Fire Chief reviews budget, renews trainee request

MPAC reaching out to northern leaders

By Chris Marchand

After several years of battling the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) for its failure to protect northern forestry communities from massive losses in industrial assessment, Dryden Mayor Craig Nuttall says he is finally satisfied that someone within the institution might be listening. Nuttall says he and a variety of municipal representatives from across the north met with MPAC Board Chair Dan Mathieson, also the Mayor of Stratford, last week in Thunder Bay. As much as he’d like to believe it was his and seven other forest communities’ persistence on the issue, Nuttall says that the problems that plagued northern municipalities as a result of MPAC ‘broken’ system for large industrial assessment are now starting to manifest themselves in industrial centres in southern Ontario. “I’ve found that the

City of Dryden Fire Chief Ken Kurz appeared before council, Monday to re-submit a request to appoint a dozen new firefighter trainees in an effort to begin their training as soon as possible. Presented in Kurz’s absence in January, the issue sparked a heated discussion among councillors about careful review of pre-budget spending approvals and even a review of volunteer firefighter staffing levels when it appeared the department was requesting approximately $67,000 in additional funding over last year’s budget. But that may not have been the case as Kurz returned with a budget package showing a lineby-line comparison to 2014 — showing just nominal increases in some areas. Training costs for the recruits will run around $10,500 with the recruit fire program requesting just $6,000 in additional funds over last year. The department’s wages and benefits will jump by around $19,000 in 2015 as the City was picking up part of Deputy Fire Chief Cam MacMillan’s salary in 2014 for his role as Health and Safety Coordinator. Fire Service staff draw wages and benefits of $279,357. Volunteer Fire pay levels (based on attendance to fire calls or training) remain largely static and Kurz says the department only spent $108,062 of its

$124,000 budget in 2014 on account of a lower than average number of incidents and fewer responders on average. Kurz says the department currently features 49 active volunteers, seven short of a full complement of 56 — as recommended by the Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal in a 2009 Master Fire Plan study. “Our levels are determined by our risks and the needs of the community which are increasing,” said Kurz. “Our building stock is aging, our people are aging, our highway is as busy as it has ever been through town.” Of those 49 trained volunteers, Kurz says just 19 are permitted to leave their work in the case of a fire call during the day. He says the Fire Service draws an average of 11 to 12 volunteers out per call, far fewer than the ideal 18 firefighters in 10 minutes to an urban call, or 24 to a rural, or pulp mill fire incident. “We need to train our members to respond safely to emergencies,” said Kurz. We are the employer in this room and if we don’t train properly, we are creating the risk and the hazard. As the Fire Chief I can only advise you that with the budget cuts we’ve had over the last couple of years we are not meeting our mandated, council-set levels of emergency services, proactive education and emergency response training. These are levels that are dangerous and we’re here to advise you of that as council.”

By Chris Marchand

(MPAC) Chairman Dan Mathieson was very receptive and more or less admitted to us that MPAC was broken and needed to be fixed,” said Nuttall. “One of the things I didn’t realize is that a lot of legislation may have to be passed to make the changes. He, more or less, was asking for our support and I said ‘yes’ I would support him.” The City of Dryden has disputed a 2013 decision of the Assessment Review Board which dropped the local pulp mill’s value by approximately 70 per cent, leaving the city indebted to the mill to the tune of $7.8 million in retroactive tax refunds. Repayment of those funds is currently stayed. The situation and subsequent political pressure applied by a coalition of northern communities led to a government review of MPAC’s performance and 26 recommendations to strengthen the property assessment system. Nuttall says political

appointees to the Assessment Review Board, while being neither qualified, nor accountable have made some very destructive decisions that some northern communities may not survive. “The people who are appointed to the ARB aren’t really qualified to make a decision on a pulp mill or any large industrial site,” said Nuttall. “These are people that have perhaps sold real estate and stuff like that. That’s another big concern.” Nuttall says he was most encouraged by Mathieson’s efforts to strengthen relations with northern Ontario municipalities. “He said that they would be having board meetings in Thunder Bay at which time we would be invited to participate, which is really different,” said Nuttall. “It’s always been southern Ontario that’s hosted the board. He’s been quite honest in saying that Northern Ontario has been ignored for numerous years.”

form of tankers and manpower. Fire services set up a tanker shuttle from a nearby creek and crews from Wabigoon and Dryden Fire Service contained the fire to the single house. A nearby garage was not affected. Preliminary investigation shows the fire starting in the front of the house likely in the kitchen. There is no exact cause determined at this time. The homeowner was out of the house at the time and no injuries resulted. The house is a total loss.

