Province commits $1 billion for Ring of Fire access road Murray pitches new

By Chris Marchand

Things are moving in the province’s Ring Of Fire development file, says Ontario’s Northern Development and Mines Minister. Just where and how they will move will be the object of intense study over the near term, says NDM Minister Michael Gravelle who announced a $1 billion provincial commitment, Monday, to develop strategic all-season industrial and community infrastructure to access the proposed mining area in Ontario’s Far North — often touted as Ontario’s Oil Sands. Gravelle confirms that a Ring Of Fire development corporation will now focus its efforts on a key decision on a transportation route to the chromite deposit. Two potential routes have been proposed: one pushing straight north from the CPR rail line to the mining area from Nakina and another favoured by mining company Noront which would use Hwy. 599 via Pickle Lake, known as the East-West route. Consultant firm Deloitte has been commissioned to study the merits of each route and make a recommendation to the development corporation on a decision that could have enormous impacts on the communities through which a transportation corridor would pass. “What is the best route that can achieve our goals in providing access to the Ring Of Fire?” said Gravelle. “What is the best route that can also provide access to the

First Nation communities? You need to get the minerals to market, but you also need to recognize that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to provide access to communities that currently rely on diesel electricity generation. Can we get them off that? I think we can.” That’s where Gravelle says the federal government should join the project to seize the opportunities to improve infrastructure and access in First Nations along the Ring Of Fire Route. “This is a complex and challenging project,” said Gravelle. “It’s also an expensive one. We’re keen to make it clear that the federal government needs to join us, they need to match those dollars in order for us to continue that momentum I think we’ve established with the signing of the framework agreement and now this commitment from the province to invest so substantially in the project.” The funding commitment arrives hot on the heels of a freshly signed Framework Agreement between the province and the Mattawa First Nations which Gravelle says was a key component. “We recognize that for a project such as this in a remote part of the province where there has never been any development before, it’s very important to get this right,” he said. “There’s no question that the First Nations who will be most closely impacted by the Ring Of Fire need to be assured that there will be benefits for their communities if indeed the project moves forward.”

road maintenance model to NOMA By Chris Marchand After a winter that pushed his ministry’s model of outsourced highway maintenance beyond the breaking point, Transportation Minister Glen Murray skillfully managed his time in the hot seat talking to regional municipal leaders at the annual meeting of the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association (NOMA), April 25 in Fort Frances. With a budget set to drop — upon which an election could be called — NOMA’s ministerial ‘bear pit’ wasn’t entirely free of campaiging. Murray didn’t waste time defending winter road maintenance in the north this past winter, instead he advanced the conversation toward how he thinks his ministry could fix what is widely regarded to be a bad situation. “I was very unhappy with the winter maintenance on our highways in Northwestern Ontario,” said Murray. Murray described the option of area-managed contracts as ‘the worst of both worlds’. “There’s too much oversight for the contractors and too much cost for us,” said Murray. “The other option was to bring it back into MTO — but a previous government laid off 3,000 MTO staff. Not only do we have no staff, we have no public works yards, we don’t have trucks or a single sparkplug left, so it would be very hard to foot the cost

“You already have crews who do this and we believe you could get a lot more work done and a lot more value for tax dollars this way...” -Glen Murray, Ontario Minister of Transport to rebuild it.” The downloading-weary municipal delegates listened warily to Murray’s pitch for a fully-funded service model that could be delivered by municipalities, somewhat similar to what is done in several Minnesota and Maine. “We will not do this unless you consent,” said Murray. “We have looked at the possibility of taking all of that money, and it is a lot, for those area maintenance contractors who are making the decision not to continue and exit their contracts, to actually transfer those funds directly to Continued on Pg. 3

Dryden attorney Sarah Trach has been appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice following many years of practicing Photo by Samantha Hawkins family and criminal law.

New role for Trach By Samantha Hawkins As of April 16, 2014 McAuley and Parnters managing partner, Sarah Trach was appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice by the Attorney General after an extensive application process, including interviews in front of a panel of judges and lay people. Justice Trach is currently in training, and will be shadowing other judges until the end of May when she will then assume her position on the bench in Kenora, with travel to Fort Frances, Atikokan and Ignace and at times, Northern reserves. Trach says she is familiar with the local resources, and lack of resources and associated struggles

and challenges facing the people in her area and is pleased she is able to see justice occur. “Its always nice when a local person is appointed to a position within the community they are familiar with so they are familiar with the struggles that the people who will eventually appear before them face.” Trach is the fifth lawyer from McAuley and Partners to be appointed to the bench and says the roles of lawyer and judge are very different. “When you’re a lawyer, you are advocating on behalf of one person. When you are appointed to the bench your interest is ensuring justice occurs. So its two entirely different roles.”

