Meet Your Neighbours ..... Interview with Dorothy King

My sister and brother-in-law’s 50th anniversary at the Westwold church. Grant,Brett,Dorothy and Judy

Nearly everybody in Westwold knows Dorothy, but not many know about the great part she has played in our community and what a versatile, gifted woman she is! Here’s a glimpse into the fascinating life and times of Dorothy. Dorothy was born at Monte Lake to Eddie and Ellen King in 1938, the fifth of their six children, and when she was four years old, they moved from the Gush property on Paxton Valley Road to the Willard Place (now Adair Pringle’s) in Westwold to take up farming. A year later, Dorothy started school and her teacher was Mrs. Robert Clemitson (Harry’s mother). Pg 8

We have had word from Leif Kjelstrup who lived on the Douglas Lake Road for many years with his wife, Karin. Leif would like the people from around Westwold to know that recently Karin passed away. Understandly Leif, who is 99, is devastated by the passing of his wife. He says that living in Westwold were the best years of their life.

LEGION NEWS By Eva Harvey

There was a good turnout for the February dinner; a lot of our snowbirds and vacationers are returning. The weather seems to be nicer here than many places in the States! Thanks to our diners, our cooks Peggy, Anje and Eva, our dishwashers Raeley and Jared, our bartender Joan and all those who helped. Great to have Terry back! One of our cooks, Irene, is waiting for surgery on her shoulder and we wish her success and speediness in her recovery. Happy birthday to Walter Mobbs, who celebrates his special day March 25th. Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding is Walt’s favourite dinner and his favourite vegetable dish is mashed carrots and turnips. Sooooo, that’s what we’re having this month. If you like that, thank Walt!!

If March is here, can spring be far behind? No, you can see it peeking out from under the snow already in the form of green grass! According to my calendar, Daylight Saving Time arrives on March 10th.........that seems early to me. The Legion dinner is March 16th and St. Patrick's Day is on the 17th (a great day for those who are Irish and those who want to be). We hardly have time to sober up and it's the Vernal Equinox ( a fancy term for SPRING) on March 20th......also seems early! For those of you who are looking for a special day that is a real holiday, with no work (for some), Good Friday is March 29th. Easter Sunday, the most holy day on the Christian calendar, is March 31st. Spring usually heralds the return of many birds. Lies Benedict noted the return of Canada geese on her property (they're probably eating that green grass)! Linda, keep an eye out for robins! I'll believe anything you tell me EXCEPT that you saw that flock of 10 all-male robins reported in Kamloops! How did you feel about the letter from Canada Post? Everybody I correspond with has my new address straight except the banks, the businesses and the government..........the big boys who charge me for their mistakes! AARRGH! “You probably know already that the robins have returned to our valley. A flock of them are in my garden eating dried up crab apples. Spring around the corner? Lies Benedict thanks for letting us know.

RCMP Report On February 9th at about 11:00 PM one of our officers was working in the area of Kamloops Vernon Hwy near Monte Lake, when he noticed a vehicle driving north at a high speed which crossed the centre line. Our officer activated lights and police sirens, the suspect vehicle then stopped approximately 3km before the Barnhartvale Road turnoff. As our officer got out of his police vehicle he noticed the driver put both hands outside his vehicle. The officer asked what was he doing and the driver said the vehicle was stolen. Our officer placed the man under arrest had him exit the vehicle. The female in the passenger seat was then advised to get out of the vehicle. The man stood up and started to run away on the east side of the highway into a nearby field. In his attempt to flee the suspect lost his shoe while running away. The 29 year old female from Kamloops was placed under arrest for possession of stolen property. The Police Service Dog Unit from Kamloops was called out for the male suspect who took off. The 32 year old suspect from Kamloops was arrested, without incident about 250 yards away. He had lost both shoes while running away and was cold and wanted to give up. He had hoped to run into the mountains in attempt to evade arrest. After he lost his shoes and with the light clothing he was wearing he felt it was not in his best interests to do that. He is expected to face charges of Possession of Stolen Property,Obstruction, and Flight from Police. The vehicle is an Alberta vehicle that was stolen from Kelowna. On January 25th just before noon the Vernon members were called to a residence in the 3400 block of Okanagan Ave to assist a property manager at that location. When the officers arrived they noticed two gun cases in the residence and arrested the one occupant for breach of weapons probation, breach of conditional sentence order. The 41 year old man was in possession of three firearms that were reported stolen January 24th, in the Armstrong area. The suspect who is well known to police has a lifetime ban on firearms

c as well as a Conditional Sentence Order not to possess any weapon. He has been remanded in custody, he is to appear in Vernon today. On July 17, 2012 the North Okanagan Rural members executed a search warrant for the production of cannabis marijuana at a residence at 9257 Winchester Rd off Westside Rd in Vernon. Inside the residence officers found 1005 marijuana plants in various stages of growth, a large marijuana drying stand with in excess over 600 grams of cannabis marijuana “bud” laid out to dry, three large Ziploc bags containing marihuana “bud” and a digital weigh scale. Officers also located equipment and paraphernalia consistent with marijuana production such as ballasts, non-code conforming electrical panel boards with timers, high wattage lights, and shrouds and fans. Characteristics observed in the residence consistent with it being a high value marijuana grow operation were: barricaded exterior doors, an exterior security gate and unsecured firearms. Business Banter

