ACTING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

D

.A.R.E. to be different in 2020 At the beginning of a new year almost every person wonders what the new year will

bring… Maybe this is where we have it all wrong as wondering what the new year will bring implies that I am seeing myself as a “victim” of whatever the new year will bring. We should rather change our mindset and understand that what the new year brings to you will depend a great deal on what YOU bring to the new year! It has been found that people who succeed most are those who can constantly transform themselves. Transformation is not so much a process, as a deep seated desire to change ourselves and our environment. Instead of trying to change your entire life in the first few weeks of the new year, the simpler strategy is to adopt a 12-month plan where you are making constant improvements. We will be able to make things happen if we dare to be different in 2020! To utilise the 365 opportunities in 2020 we have to have the courage to dream, take action and ensure that we are results-focused with the aim to exceed our own expectations. Your ability to set goals and make plans for their accomplishment is the master skill of success. This ability, developes through practice, will do more to assure your eventual success than anything else you ever learn. The 10/90 rule says that, “The first 10 percent of time you spend planning and organizing will often account for 90 percent of the value of the entire process.” You should dare to dream, define what you stand for, never lose your zest and curiosity, always strive for excellence, build self-confidence, learn to work in teams, take care of yourself, preserve, have a broader social vision and finally never let success go to your head. We should understand that in life you will not be applauded for the good things you do but you will

Ehlanzeni TVET College

Mrs M Marais (Acting Principal)

continuously be criticized for failures and even little mistakes! This should not demotivate you but rather inspire you to persevere! To achieve your goals, you have to: 1. Dare to Dream and decide exactly what you want. Clarity is the starting point of great success. 2. Write down what you want, in detail, and set a deadline. Set sub-deadlines if necessary. 3. Determine the additional knowledge, skills, and abilities you will need to achieve your goal and how you will acquire them. 4. Determine the obstacles and difficulties you will have to overcome to reach your goal, and organize them in order of size and importance. 5. Identify the people, groups, and organisations whose help you will require, and decide what you will have to do for them to earn their assistance. 6. Make a detailed plan, broken down by activity and organized by priority and sequence. What is most important? What must be done first? What must be done before something else is done? 7. Lastly seize the day and take action on your plan immediately. Do something every day to move toward your goal. Get going and keep

...striving towards excellence going. Just do it! Make it your mission this year to dare to dream and to leave a legacy. To leave a legacy, do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path, leave a trail, start where you are, use what you have and do what you can! If we want to leave a legacy, make a difference and make use of all the opportunities in 2020, we have to dare to:

Dream Action your dream R esults focused E xceed expectations Let us be a winning team in 2020 and improve on our past successes by continuously working out of the box and dare to dream, action our dreams, be results-focused and exceed the expectations of the communities we serve. Life has a way of pushing our dreams down and they become buried under discouragement, past mistakes, low self-esteem and it becomes easy to settle for mediocrity even though we have all this potential buried on the inside! All of us have things that we believe we can do, something that we want to accomplish and deep down we know it’s a part of our destiny, we feel it so strongly but then we hit some setbacks; we did not get the promotion, the medical report was not good or a relationship did not work out. Do not let circumstances talk you out of what is deep down. You may not understand why things did not work out as you did the right thing, but the wrong thing happened. Go back and try again! The true mind of a champion is that even though some dirt gets thrown on your dream instead of letting it get buried, it keeps on shaking it off and moving forward towards new opportunities. Everything you are going to be, you are already, just in another form! You are the acorn of an oak tree… An acorn doesn’t look anything like an oak tree. It does not remotely look like it, would never have branches and leaves and be productive…

Ehlanzeni TVET College

www.ehlanzenicollege.co.za

It is just a nut, but everything that an oak tree is, is in the acorn even though it has not shaped out yet. So everything that the acorn will ever be is already in that nut and everything that you will ever be is already in you right now! We are looking for people who see the tree in the nut. A dream will always seem impossible until it is done. But by seeing, feeling, believing, planning and simply living out our dreams every day can ensure that we are moving forward in the creating the life we envision. When the pursuit of your dreams becomes difficult and you become frustrated with doubts and negative self-talk, remember adversity is an experience, not a final act. Falling down is a part of life, getting back up is living. And inside every obstacle, are hidden opportunities. Ehlanzeni College went through and is still going through difficult times but every one of us needs to start believing in ourselves and our College. We can change the direction of the College; we must just start believing in our dreams of making Ehlanzeni College the top college in South Africa. We have to ensure that we make the dreams of the young people we are working with come true. We have to give hope and inspire our students to become more daring and start believing that even if they come from poor families, that does not mean that they cannot dream and become the best. Students, you therefore have to make the best of all the opportunities during your studies and remember that opportunities are like sunrises; if you wait too long you miss them!

''A dream will always seem impossible until it is done.'' I pray that 2020 be the year in which you will start nurturing the dreams within you and D.A.R.E. to dream the impossible dream! Maryna Marais Acting Principal

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF ACADEMIC

T

he 2019 academic year has come and gone. It is imperative that we should reflect on its achievements and challenges.

