ditor’s Note • Welcome to Spring Incubator readers! When I first decided to create the magazine division of The Incubator™ I had the idea of how I wanted things to pan out but of course, as in any new “ad-venture” you never know exactly how things will end up. I’m happy to say, this project is turning out to be one of my best and most enjoyable endeavors. I knew the scope of “The Arts” was one of many possibilities but I never imagined the depth. We’re on a wonderful ride.

a world of creation... FLYING SOLO: The opportunities and challenges presented to the Solitary Art Historian in a small college by Jeremy Miller This stimulating panel was presented at caa and chaired by Laura J. crary of Presbyterian college and William ganis of Wells college. Three well-crafted papers addressed aspects of teaching art history at a college with no art history department per se, but in which art history is an important component of education. Lisa Deboer of Westmont college presented her paper “curricular and Pedagogical Strategies for Solo Flyers in Studio Departments” which explored potential advantages and problems of more closely aligning art history with studio art instruction. Taking as her point of departure the James elkins article “Parallel art history/Studio Program” (art Journal, Vol. 54, Fall 1995), Deboer raised the possibility of challenging the severe academic split between the two types of instruction, suggesting there are potential benefits of greater crossover between studio and art history departments. In “no art historian Is an Island” presented by amy Von Lintel of West Texas a&M university, the hybrid nature of art history as a discipline was elegantly juxtaposed to what the author referred to as the “realities of the many headed hydra”, referring to the diversity of responsibilities one takes on as an art historian in a small department. one particularly prescient strategy presented by Von Lintel

was to create a more interdisciplinary experience for her students through collaborative teaching. by inviting carefully selected guest lecturers from other departments at her university to her classes, Von Lintel not only vastly expands the knowledge base of her classroom, she employs a pedagogical strategy which reinforces the value of deep learning and fosterers greater student focus. Furthermore, her collaboration with the other faculty at her college undoubtedly serves as a model for successful collaboration and specialization for her students, stressing the nature of scholarship as a shared enterprise. The third and final paper was presented by gregory gilbert of Knox college and titled “The Solitary art historian in a Liberal arts college: Strategies for aligning Faculty and Student research”. after some years of struggling to find time for his scholarly duties beyond the classroom, gilbert decided to more explicitly integrate his ongoing scholarly work into his courses. rather than employing the common strategy of teaching his dissertation, gilbert instead began to use his courses to both share and expand his research area through the vehicle of his coursework with students. he was able to do this by proposing seminar themes, term paper topics, and student research areas more closely related to his area of focus. In doing so gilbert found that he was able to more effectively guide students at all areas of research and course projects. Read more at www.incmagonline.com

St. Vincent: “Cheerleader” Hiro Murai talks about turning Annie Clark into a Godzilla-sized museum piece. By Jenn Pelly

The video’s uncanny scaling was inspired largely by the australian sculptor ron Mueck, who recreates hyperreal human bodies on a colossal scale. constructed with silicon, fiberglass, and minute detail, the sculptures are startlingly lifelike, and “seem to embody the challenges and perils of the human condition,” according to The New York Times. Like the video, Mueck’s sculptures are tense, existential, and thoughtprovoking. Murai was in L.a., where the video was shot in December, when we chatted about Mueck, oldschool Godzilla techniques, and how his personal St. Vincent fandom inspired the video.

St. Vincent’s annie clark not only stars in her videos, but commands them, with an on-screen aura to match the sharp, beguiling mood of her high-brow guitar pop. Following suit, the recent clip for Strange Mercy single “cheerleader”, directed by hiro Murai, pictures a monster-sized clark tied to the center of a gallery space, surrounded by engrossed museum goers. When clark attempts to escape their gaze, her body slowly disintegrates. The clip leaves much open for interpretation, yet also suggests the revolutionary fury that comes with a narrative of liberation.

Pitchfork: This clip has the same unsettling feeling of other St. Vincent videos. Was the concept a collaborative effort? hiro Murai: It was my concept, but that uncanny quality came from the fact that I was a fan to begin with. To me, the entire video incorporates aspects of the videos she’s put out in the past, and understands who she is as a musician. I always saw her as a really ornate layer cake, but filled with knives. So the idea of scaling a fragile porcelain figure into the size of something almost ominous was interesting to me. her performance and general aura on camera is very indicative of her music. Made Films is a flourishing company that primarily focuses on production videos and photography. Specializing in music videos, we have gradually expanded to commercials, event coverage, video intros, and photography. Made Films originally started out as big Mind Tv in 2006 as a promotions company for clubs and businesses. using resourceful marketing strategies and a street team we helped these business grow and increase their clientele. In 2008, we decided to take our business to the next level and started using videos on YouTube to help businesses and on the artists. In doing so I discovered a hidden passion within me. The more I learned about video production and editing the more it pulled me in. our company started receiving even more attention the further the videos progressed including from a local group, Dollar Shine. having never done a music video before I suppressed my fears and began shooting for them. after a week of shooting and editing the footage I was truly amazed with what I had created. They loved it and so did I. of course looking back now I am proud by how far the quality and my editing have come but I had found my calling. This video was just a taste of what was to come. Made Films began taking off. We started booking weekly videos and our clientele and fan base began to increase. I also teamed up with other known

