Corner Addition date _ Spring 2018 resolution _ Design Development location _ Charlottesville, Virginia scale _ Institutional project type _ Building Addition A phased addition to the west end of University of Virginia’s School of Architecture building. (second year graduate design development studio, instructors; Luis Pancorbo & Ines Robles)

Campbell Hall is the School of Architecture building at UVA. Originally a 1970’s Brutalist-style building the school has already received a series of modern additions. The project is yet another addition, addressing the existing formal and structural context of Campbell Hall while resolving the programmatic demands of an expanding student body. The design takes advantage of a two phase construction process. Sustainability is accomplished through the use of two different wooden structural systems. The first system is of prefabricated CLT panels that span over the corner of the existing building. The second is a glulam-joint based truss that spans over the remainder of the west wing of Campbell Hall. The resulting form integrates with the existing formal context. Spatial relationships created by the interaction of two structural systems allow for an expanded potential of architectural education.

Variety and Density date _ Spring 2017 resolution _ Conceptual Design location _ New York, New York scale _ Urban Form project type _ High Rise Exploring an approach for creating formal and spatial complexity at the urban scale. (first year graduate foundation studio, instructor; Manuel Bailo)

Hudson Yards is one of the last opportunities for large scale development in New York City. This project reacts to the high-end developmental plan for Hudson Yards, exploring a less refined ideal for urban scale form. A city-block scale site plan establishes large public ramps, stairs, gardens and public amenities oriented towards the external context. This context includes the High-line Park and the western waterfront. Features are also organized around an internalized industrial network. This network is comprised of the inflow, manipulation and output of materials. Upwards from the site plan 2dimensional diagrams are developed through established internal and external spatial relationships. Parameters such as public space, fire stairs, elevators, bath houses, community spaces, city views, solar angles and wind vectors are referenced within a structural grid. The result is a diversity of vertically oriented spaces. Finally, a composite of digital modeling and hand drawing iterations are used to uncover a variety of vertical spatial relationships in section.

Civic Platforming date _ Fall 2014 resolution _ Schematic Design location _ Seattle, Washington scale _ Urban Fabric type _ Civic Building A series of ‘public urban platforms’ creating flexibility on Seattle’s waterfront. (third year undergraduate studio, instructor; Bradford Watson)

Seattle is one of many cities focusing on the redevelopment of its urban waterfront district. The prompt of the project was to design a civic space that reacted to the waterfront context while drawing conceptually from humanities modern relationship to water; a ‘Hydrology Institute’. In response I focused on developing a flexible civic space that related directly to the surrounding context. Diagramming and mapping techniques were explored in search of form and organization. Wide open platforms create a dynamic interface between civic programs. Spaces shift from private to public through changes in transparency of the envelope and interior walls. A curtain wall design encloses the building while emphasizing transparency towards the public waterfront. Accessibility to upper levels is encouraged through multiple open stairs that also perform structurally. The design creates an open forum for civic events revolving around education and research about water.

Gallery in a Field date _ Spring 2017 resolution _ Schematic Design location _ Charlottesville, Virginia scale _ Rural project type _ Gallery A gallery elaborating on the experience of a rural Virginian field. (graduate design development course, instructor; Michael Petrus)

The site is an open field just outside of Charlottesville Virginia. The building is a small gallery. The approach to the design relied heavily on repeated site visits to establish ideas about materiality, space and experience. I focused on my own reactions to the field; a slight topography, views of distant mountains and a path that cut from a stone gate across the grass. Repeated hand drawing, drafting and painting as well as a series of simple models revealed a basis for a material, spatial, experiential design. Brick glass and wood are used to create unique lighting within a simple gallery with a slanted roof. Interior partitions provide structural support for the roof trusses while orienting people towards distant mountain views enabled by the fields topography. The entrance of the building is marked, integrating with the experience of passing the stone gate and moving across the field. A brick wall encourages a passerby to step off the path into the gallery itself.

Hybrid Structure date _ Fall 2015 resolution _ Schematic Design location _ Bozeman, Montana scale _ Urban Fabric project type _ Hybrid Program Contemporary programming creates depth while remaining sensitive to historic downtown Bozeman. (fourth year undergraduate studio, instructor; Maire O’Neill Conrad)

Bozeman Montana is a town experiencing and attempting to deal with population growth. The challenge of the design was to develop a innovative-contemporary reaction to a subtle site in historic downtown Bozeman. The project was to design a hybrid-program building for Downtown Bozeman. Living in Bozeman for three years I used mapping and diagramming strategies to look deeply into the context, developing programs, aesthetic and conceptual ideas from Main Street. Building scale, programs already existing on and around the site and the long-term relevance of the new design were of primary concern. The design suspends an expansive atrium between two buildings that draw formally, aesthetically, materially and programatically from the existing context. Large steel trusses and a dynamic envelope create an open-ended space that can remain relevant to a growing city. Simultaneously the design emphasizes a respect for the scale of the downtown fabric.
