complete with a Foot Washing service. Music by a vocal ensemble, Josh Wheeker, tenor, and organ.