video directors such as Mr. Irok and Kid ray to shoot a video for a well known local artist Kyle Lee. Kyle Lee's "body bag" was a huge success. It even earned a nomination for Music Video of the Year by The San antonio Music awards. In 2011 we relocated to the rio grande Valley and signed with our first label "Doe Pheens entertainment." The video creativity we have been given with Doe Pheens has opened the door for so many more artists such as Fade Dogg and the Tone city Family, Dope house, boss hogg outlawz, chamillitary, J-rocc, Young Thugz, Swisha house and many more to come. Artist: Nine Lashes Album: World We View Label: Tooth & nail release: Feb. 14, 2012 reviewed by: Sara Walz hailing from birmingham, alabama the five-piece band just released their debut album, World We View, on Tooth & nail with producers aaron Sprinkle and Trevor Mcnevan. The input of Trevor Mcnevan is undeniable, upon first listen I thought, “This sounds like Phenomenon-era Thousand Foot Krutch,” but that’s not to say they are a carbon copy of the veteran rock group. nine Lashes holds their own in the man-rock arena going back and forth on the album between heavy guitars and double bass to ballads crying out “…so my god fill this space that’s left in me.” The album keeps from getting too static by the addition of electronic tracks, strings and includes an appearance by Demon hunter screamer, ryan clark, on the song “our Darkest Day.” World We View closes with an almost completely acoustic track that highlights lead singer, Jeremy Dunn’s, vocals and is a clean way to close out a highly charged album. Lyrically, nine Lashes gets it right. They say on their Facebook page that “they have determined in their hearts to bring a message of hope to the hopeless purpose to the lost” and their lyrics do not shy away from that mission. Musically, however, it feels like I have heard it before. It is a strong debut album and definitely worth a listen but if I heard one of their songs on the radio I am not sure I would be able to distinguish them from most other hard rock acts. 3 out of 5 Stars

lvin Ailey (January 5, 1931 - DeA cember 1, 1989) was an American choreographer and activist who

founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New york. Ailey is credited with popularizing modern dance and revolutionizing AfricanAmerican participation in 20th century concert dance. His company gained the nickname "Cultural Ambassador to the World" because of its extensive international touring. Ailey's choreographic masterpiece revelations is believed to be the best known and most often seen modern dance performance. Ailey received the Kennedy Center Honors in 1988, just one year before his death. Alvin Ailey’s experiences of life in the rural south would later inspire some of Ailey’s most memorable works. At age 12, he moved with his mother to Los Angeles, where he was introduced to dance by performances of the Ballet russe de Monte Carlo and the Katherine Dunham Dance Company. began with an introduction to Lester Horton’s classes by his friend, Carmen de Lavallade. Horton, the founder of the first racially integrated dance company in the United states, became a mentor for Mr. Ailey as he embarked on his professional career. After Horton’s death in 1953, Mr. Ailey became director of the Lester Horton Dance Theater and began to choreograph his own works. In 1954, he was invited to dance in the Broadway musical House of Flowers. Mr. Ailey studied dance with Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Charles Weidman, Hanya Holm and Karel shook and also took acting classes with stella Adler. In 1958, he founded Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater to carry out his vision of a company dedicated to enriching the American modern dance heritage and preserving the uniqueness of the African-American cultural experience. He established the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center (now The Ailey school) in 1969 and formed the Alvin Ailey repertory Ensemble (now Ailey II) in 1974.

Mr. Ailey was a pioneer of Arts In Education programs, particularly those benefiting underserved communities. Throughout his lifetime, he was awarded numerous honorary doctoral degrees, NAACP’s spingarn Award, the United Nations Peace Medal, the Dance Magazine Award, the Capezio Award and the samuel H. scripps American Dance Festival Award. In 1988, he received the Kennedy Center Honor in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to American culture. When Mr. Ailey died on December 1, 1989, The New york Times said of him, “you didn’t need to have known [him] personally to have been touched by his humanity, enthusiasm and exuberance and his courageous stand for multi-racial brotherhood.” Read more at www.incmagonline.com

How Promotional Viral Videos Infect Movie Viewers (NewsUSA) - The film industry has the ability to adapt like no other, weaving social media and viral videos into marketing campaigns with ease and -- more importantly -- success by way of dollar signs. Most of Hollywood's social media marketing is meant to promote new films, new trailers and create overall hype, but viral media can go beyond that. Paramount Studio used Facebook and Eventful to determine what specific cities had an interest in "Paranormal Activity." The horror flick had a budget of less than $15,000, yet it grossed more than $150 million in theaters because potential fans requested enough local screenings for it to be widely released. Social media is viral in nature, and the added use of sites like YouTube and Reddit just means videos and clips infect more viewers. "You can target interest, advertise new releases and start an Internet buzz to increase ticket sales. Disney, Pixar and Twentieth Century Fox have used viral video campaigns for 'Toy Story 3' and 'Rise of the Planet of the

Apes.' The 'Ape With AK-47' YouTube video was a part of a promotional series for the new film featuring 'real apes.' It got over 20 million views! Now talk about starting an online conversation," says Peter Hoffman, CEO of Seven Arts Entertainment, another studio highlighting its latest release on Facebook. Actresses Sheena Lee and Simona Fusco, from the hit-comedy, "The Pool Boys," turned-up the heat on Facebook when they did an online Q&A session just before Valentine's Day. Fans got to ask questions and the ladies answered in real-time and invited their fans to join in the conversation. The chat session is in advance of the upcoming release of "The Pool Boys" on HBO this spring. The actresses created their own YouTube video clips of them hanging by their pool and on the way to the gym, and had so much fun.