Fundraiser for Machin’s Miles By Dryden Observer Staff Vermilion Bay residents Scott McEwen and Lori Miles are humbled by great support for a fundraising dinner held Feb. 7 at the Lions Hall. Despite the snowy weather the event drew approximately 200 people

from as far as Stonewall, MB and Thunder Bay to support Lori Miles. Miles was recently diagnosed with the rare blood disorder Calciphylaxis and has been undergoing treatment in Thunder Bay. In a thank you note posted on Facebook, Miles wrote: “How I am able to

express my sincere response on the support that Scott and I have come to appreciate. Words cannot articulate our gratefulness and love we have for our community. When Scott got hurt 25 years ago we saw firsthand the compassion this community can give.” Spearheaded by the

Vermilion Bay Kinettes and most of the other local clubs, and MC’d by Susan Pelland, the event raised approximately $12,000. There was a great meal served, tons of donated prizes, and delicious pies. The dance after was well attended and a crew from the Bayview kept the refreshments flowing.

The province has completed phase one of consultations on the Moose Project and is now inviting Ontarians to provide feedback on proposed changes the government is putting forward to help further address declining moose populations. Recent moose population surveys have shown declining numbers of moose in some areas of northern Ontario as well as Manitoba and Minnesota. The Moose Project is looking at what can be done to sustain desired levels of moose populations in response to pressures, such as predators, parasites, hunting, climate and changing habitat. The province has taken actions to address declining moose populations including reducing the number of moose tags issued during the 2014 hunting season. “This posting represents our response to the first phase of consultations as we work to address the declining moose population as evidenced from our moose aerial inventory,” said Ontario Mininster of Natural Resources and Forestry Bill Mauro. “The phase two consultations will be used to further define our response to bring forward additional options to be considered for implementation.” As part of the Moose Project, Ontarians will be able to provide input by commenting on an Environmental Registry Posting proposing changes that could be implemented

starting in the 2015 moose hunting season. Feedback and input can also be provided on what other potential actions can be taken in 2016 and beyond to address the broad range of pressures on moose populations. There are two ways to provide feedback: * Completing a short online survey. * Commenting on regulatory proposals in notice 012-3413 on the Environmental Registry. Protecting Ontario’s moose population and biodiversity supports the government’s economic plan for Ontario. The four-part plan is building Ontario up by investing in people’s talents and skills, building new public infrastructure like roads and transit, creating a dynamic, supportive environment where business thrives and building a secure savings plan so everyone can afford to retire. “The Northwestern Ontario Sportsmen’s Alliance (NOSA) supports the Minister’s decision to look at new harvest management strategies being proposed under the Moose Project to stop the decline of the moose population in the northwest,” says John Kaplanis, President, Northwestern Ontario Sportsmen’s Alliance. “Though no single moose management strategy alone will stop the decline, we are encouraged by the Minister’s commitment to address other factors impacting moose populations in the northwest. NOSA looks forward to working with the Minister on that next phase of the Moose Project.”

Vaccination: Reason is failing ith the recent outbreaks of Measles all over W North America, just about everyone seems to be taking a run at the anti-vaccination movement this week. So it should be. But will finger-wagging and well-reasoned, peer reviewed science-based arguments make a difference in convincing those ardent anti-vaxxers that their kids (and everyone else’s they put at risk) need more than essential oils to protect them from diseases which they should not have to suffer, or even die from, in an age where they could easily be eradicated? It hasn’t convinced them yet. Why not? Why doesn’t it matter to anti-vaxxers that the only tenuous link to their argument over vaccines and autism has been thoroughly debunked as a not only a hoax, but a financially motivated fraud? My conclusion is that because to a certain subset of the population who claim the right to shape their reality as they see fit — it just doesn’t matter. It’s what they choose to believe. Anti-vaxxers are not some modern phenomenon either. They’ve existed as long as vaccines have. Before that people of the Middle Ages refused to bathe in the belief that it was bad for health. Just as we have museums dedicated to the religious based pseudo-scientific belief that our planet is 6,000 years old, there are welcoming communities and support structures to reinforce these ideas, foster a sense of ‘enlightenment’ and isolation from those who might argue otherwise. From the Luddites, to the Amish to modern Libertarians to Isis, fundamentalism — religious or secular — is an unfortunate characteristic of our species. Like any fundamentalist belief, it can be tolerated insofar as it doesn’t pose a threat to the health and freedom of others in larger society. And well, this appears to be one of those situations where a group of irresponsible people need to be marginalized and excluded from the rest of the herd. — Chris Marchand

