Η αναδρομική έκθεση της Χρύσας Βέργη, με τίτλο “Η ψυχή του τοπίου” στην Πινακοθήκη των Κυκλάδων, μας δίνει την δυνατότητα να δούμε από κοντά το πως η φύση μπορεί να εκφραστεί μέσα από την τέχνη, αλλά και το πως η τέχνη εκφράζεται μέσα από την φύση. Η φιλοξενία έργων μίας τόσο σπουδαίας ζωγράφου, αποτελεί ιδιαίτερη τιμή για τον Δήμο μας. Το ταλέντο της κας Βέργη είναι αναμφισβήτητο και τα έργα της είναι ελκυστικά, όμορφα και εντυπωσιάζουν. Επιτρέψτε μου να επαναλάβω τα όσα έχουν πει κριτικοί εικαστικών για την εκλεκτή αυτή ζωγράφο: «οι πίνακες της μας καλούν να βυθιστούμε στη φύση, να αφουγκραστούμε την παλλόμενη καρδιά της και να μαντέψουμε τη λανθάνουσα αλλά απειλητική αγωνία της». Χαιρετίζουμε λοιπόν, με ιδιαίτερη ικανοποίηση την παρουσίαση της έκθεσης με την βεβαιότητα ότι το κοινό θα την αγκαλιάσει.

The presentation of the retrospective exhibition “The soul of the Landscape” of Chryssa Verghi enables us to see from up close how nature can be expressed through art but also how art expresses itself through nature.

Our Municipality is greatly honoured to host the works of such a distinguished painter. The talent of Ms Verghi is unquestionable and her works are attractive, beautiful and impressive.

Allow me to repeat what the art critics have said of this eminent painter: “her paintings invite us to immerse ourselves in nature, listen to its throbbing heart and sense its latent yet ominous anxiety”.

So it is with great satisfaction that we welcome this exhibition, and we are certain that the public will embrace it with warmth.

Η Χρύσα Βέργη είναι ζωγράφος της φύσης. Η στέρεη καλλιτεχνική της παιδεία, η μακρά εικαστική της εμπειρία και η ζωγραφική του βλέμματος, που έχει υιοθετήσει, της επιτρέπουν να δημιουργεί επιβλητικούς πίνακες. Τα διάφορα χρώματα που χρησιμοποιεί ( γαιώδη, πράσινα, γαλάζια, κ.λπ.) τα μεταμορφώνει, στα έργα της, σε μαγικές εικόνες. Η ζωγράφος, όπως καταφαίνεται από τα θέματα που καταπιάνεται, επιτυγχάνει, πράγματι, να συνδέει τη σχεδιαστική ζωγραφική δεινότητά της με μια χρωματική πανδαισία. Θα έλεγα, ότι με την όλη τεχνική της και το ταλέντο της δημιουργεί ένα μουσικό θίασο , που πλημμυρίζει τους χώρους των πινάκων της με θεσπέσιες συγχορδίες χρωμάτων και σχημάτων. Η ενασχόλησή της με τη φύση αποκαλύπτει μια ιδιοσυγκρασία γεμάτη πάθος, φλόγα και ευφορία, που μεταρσιώνει κάθε θεατή των πινάκων της. Θα μπορούσε να λεχθεί, ότι η προπεριγραφείσα δραστηριότητα της Χρύσας Βέργη την καθιστά οικολογικό πρεσβευτή και διασώστη του περιβάλλοντος. Κλείνοντας, θα επαναλάβω τα όσα έχουν πει για την εκλεκτή αυτή ζωγράφο, ότι οι πίνακες της «μας καλούν να βυθιστούμε στη φύση, να αφουγκραστούμε την παλλόμενη καρδιά της και να μαντέψουμε τη λανθάνουσα αλλά απειλητική αγωνία της».

Chryssa Verghi is a painter of nature. Her solid art education, her long experience in art and the ‘painting of the gaze’ she has adopted enable her to create imposing works. The various hues she employs (earth, green, blue...) turn her paintings into magic images.

Indeed, as her subjects demonstrate, the painter manages to combine painterly ability with a feast of colour. I would say that she employs all her talent and technique to create a musical ensemble that fills the space of her paintings with exquisite chords of shapes and colours. Her devotion to nature reveals an idiosyncrasy full of passion, flame and euphoria that overwhelms every viewer of her paintings. All this activity of Chryssa Verghi could be said to make her an ambassadress of ecology and champion of the environment. I close this note by repeating what has been said of this distinguished painter, whose works “invite us to immerse ourselves in nature, listen to its throbbing heart and sense its latent yet ominous anxiety”.

It is with great pleasure and anticipation that this August the Cycladic Gallery will be hosting the exhibition “The soul of the Landscape; Retrospective 1985-2015” by the painter Chryssa Verghi.

I met Ms Verghi years ago at her exhibition at the Zoumboulakis Gallery, and was immediately impressed with the quality of her work and the modesty of her nature — two virtues that are hard to find in our time.

In the last decades Chryssa Verghi has developed her own style in terms of subjects and aesthetic. Having studied at Art Schools in both Europe and America, the painter has long established a personal artistic proposition with a sound aesthetic approach that gives precedence to the ritual of the act of painting.

Her paintings are instantly recognizable ‘trademarks’, as the critics say. Her thoroughly executed, multifaceted large-scale works have already left their mark in the course of Greek landscape painting.

I am particularly moved by the fact that it was in Paris, where I’ve spent most of my life, that the painter realised her special and lifelong relationship with outdoor painting. She would leave the small and dark attic studio she shared with her subsequent husband, the painter Christos Pallantzas, to paint the grey light in the nearby Montsourris park and feel, as she has said, “infinite freedom”.

In this exhibition, visitors to the Cycladic Gallery will be able to follow the painter’s evolutionary course through a selection of works that span three decades.

The exhibition of Chryssa Verghi rounds up this year’s art season, and we are proud that Syros continues for one more year to stand out as an enviable hub of artistic activity on a national level.

Over the decades our island has been honoured to host exhibitions by the most celebrated artists of the Greek scene —Nikos Hatzikyriakos-Ghikas, Yannis Gaitis, Yannis Moralis, Thanos Tsingos, Panayotis Tetsis, Michalis Makroulakis, Achileas Droungas, Pavlos Samios, and others— turning Syros into a floating museum and inviting art lovers from our country and beyond to visit the magic lands of Art. I thank my highly perceptive advisors Ioanna Lalaouni and Angie Nomikou as well as, once again, my good friend Michalis Makroulakis.

