Letter from the Editor I thought I was prepared for senior year. For the most part, I was. I know I’m going to be a high school history teacher. It’ll be great. But for all the things I know, nothing could have prepared me for the role of editor in chief of the newspaper.

I’ve been on staff for my entire high school career and worked with many different types of journalists, and with all of that, I can safely say this staff is by far my favorite.

We can all joke around together, but also get work done when needed while keeping a mainly stress-free environment, minus trying to get our somewhat weekly

publication the “Stall Street Journal” into every bathroom stall in the school with three minutes left in class.

Nothing could stop this staff’s desire to work and have content, no matter what it is. We’ve had the best coverage of our theater department in the years I’ve been here, but also had lackluster football coverage, because what else could we add that wasn’t being covered by the Canyon Courier? The team had a perfect regular season, but our staff focused on different stories.

We had one SSJ that we all hated because it lacked the love and care put into

the other ones We took that hiccup and grew from it.

Having a high point and a low point to work off gave us a ballpark, and we wanted to push our standards making the SSJ’s better than the last.

Three out of the five of us were gone for a week for the National Journalism Convention in Washington D.C. the week before Thanksgiving, and that week really cemented the friendships between us and forged new ones with other kids in our media program.

Because of that week, the three of us began to really get to know each other and are now able to work like a well-oiled machine due

to how well we understand each other.

I went into this year not knowing how to be an editor. I felt like a fish out of water and like I didn’t deserve to be the editor. All I knew was InDesign and how to write reviews, but my staff has challenged me to be the editor they need, and I hope I can fulfill that need for my friends on the Lobo Legend staff.

Student journalists travel to Washington DC

Washington DC. A melting pot of our nation’s greatest minds, politicians, and journalists… and for the week of November 19th? 10 CHS students.

This group of student journalists, videographers, and yearbook members attended the National Journalism Convention for a week of competitions, workshops, and sightseeing.

“I think that traveling to any convention is the best way to show students something beyond the bounds of room A201,” Student Media teacher, Leslie Thompson said.

Conifer’s small media program comprised 10 of the 6,000 students present at the convention, but this fact did not intimidate students.

“This was only my second national convention, and I confess it took me four years to recover from the last one,” Thompson said. “This one went so well that I’ve already got the travel documents prepared for next fall’s convention!”

there are other people out there who get it- like we’re not the only people who are doing this,” the newspaper editor, Riley Patton said.

Despite the media programs’ small size, students excelled in competition.

“My proudest moment was when 75% of the students who entered competitions made it to the national stage,” Thompson said.

In sports writing Graciela Fischer, sophomore, took Honorable Mention.

“I’ve actually never really written a sports story, so I was kind of nervous,” Fischer said.

Now, she’s found her stride, and next semester she will report on sporting events for the school.

The convention was about more than education, though.

“I had some of the best times I’ve had in my entire life,” junior newspaper editor, Zoe Watts said. The team connected quickly, even though most members had not collaborated with one another prior to the trip.

“Eating, sleeping, and existing together for a week forces everyone to bond,” Patton said.

Yesterday I Asked You… In the modern world today, people are trampling over themselves to get some of the spotlight.

However, you don’t need to fight for the spotlight; you just need to know when to sit back and let creativity drive itself to fame.

Jack Douglass, known online as his personality as jacksfilms, has acclaimed 4.7 million subscribers (as of 12/3/19) in the 13 years he’s been on YouTube.

His most popular series, Yesterday I Asked You or YIAY, has expanded to

nearly 500 episodes since February of 2015 and most of his fanbase participates in the challenges. Several miniseries have stemmed from YIAY including Roses are Red, where users write “Roses are red” poems, Fake Facts, where users create fake news facts and Fix Your…. Examples of the Fix Your… series are “Fix Your Pix” and “Fix Your Twitter Bios.”

But by far, his most famous miniseries, with 8 episodes, is fixing and creating flags.

I have an adoration for flags and vexillology, the study of flags. So when I heard that one of Jack’s challenges was to design a flag for YIAY, I jumped on the opportunity. The rules were that it needed to have the word YIAY, and that it needed the color scheme of YIAY on it. I decided on a simple four-bar flag with the words “YESTERDAY I ASKED YOU” on it.

The flag was accepted.

I couldn’t believe my eyes. A simple little design, something that wasn’t even my best work, shown to over 4 million people on the Internet? I was beyond ecstatic.

He said the flag was simple and elegant, and that it kept the color scheme in mind and that it got the point of YIAY across. And I didn’t do anything except let my creativity run loose.

Special Ed. and Regular Classes By. Hunter Sanders

Being one of the students in the Special Ed. Program has been interesting and I was a part of it for middle school too. But I was in my own classes without the students, and the same thing is happening for high school. I’m going to talk about my experience with being in the Special Ed. Program and being in regular classes at the same time.