Lawyer fifth from local firm to be appointed provincial court judge Since her call to the Ontario Bar in 2003 Trach has appeared regularly in both the Superior and Ontario Court of Justice and is also a member of the Ontario Family Law Rules Committee and a panel member for the office of the Children’s Lawyer and Family Responsibility Office. Trach’s practice began balanced between family and criminal law, but switched focus to primarily family law when Justice Hoshizaki was appointed to the bench, and a void presented itself. Excited to be embarking on this latest venture Trach says the future looks interesting. “It is an exciting transition and I am definitely looking forward to what lays ahead for me.”

On the voters’ list? City urges residents to check status at voterlookup.ca By dryden observer Staff Municipal elections are coming up this fall and the City of Dryden wants to make sure we’re all prepared by introducing Voterlookup.ca a secure, online service replacing the traditional Municipal Enumeration Form mailin system. Designed to be more efficient than the traditional mail-in system, the site, owned and managed by MPAC, is responsible for identifying all potential municipal, school board and District Social Servies Administration Board electors and is used to build a preliminary list of electors and

create final voters list. Dryden Acting Clerk Debra Kincaid said in an April 14 staement from the the City of Dryden, “An accurate, up-to-date list of electors helps the City of Dryden administer smooth elections, and it also ensures that your Vote by Mail package is delivered right to you to vote this fall.” It takes only a few minutes for voters, with only their basic information – name, address, city/town/village name and date of birth – or their assessment roll number, to confirm their eligibility. tive at 1-866-296-6722. Information is shared only with municipalities for the purpose of creating the final voters list and was designed in partnership with Ontario’s Privacy Commissioner and is protected under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

“At the end of the day, voterlookup.ca is about improving electoral information delivery to municipalities. This means more efficient and cost effective election for taxpayers and that means a better service for all electors.” Said Kincaid in the same April 14 release.

municipalities who could extend and provide the highway coverage.” Murray says that municipalities have some key infrastructure elements already in place that would make them the obvious choice to participate in a shared services model. “Many of you have public works yards, you have mechanics and facilities to do that,” he said. “You already have crews who do this and we believe that you could get a lot more work done and a lot more value for tax dollars this way.” Murray says such an approach could allow neighbouring municipalities to share crews and move resources around to where they are needed most in the region. “It’s not downloading,” he said. “This is fully-funded. We do 12 year agreements — a mutually negotiated contract. We’re not asking you to pay for it,

we’re simply asking you to manage and operate it.” As for other regional transportation issues, Murray hinted that the province may be close to resolving the concerns of Shoal Lake 40 First Nation which have long stalled plans to twin the first 30 kilometres between the Manitoba border and Kenora. Murray adds his government has earmarked more funds for transportation infrastructure than their predecessors, of $1314 billion, or two percent of Ontario’s gross domestic product (GDP). “From 1970 to 2005, successive governments massively disinvested in infrastructure as our population was exploding,” said Murray. “We’re now paying the price for over 30 years of neglect and we’re trying to catch up as we come under the worst global recession in our lifetime. Eighty per cent of what was built out there in our municipalities is getting old — you and I know it. ”

Birds of a Feather y friend the birdman M Jerry Wilson occasionally strays into social commentary, so I feel justified in straying into his territory once in a while. This is to describe some of the birds I have seen around town this past year or so. Black-crested Dipperbird — These appear in great abundance in spring, generally around bars and recreation facilities. Their cry sounds like ‘entitlement, entitlement, rights, rights, rights’. As summer comes on, they tend to disappear into parents basements, and the black crests disappear, making them indistinguishable from teenagers generally. Ruby-breasted Fluffytail — Very brightly coloured plumage, flits around a lot while swishing its fluffy tail back and forth, usually found in singles bars and similar habitat, cry sounds like a high-