Με πολλή χαρά και συγκίνηση φιλοξενούμε φέτος, τον Αύγουστο, στην Πινακοθήκη Κυκλάδων, την έκθεση της ζωγράφου Χρύσας Βέργη, με τίτλο «Η Ψυχή του Τοπίου- Αναδρομή 1985-2015». Γνώρισα την κα Βέργη, πριν πολλά χρόνια, σε έκθεσή της στην Γκαλερί Ζουμπουλάκη και αμέσως εντυπωσιάστηκα από την υψηλή ποιότητα του έργου της, αλλά και από την σεμνότητα που την διακρίνει: δύο αρετές δυσεύρετες στους καιρούς μας. Η Χρύσα Βέργη, έχει αναπτύξει τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες δικό της θεματολογικό και αισθητικό ύφος. Σπουδαγμένη σε Σχολές Καλών Τεχνών τόσο στην Ευρώπη, όσο και στην Αμερική, η ζωγράφος έχει εδώ και πολλά χρόνια, διαμορφώσει προσωπική, εικαστική πρόταση με ολοκληρωμένο αισθητικό προβληματισμό, δίνοντας πρωτεύοντα ρόλο στην τελετουργία της ζωγραφικής πράξης. Οι πίνακές της, «εικόνες σφραγίδες», όπως λένε οι ιστορικοί, αναγνωρίζονται με την πρώτη ματιά. Τα καλοδουλεμένα, πολύπλευρα, μεγάλης επιφάνειας έργα της έχουν, ήδη, δώσει το στίγμα τους στην πορεία της ελληνικής τοπιογραφίας. Με συγκινεί ιδιαίτερα το γεγονός, ότι το Παρίσι, όπου έχω ζήσει τα περισσότερα χρόνια της ζωής μου, ήταν ο τόπος, όπου η ζωγράφος συνειδητοποίησε την ιδιαίτερη και παντοτινή της σχέση με την υπαίθρια ζωγραφική. Ήταν τότε, που αφήνοντας την μικρή και σκοτεινή σοφίτα, που μοιραζόταν σαν ατελιέ, με τον ζωγράφο και μετέπειτα σύζυγό της Χρήστο Παλλαντζά, έβγαινε και ζωγράφιζε το γκρίζο φως του πάρκου Montsourris, αισθανόμενη, όπως η ίδια έχει πει, «απέραντη ελευθερία». Ο επισκέπτης της Πινακοθήκης των Κυκλάδων, λοιπόν, θα έχει την δυνατότητα, σε τούτη εδώ την έκθεση, να περιηγηθεί στην εξελικτική πορεία της ζωγράφου, μέσα από μία επιλογή έργων τριών δεκαετιών. Με την έκθεση της Χρύσας Βέργη, κλείνουμε την φετινή, εικαστική περίοδο, υπερήφανοι, που για μια ακόμη χρονιά, η Σύρος αναδεικνύεται σε πανελλήνιο, ζηλευτό κέντρο, εικαστικής δραστηριότητας. Τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες, έχουν τιμήσει το νησί μας, με τις εκθέσεις τους, οι σημαντικότεροι καλλιτέχνες της ελληνικής, εικαστικής σκηνής: Νίκος Χατζηκυριάκος-Γκίκας, Γιάννης Γαϊτης, Γιάννης Μόραλης, Θάνος Τσίγκος, Παναγιώτης Τέτσης, Μιχάλης Μακρουλάκης, Αχιλλέας Δρούγκας, Παύλος Σάμιος, κ.α , μετατρέποντας την Σύρο σε ένα πλωτό μουσείο και προσκαλώντας το φιλότεχνο κοινό του τόπου μας και όχι μόνον, να ξεναγηθεί στους μαγικούς χώρους της Τέχνης. Ευχαριστώ πολύ τις εξαιρετικά ευαίσθητες συμβούλους μου Ιωάννα Λαλαούνη και Άντζη Νομικού και ευχαριστώ, για άλλη μια φορά, τον καλό μου φίλο Μιχάλη Μακρουλάκη.

Η ψυχή του τοπίου στη ζωγραφική της Χρύσας Βέργη του Χάρη Καμπουρίδη «...Η εικαστική επιδεξιότητα στους πίνακες της Χρύσας Βέργη είναι μεγάλη, ο θεατής θα μπορούσε να αρκεστεί στην απόλαυση της μαστοριάς τους, ωστόσο οι ζωγραφιές αναδεικνύουν έναν δυναμικό προβληματισμό ανάμεσα στο αναγνωρίσιμο και στο αφαιρετικό, την “τάξη” και το “χάος”, με πινελιές αυτοδύναμες αλλά και μεταδοτικές την ίδια στιγμή». Αυτή ήταν η γεύση από μια παλιότερη έκθεση της ζωγράφου, ενώ παράλληλα το εισαγωγικό κείμενο της Μ. Λαμπράκη-Πλάκα εύστοχα μιλούσε για “γυμναστική του βλέμματος στην παλλόμενη καρδιά της φύσης”. Οι πίνακες της Βέργη αναγνωρίζονται με την πρώτη ματιά, είναι “εικόνες σφραγίδες” μιας τέχνης καλοδουλεμένης και πολύπλευρα συγκροτημένης. Ο θεατής αντικρίζει μεγάλες επιφάνειες φυσικού εδάφους στην εξοχή. Άλλοτε σαν χώμα ή λάσπη ή επιφάνεια υδάτινη κι άλλοτε σπαρμένες με πεσμένα φύλλα, ξερόκλαδα ή άλλα παραπλήσια στοιχεία ή ίχνη. Το χρώμα έχει έντονη υλική υπόσταση, αναπαριστά μεν μια χρωματική εντύπωση, αλλά ταυτόχρονα δηλώνει έντονα την παρουσία του ως αυτόνομο συστατικό, ως ύλη. Πολύ ιδιαίτερη είναι και η οπτική γωνία του βλέμματος, στα περισσότερα έργα σαν κατακόρυφη κάτοψη από επάνω, αλλά επίσης συχνά και σαν ανοδική σχεδιαστική προοπτική προς μια γραμμή ορίζοντα. Η σύνθεση των έργων βασίζεται κατά κανόνα σε ένα πλάνο, αλλά είναι πολλά έργα όπου στη γωνία ένα τμήμα της ζωγραφικής ανατρέπει την αίσθηση του πραγματικού. Μικρά οπτικά επεισόδια εμφανίζονται επίσης διακριτικά, σπανίως ως κεντρικό θέμα, είναι π.χ. κυματισμοί σε επιφάνειες νερού, γραμμές χάραξης στη γήινη επιφάνεια, κ.α. Δεν είναι δύσκολο να συμπεράνει κανείς με μια συνοπτική ματιά ότι η ζωγράφος έχει έναν μόνιμο διαχρονικό προβληματισμό, μια έρευνα και μια καλλιτεχνική διατύπωση που μιλά για την φυσική γήινη επιφάνεια κι όσα συμβαίνουν πάνω της, προεκτείνοντας συχνά την φυσική αίσθηση σε διακριτικά υπαινισσόμενες αλληγορίες, σε “ποιητικές νύξεις για τα ταπεινά και καταφρονεμένα στοιχεία της φύσης‘‘, όπως επεσήμανε η κριτικός Αθηνά Σχινά.

Έργα, αισθητικοί προβληματισμοί, εποχές - αναδρομή Με τακτικές αλλά όχι πολύ συχνές εκθέσεις σε κεντρικούς εκθεσιακούς χώρους, η Βέργη έχει αναπτύξει στις τελευταίες δεκαετίες μια ισχυρή παρουσία στη σύγχρονη ελληνική ζωγραφική, καθιερωμένη στους χώρους της κριτικής και των φιλότεχνων, για τους καλλιτεχνικούς προβληματισμούς και την εικαστική ποιότητα του έργου της. Τοπιογράφος κατεξοχήν, έχει δημιουργήσει δικό της θεματολόγιο και αισθητικό ύφος που δίνει συχνά το στίγμα στο γενικότερο σύνολο της τοπιογραφίας της ελληνικής ζωγραφικής. Ήδη από τα πρώτα της σχεδιάσματα και στα έργα της Σχολής, η διάθεση προς αυτή τη θεματολογία είναι εμφανής. Συστάδες φυλλωμάτων, δέντρα, επιφάνειες εδάφους κυριαρχούν, ενώ θέματα με εσωτερικούς χώρους και ανθρώπινη παρουσία είναι σε ελάσσονα αριθμό. Από τότε εμφανίζεται και η τάση να απεικονίζει τις μορφές όχι ως πρόθεση περιγραφής και λεπτομέρεια αλλά ως αποτέλεσμα της ελεύθερης γραφής και χρωματικής εναπόθεσης. Πρώτα δηλαδή οι ζωγραφικές της ενέργειες έχουν αυτονομία και εξπρεσιονιστική διάθεση, παρά καθήκον να απεικονίσουν μια αναγνωρίσιμη από την εμπειρία μορφή.