In West Jeff Middle School I was put into a classroom that was for kids with disabilities, they had PARA’s and a teacher, and every day they are in the classroom to learn and do subjects like math

and reading. A PARA is short for Paraprofessional Educator. They are classroom assistants that help the students with learning. The students and PARA’s go to regular classes like P.E. and social studies. I was a part of all of that and it was pretty fun. I did go to regular classes on my own and I’ve met some of the other students that were in the classroom and became friends with them.

After middle school, me and most of the students that I knew from the classroom went to Conifer High and was put into a classroom similar to middle school called

The Special Ed. Program.

Freshman year was pretty easy because I had PARA’s to help me, but I knew it was going to get harder as the years went by, and it did.

By junior year, I was going to classes by myself without anyone going with me and it was going well.

Senior year is going pretty good but it’s becoming stressful for me and I know it’s going to be more stressful down the line, but it won’t stop me doing what I love most.

Catch a Falling Star Review Good for middle school

GENERAL SUMMARY Carter Moon is your typical small town girl who dreams of a bigger life. Her best friend is estatic when it’s announced that a movie is going to be filmed in their corner of the world, but Carter doesn’t really care, even when the studio hires her family’s restraunt to cater for the cast and crew.

Adam Jakes is the star (and her best friend’s lifelong crush) that used to be a child star before multiple PR scandals, and this movie is his way back into fame. His manager comes up with a plan. Adam Jakes and Carter Moon are going to be a couple so Adam can get people off the

unfortunate scandal. Carter gets paid for acting along but her life falls apart as she tries to hide the secret of it all being fake.

REVIEW While the plot and story were good and this book was great for middle school readers, the writing isn’t fit for a highschooler. It only mentions details that adds to the story, which causes the readers view to feel very limited. Because of the type of story, it only appeals to a small audience of people. It’s just not a book anyone can pick up and love, even if it’s amazing for those who are in the right positions to actually like it.

Five Nights At Freddy’s Review First game in long series

By Hunter Sanders Horror games are the type of games that want to get a good scare out of the player many enjoy it. There was a game series that tons of people were playing a few years ago and some still play for nostalgia. The series was called: Five Nights at Freddy’s.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is a survival horror game where the player has to survive five nights in your office from 12 AM to 6 AM while staying away from the animatronics: Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie the Bunny, Chica the Chicken, and

Foxy the Pirate Fox. If the player dies, it’s game over.

In Five Nights at Freddy’s 1, the player is a night guard working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and the player is just sitting in the office, watching the cameras, making sure nothing goes wrong in the pizzeria. But, the player isn’t alone, the animatronics will become active they will try and kill the player. They will become more active as the player progresses through the game. To avoid them, shut the doors to make them go away, but make sure the player doesn’t have them closed all night,

because it will drain the power and the power will go out and Freddy will kill the player. Using the cameras will also drain the power.

Conserving power is one of the main obstacles, along with the animatronics trying to stuff the player into an empty suit. Once the clock strikes 6 AM the night is over and the player is safe for the day. As the player progresses further and further into the game, the difficulty ramps up. I feel that FNAF 1 is still a great game, including the series.

It holds a very special place in my heart. If I wasn’t into this series I wouldn’t be able to do the things I do today.

Pumpkin Roll

Gingersnap Cookies

Ingredients for bread:

Ingredients

- 3 eggs -1 cup of sugar - 2/3 cup of pumpkin - 1 tsp of lemon juice -3/4 cup of flour -1 tsp of baking powder -2 tsp of cinnamon -1 tsp of ginger -1/2 tsp of nutmeg -1/2 tsp of salt -1 cup of finely chopped nuts *Mix in order, than put in an evenly greased pan and bake at 345 for 15-20 minutes.

Sprinkle on powdered sugar

Ingredients for filling:

-1 1/2 cup of powdered sugar -6 tablespoons of butter -3/4 tsp of vanilla -8 oz of cream cheese *Beat all together until smooth. Unroll pumpkin roll when cool and spread with filling. Roll back up and wrap in aluminum foil.Freeze roll.

Cut and serve.

-2 cups of flour -1 tablespoon ground ginger -2 tsp baking powder -1 tsp ground cinnamon -1/2 tsp salt -3/4 cup shortening -1 cup white sugar -1 egg -1/4 cup of dark molasses -1/3 cup of cinnamon sugar

Steps

-Preheat oven to 350 degrees -Sift flour, ginger, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt into a mixing bowl -Place shortening into a mixing bowl and beat until creamy. Gradually add white sugar, egg, and dark molasses.

Add flour mixture and mix until doughy.

-Roll balls in cinnamon sugar -Bake until tops are rounded and slightly cracked. Cool on a wire rack.