The section has always advocated academic excellence among the students with the help from our lecturing staff, of course! The academic performance of the students in 2019 was not so impressive. The implication is that the teaching and learning plan was not implemented as planned for both academic staff and the students. I therefore, call upon all lecturers to ensure that 2020 is the year in which all students perform to the optimum starting with internal assessment tasks.

...we shall not have done justice if the college fails to participate in the World Skills Competitions in 2021 in China.

WELCOMING MESSAGE FROM THE CORPORATE SERVICES that led to almost on-the-dot actual enrolment against the projections. The slight over-enrolment is attributed to delayed return of continuing students but systems are in place to combat this experience in future. This year is starting with a full quota of energetic lecturers in both Ministerial Programmes (NC(V) and Report 191). Welcome to all our newly-appointed Mr EM Mbuyane (Deputy Principal: Corporate Services)

I

am excited on the privilege I have to pen down this welcoming message from the Corporate Services Section. The year twenty-nineteen has come and gone but Ehlanzeni TVET College still lives on with a full quota of its employees having survived the turbulence and ugly scenes thereof, courtesy to the Almighty. It is pleasing to note that despite some unfulfilled resolutions of the previous year our staff came back demonstrating vigour to confront twenty-twenty head-on. Twenty-nineteen ended in a good way for the College. This was so because the newly-appointed College Council led by the astute Ms Felleng Yende, crafted a new strategic direction contained in the 2020-2024 Strategic Plan of the College. The new strategic direction is pursuing a new vision, a new mission and new strategic goals all of which resonate perfectly with the strategic direction of the Department of Higher Education and Training.

staff and you are all wished a rewarding experience with the College. The College has all the reasons to demand an improved facelift with you now on board. The year twenty-nineteen was used to strengthen our capacity and systems for dealing with the DHET’s Capital Infrastructure Efficiency Grant (CIEG) programme that relates to the maintenance of the College’s infrastructure. Twenty-twenty will see a fullblown implementation of the programme. The Human Resource function continues to interest. Twenty-nineteen could well be described as a productive year in the filling of vacant posts, but the soon to be implemented Post Provisioning Norm (PPN) suggests otherwise. Implementing the new PPN provides a perfect platform also for the College’s Equity Plan. On behalf of the Corporate Services Section I would like to invite all of the College’s internal community to ‘Dare’ to give it our best shot in 2020 and therefore pledge for a concerted effort by all in making Ehlanzeni College even better.

In line with the new vision, the 2020 academic year started very well with efficient registration processes

Prospective students stand in line for 2020 registrations

2020 REGISTRATIONS AT EHLANZENI COLLEGE

E

hlanzeni TVET College is the College of first choice for many prospective students who want to attain industry-related skills. In September,2019, the College ran a campaign in partnership with Rise FM. The aim for this partnership was to promote and give support to the gospel of “Online application before Registration” The campaign included radio interviews, newspaper and radio adverts, school visits, exhibitions, roadshows as well as social media platforms. The College experienced an influx of potential students who were keen to register for the exciting courses offered by the College. The campaign in partnership with Rise FM ended in November 2019. The marketing team moved from one township to another to promote the college’s applications campaign for 2020.

Ehlanzeni TVET College

Most potential students showed interest in Business as opposed to Engineering-related Studies. All the applicants who met the requirements were called for a selection assessment and those who were successful were invited to come and register for the 2020 academic year. In strict adherence to the College Calendar, registration started on Monday, 06 until Friday 10 January 2020. During this week only returning students were being registered. New students were registered from Monday, 13 January 2020 until 16 January 2020. Students responded very well to the scheduled dates for registration. The registration process included checking of results for returning students, career pathing for new students and online registration. Campuses were registering

according to their 2020 enrolment projections and they were taking statistics on a daily basis to avoid under-enrolment and over-enrolment. Dedicated and hardworking teams worked tirelessly at all sites and ensured that the registration process went smoothly. Campuses managed to reach the targeted projections as expected.

Climb high, climb far. Your goal the sky, your aim the stars. Ehlanzeni TVET College would like to welcome our new students and appreciates them for choosing the college as their institution of first choice. Take a leaf from this inscription at William’s College: “Climb high; climb far. Your goal the sky; your aim the stars”. Never lose sight of your goal!

INDUCTION AND ORIENTATION CEREMONY PAR EXCELLENCE!

T

he 5th February, 2020 was a day the PreVocational Learning Programme (PLP), as well as level 2 students of the current year, would hate to forget. It was on this day that Mthimba Campus held this annual occasion to introduce the newly- admitted students to campus life as well as direct and adapt them to their new vocation. The occasion drew participants from both within

and beyond the boundaries of the campus. All members of the campus community, in all their different work categories, were in attendance. The event also drew the presence of special guests from PHOLA NSIKAZI Clinic, SAPS as well as representatives from HIGHER HEALTH. The Acting-Campus Manager, Mr M.C. Ngirishi, welcomed all to the occasion and declared the event officially opened. He expressed hope that everyone would feel a part of the Mthimba family and the students to use the day’s proceedings to their optimum benefit. The onus was placed on Mr P.M. Makhubedu to introduce members of staff, while Mr M.C. Thwala took to the podium to give a brief profile of the Ehlanzeni TVET College