Το γνώρισμα αυτό έχει την ιστορική σημασία του, καθώς αντανακλά έναν καίριο προβληματισμό στους κόλπους των ζωγράφων από συστάσεως της σύγχρονης τέχνης: ποιός είναι ο ρόλος της ζωγραφικής επιφάνειας ; να λειτουργήσει ως καθρέφτης των μορφών που υπάρχουν ήδη στον κόσμο, ή να γίνει πεδίο γέννησης καινούριων; Καθώς ο εξπρεσιονισμός θεωρεί τον πίνακα ως μια νέα πραγματικότητα που την αξιώνει ως ισότιμη με την προϋπάρχουσα, έρχεται σε αντίθεση με τις ρεαλιστικές τάσεις που περισσότερο ξεκινούν αναπαριστάνοντας και προχωρώντας περιγραφικά την εικαστική αφήγηση. Μαθήτρια του Δημήτρη Μυταρά αλλά και του Νίκου Κεσσανλή η Χρύσα Βέργη, στοχάζεται πολύ σε ιστορικών διαστάσεων καλλιτεχνικά ερωτήματα και δίνει πρωτεύοντα ρόλο στην τελετουργία της ζωγραφικής πράξης. Ωστόσο η αναπαραστατική αναφορά στην εμπειρική οπτική πραγματικότητα δεν εξουδετερώνεται, καθώς οι χειρονομίες της πάνω στον πίνακα δεν είναι αυτοσκοπός, αλλά μετατρέπουν την εξπρεσιονιστική ασάφεια σε φόρμες αναγνωρίσιμες, τις χειρονομιακές πινελιές και την άτυπη (informel) χρήση των χρωματικών υλικών σε γλώσσα των εικαστικών δυναμικών δράσεων πάνω στην επιφάνεια, σε πρόταση ευμορφίας, αρμονίας. Πολλά έργα και εκφραστικές ενότητες της Βέργη είναι σχεδόν αφαιρετικά, σαν εντατική σειρά από δυναμικές πινελιές στο μουσαμά. Είναι όμως και στιγμές που αυτά τα ίδια έργα μοιάζουν πολύ συγκεκριμένα, σαν χωράφια με σπάρτα ή αγριόχορτα ειδομένα από πολύ κοντά. Αυτό το εκκρεμές στις δύο δημιουργικές αυτές τάσεις, λειτουργεί ως οδηγός στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος του έργου της και γίνεται η πηγή για εικαστικές διατυπώσεις ελκυστικές στο βλέμμα, πίνακες δηλαδή, όπου ο αισθητικός προβληματισμός έχει ολοκληρωθεί σε εικαστική πράξη. Μαζί με την αίσθηση του βλέμματος ενεργοποιείται και η αφή, αναλαμβάνοντας σοβαρό ρόλο στη ζωγραφική της. Όχι μόνο γιατί στα περισσότερα έργα το χρωματικό υλικό είναι πλούσιο ή και πηχτό, αφήνοντας αίσθηση όγκου, συνδυασμένο με αυτούσια υλικά από ύλες του εδάφους. Αλλά και γιατί η αίσθηση αυτή μεταβιβάζεται στον θεατή ως πρόσκληση να χαϊδέψει την επιφάνεια του έργου, ως επόμενη αυτονόητη κίνηση πρόσληψης του θεάματος, αμέσως μετά το βλέμμα. Μ’ αυτόν τον τρόπο, η ζωγραφική πραγματικότητα του πίνακα αυτονομείται μεν, γίνεται όμως και τόσο πειστική ως αληθοφάνεια που ζητά επιβεβαίωση, σαν ζωγραφική ρεαλιστική. Η Βέργη χρησιμοποιεί κυρίως ακρυλικά και λάδια, σε εναλλαγή και ζωγραφίζει με τα χέρια κάθε γωνία του πίνακα, ακόμη κι εκεί που ο θεατής έχει την παραπλανητική εντύπωση φωτορεαλισμού. Συχνά απλώνει τον μουσαμά στο έδαφος και προσεταιρίζεται αυτούσια υλικά (χώμα, φύλλα) ή ανάγλυφες φόρμες του.

Σύνθεση και σημεία αναφοράς Στα περισσότερα έργα, η αίσθηση χώρου και κατεύθυνσης είναι θέα από επάνω, η κάτοψη της γήινης επιφάνειας. Άλλοτε με κεντρικό θέμα το χώμα ή και τη λάσπη, κι άλλοτε την επιφάνεια νερού, είτε στάσιμου, π.χ. μιας λίμνης, είτε ρέοντος από κάποιο ποτάμι με τρόπο που να φαίνεται και ο βυθός του. Σε μια ενότητα έργων, το βλέμμα μας αιφνιδιάζεται διαπιστώνοντας πως το πραγματικό μέρος που αναγνωρίζει, δεν είναι παρά μια γωνιά στην άκρη του πίνακα, ενώ όσα εμφανίζονται και καταλαμβάνουν το κέντρο είναι μια αντανάκλαση στην επιφάνεια του νερού. Σε άλλα, μια υποθρώσκουσα σχεδιαστική προοπτική, δίνει αίσθηση ανόδου προς την κορυφή αμμόλοφων με ορίζοντα να εμφανίζεται μόλις στη κορυφή. Στη ζωγραφική της Βέργη, αναπτύσσεται ένας χαμηλόφωνος αλλά καλά ερευνημένος και διατυπωμένος στοχασμός για το ρόλο του σημείου αναφοράς. Πώς λειτουργεί και πώς μεταβάλλεται το φυσικό θέαμα όταν κινούμαστε εντός του; Ζήτημα θεμελιώδες στη τοπιογραφία, από τότε που ιδρύθηκε στην ολλανδική ζωγραφική του 17ου αιώνα, με την ιδιότυπη γεωγραφική ανάπλαση και το βλέμμα να αλλάζει σημεία εκκίνησης και διαδρομής περιπλανώμενο στον χώρο. Εμμέσως, η τοποθέτηση του βλέμματος δηλώνει και τη θέση του σώματος, συνεπώς τον τρόπο που εισέρχεται στο τοπίο ο θεατής.

Επεισόδια και αφηγήσεις φευγαλέων εντυπώσεων - συμβολισμοί Δεν είναι πάντα σαφές ότι η επιφάνεια της γης όπως ζωγραφίζεται, με προσομοιάζουσα ή αφαιρετική διάθεση, είναι το κύριο θέμα της ζωγραφικής της Βέργη. Πολλές φορές τον ρόλο του πρωταγωνιστή διεκδικούν και ελάσσονα οπτικά επεισόδια, είτε σε συσσώρευση, είτε μεγεθυμένα στο κέντρο: Φύλλα ξερά μαζεμένα σε σωρό ή πλέοντας πάνω σε υδάτινη γαλάζια διάφανη επιφάνεια. Περιδινήσεις του νερού μόλις διακρινόμενες ή ισχυρότερες και επεκτατικές. Το βάθος της λίμνης ή του ποταμιού ευδιάκριτο ή υπαινικτικό. Αντανακλάσεις του ουρανού ή δέντρων που δεν βλέπουμε μέσα στον πίνακα. Και, σπανιότερα, ένα μικρό παιδί που σκαλίζει και χαζεύει τριγύρω. Άλλο ζωντανό στοιχείο δεν εμφανίζεται, μολονότι η υγρασία και σκοτεινές γωνίες υπαινίσσονται μια τέτοια εύλογη πιθανότητα. Έτσι, μ’ όλα αυτά, από έργο σε έργο, ο θεατής παρακολουθεί μικρά επεισόδια πάνω στο χώμα και στο νερό, και τότε ο πίνακας λειτουργεί όχι μόνο ως δήλωση του εδάφους αλλά και ως χώρος με αφηγηματικές και συμβολικές προεκτάσεις. Μικρά ασήμαντα επεισόδια καταρχάς, σαν από μια διακοπτόμενη, από έργο σε έργο, αφήγηση. Εννοεί άραγε η καλλιτέχνης τη φύση ως προσωπικό καταφύγιο; Μήπως μνημονεύει την τυπολογία της αστικής εκδρομής στη φύση, όπως οι ποιμενικές συμφωνίες της κλασσικής μουσικής; Υπάρχουν επίσης και αρκετές χαμηλόφωνα διατυπωμένες αναφορές στην εικαστική ιστορία του τοπίου, π.χ με τον ανοδικό λόφο σαν αναφορά στον Wyeth, με τα νούφαρα στο νερό, με την ιμπρεσιονιστική χρωματική εντυπωσιολογία στη θέση της ρεαλιστικής περιγραφής, με τους ολλανδικούς ορίζοντες. Μ’ αυτήν την έννοια η Βέργη συναντά το κλίμα της μεταμοντέρνας εικαστικής συνομιλίας με αγαπημένες φάσεις από το παρελθόν της τέχνης. Το οδοιπορικό του βλέμματος του θεατή από την επιφάνεια προς το βάθος, έρχεται συχνά να ανιχνεύσει και μηνύματα όχι μόνο νατουραλιστικά και ρεαλιστικά, όσο μεταφυσικά, συμβολικά, αλληγορικά. Η φύση με την ιδιαίτερη, ανόργανη υπόσταση της που δείχνει ότι είναι απέναντι, χωρίς οργανική ζωή, είτε αντίστροφα, προσωποποιημένη και εύγλωττη. Μία παγανιστική διάσταση αναπτύσσεται ορισμένες φορές καθώς τα φυλλώματα και οι σκοτεινιές υπονοούν άλλους κόσμους. Και τότε οι πίνακες έχουν μια αρχέγονη δεισιδαιμονία, έναν ανιμισμό. Εντέλει, αυτή η απεικόνιση του φυσικού εδάφους της εξοχής είναι πολυσύνθετη. Διακριτικά πολύσημη και κλιμακούμενη μιλά πολύ περισσότερο απ’ ότι σε μια πρώτη διαγώνια ματιά αναγνώρισης της εικαστικής παράστασης του κάθε πίνακα.