pitched giggle, finds wellheeled male patrons very attractive, uttering its gigglecry at any remotely humorous remark he makes. Knowitall Gull — Very loud, aggressive bird generally in-your-face, uttering his rasping abrasive call ‘knowitall, knowitall’; is known to use his, ahem, manure as a weapon, diving and dropping bombs aimed at the back of his opponents neck. Has a peculiar structure in his wings which causes him to fly in big, leftward circles. Dowdyfeather Swallow —- Usual habitat is government offices. Very dull plumage. Call is a faint ‘peep’. Seems to understand the Knowitall gull’s call, and accepts it unquestioningly as absolute truth. Hairychested Sandscratcher — Found hanging around beaches, generally pos-

ing with muscles flexed and a stare fixed at the horizon, except eyes seem to follow any specimen of Ruby-breasted Fluffytail in the area. Cry is raucous, sounds like ‘cervesa por favor’. Huffnpuff Bird - Puffedup plumage, flies with ears close to the ground. Generally found hanging around city hall, especially on Mondays, where a flock circles with their heads down, muttering ‘huffnpuff, huffnpuff ’. Unusual ritual behaviour, individual specimens take turns stretching neck upwards like a bantam

rooster about to crow, but cry sounds like ‘financial-genius, financial-genius’ rather than ‘cock-a-doodle-doo’. Pundit Bird — casual plumage, can be found hanging around radio stations and cable companies, offering explanations as to why his forecasts are wrong, call sounds like “raintodaysunnyfriday” A cousin found in bigger cities can be heard going “bull, bull, bear bear bear” Pining Buzzard – sad, wrinkled face with a sharp beak, big, floppy slow-moving wings, always looking back over his right shoulder as though pining for the past, cry sounds like ‘don’t-change-athing, don’t-change-a-thing’ Naezlflat Warbler — Bright, cheerful plumage, bobs about in a rhythmic motion, usually found hanging around karaoke bars and churches, at his most raucous in a shower.

Woodchopper Bird – Plumage distinguished by a bright, shiny orange head with strange appendages on each side, baggy orange body and huge hands and feet, usually found in mature forest muttering his cry ‘%&@# fell the wrong way again”. Heavy-butt Bully Bird — Plumage looks like flip-flops and shorts, cry sounds like “that’s a big 10-4, good buddy”, generally found in herds of monstrous big vehicles, often right on your tail. Wrinkle-neck Grey Crow – Dull, ill-fitting mismatched plumage, only flies once a year, gait is like a crippled turtle, usually found hanging around the Seniors center and funerals, cry sounds like “I’m-rightyour-wrong, I’m-right-yourwrong”. Occasionally writes columns. No charge for all this insight into Mother Nature.

Trumpeter Swans — back from the brink of extinction n Easter O Sunday two large white cones were sticking out of a patch of open water on the creek down the hill from Parson Road. I had my camera,

so I stopped and waited for the swans to right themselves so I could get some pictures. It seemed like a few minutes until they came up, then they climbed up on the snow

beside the Canada Geese. Trumpeter Swans are the heaviest bird in North America and when they are beside a Giant Canada you can see how massive they are. They are heavier than White Pelicans and California Condors. Healthy adult Trumpeters have few natural predators. Trumpeter Swans are quite a bit larger than the Tundra Swans that pass through here in the spring and fall. Trumpeter Swans have a forehead that narrows to a vee between their eyes while Tundra Swans have a U shaped forehead and may have a yellow patch on the top of their bill. Both species have black bills and legs. Tundra Swans are legal game in some jurisdictions and some Trumpeters are shot by mistake every year.

Trumpeter Swans are a remarkable conservation success story, there are believed to be at least 24,000 of them now and they are listed as “ Least Concern “ for conservation status. In 1933 there were believed to be 77 adult birds in Canada and 50 in the U.S. They were hunted relentlessly since Europeans came to North America as they have a 2 inch thick layer of down and their flight feathers made the best quill pens. Their skin was also used to make a light strong leather. Trumpeter Swans can live to 24 years in the

wild and most pairs mate for life at 3 or 4 years of age. They can lay up to nine eggs and have a very good survival rate for their young. The Trumpeter Swan Society believes that their population has been increasing by 10 per cent per year for decades. The Ontario Trumpeter restoration project began by introducing them to Wye marsh in 1988 but they may have been breeding in this area before then, I saw a pair in the middle of July here about 25 years ago. There are estimated to be 1000 Trumpeters in Ontario but I don’t know if they know about the ones that live here. Cornell U. and the other sources on the I-net say that Trumpeter Swans are very territorial and sensitive to people encroaching on

