Roofing, Cladding & Insulation A ‘Giant’ undertaking for STYROFOAM Work is well underway on the construction of a new visitors’ centre at the world-famous Giant’s Causeway, and 2,200m2 of 200mm thick STYROFOAM material ROOFMATE SL-A is playing a crucial role.The material, manufactured by Dow Building Solutions, has been installed on the flat roof not only to provide insulation but to support a wildflower meadow being planted as a vast, green roof. It was the first time 200mm thick ROOFMATE SL-A has been installed on a job site in Ireland.The enhanced ‘A-foam’ insulation, recently introduced to the Irish market, is blown with CO2, giving it a Global Warning Potential (GWP) of less than five. Safeboard provides protection Some 200m2 of Safeboard from Knauf Drywall, has been installed in the latest dental education facility at the Peninsula Dental School at the Tamar Science Park, Plymouth. The board brings X-ray protection and fire and acoustic performance together in one easy-to-install board thanks to its key ingredient – barium sulphate. Typical drywall constructions using Knauf Safeboard offer the same radiation protection as 1-2mm of lead sheeting – the requirement for more than 80% of X-ray equipment in the 70-125kV range. Safeboard is simple to fix, and cuts and snaps like an ordinary plasterboard, while Knauf Safeboard Jointing Compound is used to fill joints to complete the radiation shield. knaufdrywall@facta.co.uk 077
Severn Gorge puts Trust in NBT
Natural Building Technologies’ (NBT’s) Pavawall and Pavaroof systems have been used to help create an awardwinning, high performance structural building envelope for the new Severn Gorge Countryside Trust headquarters building at Telford in Shropshire. The NBT solution combines excellent thermal performance and breathability to deliver a warm and healthy internal environment for the building. As well as delivering U-values of 0.20 W/m2K and 0.15 W/ m2K for the walls and roof respectively, the NBT constructions contributed to an airtightness of 0.64 m3/hr/m2@50Pa, greatly outperforming the Building Regulations’ requirement of under 10m3. s.honey@natural-building.co.uk