Letters to the editor

Neighbours helping neighbours with snow To the editor, I wanted to give a shout out to the people in our community who helped out with snow removal last week. As

I drove down different streets, there were several people out blowing, plowing and shovelling driveways that were not their own. It's acts of

kindness like this that makes Dryden a great place to live. Sherry Ambridge Dryden

Medicare his was first written about 10 T years ago, as part of a presentation to our then MP Roger Valley. I suggested that as in everything government touches, bureaucracy has made our medical system unaffordable and it needs to be rethought, and I offered some ideas from a patient’s point of view. Such as protecting doctors from lawsuits so they do not have to do duplicate consultations and testing. Such as giving patients some responsibility, by charging a modest ‘user fee’, and by providing them an annual statement of what the system did for them, so they would be a check on the system and allow a reduction in the bureaucracy. Ten years later, the bureaucracy and costs continue to grow, and I fear the continued evolution of the system will not be for the better. I thought it worth regurgitating the letter here, with a ‘future’ scenario added. Food for thought. CONVERSATION, 40 YEARS AGO Patient - Doctor, I have a sore ass. Doctor – Well, drop your drawers, and let me have a look. My goodness, that’s a dandy boil you have on your butt. Let me get my trusty scalpel and I will lance it for you. This will hurt a little. Patient – Ouch! Doctor – Wow, look at all that pus and goo. Okay nurse you can bandage that up now. Sir, you will have to sit on the other cheek for a few days, and

if this doesn’t heal up in six months or so, you come back and see me. Patient – Gee, thanks, doc, what do I owe you? Doctor – Oh, five bucks ought to cover it. SAME INCIDENT NOW Patient – Doctor, I have a sore ass. Doctor – Well, let’s make an appointment for a physical exam. (2 weeks later) Well sir, it appears you have a ‘fulminating bacterial subcutaneous eruption’ (or some similar medical gobbledy-gook which will give the patient bragging rights to dominate the conversation at, say, 4 coffee breaks at his place of work). We will take blood for about 7 different lab tests, and schedule you for an appointment to see the surgeon, probably in about 2 weeks. Here is a prescription for about $200 worth of painkillers. Surgeon (one month later) – We need to schedule you for an MRI, a cat scan, an ultrasound, and two x-rays, and I will see you in about 2 weeks: Surgeon (another month later) – Tests confirm you have an FBSE, and

we will have to do corrective surgery on that. You are scheduled for surgery in 6 weeks. (Six weeks later), boil is lanced under local anaesthetic, requiring the attendance of an anesthesiologist, two nurses, and a prescription for another $200 worth of painkillers. Patient is advised to make an appointment to see your general practitioner to check up on this in a month. Six months later, an army of bureaucrats complete the transfer of government money to the hospital, the pharmacies, the professionals, all at an administration cost of only about 50%. Total final cost, Oh, about $200 000. SAME INCIDENT, 10 YEARS FROM NOW Patient – Doctor, I have a sore ass. Doctor – I see you are over the age of 75. We might be able to do some triage, drop your drawers and I will have a look. Oh, it looks like it is just a boil; perhaps your wife can lance it with a sterile kitchen knife. Our system will not allow me to do surgery on those over 75, the only option I can offer you is our ‘Happy Transitions’ program for seniors. If you choose that option, I suggest you go home and make sure your affairs are in order. Come back whenever, you do not need an appointment for the nurse to administer the fatal injection. Have a good day. Total cost, about 5 bucks. Full circle.