their nesting areas. If you see them, it would be best to observe from a distance, I won’t tell you where to look for them. All the sources on the web point out that cobs (males) are more likely to never mate again if their pen (female) dies. Some Trumpeters are only serially monogamous and divorce and change partners like some people do. The original “pen knife” was used to carve a nib on the end of a swan or goose quill to write with. Sightings - male flickers home Tuesday 22, Solitary Sandpipers 23, Buffleheads (river) 23, Broadwing Hawk and Mourning Dove near Kenora 27, male phoebes home 27, loons and Eared Grebes in river 27, lots of sparrows around now. The river is not crammed with various species the way it was last year.

What’s the best fish to eat? hat’s the best fish to eat? W It’s an interesting question, and not one that is easy to answer. The question depends so much on personal taste, and your own personal history with said fish. For instance, I grew up eating pike. We fished for them a lot when I was a kid. But there was just one problem. A certain person in the Ellis household of my youth did not know how to take the Y bones out of pike fillets. So there were trips to the clinic to have bones removed from throats and memories of swallowing big dough balls. That did not create a lot of warm, fuzzy memories of eating pike. In fact, it took me decades to actually get around to eating pike again, but once I did (with Y bones removed) it was soon clear just what a quality flesh the fish had. Pike meat was white, firm and flaky — especially when the pike being eaten came from cold water or was caught in the winter. Yet to this day, I’m far more likely to release a pike than keep it for dinner. This despite knowing the quality of the meat. It all goes back to those darn Y bones in my throat. On the flip side, I have a serious soft spot for eating brookies.

Especially the little creek sized guys of about 10 to 12 inches. There are a lot of fond childhood memories of frying specs, head and all (no guts though) in flour, pepper and butter. The sound of the trout frying, the curl of the body as it cooked, the browning of the skin and fins, it was all just foreplay for what was - and still is - a culinary marvel. I’d eat just about everything but the head and rib cage and crunch those fried fins like potato chips. If there is a better breakfast than fried brook trout with toast and blueberry jelly, I’ve yet to find it. Yet I kill so few brook trout these days that eating one is like eating lobster. A treat, but a rare one. Ask your average person on a street in Northwestern Ontario what their favourite fish is and you are 95 per cent likely to hear “pickerel”. The old yellow pickerel, or walleye, as it is now more com-

monly known, is a great eating fish. It has white, firm flesh and is good done in any number of ways. On the down side, the walleye rapidly loses it’s culinary appeal once the fish is 18 inches and over. I’ve eaten my share of bigger walleye and they are just ok. Fillet a 15-inch walleye, roll it in your favourite bread crumb mix, drop it boiling oil and then you’ve got something. I’m convinced the reputation of walleye has been largely built on Canadian shore lunches that feature “crisper” sized walleye fillets rolled in flour and cooked in lard. When consumed along the side of a northwestern Ontario lake, with the sun shining down and your friends and family around, nothing tastes better. When I decide to fish only for the plate, there are two species that really get me excited for dinner. Both are panfish. One is crappie, the other perch. Although both these fish are relatively small in size, they are long on flavour. Both perch and crappie have sweet, white meat, and because a big one for either species is about 13 to 14 inches, all fish caught are very tasty. Size does not impact panfish flavour. However, I’d sure like to see what a 6 pound perch tasted

There’s nothing quite like deep fried walleye. G.Ellis photo like! Whether baked, poached or fried, perch and crappie are tough to beat. That’s just one man’s opinion, but when it comes to eating my own fish, that’s the one that matters.

Judy Snell from Oxdrift stands beside her “Birds and Blooms of Canada and USA” quilt. Machine embroidered and hand quilted, the entire quilt took her just over two years to complete.

Key tags are confidentially coded and free.

Quilt Show wraps up The bi-annual event hosted by the Sunset Country Quilters in Dryden has wrapped up for another year and in June they will start planning for the next one. Held at the Agriculture Centre on April 26th and 27th, the event saw 271 quilted entries, the most they have ever had, and nine vendors come together to celebrate quilting and the associated community.