Χρώμα, η επιδερμίδα της πραγματικότητας Στη ζωγραφική της Χρύσας Βέργη το έδαφος της εξοχής παρουσιάζεται ως προϊόν χρωματικής και όχι σχεδιαστικής επέμβασης, είναι δηλαδή μορφή που προκύπτει από την χρωματική επιφάνεια και όχι από την γραμμική αναπαράσταση. Και θυμόμαστε την αρχαιοελληνική λέξη ‘χρως’, που σημαίνει επιδερμίδα και είναι αυτή που δίνει τη ρίζα της για τη λέξη χρώμα. Ο χρωματισμός δεν είναι παρά η αριστοτελική “όψις” μιας επιφάνειας. Είναι επίσης γνωστό ότι η σχεδιαστική γραμμή δεν είναι παρά η τομή δύο επιφανειών. Στη ζωγραφική της Χρύσας Βέργη, το χρώμα έχει πρωτοκαθεδρία έναντι του σχεδίου. Χωρίς να υπάρχει χρωματική ένταση παρ’ όλα αυτά. Είναι η ύλη του χρώματος, η επιφάνεια. Η πρωτοκαθεδρία αυτή του χρώματος έχει περαιτέρω σημασίες. Δηλώνει την κυριαρχία του συναισθηματικού κόσμου έναντι του νοησιαρχικού, το “ύφος της ύπαρξης” σε αντιπαράθεση με το σχέδιο που δηλώνει “ύφος του γίγνεσθαι”, κατά τον θεμελιωτή της ιστορίας της τέχνης Χ. Βέλφλιν. Παρά τη στοχαστικότητα της, η ζωγραφική της Βέργη δεν γίνεται ποτέ εγκεφαλική. Αντίθετα, την επικοινωνία της με τον θεατή τη βασίζει στην αισθητηριακή συμμετοχή του μέσα σε όσα οι πίνακες αναπτύσσουν και προσκαλούν. Θέαση, αφή, κίνηση και τροχιά στον νοούμενο χώρο, συνθέτουν τους πίνακες της ως πεδία μιας επανεμβάπτισης στην φύση, την αίσθηση και τα μηνύματά της.

The soul of the landscape in the painting of Chryssa Verghi

'...The artistic skill in the paintings of Chryssa Verghi is great, and viewers would be satisfied with the pleasure of their craftsmanship alone; yet these paintings display a dynamic vacillation between the recognisable and the abstract, between 'order' and 'chaos', with brush strokes at once self-contained and infectious'.

This was the taste from an earlier show of the painter’s, while the introductory text by M. Lambraki-Plaka talked aptly about an 'exercise of the gaze on the pulsing heart of nature'.

The paintings of Verghi are instantly recognisable as ‘trademarks’ of a well-processed, fully thought-out art. The viewer gazes at large expanses of natural ground in the countryside, sometimes as earth, mud or water and sometimes strewn with dry leaves, twigs or similar traces and elements.

The paint is intensely physical, conveying not only a chromatic impression but also a strong presence as an autonomous ingredient, as matter. Also special is the viewing angle — a perpendicular plan view, in most cases, but often also as an upward perspective towards a line in the horizon.

Her compositions are generally based on a plan, although in many works a small section of the painting in one corner subverts the feeling of reality. Small visual events also appear discreetly, rarely as a main subject; it may be waves on a water surface, lines drawn on the earth, and so on. It is not hard to deduce after a brief look the artist’s long-held preoccupation, quest and artistic rendering that speaks of Earth’s natural surface and all that takes place upon it, often extending the natural sensation into subtly suggestive allegories, 'poetic hints About the humble and despised elements of nature', as pointed out by art critic Athena Schina.

Works, aesthetic preoccupations, phases, retrospection With regular but not frequent exhibitions at mainstream venues, over the last decades Verghi has established a strong presence in contemporary Greek painting and is known to critics and art lovers alike for her artistic quests and the aesthetic quality of her work. A landscape artist par excellence, she has established her own range of subjects and a style that often serves as a beacon for Greek landscape painting in general.

Her propensity for these subjects is already evident in her early sketching and student efforts where foliage, trees and expanses of soil far outnumber the instances of human presence and interior themes. She already shows the tendency to depict the forms not with the intention of describing them but as a result of freehand drawing and colouring. This means that her painterly actions are autonomous and expressionistic rather than duty-bound to portray a form recognisable by experience.

This trait has its historical importance, as it reflects a key preoccupation of painters since

the beginning of contemporary art: what is the role of the painted surface — to serve as a mirror to the forma that already exist in the world or to give birth to new ones?

Since expressionism treats the painting as a new reality which it upholds as equally valid to the existing one, it contrasts with the trends of realism that tend to begin by representing and then they advance the visual narrative in a descriptive fashion.

A student of Dimitris Mytaras and Nikos Kessanlis, Chryssa Verghi reflects a lot on historic artistic questions and ascribes a primary importance to the ritual of painting. However, the representational references to empirical visual reality are not obliterated, since her gestures on the painting are not an end in itself; they turn the expressionistic vagueness into recognisable forms, the gestural brush strokes and the informel usage of paint into a language of dynamic visual actions on the surface — into a proposition of beauty and harmony.

Many of Verghi’s works and series are almost abstract, like an intensive range of dynamic brush strokes on the canvas. Yet there are moments when these same works seem quite specific, like fields with sown or wild plants viewed from very close up. This oscillation between the two creative trends serves as a guide for most of her oeuvre and becomes the source of attractive visual renderings in which her aesthetic preoccupations culminate in artistic acts.

The sense of touch is also activated alongside vision, assuming a key role in her painting. It is not only because in most works the material is rich or even thick, combined with earthy materials to leave you with a sense of volume; it is also because this feeling is conveyed to the viewer as an invitation to caress the surface of the work as the next natural step in perceiving the spectacle after looking at it. The work’s painterly reality is thus rendered autonomous and becomes quite convincing as a verisimilitude that seeks confirmation; like realistic painting.

Verghi uses mainly acrylics and oils interchangeably, and paints every corner of the painting by hand, even where the viewer is tricked into an impression of photorealism. She often spreads the canvas on the ground to appropriate its materials or forms.

Composition and reference points In most works the perspective is from above, a plan view of the earth’s surface. The main subject may be soil or mud, or a surface of water, either still, as in a lake, or flowing in some river whose bottom remains visible.

In one series of works our gaze is surprised to realise that the reality it recognises is just a corner of the painting, and what appears and takes up the centre is a reflection on water. In other works a ‘worm’s eye’ perspective gives the impression of going up the slopes of sand dunes, with the horizon barely visible at the top of the painting.

The painting of Verghi reflects a muted yet thoroughly researched and well articulated contemplation of the role of the reference point. How does it function and how does the spectacle change as we move within it? It is a key question in landscape painting since its emergence in 17th-century Dutch art, with the peculiar geographic reconstruction and the gaze changing starting points and paths as it wanders in space. The positioning of the gaze implies also that of the body, and hence the way in which the viewer enters the landscape.

Episodes and narratives of fleeting impressions; symbolisms It is not always clear whether the earth surface as it is painted, in a replicating or abstract approach, is indeed the main subject in Verghi’s painting. The leading role is often claimed by minor visual episodes, either accumulated or enlarged in the centre: dry leaves gathered in heaps or floating on a blue, translucent surface of water; swirls of water, barely visible or stronger and expanding; the bottom of a lake or river, vague or clearly visible; reflections of trees or the sky that we do not see in the painting; and, more rarely, a small child poking around. No other living element ever appears, although the dark and humid corners hint at such a possibility.

With all this, from one work to the next the viewer follows these minor events on soil or water, and thus the painting goes beyond a picture of the ground to become a space with narrative and symbolic connotations.

Small, apparently insignificant episodes, as if from a story interrupted between each work. Does the artist see nature as a personal refuge, one wonders? Is she alluding to the typology of urbanites’ excursions to nature, as in the pastoral symphonies of classical music?