t -32 Celsius, -39 with the wind A chill, you'd think that foxes would have better things to do than play on the chip piles. Last Wednesday was a bitterly cold day, with the wind blowing across the open field in chiphandling, it felt like every bit of minus 39. When I went along the North side of the chip pile I noticed two fox tracks angling up the side of the pile. A hundred feet from where the foxes had reached the top of the pile were two very different tracks coming straight down the face of the pile. When they leapt down, they left big holes in the snow about five to eight feet apart. I think it was two foxes, if one had gone up twice it would have walked in the same tracks, the snow was 6 inches deep on that part of the pile. I wonder if foxes dare each other to jump. The interweb says that mating season for foxes can start in December, I'm guessing that it is later than that here. A female fox may have taken a male up for a fitness challenge to see if he was suitable mating material. Red Foxes have a two

month pregnancy, then the kits nurse off the mother for seven weeks, they depend primarily on the mother for food for several weeks after that. During haying season in July here, the young are still close to the den, though they are out of the den on sunny days. Sources on the web say that the fathers help with the feeding of the kits and will take over 100 per cent if the mother is killed when the kits are young. Red Foxes come in a variety of colours here- red, brown, grey, silver and black. A pretty Cross Fox (black with a white cross between her shoulder blades) had her litter near our house in the spring of '09. Roger

couldn't believe me when I said she chased the cows away from the fence when her kits were playing on the road. The internet has some notes about how fierce the mothers can be around their litters. Forty odd years ago I was taught that Red Foxes were brought to North America by Europeans, which they were, but there were already some here. Fossil evidence shows that two waves of Red Foxes came to North America during the last two ice ages. Red Foxes introduced to Australia are a terrible nuisance, so much so that they are rated as one of the worst invasive species in the world. It's always open season on foxes in every part of Australia. An Aussie visitor described how they mount two 12 gauges and a spot light on a swivel on the back of a ute (pickup). The shotguns are automatics rigged to fire at the same time when they go out at night blasting foxes. Not exactly the fox hunting the upper class twits had in mind when they brought foxes to Australia.

Internet Outdoors: Don’t believe everything you see he Internet has really T changed communication in the fishing, hunting and outdoor world. There was a time when bait stores and coffee shops were the main source of information about hot bites and who got what, when. Oh how quaint that all seems in these days of text messaging, Twitter and Facebook. Today, hook and bullet news travels around the globe in seconds. The influence of the Internet was obvious a few years back when the illegally killed “Dryden buck was confiscated by the Ministry of Natural Resources. Two pictures of that immense deer were bouncing around the Net within hours of it being confiscated. The ultra quick reaction to the poaching of that deer from media across North America took the MNR by complete surprise. That was a decade ago. It’s actually scary how fast things get around today. Every fall I receive or see several dozen different pictures of bucks, bulls and boars taken by hunters across North America. In some cases, the animal has just been killed. If a record deer, moose or bear is shot, the whole hunting community has seen pictures of it within a day, and likely in a lot less time than that. If a friend puts a bull or buck down, and there is wi-fi, the pictures are on my phone in seconds. If the pictures are taken on a camera, they are download and distributed before the truck is emptied. This is business as usual now. Pictures of fish and game are also being posted on Facebook, or on message boards, often with detailed stories attached. I have cringed at just how much ultra detailed info some people are willing to share with the world. This information is wide open to everyone who has an Internet connection. Little wonder that some folks are planting stories on these boards. False information that sounds credible will actually push people in the other direction. Then there are all the “giant sized game pictures sent around by text, social media email. I’d wager just about everyone who has an email address or Facebook account knows what I’m talking about. Sturgeon, pike, wild boar, deer, moose and bear make up the core of these pictures. Some of the shots are clearly fake, but most look legit. The weird thing about these “viral“ emails (they spread like a virus) is how often the story that goes with them is changed along the way. Suddenly you have giant 300 pound white sturgeon (native to the west coast) caught in the Kaministiquia River, or an Alaskan moose eating out of a persons kitchen window in Thunder Bay. Getting to the bottom of these Internet pictures and stories is both a challenge and a lot of fun. A decade or so ago I was sent a picture of a huge pike by email. The attached story said the pike was 55 pounds, and 56 inches long, and was caught in Rainy Lake. It didn’t look like the angler was on Rainy, so I did a quick Google search and discovered the original picture and story. Turns out the “Rainy Lake pike had been caught in Holland. Yet I have received that exact same giant pike email at least two dozen times since, the most recent being last summer.