Event organizer Marjorie Salavich says there were entries from Thunder Bay, Winnipeg Beach, Stonewall, Kenora, Red Lake, Sioux Lookout and of course Dryden. “It’s a big draw for the community, it does bring in a lot of revenue because the ladies from out of town use it like a retreat and spend the weekend. First time Quilt Show participant Judy Snell from Oxdrift was impressed with the turn out. “It has been

well attended and there is a lot of very nice work. To see all of the work that has gone into it is amazing. There are lots of nice quilts and a lot of talented people in the area.” In addition to browsing and shopping attendees were invited to have a cup of tea in Quilt Show’s tea room, and with all of the tea having been donated by local business Kano Reid, Salavich says the event really was a community effort.

We now give a charity receipt for income tax purposes for donations over $20.00.

Dryden District Chamber of Commerce 17th Annual Business Excellence Awards

‘And the award goes to...’ By Samantha Hawkins It was a jam-packed evening of frills, friends, food and fun as the 17th Annual Business Excellence Awards went off without a hitch. Held in Dryden at the Best Western on April 26th, the evening brought business owners, employees and supporters out for a night of dinner and celebration and event committee member Gwen Kurz says it was all possible thanks to the hard work and dedication of the 2014 committee members. “Events like this are only possible with the hard work of a small but dedicated committee, who believe what they are working on is worthwhile, provide value for chamber membership and are at least a little bit fun.” Kurz adds the night was a celebration in business excellence and a chance to congratulate one another on another year of success. “Whether you’re in the business of retail, finance, healthcare, tourism, food services, insurance, forestry or mining. Whether you are an only employee or employ 200 plus individuals, together you are the

back bone of this community and I believe that is worth celebrating.” Kurz also announced a new regional economic development program, framed to support and assist the existing business community, which will be rolling out in the next few weeks, over the next year. This regional business retention and expansion project has been in development for nearly a year and the chamber is very pleased to be working with the Municipality of Machin, City of Dryden and the Dryden Development Corporation, PACE, Northwest Training and Adjustment Board, Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, Patricia Region Tourist Council and Eagle Lake First Nation. Kurz says they are all very interested in hearing from the local business community about what is going on in the local business environment and what needs to change to support business and economic growth in the region, and in the upcoming months will be contacting businesses and asking them to participate in this unique opportunity, and have their collective voices heard.

Prescription: exercise By Samantha Hawkins It’s not too often Dryden is in the forefront of innovation, but thanks to the Northwestern Health Unit, Dryden launched the Canada wide campaign ‘Exercise Prescription in Primary Care’ by Exercise is Medicine Canada. The one-day event hosted at the Best Western on April 25, brought together health professionals from all over the region with the goal of increasing the number of health care professionals who are assessing, prescribing and counseling patients in physical activity; increasing the number of Canadians meeting the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines and the Canadian Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines; and encouraging the appropriate use of qualified exercise professionals in the prevention and treatment of chronic disease. Local doctor Adam Moir was in attendance and says that in medical school you get taught how to give someone a drug, and how to advise them on how to use it but they are given very little instruction on how to tell people how to

exercise. “This is going to give us a template as to how to pull that further. The data that they present about the benefits of exercise in unbelievable so if I can share that with my patients then hopefully I

cular Prevention and Rehabilitation Program and a Scientist at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute is a leading expert on the role of exercise in rehabilitation and was in Dryden to speak at the event. “People are aware that things they can control in their lives actually impact their health, we’re familiar with campaigns on smoking and eating, and physical activity has always been there in the back ground but it has not always taken the medical interaction as much as those other things. In one way it’s bad to medicalize things but on the other hand it actually elevates the importance of physical activity as much as anything else we can do in that interaction with the physician or healthcare professional.” Dr. Oh says the only side effect from regular physical activity is that you feel a whole lot better and in some areas we already have this idea that exercise, rehabilitation and getting active is part of the medical pathway. “If you have a knee operation as an athlete, the idea

“you can get quite a bit of activity by simply being active with your kids and modeling that activity...” -Dr. Jonathon Fowles can get them to be healthier. It (exercise) really is one of the only interventions that is relatively risk free.” Dr. Paul Oh, Medical Director of the Cardiovas-

Health professionals discuss the broad benefits of exercise at local forum

From left: Dr. Paul Oh, Dr. Jonathon Fowles and Dr. Kit Young-Hoon at a recent health care forum examining the benefits of exercise at the the Best Western, April 25. Photo by Samantha Hawkins is you are going to go through the rehab program so you can get strong and get back on the field. If you take that idea and expand it to people living with all kinds of conditions, heart disease, or diabetes and cancer, and use that same sort of paradigm so that part of the recovery is actually helping with the physical rehab aspect of that and working with professionals, that really should be the standard of care that everyone can expect.” An interesting fact was presented and that is you don’t actually have to lose weight to improve your physical health. Simply by being more active you can help to not only overcome existing illnesses but also actually prevent sickness and disease and all it takes is 10,000 steps per day or 150 minutes per week. For Dr. Jonathon Fowles Director, Centre of Lifestyle Studies, Acadia University, and one of the guest speakers at the April 25th event, it can start as small as setting an alarm every 20 minutes and getting up from your desk to stretch your legs, get a drink of water, and get that blood circulating. Starting small also means starting young.