There are also several muted references to the history of landscape painting, for instance the rising hill as a reference to Wyeth, the water lilies, the impressionistic colours in

place of a realistic description or the Dutch horizons. In this sense Verghi joins the postmodern trend of conversing with favourite phases from the past of art.

As the viewer’s gaze travels from the surface inward, the naturalistic and realistic messages are joined by metaphysical, symbolic, allegorical ones. A pagan aspect emerges occasionally as the foliage and the dark corners hint at other worlds, and then the paintings acquire a primordial superstition, an animism. Ultimately, this depiction of nature in the countryside is complex, its discreet multiple signs escalating until the painting ends up telling us much more than a quick look at the picture initially reveals.

Colour, the skin of reality In the painting of Chryssa Verghi the countryside terrain comes as the result of colouring rather than design, i.e. it is a form derived from paint rather than linear representation. We are reminded here that the Greek word for colour, chroma, comes from the ancient 'chros', or skin. Colour is nothing but the Aristotelian ‘aspect’ of a surface. It is also known that a drawing line is in fact the intersection of two surfaces. In the painting of Chryssa Verghi colour takes precedence over drawing. Nevertheless, there is no chromatic tension; it is all down to the matter of colour, the surface.

There is more to this ascendancy of colour: it also denotes the dominance of the emotional world over the rational one, the 'style of existence' as opposed to the ‘style of becoming’ as represented by drawing, according to the father of art history, H. W�lfflin.

For all its reflective nature, the painting of Verghi never becomes cerebral. On the contrary, its communication is based on the viewer’s sensorial participation in what the works develop and propose. Vision, touch, motion and trajectory within the painted space turn her paintings into fields for one’s re-immersion in nature, its feeling and its messages.

Cezanne had said that “Art is Man added to Nature”.

O μεγάλος νόστος στη ζωγραφική της Χρύσας Βέργη «Φύσις κρύπτεσθαι φιλεί» Ηράκλειτος (Απ. 123)

Νόστος, επιστροφή, νοσταλγία. Αυτή είναι η λέξη κλειδί· καλύτερα, αυτή είναι η κινούσα Αρχή της νέας τέχνης. Οχι μόνο στον τόπο μας. Αλλά αν συμβαίνει περισσότερο οτον τόπο μας και ενεξήγητο είναι και ευκταίο. Γιατί η φυγή - κι ας ήταν προς το μέλλον - δεν οδηγούσε πουθενά. Από άβυσσο είναι γεμάτη η ψυχή μας. Από την άβυσσο που αφάνισε τα όνειρα, τις ιδεολογίες, τους ήρωες, τα ιδανικά και το χειρότερο, συμπαρέσυρε τη μνήμη τους. Και πλάι στην άβυσσο της ιστορίας, σύμμετρα και εξίσου απειλητικά, χαίνει η άβυσσος της φυσικής ιστορίας. Κάθε στιγμή, ανεπαίσθητα, ένα κομμάτι του πλανήτη, ένα κομμάτι της δημιουργίας χάνεται, και μαζί μ' αυτό σβήνει το όνομά του και η μνήμη του. Το όνομα που ο ίδιος ο Αδάμ έδωσε «πάσι τοις κτήνεσι και πάσι τοις πετεινοίς του ουρανού και πάσι τοις Θηρίοις του αγρού», όπως μας διδάσκει η «Γένεσις». Αυτή είναι η δεύτερη και πιο μοιραία έξωση απ' τον παράδεισο. Από καιρό είχαμε χάσει τα ονόματα. Τα ονόματα που κάθε μεγάλη ποίηση διέσωζε ως κιβωτός: Σολωμός, Κάλβος, Παλαμάς, Σικελιανός, Παπαδιαμάντης -στους ποιητές τον κατατάσσω κι αυτόν - Σεφέρης, Ρίτσος, Ελύτης. Διαβάστε σύγχρονους Ελληνες ποιητές. Το ρημαγμένο αστικό τοπίο έχει εξορίσει την φύση από τους στίχους τους. Ευτυχώς όμως κι εκεί έχει σημάνει η ώρα του νόστου. Είναι θαρρώ, η μόνη ελπίδα σωτηρίας. Δεν φτάνουν τα κινήματα της οικολογίας και του περιβάλλοντος. Ρωτήστε τους οικολόγους αν μπορούν να ταυτίσουν μια βελανιδιά, μια χαρουπιά, μια οξιά, να ξεχωρίσουν μια πορτοκαλιά από μια λεμονιά, να αναγνωρίσουν ένα Θάμνο ελληνικό, να σου περιγράψουν το άνθος και το άρωμά του. Μιλούν αόριστα για το πράσινο που χάνεται. Δεν είναι το πράσινο που χάνεται, αλλά τα γένη και τα είδη που λησμονήσαμε. Η λήθη των ονομάτων υπήρξε το προοίμιο του αφανισμού, το άφωνο σύμβολό του. Στην ζωγραφική, το προοίμιο της λήθης το έγραψε ο Ιμπρεσιονισμός, αρχίζοντας από το ίδιο το όνομά του. Την εντύπωση, το οπτικό ερέθισμα ζητούσε να αποτυπώσει ο ζωγράφος οτον πίνακά του και όχι την οντολογική ταυτότητα των πραγμάτων. Την ζωγραφική του πνεύματος την διαδέχτηκε η ζωγραφική του βλέμματος. Το επόμενο βήμα, σ' αυτή την πορεία ήταν η αφαίρεση. Με τρόμο αναλογίζομαι σήμερα τι σήμαινε εκείνη η παθολογική απέχθεια του Μόντριαν προς την φύση, που την είχε ζωγραφίσει ωστόσο στη νεότητά του τόσο εύγλωπα. Γύριζε λένε, τα νώτα του προς το παράθυρο, γιατί τον τάραζε και η θέα ακόμη των δέντρων. Οι καλλιτέχνες είναι μετρονόμοι και πρόσκοποι του καιρού τους. Ετσι σαν μια ευοίωνη προφητεία, οφείλουμε να ερμηνεύσουμε τον ομόθυμο ίμερο επιστροφής που συναγείρει τους νέους καλλιτέχνες όπως κι αν εκφράζονται· με παραδοσιακούς ή σύγχρονους τρόπους· με πινέλα και χρώματα ή με κατασκευές, περιβάλλοντα και δράσεις. Μάνο επιφανειακά μπορείς να υψώσεις στεγανά ανάμεσά τους. Γιατί σημασία δεν έχει πως εκφράζεσαι αλλά ποιό λόγο, ποιό μήνυμα προσπαθείς να αρθρώσεις και αν τελικά το μήνυμά σου σαρκώνεται σε λόγο τέχνης, σε μορφή με εντελέχεια και πνοή ζώσα. Με τρυφερότητα και αγωνία παρακολουθώ εδώ κι ενάμισυ χρόνο την Χρύσα Βέργη να φορτώνεται τα σύνεργα της ζωγραφικής και να βυθίζεται σε κάμπους και σταροχώραφα, σε

