Abha Airport

The regional airport was a fast-paced project. I worked on developing construction documents for schedules for metal panel soffit and roof panels. I also developed renderings for preliminary design presentation to the client.

novartis building 3 italian pizzeria + office east hanover, new jersey 287,000 sqft

min

Novartis Oncology Consolidation Center Building Three is a 310,000 sf new office building for a master plan development of Novartis’ campus in East Hanover, New Jersey. The building is expected for completion in 2012 and it will house 800 open workstations, 120 seat restaurant, fitness center, and conference rooms. The pizzeria features a curved venetian plaster wall that define the served spaces and a suspended curved wooden ceiling that shape the interior seating space of the restaurant. The project challenges include designing around the unusual features of the geometries involved with the double curvature of the ceiling and coordinating with the structural, acoustical, and mechanical to manufacture and install the wooden ceiling.

SSI Tower Competition

The invited competition was to design a commercial complex that integrates with the existing Melia Hotel on site. The concept of the design is to incorporate flexibility and efficiency by ranging floor plates between two towers. This will result in accommodating both open plan layouts and housing for up to 85 people and offices. Each tower is enclosed on three sides, while the fourth or interior side is comprised of smooth curtain wall glazing. The double curvature of the tower averages sun exposure and creates a self shading opportunity.

New National Stadium Competition Rafael Vinoly Architects Tokyo, Japan

The stadium building is conceived as a forested hill which transforms the site into a new landscape that is continuously accessible for the enjoyment of the people of Tokyo. The retractable roof, a self supported cylindrical surface in fabric allows events to be held in any weather condition. Placing the stadium into the ground allows for a gradual descending route to each concourse level, in contrast to most stadiums’ traditional ascending access. This allows the visitor to experience a magnificent view of the entire stadium from the upper tier upon entering into the stadium.

Urban Rest Stop Competition Forman Park Syracuse, NY Public Installation

min

Afoam was awarded the commission as part of a two-stage design competition commissioned by UPSTATE. Urban Rest Stop will activate the park with a series of translucent polyester curtains, suspended on cables amidst the trees of the park. These curtains can be manipulated by visitors to create urban rooms, will be shaped by artists interventions, and serve as the backdrop for videos and performances. The scale of the installation is meant to provoke interest and attract people, who, once inside, gives them the power to shape and make their own environment within the city. An engagement element specifically lacking during during “urban renewal and the creation of the I-81 viaduct. After the installation, the components of the installation can be re-used along the connective corridor in a variety of configurations, from outdoor cinema to farmers market to high design construction fencing.

Urban Accordion

afoam was selected as one of the five finalist to develop the pavilion for FIGMENT on Govenors Island during the summer of 2014. Through mockups and studies with structural engineer consultants, we explored construction details to help realize our idea for expandable urban block. Four fabric ‘blocks’ expand and contract, creating different levels of enclosure to suit a range of programming, while the space contained by the structures forms a FIGMENT larger communal area for events and chance encounters between the juxtaposed City of Dreams Pavillion programs. Urban Accordion is a new urban condition: a flexible assembly for Govenors Island New York, NY serendipity and public events that fluctuates to meet users’ demands.”

afoam FIGMENT “Urban Accordion’ Our| proposal was-submiited on 29th of June, 2013.

smin@gsd.harvard.edu | christinemin.com

DREAM We notice the physical barrier between public and private, streets and building blocks. Throughout the day, there is a drastic shift in density, and use of these two spaces. Streets are where informal events happen, where we see breakdancers that attract bypassers creating a immediate nodal gathering. Buildings are destination, where people go to work, shop, dine, live. Many of such space serves for more privatized activities, and at the end of activities space are left vacant. What if there urban blocks can contract and expand when not used to give space for public activities. We imagine a simultaneous mechanism, meaning the contraction and expansion whenever public need more space. afoam - urban accordion

pocketPORT

Manhatten and its neighboring bouroughs have multiple means of transportation-there are three airports and numerous heliports in the greater NYC area. However, most residents must travel an extra 10 miles on average to travel to the airport from the city. The city is not directly connected to these airports and creating an easily accessible and efficient airport can be beneficial for more frequent air travel in the future.