With children now averaging 40-42 hours of screen time outside of school hours it is no wonder that Dr. Fowles claims that children don’t have ADHD, they have nature deficit disorder. A big predictor of child hood activity is parental activity, says Dr. Fowles, from the family unit to the entire community and that if all you do is put kids outside they will be 30 – 40 percent more active than kids who are allowed to stay inside. “You can get quite a bit of activity by simply being active with your kids and modeling that activity for your kids, and we can all help each other by supporting those things. If everyone had the expecta-

tion to walk around the soccer field instead of sitting with our coffees watching, then that’s what we would do. It only takes a few to break that paradigm.” Social connectedness is very important to success according Dr. Fowles and in Dryden and smaller communities it is more prevalent which can allow those paradigm shifts to happen a lot faster. Dr. Moir knows we have real barriers in Northern Ontario and hopes this event will help spark some creative solutions and encourages everyone to make exercise a part of the conversation you have with your healthcare professional today.

Get garden ready Local greenhouse offers tips on an already unconventional growing season By Samantha Hawkins As the ground starts to once again appear from beneath the sea of snow, one can’t help but start planning for the growing season. Holly Schmidt from Schmidt’s Greenhouse says seeds and soils are the first things to prepare and when starting seeds, the sooner the better. “If you are starting seeds on your own, even early March isn’t too early as long as you’ve got the right space and conditions to carry them on without freezing them. If you’re growing in planters and you have a nice sunny south or west facing window, you can keep your planters indoors as long as you need to.” If it’s going to stay above 5 degrees its safe to leave the planters in your garage, but anything colder than that and you need to bring them inside warns Schmidt. “It’s just a big shock for them to go from being in the greenhouse to even 5 degrees as they are used to a warm environment.” Some plants require a

longer growing season, Schmidt laughs, “Peppers need a little bit longer and they need more heat. If you were to grow your own from seed, you definitely would have had to have started sooner than today.” Flowers also do better when started earlier as they too require a longer growing season to flourish, but Schmidt advises that you really can’t plant your flowerbeds too late. “We have different crops that come through, we have crops for early season and a crop for mid season and a crop for late season. We have customers come in even in late July and we still have nice plants for them to use to fancy up their cabin.” A lot of vegetables and other plants can be started right in the ground, and as soon as the ground starts thawing you can get in there and start tilling and amending the soil says Schmidt, who also offers ph testing kits to help you get started. Whether you are start-

ing your own plants from seed or purchasing seedlings to go right into the ground when it comes to actually putting them in the earth Schmidt says the rule of thumb is after the full moon in June. You don’t have to wait until then to get started however. Schmidt’s Greenhouse is now open for the season and Holly and the staff invite you to come out and get a breath of fresh air and a taste of spring. “You can see things growing, and coming to life and start getting inspired.”

Naked North celebrates five years By Samantha Hawkins Five years ago, a group of local artists embarked on a unique adventure and started their own gallery and gift shop, Naked North Gallery and Gift, a celebration of local art and culture. Run entirely by the artists and volunteers, Naked North has seen artists come and go throughout their five years, but a core group has remained and allowed the gallery to thrive and provide Dryden with a bit of culture and local gift ideas. Member artist Willene Moffatt is pleased with the progress. “We’re just carrying on, everything works. We’ve got this formula that’s absolutely wonderful. Everyone is friends and we all get a long so well. Looking back at the first year Moffatt recalls giving the acceptance speech at the Chamber of Commerce business awards. “I was looking around the room at all of the business people and laughed, we had no

business plan and no idea what we were doing. Knowing from the start however that location was key, the group set up shop on Highway 17 within the Tourist Information building, sharing the space with the Dryden District Chamber of Commerce. The location has allowed the artists the opportunity to ‘look after’ the tourists and share a bit of information regarding their own artistic process and member artist Marilyn Raposo says that even though she never takes a summer vacation, she wouldn’t change a thing. “I love it here, love working here. This is not a chore by any stretch of the imagination. Its so inspiring to be here and no one has ever had a negative remark coming through the door, it’s a very positive environment. As the gallery goes on offering a wide range of one of a kind products, the artists encourage everyone to come in and see the talent Dryden has to offer. If you are a local artist and