ελαιώνες και πορτοκαλεώνες. Το διάβημα ηχεί παράταιρο και χιμαιρικό. Μα τί έχει ακόμη να αποκαλύψει η Φύση σ' ένα νέο ζωγράφο του λήγοντος 20ου αιώνα; Την κρίσιμη απάντηση δεν την περιμένουμε από τα χείλη του καλλιτέχνη, ούτε από την ετυμηγορία του κριτικού, αλλά από τα ίδια τα έργα. Τα μεγάλα τελάρα της Χρύσας Βέργη ξεδιπλώνουν μπροστά στα μάτια μας μια φύση όχι αόριστη αλλά οντολογικά και υλικά ταυτισμένη. Το έδαφος είναι χρώμα και χώμα. «Ψηλαφείς» την υφή του, την αδρό-τητα, την αντίσταση, την υγρασία, την ξηρότητα. Κορμοί και φυλλώματα, άνθη, κλαριά, στάχυα, καλαμιές, βράχια και πέτρες υποβάλλονται με ενάργεια Θέτοντας σε συν-κίνηση τις ναρκωμένες μας αισθήσεις, ανακαλώντας εκείνη την ξεχασμένη αισθητική κατηγορία του Πλάτωνα, την «συγγυμνασία» των αισθήσεων. Η ζωγράφος βυθίζεται και μας βυθίζει μέσα στη φύση. Με μια κοντινή όραση πουλιού που χαμηλοπετά ή αγρότη που άλλοτε σκύβει για να «Θεραπεύσει» τη γη κι άλλοτε αναβλεμματίζει για ν' αντικρύσει μέσα από ρίζες και φυλλώματα ένα κομμάτι ουρανού αίθριου ή πορφυρού ανάλογα με την ώρα. Και λέω αγρότη γιατί η ζωγράφος διατηρεί μια σωματική, μια βιωματική επαφή με το Θέμα της, που μεταδίδεται αυτόματα και στον Θεατή της ζωγραφικής επιφάνειας. Η οπτική γωνία καθορίζει την έκταση, τη μορφή του θεάματος. Τέσσερα τετραγωνικά φυτεμένο χώμα, όσο και η ζωγραφική επιφάνεια. Πουθενά ορίζοντας, πουθενά διαφυγή. Το βλέμμα αιχμάλωτο στα γαιώδη και πράσινα πέρα ως πέρα. Η ψευδαίσθηση είναι παραπλανητική. Μ' ένα δεύτερο κύπαγμα ανακαλύπτεις μία γραφή χειρονομιακή, ελεύθερη αλλά ελεγχόμενη, που αναπροσαρμόζεται σύμμετρα με τις απαιτήσεις του θέματος, με το είναι της διάρκειας, ή με το γίγνεσθαι της αλλαγής. Με την ακμή της σπάτουλας ζωγραφίστηκαν τα ανεμοδαρμένα στάχυα, με κηλίδες και αποτυπώματα αποδύθηκαν τα ρέοντα φυλλώματα της ελιάς. Η γραφή είναι σύγχρονη, συχνά σχεδόν αφηρημένη. Η αίσθηση όμως γνώριμη, παντοτινή. Το βλέμμα, είναι φανερό, έχει γυμναστεί πάνω σε τρόπους και τεχνικές παλαιών και νέων δασκάλων. Οτι πήρε η ζωγράφος το αφομοίωσε, τό’ κανε ανέκλητα δικό της. Με σιγουριά ρωμαλέα και Θηλυκή. Η Χρύσα Βέργη είναι ζωγράφος με γλώσσα κατακτημένη, προσωπική. Τα έργα της βρίσκονται σε αρμονική ομολογία με τα έργα των ομοτέχνων και ομηλίκων της που ανακαλούν αρχέγονες τελετουργίες της φύσης και της αγροτικής ζωής. Ισως η μόνη διαφορά είναι ότι εδώ αποφεύγεται συστηματικά κάθε είδος συμβολική παραδήλωση. 0 Θεατής καλείται να μοιραστεί το βιώμα της ζωγράφου χωρίς λέξεις κλειδιά και νοηματικούς λαβυρίνθους. Με αμεσότητα αφοπλιστική, που επενεργεί θεραπευτικά πάνω στις ατροφικές αισθήσεις του σημερινού εξόριστου των μεγαλουπόλεων.

The Great Nostos in the painting of Chryssa Verghi "Nature loves to hide" Heraclitus, 123

Nostos, homecoming, nostalgia: this is the keyword or, rather, the motive power of new art — and not just in our part of the world. If it is more pronounced over here, this is both explicable and welcome. For flight —even flight towards the future— leads nowhere. Our soul is already full of abyss; the abyss that has obliterated dreams, ideologies, heroes, ideals and, what is worse, has erased their memory as well.

Gaping next to the abyss of history, in an equally sinister way, is the abyss of natural history. Every minute, a piece of the planet is imperceptibly lost, a piece of creation along with its memory and its name; the names given by Adam himself “to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field”, as we are told in Genesis. This is our second and more fatal expulsion from paradise. We had long lost the names; the names that all great poetry preserved like an ark: Solomos, Kalvos, Palamas, Sikelianos, Papadiamantis —I count him as a poet, too— Seferis, Ritsos, Elytis. Read today’s Greek poets: the desolate urban landscape has ousted nature from their verse. Luckily, the time for nostos has come there, too. It is, I think, our only hope of salvation.

The movements of ecology and the environment are not enough. Ask the environmentalists if they can identify an oak or a beech, if they can tell an orange tree from a lemon tree, if they can name a Greek bush and describe its flowers and their fragrance. They talk vaguely about the dwindling vegetation. It’s not vegetation that’s lost, but the species and genera we have forgotten. The oblivion of names is the prelude to extinction, its voiceless symbol.

In painting, the prelude to extinction was written by Impressionism, starting from its name itself. It was the impression, the visual stimulus that painters sought to convey in their paintings, not the ontological identity of things. The painting of the spirit was succeeded by the painting of the gaze. The next step along this course was abstraction. I shudder to think of the meaning of Mondrian’s pathological aversion to nature, although he had painted it so eloquently in his youth. He was said to turn his back to the window, because the sight alone of trees upset him.

Artists are the metronomes and foretellers of their time. So it is as a good omen that we must look at the unanimous urge for homecoming that stirs up our young artists, whichever way they express themselves in; with brush and paint or through constructions, environments and actions. Any divisions among them would only be superficial, for what matters is not how you express yourself but what message you are trying to convey, and whether your message becomes artistic discourse; whether it acquires a complete and living form.

Tenderly and anxiously I have been watching Crhyssa Verghi this last year and a

half packing her painting implements and walking off into meadows and wheat fields, olive groves and orange orchards. The venture sounds odd and chimerical: what can nature still reveal to a young painter of the late twentieth century? The crucial answer will come neither from the artist’s lips nor from the critic’s verdict, but from the works themselves.

What unfolds before our eyes on the large canvases of Chryssa Verghi is a nature not vague but ontologically and physically concrete. The ground is paint and earth. You can ‘touch’ the texture, the roughness, the dryness or humidity. Tree trunks and foliage, flowers, branches, wheat stocks, reeds, rocks and stones come alive, rousing our deadened senses and recalling Plato’s forgotten aesthetic category, the “joint exercise” of the senses.

The painter takes us with her as she goes deep into nature. Her gaze is that of a low-flying bird or a farmer who bends down to ‘serve’ the earth or raises his glance to peek at a section of sky from among the roots and the foliage – a sky blue or scarlet, depending on the time of day. And I say ‘farmer’ because the painter retains a physical, experiential contact with the subject which is automatically conveyed to the viewer.

The viewing angle determines the form and the scale of the spectacle. Four rectangles of planted earth, as large as the painted surface. No horizon anywhere, no escape route. The gaze remains captive in the earthy and green hues. The illusion is deceptive. With a second look you discover a gestural script, free yet controlled, which adapts itself to the requirements of the subject, the given duration or the ongoing change. The wind-shaken straws were painted with the edge of the spatula, the flowing leaves of olive trees with spots and imprints. The script is contemporary, sometimes almost abstract; but the feeling is familiar, timeless. It is obvious that the gaze has been trained on the methods and ways of masters old and new. Everything the painter took she assimilated, made it irrevocably hers — with a robust female assurance. Chryssa Verghi is a painter who has conquered her own personal idiom.

Her works are in harmony with those of her contemporaries that recall primordial rituals of nature and rural life. Perhaps the only difference is that she deliberately avoids all kinds of connotations. The viewer is called upon to share the painter’s experience without keywords and labyrinthine meanings. Her disarming immediacy has a healing effect on the atrophied senses of today’s exiled urbanites.

…Ερμηνεύοντας μια εσωτερική πραγματικότητα, επιλέγω πότε σχεδιάζοντας και πότε καταστρέφοντας, μορφοποιώντας με το χρώμα, το φως και την σκιά, οδηγούμενη από το συναίσθημα που μου προκαλείται, δουλεύοντας μέσα στο ίδιο μου το θέμα. Αφήνω το ίδιο το έργο – ένα νέο δικό μου παράθυρο/πλαίσιο/κομμάτι φύσης (fragment), να με καθοδηγήσει στις δικές του ζωγραφικές, πλαστικές αξίες και ανάγκες. Στο τέλος το έργο, που μου αποκαλύπτεται, σχεδόν πάντα, απέχει από την αρχική εικόνα που είχα στο μυαλό μου. Η ζωγραφική διαδικασία με οδηγεί σε άλλους δρόμους….

