PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Members of the Club, you may recall from my last report that I gave you an update on the proposed amalgamation with Marrickville RSL Club. It is with great pleasure that I inform you of the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority decision to formally approve the amalgamation of the Clubs. While amalgamations must be financially viable to be a success, we believe they must deliver tangible benefits to clubs, their Members, staff and the community. Marrickville is owed a vibrant community focused Club. We believe that an RSL Club with an engaged membership base committed to RSL traditions and values has an important role to play within Marrickville’s socially, culturally and ethnically diverse population. I would like to acknowledge all the hard work and effort invested by the management of your Club which enabled us to achieve this vision and warmly welcome the Members of Marrickville RSL Club to our family. There’s no doubt that entertainment has been one of the great contributors to your Club’s reputation since we opened in 1947, and we can be extremely proud of the calibre of what we offered throughout 2015. Similarly, our facilities are geared towards, and service, a variety of age groups as well as tastes – with the goal of seeing Members’ enjoyment increase and guests return again and again. This year your Club delivered some truly exceptional events. I would like to thank staff for their continued positive contribution, creativity and dedication in delivering events that ranged from the extraordinary to much improved old favourites. I look forward to sharing our vision for the future of your Club in the coming editions of Chevron and hope that you are as excited as I am with where your Club is heading. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish everyone an enjoyable and healthy Christmas.

CEO’S REPORT

As the year draws to a close, you often hear the expression ‘wishing you and your family a happy and safe holiday’. For this report I wanted to touch on a theme that we are particularly passionate about: providing an inclusive, safe and welcoming environment for all our Members and guests. One of the greatest challenges with safety is that often it’s taken for granted and it is perceived as being someone else’s responsibility. Your Club implemented its own ‘See Something, Say Something’ safety initiative in late 2012, encouraging all staff to raise matters of concern as soon as they are identified, and to continually flag opportunities to improve the safety of staff, Members and guests. We are committed to responsible gambling: providing safe, socially responsible gaming environments where the potential for harm associated with it is minimised, and people can make informed decisions about participation. Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club is a founding member of BetSafe, the leading responsible gambling program in NSW that was formed in 1998, well ahead of related legislation being introduced three years later. And naturally, we comply with the service of alcohol requirements outlined in the Registered Clubs Act 1976 (NSW). In line with our vision, it’s the objective of your Club to minimise the incidence of anti-social and offensive behaviour relating to the abuse and misuse of alcohol. As such management introduced a thorough Responsible Service of Alcohol House Policy that adheres to the principle of harm minimisation as outlined in the Liquor Act 2007 (NSW). As part of our wider commitment a Customer Care Taskforce was formed in 2012 to offer further protection and support for patrons. This group meets on a regular basis to review and monitor your Club’s efforts in complying with these high levels of standard that we strive to achieve. Whether you’re enjoying a live show, keeping fit in our 24-hour gym, enjoying a meal or a drink at your Club, it’s important for us that you and your guests are confident that you’ll be able to enjoy your visit in a safe and welcoming environment. And on that note I’d like to sincerely wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday.

Members wishing to nominate a Member for Life Membership are requested to forward details to the CEO by Monday, 22 January 2016. In accordance with Section 23 of the Club’s Constitution, the nominee must have rendered outstanding service to the Club and must have not less than 15 years continuous membership of the Club. The nomination should include name of nominee, private address, badge number and period of membership, together with periods of voluntary work and any other relevant details that will support the nomination. The Board of Directors consider all nominations for Life Membership and may make recommendations for Members to consider at the Annual General Meeting.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING Melbourne Cup Carnivale The ‘Carnivale’ of all Carnivals on Melbourne Cup Day It was a carnivale that did not stop the nation but that had a full house fluffing their feathers, disguised in their masks and dancing at the side shows. The Brazilian Dance & Drum Group was explosive with their magnetic performance style, colourful costumes and distinctive energy. Nikki Bennett and her gorgeous dancers were the quintessential show girls that had audiences up on their feet with their refined cabaret style. 5 lucky members also walked away with $1,000 cash in the grandest race of all – the Carnivale Cup.

This year also saw the Melbourne Cup Calcutta added to the calendar where a prize pool of $7,197 was shared amongst the lucky winners! Thank you to all our Members and visitors for celebrating ‘Carnivale’ style at the 2015 Melbourne Cup event at your Club.

The original MasterChef winner, Julie Goodwin, prepared a delicious three-course menu that was replicated for a room of around 80 Members by the Club’s talented chefs at the Chef’s Table Dinner on Thursday 20 August in the Viva Room.

Spring Car-nivale Mercedes B200 won by Member Catherine Baradi September saw the launch of Carnival season at Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club. To kick off the celebrations, the ‘Spring Car-nivale’ Members’ promotion was launched where a Mercedes B200 worth over $55,000 and $120,000 worth of cash was given away. Catherine Baradi was one very excited winner as she drove away in her new Mercedes after the major draw that was held on Thursday 29 October.

OUR NEWS Local cricket club receives funding boost Participation in local cricket has been given a boost by a $7,500 grant to Marrickville Cricket Club, helping fund equipment purchases, specialist coaching and sun protection for players. CHPRSL is proud to have provided $7,500 worth of funding through ClubGRANTS, to Marrickville Cricket Club. The funding is helping to reduce the cost of registration for local families, pay for players’ sun hats and caps, specialist coaching and to help offset the costs associated with the 350+ balls used each season. Commenting on the grant, CEO Dean Thomas said: “Local sporting teams are vital to the fabric of our community in the Inner West. We’re pleased to deliver valuable resources to ensure the health of local sporting clubs and making a difference to the community at a grass-roots level.” Marrickville Cricket Club President Antony Sachs said: “We are grateful for CHPRSL’s generous sponsorship, which has been used to pay for white sun hats and blue caps. Players and their families appreciate CHPRSL’s sponsorship, as it reduces registration costs and allows the Club to get better cricket gear.” About Marrickville Cricket Club Marrickville Cricket Club is the biggest junior club in the inner west, with more than 250 local boys and girls playing this season, and over 150 playing under 8’s Milo In2Cricket. A record 24 teams are playing this season: 22 junior teams (under 9’s–under 16’s) and 2 senior teams, as well as over 150 players in under 8’s Milo cricket on Saturday mornings and 140 under 12’s playing T20 Blast on Friday nights. Games are held at grounds around the inner west, including Beaman Park, Lees Park and on the ovals along the Cooks River.

CHP IN THE PINK OVER $5,000 RAISED! Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club hosted a range of shows throughout October to show its support for Pink Ribbon Day. A massive $5,000 was raised through the Sydney Hotshots, Canterbury Country and Absolutely 80’s shows along with donation boxes that were placed throughout the Club. A big thank you to everybody who showed their support to help fight women’s cancer.