Another time, someone forwarded me another picture and story. This one was of an albino fawn named snowball “from Thunder Bay! It sounded like a great story, but I could find no information on it. So I sent the picture out to a friend who is an MNR biologist. In short order a link came back to a website with some information about the deer. The website (www.snopes.com ) revealed little snowball was actually a fawn that had been found in Texas. The information the Snopes had about the deer was the same as what I’d been sent, the location had just been moved north a couple thousand kilometres. If you receive fish and game pictures of any kind that seem a little out of the ordinary, I’d highly recommend you check out snopes.com. What you will discover should make for great party conversation, if nothing else.

This massive pike, caught in Holland, is frequently mis-labelled as originating from Rainy Lake, or other locales when posted online.

From Farm to Fork Local Food Co-Op teams up with chef to develop a taste for local honey Submitted It was another night of making history in Dryden as the Cloverbelt Local Food Co-Op (CLFC) teamed up with Kano Reid and Cherrybell Hideout to bring the very first Farm to Fork event, Honey Love, to the area. The evening featured a five-course honey-inspired menu expertly prepared by Kano Reid’s Red Seal Chef, Kyle Barker with the help of his friends at Luciano’s, and Kano Reid owner David Durance transformed his quaint coffee and lunch stop into an elegant, intimate bistro just for the event. After selling out in one day to lucky CLFC members, the much anticipated event went off without a hitch, and another first for Dryden, event goers got the very first taste of Lake of the Woods Brewing Company’s brand new Honey Lager, brewed just for the event.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better night, or more support.” Commented event organizer Samantha Hawkins. “Paula from Cherrybell Hideout definitely helped us all garner a new appreciation for honey, the bees and what they do for us every day, and the food was to-die-for, definitely not something you get in Dryden every day.” Featuring dishes such as bee pollen encrusted rack of lamb, rabbit and wild rice salad in honey lager vinaigrette and spun honey accompanying dessert, the entire menu pulled its inspiration from our friends the bees and featured local ingredients wherever possible. “That’s what it’s all about,” says Hawkins, “bringing local producers to the table with interested consumers and giving them a chance to learn about what’s available locally, and how smaller scale farming, like we traditionally practice in the area, can have a positive impact on both our health and the environment.” If you missed the very first CLFC Farm to Fork event, you won’t want to miss the next. Visit www.cloverbeltlocalfoodcoop.com and follow CLFC on Facebook (Cloverbelt Local Food Co-Op) for more information and for your chance to love local.

When: February 25th, 2015 Time: 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Where: 288 Arthur Street – Community Living Dryden-Sioux Lookout (back door in the basement) Please RSVP by contacting Tuesday Laderoute at 223-3364 ext. 4333 or Kathy Parenteau at 223-8550. Refreshments will be served.

According to a Cost of Living analysis chartered by EliteSingles, a typical Valentine’s Day date of dinner for 2, a bottle of wine, cinema tickets, and a taxi ride home costs Canadian singles an average of $138. But some singles are set to fork out more than others; Ottawa is the most expensive place to take a date

out, followed by Vancouver, Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal, Quebec and Winnipeg. Average Valentine’s Day cost by city: Ottawa: $155 Vancouver: $147 Toronto: $146 Edmonton: $143 Calgary: $134.5 Montreal: $133

Quebec City: $128 Winnipeg: $122 The costs don’t stop there – Canadians spend on average $37 on their lover’s Valentine’s Day gifts. All in all, it’s no wonder that many singles think Valentine’s Day is more financial stress than it’s worth.

Megan Pollard, a Dryden resident who just recently quit smoking and joined the Challenge says her quit smoking experience has a lot to do with the with being a good role model for her daughter and recognizing the damage smoking has done to the health of her extended family. “My husband has been the most supportive person for me,” said Pollard. “My grandmother passed away last year from COPD. ‘Dogs unleashed By Dryden Observer Staff

the eventual game-winner 8:39 into the third as he finished off the feed of Eric Masters. Masters added some insurance with four and half minutes to go as he chipped in a loose puck in front of a croweded Fort Frances crease to make it 31. Matt Houston then iced it in the final minute with an empty netter. The winning weekend also saw The GM Ice Dogs bump the Minnesota Iron Rangers out of third spot. They now sit just two wins out of second place - long occupied by the Thunder Bay North Stars. Perhaps lost amid the hub-bub surrounding league scoring leader Cole Golka’s 40th regular season goal last week is the depth of scoring power behind him — with fellow forwards Jonathan Philley and Matt Houston tied for third in the league points race. GM Ice Dogs Goaltender Tate Sproxton’s recent efforts, including a 42-save performance on home-ice versus the Fort Frances Lakers earned him league Player of the Week honours.