‌Interpreting an inner reality I make my choices, sometimes drawing and sometimes destroying, shaping by colour, light and shadow, driven by the emotions that rise in me as I process the subject in my mind. I leave it to the work itself —a new window/frame/fragment of nature to guide me to its own painterly values and needs. In the end the work revealed to me is almost always far from the original image I had in mind. The painting process takes me along other roads‌

Η παλλόμενη καρδιά της φύσης στη ζωγραφική της Χρύσας Βέργη Η Χρύσα Βέργη έχει δώσει το στίγμα της ζωγραφικής της από τις πρώτες της εκθέσεις. Παραμένει και κείνη, όπως και μια συντροφιά από ζωγράφους της γενιάς της, πιστή στις παραδοσιακές αξίες του καμβά, του χρωστήρα, της χρωστικής ύλης, ιδιαίτερα όμως του ελαιοχρώματος. Ανήκει στους τελευταίους και γι’ αυτό προνομιακούς εραστές της τερεβινθίνης, όπως θα έλεγαν σε άλλους καιρούς. Η Χρύσα Βέργη είναι ζωγράφος της φύσης. Είναι παθιασμένη με τη φύση· με μια φύση λεοναρδική, γεμάτη ενέργεια, κίνηση, ζωντάνια, μια φύση που μεταμορφώνεται αδιάκοπα. Να γιατί η Χρύσα δεν ζωγραφίζει από φωτογραφία. Γιατί η φωτογραφία είναι μια «θανατογραφία», όπως υποστήριξε εύστοχα ο Ρολάν Μπάρτ. Θα μπορούσε λοιπόν να «δολοφονήσει» το στοιχείο εκείνο που βρίσκεται στον πυρήνα των εκφραστικών προθέσεων της ζωγράφου. Ο ιδανικός της στόχος είναι να συλλάβει το γίγνεσθαι, τον δημιουργικό πυρετό, τη ροή των φαινομένων. Βέβαια, ανάλογο ήταν και το ενδιαφέρον των Ιμπρεσιονιστών. Η διαφορά είναι ότι τη Χρύσα Βέργη δεν την συναρπάζουν τα φευγαλέα φαινόμενα, νερά, σύννεφα, ιριδισμοί, φυλλώματα, που προσπαθούσαν να αποτυπώσουν με τη γρήγορη και συγκοπτόμενη πινελιά τους οι ποιητές- ζωγράφοι του λαοφίλητου κινήματος. Η Χρύσα επικεντρώνεται σε λιγοστά στοιχειακά θέματα. Στα τελευταία της έργα κυριαρχεί ο διάλογος ανάμεσα στο χώμα, τη γη, και το νερό. Όχι τόσο το ανήσυχο υγρό στοιχείο της θάλασσας όσο το στάσιμο νερό των ποταμών και των λιμνών. Εκεί όπου μια αμφίβια βλάστηση, μια αμφίβια ζωή αθέατων αλλά αισθητών μικροοργανισμών πλουτίζει την επιφάνεια με κρυφούς παλμούς· στην παρυφή, στην όχθη, στο σύνορο ανάμεσα στο στερεό και το υγρό, ανάμεσα στη βεβαιότητα του στέρεου και το φόβο του άγνωστου, του ρευστού. Όπως είχαμε επισημάνει και παλιότερα, η Χρύσα δουλεύει τα έργα της απλωμένα καταγής και όπως θα έκανε ένας φιλόπονος γεωργός, σκύβει για να μελετήσει το θέμα της, να μυρίσει το βρεγμένο χώμα, τον βάλτο, τα βρύα, να αφουγκραστεί τους υπόκωφους κρότους της ζωής που φρικιά κάτω από την επιφάνεια. Για να μεταδώσει την αίσθηση που την πλημμυρίζει, επινοεί τρόπους και τεχνικές που θα τη βοηθήσουν να συλλάβει και να μεταδώσει αργότερα στο θεατή του έργου της αυτή τη μυστική αίσθηση, τη μυστική ζωή. και συναγείρει όλες τις αισθήσεις σε μια πλατωνική συγγυμνασία, που της είναι απαραίτητη για να δημιουργήσει μια εικαστική συστοιχία, με το ζωντανό κομμάτι φύσης που θέλει να αιχμαλωτίσει. Η θέαση του μοτίβου από πάνω, εξ απόπτου, επιβάλλει μια κατακόρυφη ανάπτυξη της σύνθεσης, που αποκλείει τον ορίζοντα. Έτσι αποφεύγεται η αίρεση της προοπτικής, όπως επιτάσσει άλλωστε η αισθητική του μοντερνισμού, ενώ η ζωγραφική επιφάνεια ταυτίζεται με το μοτίβο. Η ζωγράφος θα επικαλεστεί και θα επιστρατεύσει τη στέρεη καλλιτεχνική της παιδεία, τη μακρά της άσκηση και τη γυμναστική του βλέμματος πάνω στην παλιά και τη νέα ζωγραφική για να μεταστοιχειώσει σε εικόνα ορατή και απτή την αισθητική και αισθητηριακή εμπειρία που βιώνει μπροστά στο μοτίβο. Πύκνωση και αραίωση της ζωγραφικής ύλης, λαζούρες, παστώματα, επικαλύψεις και παλίμψηστα δημιουργούν εικόνες που άλλοτε παραπέμπουν στην παραδοσιακή τοπιογραφία, άλλοτε θυμίζουν την σεληνιακή τοπιογραφία ενός Τάπιες κι άλλοτε πάλι συνδέονται με την χειρονομιακή γραφή ενός Πόλλοκ. Πράγματι, κανείς δεν μπορεί να ισχυριστεί σήμερα πως η νέα παραστατική ζωγραφική επαναλαμβάνει την παλιά. Όχι μόνο οι εικόνες του φυσικού κόσμου άλλαξαν αλλά και ο τρόπος που τις προσλαμβάνουν οι αισθήσεις μεταβλήθηκε ριζικά. Κυρίως όμως άλλαξε η γλώσσα της τέχνης, καθώς ενσωμάτωσε την πολύμορφη και γόνιμη εμπειρία του μοντερνισμού. Τα χρωματικά σχήματα που κυριαρχούν στα τελευταία έργα της Χρύσας είναι τα γαιώδη της χωματένιας όχθης, τα πελιδνά πράσινα της παρόχθιας βλάστησης, τα χλωρά πράσινα των φυλλωμάτων, οι γαλάζιοι ουράνιοι αντικατοπτρισμοί στην επιφάνεια του νερού, τα λαμπυρίσματα του ήλιου στις κόχες των κυματισμών του. The throbbing heart of nature in Chryssa Verghi’s painting The stance Chryssa Verghi takes in regard to her painting has been obvious since her earliest exhibitions. In the company of other painters of her generation she has also remained faithful to the traditional values founded on the canvas, the paint-brush, and the chromatic material, oils in particular. She belongs to the last, and therefore privileged, lovers of turpentine, as they would have said in times past.

Chryssa Verghi is a painter of nature. She is impassioned with nature; with a Leonardian nature, full of energy, movement, and vitality, a nature that is being ceaselessly transformed. And this is why Chryssa never paints from photographs. Because a photograph is a “thanatograph”, as Roland Barthes puts its so well. Thus it might be able to “murder” the element found at the core of the painter’s expressive proposals. Her ideal aim is to capture the state of becoming, the creative fever, the flow of phenomena. Of course, the Impressionists also had a similar interest.

The difference is that Chryssa Verghi is not swept away by the fleeting phenomena, the water, clouds, iridescences, and foliage, which these poet-painters of the popular movement endeavored to set down through their rapid and compact brushstrokes.

Chryssa is focused on a handful of elemental subjects. In her latest work the dialogue between soil, the Earth and water is the dominant feature. Not so much the restless liquid element of the sea but rather the standing water of rivers and lakes. In those places where an amphibious vegetation, an amphibious life of invisible but tangible microorganisms, enriches the surface with hidden pulses; at the edge or on the bank of a river or lake, on that borderline between the dry and the wet, between the certainty of the solid and the fear of the unknown, the fluid.

As we have noted elsewhere, Chryssa spreads her paintings on the ground in order to work on them, as a industrious farmer might, bending over them to study her subject, to smell the damp earth, the swamp, the moss, to eavesdrop on the muted sounds of life that rustle under the surface. In order to transmit the feeling that inundates her, she invents methods and techniques which help her to conceive of this mysterious feeling, this mystic sense of life and, later, transmit it to the viewer of the work. The struggle she has with the empty canvas calls forth and marshals all

the senses in a Platonic exercise which is necessary for the creation of a visual alignment, with the living piece of nature she wants to capture.

