Worship Notes: Participants: Jerry Mahn, resident dean for Kettering College of Medical Arts, presents today’s sermon on the cross. Elliot Smith, our pastor for outreach, young adult and taskforce ministries, hosts today’s service and tells the children’s story. Jessica Blaza, who reads today’s scripture lesson, is a sophomore at Wright State University taking a double major of nursing/pre-med, and music performance (clarinet). J. J. Blaza, a senior at Wright State University graduating with a BS in biology/pre-med, presents the prayers of the people. Jerry Taylor, our minister of worship and music, is the organist for today’s service. Bradyn James Davis, is the son of Ryan and Breezy Davis, born April 9, 2009. They moved to Dayton in June of 2008 from central California. Ryan is a physical education teacher at the Horizon Science Academy in north Dayton, Breezy is a “stay at home” mom. “Brady” is being dedicated to the Lord today by Pastor Elliot Smith. Grandparents have come to share this special occasion. MUSIC: As we gather for worship the Kettering Brass, now under the direction of Glenn Hawkins, SVA’s band and instrumental teacher, plays the This piece was written by Gottfried Reiche (1667 -1734), who was best known as Johann Sebastian Bach's chief trumpeter at Leipzig. is a setting of Hymn 191 by Paul Curnow, who was born and educated in Michigan, and now teaches at the University of Southern California. (Hymn 362) was originally a hymn of 12 stanzas written as a processional for a festival in Winchester Cathedral by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. The tune, Crucifer (Crossbearing) was composed for these words by Sydney Nicholson, who was the organist at Westminster Abbey. is one of the early pieces of the Contemporary Christian Music era, written in 1989 by Graham Kendrick, who is a British contemporary worship leader. The arrangement heard today for brass is by California composer, Paul Curnow. is from Felix Mendelssohn’s ( ) for eight voices a cappella, Op.79. They were written in the last year of Mendelssohn’s life during a great outpouring of sacred music by this composer for the church at Leipzig. (Hymn 159) both words and music for this very popular hymn were written in 1913 by George Bennard, a Methodist minister in Michigan. Today we will sing stanzas 1 and 3 a cappella led by Jerry Mahn. (Hymn 171) was written in French by Edmond Budry for the YMCA Hymn Book. It was first printed in English in 1923 and published in The music was written by George Handel for his oratorio, “Joshua”, and then adapted for his oratorio, “Judas Maccabeus”. The words were written for this tune. As the Closing Voluntary, the Kettering Brass will play a setting of this hymn by S. Drummond Wolfe.

Spring Choir Festival — Our own church choir will join with the Christ Church Festival Choir for a special two-choir program with two performances: Saturday, April 24, 5 p.m., in our sanctuary and Sunday, April 25, 3 p.m., at Christ United Methodist Church (3440 Shroyer Road, Kettering). This will be a good opportunity to come and bring a friend. National Volunteer Week — April 18-24, 2010, the theme this year is “Celebrating People in Action.” The week is designated as a time to recognize those who have already made volunteerism a part of their lives and to encourage others to become involved as volunteers. Volunteers work together to enrich our community. Let’s celebrate their contributions! Mount Vernon Academy Alumni Weekend — April 23-25, Carol Myers ‘60 will be our Sabbath worship hour speaker.