campus; explaining how the campus was first conceived, its initial purpose and growth until the present. Mr Thwala further spoke on the purpose and function of the SRC and subsequently introduced the 2020 nominees. Mr L.D. Lentsoane, the Student Support Officer, painstakingly explained the various Student Support Services available to students to ensure success in their studies. These included, inter alia, student career coaching and counselling, students’ registration and welfare, as well as Bursary or Financial Aid issues. Career development and the introduction of peer educators was ably handled by Mr M. Chambale. The guests unveiled their various services which included; among others, Counselling, HIV/AIDS testing and counselling, Family Planning and a whole range of services suitable to the needs of students and young adults. In addition, these health practitioners came ready to provide their services right at the campus to anyone who needed such, student and non-student, alike. And many a soul was helped! As the programme drew to a close, our guests retreated to some designated classrooms where they began administering their art to those who needed consultation and the senior students ( i.e. levels 3&4), were released so as to be able to consult the practitioners. The remainder of the time was spent speaking to the newly-admitted. Mr M.C. Ngirishi took to the podium again to address issues of attendance, absenteeism, deregistration and pass requirements. Mrs N.S. Mndawe-Bvovongwe took them through Practicals and Protective clothing while Mr N.B. Mnisi spoke to the inductees about Time-tables, Tests and Examinations. Following a short but exciting talk on Campus Experience and Lifestyle by Ms G. Mashile, the inductees were led by Mr M.T. Mphahlele on a guided tour of the campus. The event was officially closed after a vote of thanks by Mr B.A. Mlombo who expressed hope that the inductees would heed every word and piece of advice given to them by the various speakers.

TURNING OBSTACLES INTO OPPORTUNITIES AT MASHISHING CAMPUS

T

he week of 2 – 6 March was a long and very hard one for students and everybody else at the College. This anxiety was caused by the disgruntlement of students emanating from unpaid NSFAS allowances. The disgruntled students protested by closing access to most of the College sites. Ben Sirach once said, “Without experience there can be little wisdom.” One of the College Campuses, Mapulaneng Campus, has proven these words to be so true!

support the continuity of teaching and learning, arguably the core of our business. The campus did not experience the disruption of classes as the affected students were encouraged to attend classes since a plan to assist them was in progress. On Friday, 06 March 2020 the Campus gave out the food parcels to the affected students. Mr. BC Kwayiyo, the Acting Campus Manager, said that the students appreciated the effort to keep them in class as they were now having food to eat at their respective places of residence. He also alluded to the fact that this wouldn’t have been possible if it was not for the co-operation of all stakeholders, in particular the business sector.

The Campus SRC together with Campus Management understood that the problem was external in its origins and therefore, neither the students nor the College Management could resolve it immediately. So, instead of closing access to the Campus, the internal stakeholders agreed to confront local businesses with a view to solicit support monetary or otherwise, to assist the NSFAS beneficiaries. As a consequent, this would enable and Ehlanzeni TVET College

HIGHER HEALTH ACTIVATION AT KANYAMAZANE CAMPUS

K

anyamazane Campus has set out a Health Activation Programme for the community within the premises of the Campus which was to promote good health and well-being of all its members. This event was held on the 20th February 2020. In keeping with occasions of this nature, several health organisations were invited to, among others, practise and promote their health activities so that both students and staff alike could take a leaf out their positive messages and live healthier lifestyles. The AIDS Foundation in partnership with the Institution of Health Programmes & Systems, was one such organization that came to present their health activities. Of the health organizations present, The Aids Foundation was the only one offering a variety of health programmes which included; testing for HIV & AIDS, Blood Pressure, Sugar diabetes, Pregnancy as well as, counselling for those who needed psychosocial support. Their major focus was the young women simply because they are mostly found vulnerable to social challenges (#say it #shano!). Another organisation, “Right to Care -Treating Health seriously”, an organisation under the health department, also attended the event. They provided testing for HIV & AIDS as well as offered Ehlanzeni TVET College

Hence, the mentoring of young-men to become responsible men and fight against Gender Based Violence, is of paramount importance; Young women are also mentored to grow-up and take charge of their lives. Students who received awards not only did well in their academic work but also lived up to the expectations when it came to their dress code. The normal “student looks made way for sophisticated outfits which all contributed to the glamour and excitement of the Award Ceremonies! The common message shared with students who did not meet the minimum requirement as per the awards criteria, was that through hard work, dedication and planning, it is possible to achieve what the award recipients achieved. Leading by example is a trait shown by some members of the College SRC who were among those who received awards. Mr Tshilidzhi Manenzhe, the College SRC Treasurer, motivated his fellow students to focus on their studies because their future is depending on what they achieve during their time at the College. Students were awarded in the following categories: Students who have passed all subjects in each level, students who obtained a distinction or distinctions and the overall best student in each level. The College congratulates all recipients of awards and hope that events of this nature will encourage students to work harder so that the number of students receiving awards for the class of 2019 will multiply in 2020!