It felt like a turning point week for the Dryden GM Ice Dogs as important wins against the SIJHL’s top-two teams sent a clear message: The Dryden GM Ice Dogs are really starting to click. Fans were on the edge of their seats last week as home ice action versus the Fort Frances Lakers, Saturday, took on a pace and pitch as yet unseen this season. Ending in a 4-1 win, local fans watched the Ice Dogs drown the Lakers for the first time since Oct. 25. The once injury-plagued ‘Dogs are three wins and seven losses for the season against the league leading Lakers and will face them four more times in the remainder of the season, beginning Tuesday. Fort Frances carried the play in the opening 20 minutes outshooting Dryden 17-5 and picked up the game’s first goal 13 minutes into the contest as Wyatt Cota buried his 20th of the season past Sproxton. The GM Ice Dogs battled back in the middle stanza to level the proceedings as Blake Peavey tied it at 15:25 of the second. Nick Eytcheson notched

Strong start sends Dryden past Thunder Bay The Dryden GM Ice Dogs scored the game’s first three goals and never trailed as they defeated the Thunder Bay North Stars 7-4 Friday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up at the Fort William Gardens. It was all GM Ice Dogs in the opening stanza getting a trio of tallies, including two on the power play, to take control early. Golka fired home his 40th marker of the season during a two-man advantage. Golka’s effort also allowed him to become the third Dryden player alltime and 18th in league history to reach the 40goal plateau in a season. Tate Sproxton made 34 stops to pick up the win for Dryden while Dupuis faced 42 shots in defeat for Thunder Bay.

Podium finishes for skiing Eagles at local NorWOSSA event By Dryden Observer Staff Old Man Winter finally relaxed his icy grip on the thermostat last week enough to run the NorWOSSA Nordic Ski Championship at Dryden Ski Club, Feb. 5. The event saw two prior cancellations, Monday and Wednesday due to temperatures below -20 degrees Celsius. It wasn’t just the racers’ comfort at stake in the cold — at 20 below zero, skate skis achieve very poor glide, so Thursday’s race time temperature of -12 was a marked improvement. On the local front, DHS Eagle Luke Smith placed second in the Senior Boys 7.5 km race. Andie Wood grabbed silver in the Seniors Girls 5.5 km race with teammate Britney Mol placing third. Corrin Kuzemchuk took third in the Junior Girls 3.5 km race, while her Junior Boys counterparts Devan Schmidt and Michael Braun placed second and third in their race respectively. Dryden hosts Sunset Country Region skate testing Submitted by Janice Radburn The Dryden Skating Club hosted the Sunset Country Region High Test session this past weekend, Feb. 6-8. Figure skaters from Kenora, Eagle Lake, Dryden, Keewatin, Border and Balmertown Clubs arrived throughout the weekend to test their skating skills. All the skaters participate in the Skate Canada figure skating program known as StarSkate and test through

a nationally standardized testing system. High test weekends are held four times a year throughout Sunset Country to offer senior figure skaters the opportunity to test areas of skating that range from Junior Silver to Gold. A professional dance partner is required and former Drydenite and professional figure skating coach and dance partner, James Callan, was brought in from Barrie to partner the skaters in their dances. An

Evaluator who is qualified to test at the gold level must also be brought in. This weekend the Evaluator was a young former skater who flew in from Sudbury. Joclyn Armit, from the Dryden Skating Club, tested three gold dances. Joclyn is already a gold level skater having achieved her Gold Skills and Gold Interpretive. At the end of the figure skater season, Joclyn will join the elite group of skaters whose photo hangs in the arena

lobby. Several skaters from the Eagle Lake Skating Club also tested their dances and skills, including Abigail Tourond who tested two gold dances and sister, Monica, who tested Senior Silver dances. Hailey Lappage, and Emily Wightman also tried Junior Silver dances. All the figure skaters

appreciate the opportunity to dance with professional dance partner, James Callan. At their home club, skaters learn the dance pattern, timing, style and expression of the specific dance but must also learn the “unison” of the dance once James arrives for practice. Not only must skaters learn to dance with

a partner, but they also practice some of the more difficult hand holds and changes throughout a dance. From a tango to waltz to a foxtrot, figure skaters master them all! The weekend proved very successful for all figure skaters with an outstanding 85 per cent pass rate of the 56 tests tried.

