Reverend Petey Crowder was installed as Senior Pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church ON OCTOBER 4, 2020
Pastor Petey is the third Senior Pastor to serve in CPC’s 63-year history. A time of worship was highlighted with music, communion, and a sermon by Jay Lee, Executive Pastor of Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas. The installation participants were Doug Dahl and Judie Ritchie, ECO Presbytery of the Upper Midwest.

I
know that might be a weird thing to say and an even weirder thing to open a letter with, but it’s true. For me, Mondays provide a sense of normalcy and routine that sets the tone for the entire week to come. On those random weeks where we have a Monday holiday, I sometimes feel like I’m off balance for the following days, trying to recapture the structure of the week. If you’ve ever encountered the same experience, you’ve likely learned what I’ve learned the hard way—spending the rest of the week searching for Monday never goes too well; in fact, it often makes the discombobulation last far longer than it should.
love and power of God, knowing that though this feels like unprecedented chaos to us, it is not unprecedented to history nor to God.
I’m acutely aware that we are entering a new chapter in CPC’s wonderful history during what feels like unprecedented turmoil in our country and world. Nothing feels “normal,” and we aren’t assuming we’ll feel the comfort of old routines any time soon. So how can we reorient how we approach this ongoing season of disruption to embrace the possibilities God has for us?
Friends, let these truths work their way deep into your bones. We worship a God who has this under control. A God of hope and possibility. We shouldn’t try to wrestle control away; instead, let us faithfully obey Him as He calls us to participate in the world as, first and foremost, citizens of the Kingdom of God.
The third is that Jesus is still on the throne. He is on the throne regardless of which political party has the majority, whether schools are virtual or in-person, and regardless of which team the Vikings just lost to (kidding!). Jesus tells His followers that the world may seem out of control, but that they should never lose confidence in Him because He has overcome the world (John 16:33).
WE WORSHIP A GOD WHO HAS THIS UNDER CONTROL .
A God of hope and possibility. As Christ-followers, we have to begin our recalibration with truths about God, so I want to remind you of a few very important things. The first is there is nothing new under the sun (Ecclesiastes 1:9). We might feel like things are out of whack and that we need to do everything in our power to regain control. But perhaps we are learning that security by human means is an illusion. What if we saw ourselves not as victims in the midst of an unforeseen storm, but as contenders of God, standing in the gap of an amazing opportunity to bring the hope of Christ to bear on a hurting world? The second is that God is not surprised by this. He has come before this, He will come after this, and He is with us through every step of the journey (Deuteronomy 31:8). We feel out of control, but God is not. The church should demonstrate an unfathomable faith in the unseen
In October and November our worship series will delve into what worship—singing, praying, hearing God’s Word, Communion—means for the life we live outside the walls of the church. If we’re going to faithfully live as if God is in control during this chaotic season, we need practices that remind us He is trustworthy. And as we seek to be Kingdom citizens, these acts should orient us to His vision for our lives and the world. Let’s not waste our lives searching for Monday. If we spend our time trying to regain normalcy, we might miss the opportunities right in front of us—where God uses ordinary people to do the unprecedented. Let’s remember God’s goodness and faithfulness and trust that God is in control, even when we’re not.

Both services will continue to livestream through the CPC website to provide a quality worship experience online. Note, this is not a permanent change, just a response to current public health needs. We are committed to following the State of Minnesota guidelines for churches, which includes the use of a reservation system to ensure that worship attendance stays within levels that maintain social distancing and permit contract tracing. An RSVP is required every week you wish to attend.
CPC in Studio is a new worship experience, geared specifically for online viewing. This initiative features worship music, prayer, and the same sermon as the other services. Available at 6:00AM each Sunday morning, CPC in Studio can be streamed at the viewer’s convenience and is a great way to share a CPC worship experience with others.

In-Person Sunday School for Early Childhood! We are delighted to welcome our little ones to be loved and nurtured by our volunteers and staff while parents are engaged in worship. At this point, Sunday school is only available for ages 6 months-3 years old. An RSVP is required, and numbers are based on staff, volunteers, and the space we have available to safely care for the children. Sunday school is available at both service times (9:00 and 11:00AM). As followers of Jesus, our allegiance is first and foremost to Him. And it is in the act of worship that God leaves an imprint on our souls as we engage in practices that form us and align us with His vision. This October and November, our worship series will explore different elements of worship:

M
y husband and I are regular attenders and giving partners at CPC, but we had never been involved in a small group or Bible study until we participated in a Be the Bridge discussion group this summer. When I retired two years ago, I wanted to give myself a year to sort out what retirement looked like. Then last year I got involved with tutoring immigrants and refugees in Minneapolis, and I also decided to join the CPC choir. I don’t have that strong personal relationship with God that others in choir seem to speak about—or I don’t recognize it yet—but what happened to George Floyd really shook me to my core and made me pay more attention to what Jesus actually taught. I wanted to be more active and inquisitive in trying to understand my faith and how it intertwines with social justice at a deep level. If you look at Jesus’ life and words, He paid attention to the lowly, to the have-nots, to the left out. Time and time again. That model of standing up for people who can’t speak up for themselves, to include everybody in His grace, is so clear. When the news about George Floyd first broke, I realized I couldn’t just sit at home and say I’m a Christian and say I’m not racist. Words weren’t enough. I wanted to DO something, in some small or big way, to help make change. That’s what I think Jesus would want. I didn’t know what it was I could do, but then the email came from CPC, and the Be the Bridge discussion groups really interested me. My husband also wanted to participate. I was just really thrilled that there was something on this issue that we could do together alongside others from our church. I learned a lot about myself during Be the Bridge 101. I thought I knew a lot, but I realized I have a lot more to learn about systemic racism. It was helpful to challenge beliefs I didn’t even know I had. Learning about white fragility was new to me, and I’m much more aware now of my white privilege and understand it in a deeper way. This fall, I’ve been taking walks every morning and exploring new neighborhoods. I don’t even think twice about doing it—but in the last few days, it’s really hit me that I might not be doing this if I were Black. I would probably be concerned that I might be asked why I’m walking around here. I think the inequality of that is important to recognize. I don’t know what to do with it yet, other than I’m still raising my own awareness, attempting to understand the day-to-day impact of the system on people of color. The curriculum and discussions with my group led me to really understand on a deep level the difference between individual acts of racism and systemic racism, and what my role as a White person could be as I work for change. For me, that’s meant getting involved in some local groups and attending racial equity webinars. I’ve done a lot more listening and a lot less talking, which is different for me! In hearing different perspectives of what it’s like to be a person of color in America, I’ve realized this is a really complex, exhausting, daily experience for them. More often than not, they say it’s not worth confronting things. With my white privilege, I experience none of that. If I were experiencing this every day I stepped outside, every day at work, I’d probably pick my battles, too.

I’m trying to pay attention to microaggressions, as well. I live in a pretty lily-white new development in Chaska, and an East Indian family recently moved into our cul-de-sac. I noticed that the other families would get together in the cul-de-sac, but this East Indian family didn’t seem to get invited. That bothered me. I don’t know if it was intentional, but I think if you were that family, it would be hard not to conclude that being a family of color was the reason. So my husband and I went over and we invited them. It’s little things like that that I need to keep doing if I’m really trying to live out my faith as a follower of Jesus. I definitely feel that I’m on the beginning of a journey, and I don’t know where that journey is going to lead. I feel like the film’s been removed from my eyes, and I can more clearly see who Jesus is—and I’ve realized I need to be more actively involved in combatting racism as a follower of Jesus. Speaking out. Not being afraid to step on a few toes. I believe we all should consider what we can do both within our own hearts and outside ourselves to serve Christ and to promote a more just world.

Meet Petey Crowder: Senior Pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church
Reverend Petey Crowder comes to Christ Presbyterian Church with an impressive breadth of ministry and pastoral experience. Raised in Alabama, Petey has worked in churches and ministries that represent a range of geographical, cultural, and economic contexts: a college campus ministry in Oregon; young adult ministry at a large church in suburban Dallas; a pastor of missions in a downtown church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and finally, for the past three years, as Executive Pastor at Christ Presbyterian Church. Throughout his pastoral experience, Pastor Petey’s desire has been to share the saving grace of Jesus to those far from God—as well as to equip and motivate the church community to be “on mission” where God has placed them.

GLOBAL SNAPSHOT
How our Partners Are Responding to COVID-19. Food and financial security for so many around the globe has been further compromised because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of our partners have now doubled down their existing efforts to address these issues and serve their communities through great challenges. Here are a few ways God is using our international partners in the midst of COVID-19: In the Dominican Republic, International Justice Mission has worked to support trafficking survivors through the economic challenges of a country lockdown. Additionally, they have made major steps this summer and fall to petition the Dominican government to declare child marriage unconstitutional. Read more. In Zambia, World Vision’s team has been focused on limiting the spread of COVID-19 and reducing its impact on vulnerable children and families through teaching preventative behaviors, donating supplies to local governments, and working across sectors to protect women and children from increases in violence as the economic impacts of COVID-19 take hold. WV continues with their water projects around the country, drilling boreholes and teaching communities about clean water management. Amidst rising food insecurity and nearly doubling unemployment, Opportunity International in Colombia distributed basic necessities to communities they support in July. Our friends at Pars Theological Centre, which trains Christian leaders for the Persian-speaking world, distributed over $13,000 to refugee students to support them through COVID-19 related job loss.

Jeanne Dooley passed away on September 12 at the age of 77. She is survived by husband Mike.