Eton Rugby Hall Club’s Backcountry Blast promises filthy good fun, June 1 By Chris Marchand Members of the EtonRugby Hall Club hope to put their own twist on the rising trend of the outrageously fun mud-filled obstacle course run. The Eton Rugby Backcountry Blast is hoping to loose at least 20 local teams onto its inaugural five kilometer obstacle course, Sunday, June 1. Joyce MacRae says she’s attended similar events, such as Kenora’s Run With The Sasquatch and Thunder Bay’s Dirty Girls as a spectator, she believes the idea’s time has come for the Dryden area. “It was inspiring,” said MacRae. “Everybody was having such a good time. It’s more of a party atmosphere. We’re encouraging team themes. Certainly, you’re going to get dirty.” The event, which gathers pledges from participants, will support the Dryden Regional Health Centre’s (DRHC) Room Renovation Fund. “We just felt that as a community hall we wanted to give back. A lot of our

“We want as many people as possible to enjoy it, not just the competitive minded...” -Joyce MacRae, Eton Rugby Hall Club members have been in hospital in Dryden and it seemed to be a way of touching a lot of people.” McRae says the Hall Club is eager to host an event in lieu of its regular Winterfest celebration — cancelled due to poor ice conditions of Rugby Creek and record snows that confounded attempts to plow a parking lot. She says the event

encourages spectators to join in the fun with free admission. For those taking part, MacRae says the focus of the event is on having a good time out in the country. “We want as many people as possible to enjoy it, not just the competitiveminded.” said McCrae. “It’s basically impossible to time in a fair manner. Every obstacle will have an ‘out’ — if someone doesn’t want to do that obstacle, they will certainly be able to go around it. It’s supposed to be a fun day, not a survivor thing.” The first team will be on course by 11 a.m. with the event to end at 4 p.m. MacRae says some of the obstacles could be described as ‘unique to country living’. Teams can register at etonrugbyhallclub.com and those who sign up before May 15 will become eligible for prerace draws. Eton Rugby Hall Club also has an active Facebook Page posting updates on the event.

Break a leg. The Dryden High School Drama club will take many months of rehearsal and hard work to the stage for a four-night run of Disney musical Beauty and the Beast this week. The show will run Wednesday, April 30 to Saturday, May 3. Doors open at 6:30 with the show to begin at 7 p.m. in Dryden High School’s Gordon Wood Auditorium. “There are always last-minute panics,” says excited director Ellen Bloomfield. “I’m sitting here holding the Beast’s nose and it’s broken, so we have to figure out how to fix

that and have it ready for him to wear through the week. There’s always those little problems that help to make the show exciting — a week or so later you get to laugh about them.” Leading lady Liz Bloomfield and leading man Matt Kereliuk are part of a cast of 20 DHS students, two St. Joseph’s students and one young actor from Open Roads. Bloomfield says the production represents a significant effort from set painters in the DHS visual arts classes, vocal coach Ryan Graham in the music program and the set building/choreography

and costume design of Roger and Kelly Griffiths among others. As for the question of whether the show may be suitable for small children, Bloomfield says parents should consider the show runs for approximately 75 minutes without an intermission into their decision to bring along small children. “People know their children,” said Bloomfield. “We say on the posters it may not be suitable for children under five. Are they able to sit still for that long? School-aged children will get quite a bit from it. It moves along quite quickly and the costumes are great.”