Remember last Saturday? It started out with a little sleet rain in the morning and the rest of the day was beautiful, sunshine with a hint of warmth in it, lovely time to have coffee with family. Jackie and Kel Taylor, my sister-in-law and her husband, stopped by and as my teacup chihuahua, Jesse Olive, sat and proceeded to do the 'chihuahua shake' on Jackie's lap we had an opportunity to talk a little about Jackie and Kel, their love for our valley and their ventures as the new owners and operators of Personal Touch Chocolates. I asked them what their favourite thing about living here in the area was and of course the answer was simple, the people and the beauty. Both Jackie and Kel were raised here, both went to school in Westwold when Mrs Harvey was a teacher, both carried on to Valleyview Secondary School. Being high school sweethearts they married in 1990 and went on to build a life together and raise two boys, Kaelen and Bryce. When asked what inspired them to get into the chocolate business Jackie is quick to say "Hey, I love chocolate!" and what better thing to do then have a job that inspires you to create both a decadent and visually appealing product you can be proud of. In February 2012 they purchased Personal Touch Chocolates and production began that March. With the help of Jackie's sister Bonnie they make and package all products at the Westwold Legion and from there take it to various craft fairs, farmers markets and other venues that support home based businesses. Currently you can find Personal Touch Chocolates at the Monte Lake Store, Twin Rivers Market in Kamloops, and on their website www.personaltouchchocolates. ca. Jackie and Kel say they're looking forward to Spring and the opportunity for growth. Personal Touch Chocolates will once again be carried by

the Westwold Carrot Company and are expanding into the Pond Garden Centre in Barnhartvale. In addition to custom chocolates Jackie and Kel also provide everything needed to create these tasty morsels in your own home: fondant, caramel, bulk chocolate, molds and more. I asked Jackie and Kel where they see their business in five years; Kel sees a storefront with big glass windows, Jackie sees the stainless steel kitchen in the back. Both dream of bigger things and both are willing to wade through the chocolate to get there. "Is there anything we haven't covered" I ask. "Yes," Jackie says, "We would like to thank the community, our customers, the Monte Lake Store, the Westwold Carrot Company , my Dad and Carol, my sister Bonnie and the rest of our family and friends for being not only supportive but fantastic chocolate critics." On a personal note, before this column ends, I want to thank my husband for being so thoughtful on Valentines Day, as well as Jackie and Kel for providing him with the dozen (or was it two?) delicious and not-so-easy-to-put-down chocolates. I ate almost the whole box by myself... wink wink ;)

EASTER CONFUSION by Gerald Smith

It was springtime in Victoria, back in '92, when we got rid of the single wide and were building a house. We invited one of the workmen to bring his family to our farm for an Easter egg hunt. He arrived Easter Sunday afternoon with his wife and two young girls, ages 4 and 6, both eager to search for eggs. While touring the farm with baskets in hand, the girls would find little chocolate treasures wrapped in colourful foil. The excitement grew when we arrived in the part of the barn that housed the Angora rabbits. Two wide-eyed children with baskets in hand, soft fluffy bunnies and numerous beautifully wrapped chocolate eggs was one of the memorable moments of life. Next stop on the tour was the henhouse, where little red hens laid real eggs. The girls became very busy, collecting and sorting eggs. They carefully placed

March 2013 the chocolate eggs into the Easter baskets and the real eggs into our large egg basket; another memorable moment of excitement. As we were leaving the henhouse, all baskets now full, I asked them, "Where do eggs come from?" Both girls paused on the path and we could see the wheels turning as they were deep in thought. "We collected chocolate eggs from rabbits. We collected chocolate eggs and real eggs from chickens." The pause ended as suddenly as it started. The youngest girl skipped away exclaiming, " RABBITS!" In those days I was just as confused about the reason for Easter as those girls were about the origin of Easter eggs. It would be ten years before I understood that Easter was more than a mystical rabbit laying chocolate eggs. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son,that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 When I understood that God loved me enough to have His Son Jesus die for me, to save me from eternal death, and raise Him back to life again that I may share eternal life with Him, I was no longer confused about Easter. It has been another ten years of knowing the joy and peace of God's love, as well as all those years of enjoying chocolate eggs! I pray that by God's amazing grace I will be blessed with many more decades living in His love. I also pray that all will find God's great love, as they too come to understand the true meaning of Easter. He who has the Son, has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. John 5:12 May you be blessed with the understanding of God's love and may your Easter basket be full of delicious treats, even chocolate eggs! Pastor Gerald Smith 6