The view of the motif from above, from a distance, prescribes the vertical development of the composition which rules out the horizon. Thus the heresy of perspective is avoided, which, moreover, is ordained by the aesthetics of modernism, while the painting surface itself is identified with the motif. The painter will call forth and mobilize her solid artistic education, her long-term exercise and training of the eye on both the old and the new painting in order to transmute into a visible and tangible image the aesthetic and intuitive experience which she lives out before the motif. She makes her painting material both thicker and thinner using glazing, impasto, coatings and palimpsests in order to create images which sometimes refer to the traditional landscape and other times are more reminiscent of the lunar landscape of Tapies while at still other times they show a connection with the gestural work of Pollock.

Indeed, no one can today maintain that the new figurative painting is a repetition of the old. Not only have the images of the natural world changed but the manner in which they are taken in by the senses has also radically altered. But what has really changed is the language of art, as it has been incorporated into the multiform and fertile experience of modernism.

The color schemes that dominate Chryssa’s latest work include the browns of the earthen bank of the river, the livid greens of the vegetation along the lakeshores and river banks, the fresh greens of the foliage, the blue skies reflected on the surface of water, and the gleaming of the sun in the recesses of its waves. The imposing paintings of Chryssa Verghi call on us to immerse ourselves in nature and to eavesdrop on its throbbing heart, trying to divine its dormant but nonetheless threatening distress.

...δουλεύοντας στη φύση, προσπαθώντας, να αιχμαλωτίσω το φως που διαρκώς αλλάζει, πολλές φορές, η ζωγραφική περνάει απ’ ευθείας από τα μάτια στο χέρι… …δεν σκηνοθετώ, δεν κάνω προσχέδια, «ρίχνω» απ’ ευθείας την εικόνα που έχει δημιουργηθεί στο μυαλό μου στον άδειο καμβά, ελεύθερο χωρίς τελάρο, στο έδαφος... ...αποφεύγοντας την εγκεφαλική διαδικασία, ζωγραφίζω, τότε, ακουμπώντας κυρίως στο συναίσθημα…

Mε την πάροδο των χρόνων, έχω ασυνείδητα κατεβάσει το βλέμμα προς τα κάτω, αποκλείοντας τους ανοιχτούς, μακρινούς ορίζοντες και τους ουρανούς, που η ύπαρξή τους αντανακλάται μόνο στις υγρές επιφάνειες. Συνειδητοποιώ, ότι αυτό γίνεται προκειμένου να επικεντρωθώ, διεισδύοντας, ερμηνεύοντας, αποκωδικοποιώντας αυτή την ατέρμονη, ποικίλη ύλη της φύσης, που είναι ζωντανή. Επινοώντας τρόπους, κάθε φορά, ανακαλύπτοντας μεθόδους και τεχνικές, προκειμένου να μεταφέρω την δική μου αίσθηση, με μέσο το χρώμα, το σχέδιο, τη φόρμα, τον ρυθμό, ακόμα και την εναπόθεση φυσικής ύλης στον καμβά. Η διαδικασία με ενδιαφέρει περισσότερο από το τελικό αποτέλεσμα, που έρχεται, όταν πια το ίδιο το έργο δεν με αφήνει να το συνεχίσω…

Οver the years I have unconsciously brought my gaze downwards, leaving out the open, distant skies and horizons whose existence is only reflected on the water surfaces. I realise that this is in order to focus on the infinitely varied and live nature by penetrating, interpreting and decoding; inventing new ways and discovering methods and techniques to convey my own feeling using paint, drawing, form, rhythm or even actual natural matter on the canvas. …χάνομαι, από την άλλη, όλο και περισσότερο στο θέμα που με απασχολεί εδώ και πολλά χρόνια: στο νερό… ...εγκαταδύομαι, ψάχνοντας την προέλευσή μου/μας, υποθέτω… ...βουτάω στη ρευστή, διάφανη άπιαστη ύλη, με όρια ασαφή, χωρίς σχήμα και περίγραμμα, όπως τα πάντα γύρω μου, προσπαθώντας να κατανοήσω την δυναμική μέσα στην αστάθεια, πιστεύοντας κι ελπίζοντας, στην αέναη κίνηση και την ατέρμονη αλλαγή –κατ’ εξοχήν στοιχεία της φύσης– προσδοκώντας στην ισορροπία, το μέτρο και την αρμονία... ...βρίσκω τις απαντήσεις στην παρατήρηση της Φύσης· εκεί αφήνομαι.

…on the other hand, I find myself increasingly into the subject of water, which has preoccupied me for years... ...Ι immerse myself in it, looking for my/our origins, I guess… ..I dive into the fluid, transparent, ungraspable matter with no clear boundaries, no shape or outline like everything else around me, trying to understand the dynamic within instability; trusting in incessant motion and endless change –both key attributes of nature– and hoping for balance, measure and harmony... ...I find the answers in the observation of Nature; there, I let myself go.

Γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα το 1959. Σπούδασε Ζωγραφική στην Ανωτάτη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών της Αθήνας με δασκάλους τους Λ. Κανακάκη, Δ. Μυταρά, Ν. Κεσσανλή, Β. Κυριάκη, Ρ. Παπασπύρου, Mαρίνα Λαμπράκη-Πλάκα. Από το 1980 έως το 1983 σπούδασε Interior Design στο Fine Arts School of California State University of Long Beach, USA. Από το 1990 έως το 1992 και με υποτροφία του Ι.Κ.Υ. συνέχισε μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στη Ζωγραφική στην Εcole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris με τον Pierre Carron. Θεματικοί κύκλοι της δουλειάς της έχουν παρουσιαστεί σε πολλές ατομικές εκθέσεις και έχει συμμετάσχει σε πολυάριθμες σημαντικέςομαδικές εκθέσεις στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό. Έχει φιλοτεχνήσει πολλά ημερολόγια ιδιωτικών εταιρειών. Επιλέχθηκε να εκπροσωπήσει με το έργο της τη Σύγχρονη Ελληνική Τέχνη κατά τους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες του 2004. Στις 22 Σεπτεμβρίου 2008, στο πλαίσιο του Περιβαλλοντικού Προγράμματος του Μουσείου Γουλανδρή Φυσικής Ιστορίας και του Ραδιοσταθμού ΣΚAΪ, δώρισε έργο της με θέμα την Ελιά, το οποίο δημοπρατήθηκε και τα έσοδα προσφέρθηκαν στο Ταμείο των Δασών. Το έργο κατακυρώθηκε στη Βουλή των Ελλήνων. Έργα της βρίσκονται στη Βουλή των Ελλήνων, στην Εθνική Πινακοθήκη, στο Μέγαρο Μαξίμου, στο Μουσείο Μπενάκη, στο Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης της Φλώρινας, στο Μουσείο Φρυσίρα, στη συλλογή του Ομίλου Εταιρειών της ΑΓΕΤ Ηρακλής, στην Πινακοθήκη Κουβουτσάκη, στην Πινακοθήκη Μοσχανδρέου, στη συλλογή της Αγροτικής Τράπεζας, στη συλλογή Παπαστράτος και σε άλλες δημόσιες και ιδιωτικές συλλογές στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό.

She studied painting at the National Superior School of Fine Arts in Athens, Greece under D. Mytaras, L. Kanakakis, N. Kessanlis, V. Kyriaki, R. Papaspyrou, Μ. Lambraki-Plaka.

From 1980 to 1983, she continued studying Interior Designing at theFine Arts School of California State University of Long Beach,USA. From 1990 to 1992, on the Greek State Scholarship, she continued her studies in Painting at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, France, under Pierre Carron.

Her works can be found in the Greek Parliament, the Hellenic National Gallery, the "Megaro Maximou" (the Prime Minister building), the Benaki Museum, the Florina Museum of Modern Art, the Kouvoutsakis Pinacotheque, the Moschandreou Pinacotheque, the Fryssiras Museum, the Agricultural Bank of Greece Collection, the AGET Heraklis Group of Companies Collection, the Interamerican Collection, and other private museums and collections in Greece and abroad.

Her work was selected to represent Greek Contempoary Art during the Olympic Games of 2004.

On September 2008, as a part of the Enviromental Programme of the Goulandris Museum of Natural History and the SKAI Radio, she donated one of her works, which was auctioned and bought by the Greek Parliament. The proceeds were donated to the National Forest Fund.

She is considered to be one of the most important Greek Contemporary artists.

Inspired by Nature, her work is flirting with abstract and representative elements, at the same time.