The Little Bean That Transformed the World Dryden and District Museum probes the history of coffee in new exhibit By Chris Marchand

Count the Hearts CONTEST Just find and count up the number of hearts spread throughout THIS ISSUE. The hearts to be counted look like this: (do not include this one.)

It’s more than a little curious how a little bean grown halfway across the world in an equatorial climate has become a ubiquitous part of Canadian life. Canadians are ranked ninth among the world’s coffee drinkers, consuming an average of 6.5 kilograms of the roasted, ground beans per year (several times more than the global average of 1.3 kg). A new exhibit at Dryden and District Museum uses local and regional artifacts to take a closer look at the caffeinated beverage’s cultural role, domestic use and even the dark side of its production in the third world. The opening reception of the exhibit was held, Feb. 6 and featured a café setting with live entertainment from Allan Mazurski where a wide variety of coffees and desserts made with coffee were provided by Kano Reid. Dryden and District Museum curator Leah Gardner says sometimes the most prevalent parts of our lives are the ones we think about the least. “I have to have my beautiful cup of coffee every morning,” she said. “One morning I was just sitting and thinking about coffee — why do we love it and need it so much?” Gardner says the exhibit is about a year in the making between research, gathering

A display item from the exhibit showing how coffee beans are roasted. artifacts and even fabricating some of the display pieces herself. From the English coffeehouses of the Age of Enlightenment to the slave trade, Gardner says the subject becomes a historical ‘rabbit hole’ of sorts that’s difficult to do justice in an exhibit. “There’s a lot to this,” she said. “There’s the science behind the roasting of the beans, the history of slavery. It’s like anything that we have a high demand for. There’s usually someone at the other end that’s not being treated that well in the course of bringing those products to us.” Gardner says she hopes museum visitors will come away with a desire to be more careful and conscientious consumers of coffee products. “I hope people will take a closer look at a beverage we all seem to love,” she said. “If tomorrow we woke up and there was no coffee in the world it would be pandemonium.” The History of Coffee: The Little Bean That Transformed the World, will remain on display until, April 18

Mild, wet day for 54th Dryden Christmas Bird Count Submitted by CBC compiler Darlene Salter

The 54th Dryden Christmas Bird Count was held on December 14, 2014. In spite of an early morning fog and periodic drizzle throughout the day, over 30 bird species were reported by 16 field observers covering 9 routes by car or on foot and 33 feeder watchers counting birds around their homes. The temperature was quite pleasant for this winter’s count, hovering around 0 Celsius compared to the previous Dryden Christmas Bird Count (CBC), which took place on a bitterly cold day of – 20 to -26 Celsius temperatures plus wind chill. Only 23 bird species were observed on that day as a result of the polar vortex pushing most migratory birds further south. Only the hardiest resident birds weathered the coldest winter in a century. No Redpolls or Pine Siskins were seen until spring and Pine Grosbeak numbers were very low. In fact, last winter was the only winter out of 20 living

Their cheerful songs in addition to the chatter of the large flocks of Common Redpolls and Pine Siskins are welcome winter sounds. Many Common Redpolls and Pine Siskins remained in Northwestern Ontario during the Christmas sea-

