Evergreen Club: Cancer care The next session of the Evergreen Club for the over 50s, which meets at Ambleside Parish Centre from 2-4pm on Wednesdays, is on September 28, entitled Cancer care: a personal journey with Susie, Andrea and Joan. Afternoon Tea and Entertainment On Sunday 9th October: 2.30 – 4pm Kelsick Centre Ambleside. An opportunity for older people who would be alone on a Sunday afternoon to get together for company is being hosted, free of charge, by Ambleside Kirkstone Rotary Club. ‘Notable Women’ Quiz To raise funds for the Women’s Institute, Rydal have produced a quiz based on some local and world renowned women. Prizes of vouchers have been kindly donated by Hayes Garden World, The Salutation Hotel and Zeffirelli’s Cinema. Quiz sheets are available at £1.00 each from many local shops and from members of Rydal WI. The closing date for entries is Dec.3rd 2016.

When you walk into the Kelsick Centre the first thing you notice is the smell – gorgeous fragrances from a sea of blooms assail the senses. This is the Ambleside Horticultural & Craft Society summer show, but as its official title suggests – Ambleside Summer Flower, Produce & Craft Show – every year there is much more than just flowers on offer. All around the edge of the main hall was home-made produce of the lip-smacking variety: cakes, pastries, chocolate brownies and more. Oh to be a judge! Talking of which, Joanne Dann was on hand to pass an expert verdict on flowers and ferns and this time it was official. The owner of nearby Lily-Lou’s florest was drafted in for the daffodil and spring flower show at the last moment when a judge failed to turn up but got a little more notice this time! from the family archives’. Appropriately, it was taken in 1944 and shows her mum, her baby brother, her gran and her aunt. Once again, the show was a success, with chairman David Capstick well pleased with the turnout.

Windermere WI events and dates for your diary. On Thursday October 6 Sarah Nelson/Laura Wyatt will be talking about where they work, the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop. The Competition will be A homemade gingerbread man. The following month Thursday November 3

is the Annual General Meeting when the speaker will be a WI Advisor and the competition on that occasion is to make a winter arrangement in a cup! On Thursday the 20th October there will be a Rummikub Afternoon Tea 1:30 Marchesi Centre

- All welcome, so do please come along to support. WI Meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month at 7:30 in the Marchesi Centre. A warm welcome awaits existing members and visitors too.

The local U3A is hosting a Talk entitled “Ambleside’s Tourism in Historical Perspective” at the Marchesi Centre, Windermere at 2.15pm on Monday 10 October. The talk will be given by Dr Mike Huggins, Emeritus Prof of Cultural History, University of Cumbria, and will explore the history of tourism in Ambleside and the challenges it faced from other towns from the 1760s onwards, and then from the national shift in tourist demand from the 1960s. All are welcome (non-members £2.00).
