Semester Summary

After completing Design 2, the knowledge ofArchitecture has been broadened. Famous works of design have been brought into focus. As well as inspiration from famous architects and designers. Each project had a correlation to the first. The first project began with choosing a house and recreating a smaller model of it.The concepts that could be taken from project 1 became the base for project 2.

Choosing three concepts was the task for creating an abstract model that showed them.Taking Ideas from both project 1 & 2 helped formulate the design process for project 3. Designing an individual Cabin based off the concepts of project 2 and bringing inspiration from project 1 to guide the design

Falling Water

Elizabeth Hussey, Gurami

Okropiridze, and Chris Sabatino

Research

● Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright

● Falling water is located in the Laurel Highlands of Southwest, PA.

● Completed in 1973

● Frank Lloyd designed Fallingwater for the Kaufmann Family, Edgar Jonas Kaufmann was a man with distinctive taste, & enjoyed collaborating with Wright.

● Fallingwater was inspired by the Kaufmann’s love for Bear Run’s rushing waterfalls.

Environment of Falling Water

● Fallin Water’s terrain consists o rid es, plateaus, steep slopes, & dramatic or es.

● Fallin Water’s landscape has been trans ormed by water & rock – multiple layers o sandstone, shale, & limestone were orced up into parallel rid es, creatin the stream we know as Bear Run.

● Variety o plant li e thrives in the environment o Fallin water. The Appalachian Oak orest is dominant in the re ion, which also supplies rich soil.

Falling Water Inspiration

● Wri ht sou ht to redefine the relationship between man, nature, & architecture.

● The house was desi nated as a UNESCO World Herita e Site

● Wri ht’s idea or the house:

○ creatin a nature retreat

○ Inte ration o the settin within the home, where lass meets stone walls, without the use o metal rames, & incorporatin broad expanses o window and balconies.

Project 1 Reflection

Underestimating the amount of work it may take to accomplish a project was something to be considered after Design 1.Taking that idea into Design 2 was a completely different task to undergo. Working with partners meant more work for a project to be completed. It was difficult to arrange getting things accomplished due to lack of communication at the beginning.Toward the second half of project 1, communicating had become more involved and things were being completed. Because of the lack of communication in the beginning, completion was not accomplished. Moving forward working as an individual or a group, arrangements need to be set before anything is to be started.

Project 2 Reflection

Confusion is what began with project 2. Instructions were to take three concepts that can be gathered from project 1 and create them in an abstract concept drawing. After creating the abstract drawing and coming up with the three concepts that were portrayed, next was to create it as a model. The model was very similar to the concept drawing. In this project, learning to advance ideas and making more progress was huge to take away. Keeping that in mind was important for many future projects.

Project 3 Reflection

Taking what was learned from Project 1 & 2 formulated the process for the final project. Keeping up and accomplishing work on time needed to be achieved. Not only completing the jobs on time, but the quality as well.Through the project, quality was being accomplished to a good extent. As final drawings began come into the works, perfecting them was a failure. To much time was spent on finding design features for the house itself, and not enough time was given to complete other aspects of the project. After completing project 3, understanding what it takes for a design to be proper enough to move forward needs to be implemented into future processes. This also means equality of time spent on certain portions needs to be understood.