son and are still showing up in large numbers at well stocked feeders. Also some migratory birds that normally winter south of the border, lingered long enough to be included in the Dryden CBC. On the count day, 31 species and 2662 individual birds were counted: Mallard, 1; Bald Eagle, 31; Ruffed Grouse, 25; Sharptailed Grouse, 1; Wild Turkey, 6; Rock Dove, 65; Great Gray Owl, 1; Downy Woodpecker, 26; Hairy Woodpecker, 40; Pileated Woodpecker, 7; Gray Jay, 66; Blue Jay, 124; Blackbilled Magpie, 28; American Crow, 12; Common Raven, 401; Black-capped Chickadee, 372; Redbreasted Nuthatch, 92; White-breasted Nuthatch, 1; Brown Creeper, 1; European Starling, 77; Bohemian Waxwing, 70; Whitethroated Sparrow, 1; Darkeyed Junco, 13; Red-winged Blackbird, 2; Common Grackle, 3; Pine Grosbeak, 293; Purple Finch, 3; Common Redpoll, 361; Pine Siskin, 129; Evening Grosbeak, 390; House Sparrow, 20. Highlights of the 54th Dryden CBC were a Great Gray Owl heard by Lisa Harvey on Pollard Road, a Brown Creeper on Bill and Penny Higgin’s suet feeder, a White-breasted Nuthatch at Thelma Smith’s, a White-throated Sparrow at Bryan McDonald’s, 2 Redwinged Blackbirds at Owen and Angie Vaughan’s, 70 Bohemian Waxwings devouring Manitoba Maple seeds and ornamental tree fruits in a back alley near the arena, and a lone Mallard resting on an ice shelf below the Duke Street dam. Six Mallards were seen in the same area earlier in December but a hungry Bald Eagle was also eyeing them. The 2014 Dryden Christmas Bird Count results were entered into the Audubon Christmas Bird Count data base, which contains 115 years of data beginning with 27 counts in North America on Christmas Day in 1900. Laura Howe, a renowned Dryden naturalist, began the Dryden CBC in 1960. Laura organized and compiled the Dryden CBC until 1994. In the previous 114th Audubon Christmas Bird Count, Dryden was one of 2201 count circles in North America. Each count circle has a diameter of 24 km. Since the results for the 115th Audubon CBC are still being entered, the total number of Christmas Bird count circles for the 201415 year is unavailable at this time. Present CBC results and historical CBC results can be viewed on the Audubon website: www.audubon.org/cbc. The next big birding event will take place this month, February 13 - February 16. The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are. As the count progresses, anyone with internet access can explore what is being reported. To register for the event go to www.birdsource.org/gbbc.

Obituaries Agnes (Aggie) Christine Daignault – 1934 - 2015

In loving memory of Agnes (Aggie) Christine Daignault, who passed away peacefully at her home in Wabigoon, Ontario on Saturday January 31, 2015. Aggie was born on

February 10, 1934 to Joseph and Muriel Rousseau in Fort Frances Ontario. In 1952 she married Jim Daignault and 7 years later they decided to expand their family when they fell in love with and adopted the first 2 of their 5 children, Patrick and Michael from Timmins, Ontario. When they were bringing their boys home they were surprised to find out they were expecting and went on to add Tracy, Timothy and Peggy to complete their family. In 1964 they moved to Dryden, Ontario where Aggie began working for the Dryden Paper Co.,

until she left when she and Jim bought Cedar Motel in Wabigoon and went into the trucking business. After Jim passed away, Aggie and Tim started D&D Contracting. She continued to operate Cedar Motel while also doing the book keeping for D&D until her passing. Aggie was blessed with a caring family and close group of friends. There was never a day that went by without someone stopping by for coffee and a visit. Her door was always open to anyone who needed advice or just someone to talk to. She loved visiting with her grandchildren and telling them stories

about family and growing up in Fort Frances. If you put in a request before your visit, she would even have a piece of her amazing carrot cake waiting for you. Aggie enjoyed picking blueberries, playing bingo and religiously watching the news and stock market. She kept everyone informed on what was going on in the world and how the price of gold was doing. In the last few years she spent a lot of time fishing with her family and enjoying summer barbeques and fish fry’s with all of her children and grandchildren. She was thrilled

to see much of her extended family at a large family reunion this past August at Aaron Park. Aggie is survived by her children Pat (Karen) Daignault, Mike, Tracy (Klaus) Rottler, Tim Daignault (Angela Brannan), Peggy (Heinz) Lang, Jess Roy, who she thought of as a son, 11 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, her sister Mary Johnson of Fort Frances, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was pre-deceased by her parents Joseph and Muriel Rousseau, husband Jim Daignault, brothers Jim and Bud (Oliver)

Rousseau, and good friend Erwin Bartz. There was no Visitation as cremation had taken place. A Memorial Service was held at Dryden Community Funeral Home on Saturday February 7 at 11:00 a.m. followed by a luncheon at Wabigoon Memorial Hall. Interment of ashes will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wabigoon Local Services Board for the Memorial Hall or a charity of your choice through the Dryden Community Funeral Home 249 Grand Trunk Avenue Dryden, ON P8N 2X3.