Interview with Dorothy King ..continued fromPage 1. Dorothy has always been involved with cattle and horses, but when her brothers Tom and Ken joined 4-H, she was too young to join. A neighbouring rancher, Joe Bulman (now Harold and Kristy Hough’s) gave her a Holstein calf to put in the open class.Dorothy became a 4-H member and was active in the Club until after she had children! She spent many years riding horseback and driving the cattle truck with her dad. His words as they were sliding backwards down a hill with a load of cattle, “You can do anything you put your mind to.” And that has been Dorothy’s credo. After graduating from Kam High in 1957, Dorothy worked in the Bank of Montreal in Kamloops, and a year later married Orville Rottenfusser. Four children followed: Judy, Grant, Julie and Brett. The family moved around, then returned to Westwold and lived at the Lucas Ranch until they bought the Wessel house (now Trevor and Joanne Caldwell’s). Versatile Dorothy volunteered at the Westwold Fall Fair, helped at the Sunday School when Reverend and Mrs. Abbott lived in the vicarage ‘63-’67, raised beautiful roses, was a talented pitcher for the Falkland Ladies’ Softball Team, and later managed a restaurant in Falkland for about seven years. Dorothy’s busy life was shattered in 1967, when six-year-old Julie was struck and killed while crossing in front of the Westwold School. With the support of the whole community, picket lines and town meetings were held, and finally a speed zone and a crosswalk were put in front of the school. Dorothy and Orville became the cemetery caretakers, having to haul water in barrels to keep the grass green. Dorothy’s life took another sharp turn in 1981, when Walter Mobbs knocked on her door and asked her if she was interested in becoming a school bus driver. Yes! Walter quickly taught her the ropes, she was hired and for twentytwo years she happily drove the Westwold school children. Dorothy loved the kids, giving

A 25 lb. Spring Salmon taken on a fishing trip to the north of Vancouver Island

them prizes, teaching them road safety, and dressing up for them at Hallowe’en (Try driving a bus in a prom dress and tiara). Dorothy has been a member of the Monte Lake Outdoor Life Club for over twenty-five years, five of which she was the president. She has always loved the outdoors and is a natural athlete, so this is the perfect club for her. She has fished both fresh and salt water, and claims her crowning achievement was catching a twenty-five pound spring salmon off the coast near Prince Rupert. From 1987, Dorothy has been involved in competitive shooting, travelling as far as Fort Stockton, Texas. She belonged to the former International Handgun Metallic Silhouette Association for many years. Her marksmanship earned her the Canadian High Lady Aggregate Handgun Trophy in 1994 and 1995. She also shoots big bore and small bore long guns and once won the Vernon High Aggregate Trophy, and twice won the M.L.O.L.Club trophy. She still goes hunting 8

www.westmontnews.ca every fall, though now she does more shooting with her camera than her gun! Dorothy’s excellent eye has served her well in the art world also, and painting is her winter pastime. Both her paintings and her photographs reveal her talent. In the summer she gardens, and enjoys her flowers and yard. Now with five beautiful grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Dorothy counts herself blessed to still be able to jump on the trampoline with them! (She can still run a power saw and a sewing machine, too, folks!) Dorothy is also blessed in owning ten acres that were originally part of the ranch her great-grandfather, the pioneer Henry Ingram, owned. Ingram Creek runs through her property and down to the Salmon River. The Ingram-King family cemetery is located on the hill adjacent to Dorothy’s property, and at Christmas you can see the huge shining star that she placed up there for all to enjoy. In The Forest Diane McCannel

It was an eventful day with wild critters. Unfortunatly there were a couple of casualties. Eagles and other preditors including my dog had a good lunch provided by natures ways and then 4 hours later there is awful screaming up the mountain after 1.5 hours of trying to figure out what and where this poor creature was . My friends came down to help deal with the situation when what should appear but 2 bears .mama made it to their den and I think last years cub dragged itself up the mountain screaming the whole way . I think in a hibernated coma state it perhaps fell off a cliff and perhaps is paralized as it was dragging it’s back half up to their den. It was a sad day in the forest. Hope the bear heals. They did get to their den and there is not much we can do now. will phone forest rangers types in the morning by the time I found them the sun was going down and they were almost in there den. tears in the forest today