Energy East Pipeline Thank You Dryden from the Energy East Pipeline project team

Recently, TransCanada returned to Dryden to discuss our proposed Energy East Pipeline project with the community. Our team listened as community members shared their thoughts on topics that ranged from pipeline integrity and water protection to natural gas prices and emergency response planning. First, we’d like to say thank you for welcoming us back into your community. These events and the feedback we receive are a large part of our public engagement program and something TransCanada takes very seriously. If it’s important to you, then it’s important to us. We also want to ensure that everyone has the facts about these important topics. Here are a few key answers to the most common questions we heard from Dryden residents: • The age of the pipeline is not an indication of its integrity. Well-maintained pipelines can operate safely indefinitely, and TransCanada invests hundreds of millions of dollars every year to maintain and protect our pipeline systems. • The pipeline will be monitored 24 hours a day from our state-of-the-art control centre with the ability to shut it down in minutes anywhere along the route. Trained crews and specialized equipment will be strategically placed along the pipeline to respond quickly if needed. • TransCanada is committed to ensuring there is enough pipeline capacity to meet the current and future needs of natural gas consumers. The cost of supplying natural gas to Ontario and Quebec markets will not go up as a result of Energy East. I have been with TransCanada for 23 years and am very proud of our safety record and the people who work each day to uphold it. Thank you once again for hosting us and sharing your thoughts. We appreciate your hospitality and look forward to meeting with you again very soon. Please visit our website at EnergyEastPipeline. com for more information. Sincerely,

John Van Der Put Vice-President, Energy East Pipeline Project

When Dale started another contracting company he asked Moose to join him. Moose was a float driver, mechanic and equipment operator. He could do it all. He soon gained a reputation as a very versatile guy. Those who worked with him knew that he didn’t mind getting his hands dirty and that if Moose was on the job it would be done right. of the time he spent with them. Their greatest memory will be fishing at the secret lake 2 ½. After a day of fishing family and friends would be invited to Moose and Karen’s for a fish fry. Moose would fry up the fish using his “secret” recipe. Camping at the Eagle Lake Pow Wow was always a highlight of the summer for Moose and his family. It was a great opportunity for them to learn and share in their native culture. Sometimes the family outings might just be going for a ride around town and down to the lake. Most important to Moose was spending time together as a family. A Memorial Funeral Service to celebrate the life of Alfred “Moose” Leutschaft was held Monday, April 28 at 1:00 p.m. in the Dryden Agricultural Center with Reverend Hewitt Holmes and Elder Andrew Petiquan officiating. Darryl Joseph Pinette

Born in Dryden in 1967, Darryl attended school until grade 10 when he decided it was NOT for him. He found work with the carnival when it came to town, and even though it broke his mother’s heart he travelled with them for 3 years. In their off-season he got a job in a restaurant as a cook; he LOVED to cook but on his first day he had a bad fall when cleaning the grease traps and was sent to Toronto Hospital. He was paralyzed from the neck down and on a respirator for 7 months, before being transferred to LEIB (Lake Erie Institute of Rehabilitation), in Pennsylvania. They worked very hard with him and one year later he was walking & breathing without the respirator. He walked to the Michael

Bolton song ”When I Am Back On My Feet Again”. His determination to live on his own was so great that he lived independently in his own home until 2010 when he decided he wanted to come home to Dryden. He was doing well, going shopping and taking care of himself in his own little house. In March 2011, another incident occurred that sent him to Thunder Bay Hospital. He spent 7 months there, coming back to Dryden Hospital on December 23rd. He was in the hospital here until his passing. Darryl loved little kids, cooking, going with the guys when they went hunting and fishing, the Toronto Maple Leafs, playing games on the computer, and Christmas. He was not a man of great needs and that is why he chose to have a Charlie Brown Christmas tree. His life was a struggle, but he never complained. He tried to make lemonade out of his lemons. Darryl was a loving soul who always thought of others. He even made a trip to B.C. in 1991 to share in a celebration of his Mom & Dad’s, and Aunt & Uncle’s 25th Anniversaries, and once

again the song “When I’m Back On My Feet Again” came to mind, as he danced with his Mom. But his struggles are over now, and he is rejoicing in God’s garden and we know he is at peace and making others smile and probably being the trickster that he was here on earth. Maybe he can do something about the Maple Leafs winning, next year. Darryl is survived by his parents Jenny and Lou Pinette, brother Darren Pinette, sister Michelle Pinette (Lorne Taylor), nephew Cody Taylor, niece Chelsea Taylor as well as numerous other relatives. A Memorial Funeral Service to celebrate Darryl’s life was held Friday April 25th, 2014 at 11:00 in the Moffat Chapel of Stevens Funeral Home with Reverand Alan Campeau officiating. Interment of ashes will be held at a later date. If friends desire donations may be made to the Ontario Lung Association online or through the Stevens Funeral Homes P.O. Box 412, Dryden ON P8N 2Z1.