Brooklyn Naval Yards, New York, NY Design Studio - Michael Pelken The design challenge was creating a 155,000 sqft airport in the existing site of the Syracuse University Brooklyn Navy Yards for a hypothetical client, Richard Branson, who is seeking a new building for his new business venture Virgin SolAir, a commercial airline for sports aircraft.

modusvivendi Korean DMZ B.Arch Thesis Syracuse University Advisors: Michael Pelken + Randall Korman

min

The thesis project is a prototype demonstration for developing the DMZ with ecological interest. The prototype is an ideal facility for functional and leisurely use of current residents and future users . The purpose for proposing an ecological intervention is not to reiterate the political militarized lines, but to preserve and strengthen the current populations’ existence and habitat. The project promotes an ecological lifestyle and physical setting that is both appropriate for the context of the environment—in the sense of physical site, climate, social culture and economies—and is appealing to a wide audience. Re-zoning the CCZ from a war zone to a habitable greenbelt will redefine land as a viable regional and cultural identity.

THE DMZ HAS ATTRACTED OUTSIDERS--INTERNATIONAL AND NATIONAL AUDIENCE--TO PARTICIPATE IN ECO-TOURISM. MANY SITES ALONG THE DMZ HAS BECOME AN ECO-DESTINATION THAT INTERACTIVELY ENGAGES VISITORS WITH THE LOCAL CULTURE AND ECONOMY. INVESTORS HAVE BEEN SEEKING TO DEVELOP THIS GROWING TOURIST ECONOMY.

INTERSECTION BETWEEN CCZ AND TRAIL

MAINSTREAM TOURISM AND URBAN ENCROACHMENT CAN LEAD TO DEPRECIATED LOCAL ECONOMY AND CULTURE THAT IS IMPORTANT FOR SUSTAINING THE ECOLOGY OF THE ENVIRONMENT WITHIN THE CCZ.

fiber, force __FORM

The spaces of the final proto-architectural spatial morphology are created by the juxtaposition of modules constructed of aramid and glass fibers laid on flexible carbon fiber tube frames. The banding of the three internal trefoils engage the topography and ramp up to upper levels while carving away a primary bifurcated circulation corridor and several secondary paths into the landscape. Two enclosing pitchers stem from the bifurcation of each of two trefoils and merge at their apexes to shelter the interior Siteless Design Studio - Achim Menges forms and delineate internal and external spaces. The resulting protoarchitecture provides a rich spatial experience through the forces in action. Harvard GSD

ready, set, EVACUATE Design Studio - Henk Ovnk Harvard GSD Risk + Resilience, Rebuild by Design

The method of finding disparity between the networks of public transit and daily interest are measured by overlaying the metric and graphic information. By drawing comparison between the metric and graphic space of vulnerabilities, the disjuncture between the traffic network’s proximity to destination and physical organization and road network on site can be seen as a cause for failure. By understanding the higher risks involved from transit, this analysis creates a hypothetical scene to quantify who and what geographic regions are at risk when it comes to finding medical safety. People who are traveling beyond the four-mile radius is cross more at-risk road intersections due to the increased number or others with the same destination point.

You’re Welcome London, UK Design Studio - Peter Cook Harvard GSD

min

You’re Welcome for what? this recipricoal expression stated before a “thank you” mentions expectations for future favors in return. An architecture club, unlike AIA or RIBA should be a place where architects can fulfill their cravings for unprecedented experiences. Such that the actions that will take place in this environment will appear to lift and deflect gravity. Visitors will enter beneath a glass bottom pool, pass through a skydiving simulation hall, and meander through napping quarters.