Judy Martin passed away on March 25 at the age of 77. Victoria Wagner passed away on April 19 at the age of 50. She is survived by husband Daniel and children Shelby, Maxwell, and Mitchell. John Holman passed away on June 13 at the age of 85. He is survived by daughter Sue (Mark) Holman-Sutich. Fred Kraft passed away on June 15 at the age of 90. He is preceded in death by his wife and former CPC staff member, Donna. Mike Sutich passed away on June 19 at the age of 59. He is survived by brother Mark (Sue) Sutich. Shirley Klages passed away on June 25 at the age of 84. She is survived by daughter Karen (David) Hoops. Eric Droz passed away on July 4 at the age of 65. He is survived by sister Cathi Droz. Allan Cederberg passed away on July 5 at the age of 97. He is survived by son Paul (Mary) Cederberg. Helen Groth passed away on July 22 at the age of 97. She is survived by son David Groth. Brooks Nielsen passed away on July 25 at the age of 96. Gordon Otterlei passed away on July 26 at the age of 63. He is survived by wife Kathy and children Blake, Taylor, and Drew. Susan Taylor passed away on July 31 at the age of 51. She is survived by brother Scott (Katey) Taylor. Dr. Alvin ‘Bud’ Berglund passed away on August 7 at the age of 89. Karen Ciske passed away on August 16 at the age of 82. She is survived by husband Don. Jim Martin passed away on August 22 at the age of 96. He is survived by wife Kathryn. Raja Solomon passed away on August 29. He is survived by daughter Monica (Chris) Spiegler. David Wall passed away on August 30 at the age of 78. He is survived by sister JoAnn (Jeff) Hawthorne. Wallace Davis passed away in September at the age of 90. He is survived by daughter Carol (Rick) Marcantonio.
Mary Ann Tarbell MacLennan passed away on September 17 at the age of 87. She is survived by grandchildren Jack, Maggie, and Catherine.
Mary T. Shepherd passed away on September 24 at the age of 100. She is survived by son Andy (Julie) Turnbull and grandson Nate Turnbull Malone.

Erin Hettinger left her role as Student Ministries Coordinator on July 9. Byron McConnell continues his role as Graphic Designer and adds on the role of Music Library Associate on September 21. Josh Meyers left his role as Associate Director of Middle School on September 23. Claire Sweem transitions back to Communications Coordinator on September 29. Claire previously held the role of Room Scheduling Coordinator. Natalie Ringham joins the Student Ministries team as Student Ministries Coordinator on September 30. Ron Hawkins leaves his position as Transition Pastor. We are grateful for Pastor Ron and his time serving the CPC community during transition. Thank you for all you did for CPC! Heather Hood celebrated 35 years of employment in August. She serves as Director of Traditional Worship. Clare Anderson celebrated 15 years of employment in August. She serves as Operations Coordinator and Executive Assistant. Claire Sweem celebrated 10 years of employment in September. She serves as Communications Coordinator.

We are behind on giving revenue fiscal year-to-date by $76,326. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Christ Presbyterian Church has been on a prayer-filled journey over the past two years. When Pastor John Crosby announced his retirement, countless laypeople committed to investing hours of their time and expertise to both celebrate the ministry of the Crosbys and to do the preparation and work to create a smooth transition period while the new senior pastor search was conducted. This effort also extended through the announcement, vote, and assimilation of the new Senior Pastor. We extend a huge thank you for the dedication and faithfulness of those who served on these teams. NEW ELDERS AND DEACONS ELDERS CL ASS OF 2024 Karen Beadie
A lifelong love of music first led me to CPC more than thirty years ago. While singing in the CPC choir, I learned the Scriptural basis for the music, and this was the beginning of a longing to know Jesus more deeply. The CPC family walked alongside me as I celebrated life milestones such as marriage and the death of my husband, David. CPC has provided many opportunities for growth in my faith journey through worship, music, Bible studies such as In the Word, and a mission trip to Africa. I served on the Transition Pastor Search Committee, and as an elder, I look forward to growing in my love for Jesus and loving and serving others.
Tim Nasby
My wife, Kristi, and I have been members of CPC since 1998. We have raised our three sons in this wonderful church and they have all been part of Student Ministries. I have served as a deacon, been involved for fifteen years in the mentor/mentee program, and I also participate in the Marriage Mentors ministry. Throughout the years, CPC has been so loving, caring, and instrumental in our family’s life. When I was nominated to be an elder, I was both humbled and honored. I look forward to working hand-in-hand with CPC’s congregation and staff and can’t wait to see what God has planned as we transition into the next exciting chapter.
Brett Peterson
Approximately ten years ago, the Lord brought me and my wife, Mandy, to CPC. Little did we know that this body of believers would wrap us up in love and support as we experienced the loss of our second son, Chase. It was through CPC that we experienced the fullness of God’s grace as He used people to deliver our daily bread. Our family has now grown to six members, and I am humbled and honored to serve alongside this tremendous staff and congregation as an elder of CPC. I look forward to the ways God will continue to use this church to reach the lost and hurting with the Good News of the Gospel.
Leslie Turner
My husband, Justin, and I began worshipping at CPC about twelve years ago. Since then, God has blessed us, our three young kids, my parents, and my sister with a community here that helps us grow spiritually and feels like home. We have connected through Kids & Student Ministries, a small group, and most recently, I served as a co-chair for the Transition Pastor Search Team. It is humbling to me to serve our God as an elder for CPC. I am excited about our church’s future and pray that Jesus will speak so loudly to all of us that we can’t help but act both inside and outside of these walls to bring His Kingdom here.
