President’s Report

CEO’s Report Every issue of Chevron reminds me how fast the seasons go by and how much we have achieved.

Farewell to the Winter chill and welcome to the Spring issue of Chevron! The recently held Club Member of the Year Award Night reflects the passion and commitment honoured by so many to ensure the continuing future of our Club’s community values. Congratulations to Gary Morrison for taking home this year’s award and thank you to countless others for your selfless contributions and dedication. Father’s Day is just around the corner and we have a sumptuous spit roast that Dad and the whole family will love, and don’t forget to catch all the upcoming footy grand final fever on our big screen. We have a great line of up entertainment including one of the most legendary bands of the 70s, Hot Chocolate in October, and ‘The Voice’ stars Simon Meli and Mitch Anderson are bringing the sounds of Rock & Roll to our Club in November. Tickets for the Member’s Christmas Cabaret in late November will be on sale from 21 September – book early to avoid disappointment. Join us for a great day of entertainment in our Club to celebrate Australia’s greatest horse race, ‘The Melbourne Cup’ on Tuesday, 5 November 2013. On behalf of the Board of Directors, it is with much sorrow that I convey our deepest sympathy at the passing of one of our most dedicated and longest serving Members and Directors, Archibald White. Archie was a valued member since 1956 and had a wonderful history with our Club, his contributions are immeasurable and he will be truly missed. I personally will miss his friendship and assistance, he has now joined his beloved Mary who I know he sadly missed since her passing. Once again I thank you for your patience and understanding during our refurbishments and look forward to seeing you with your guests soon at our Club .

Neville Brown President

By now you would have noticed renovation work in and around the Club and soon you will be able to experience the improvements as we bring the new gaming area online in early September. Construction will then begin at the front of the Club and is due for completion in mid November. There will be some disruption in this during the second phase with the TAB being temporarily moved downstairs to the snooker room. On behalf of everyone at the Club, I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to Gary Morrison of the Golf Sub-Club for receiving the honour of Club Member of the Year at our annual Club Member dinner held on Saturday 10 August 2013. I am proud to announce that we have officially amalgamated with Western Suburbs Australian football club (or Magpie sports). It has been a long process however the amalgamation will ensure the survival of a great family friendly venue in the local community. Magpie Sports has a tremendous AFL history and offers function and dining facilities, and numerous Sub-Clubs, so please join me in welcoming them to the CHP family. Through ClubGRANTS, we continue to be very active in supporting our local community in areas including sports, health and aged care, disability, youth, education and family services. Inside you will read more about the recent contributions we have made to the wonderful work of Koorana Child and Family Services. I would like to take this opportunity farewell one of our most dedicated and longest serving Members and Directors; Archie White, who recently passed away after a long illness. Archie was a kind and generous man had a wonderful history with our Club. We trust that he is at peace with his beloved wife Mary. I look forward to seeing you at the Club.

welcome

Magpie Sports Club Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club has officially amalgamated with Western Suburbs Australian Football Club Ltd (Magpie Sports) after Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club Members voted in favour of the amalgamation at the Extraordinary General Meeting held on 18 September 2012.

With a great reputation in the local area for providing authentic home cooked Italian cuisine, Paesani Restaurant is a perfect venue to get together with friends and family. Tony and Lina will be only too pleased to welcome and provide you with outstanding food and service.

The amalgamation will ensure the survival of a great sports venue in the local community and while renovations will soon commence to bring the Club to modern standards, this vibrant Club will be operating as usual. Magpie Sports offer affordable function and dining facilities, off-street parking, numerous Sub-Clubs and affiliations with local sporting groups, schools, charities and much more.

Magpie Sports is located at 40 Hampton Street, Croydon Park next to Picken Oval. For more information visit www.magpiesports.com.au or call (02) 9797 0347. We look forward to seeing many of you there in the near future.

“This an exciting time for Members of both Clubs and we look forward to a prosperous future where all members can enjoy the facilities of the CHP RSL Group. We welcome Members of Magpie Sports Club to the Canterbury Hurlstone Park family. said Club CEO,

Dean Thomas

History Although for many years the Club struggled to find a permanent home ground, the history of Western Suburbs Australian Football Club (Magpie Sports) dates back to 1947. Officially opening a club house in November 1962, Magpie Sports was the first Australian Rules Football Club to be granted a full license and is the only surviving licensed AFL Club in Sydney today. With a long and proud history, they have helped promote and propagate the game of AFL, even keeping the Sydney Swans alive when the threat of closure was imminent. The Club was a powerhouse for the game throughout the 1960s and 1970s, playing in 15 Grand Finals in 17 years and winning 8 Premierships.

Club Member

of the year 2013 One of our most active Members and local resident Gary Morrison, has been awarded the prestigious Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club, Member of the Year 2013. Born and raised in the UK, Gary’s family immigrated to Sydney in 1962 and started playing golf from the age of 12. He became a Member of the Club 23 years ago and in 2008 he joined the Golf SubClub where he has been an active participant ever since. Being an avid golfer, he has played on many golf courses in Australia and the UK including the famous St Andrews in Scotland. For many years, Gary has been on the general committee for the Golf Sub-Club and is currently the Secretary and Club Captain. He is the B Grade Club Champion, and has led and promoted the “Junior Golf Scholarship”. His role within the Sub-Club not only includes booking the courses and managing 21

Sub-Club Winners 2013

games throughout the year, at the end of the game, it’s Gary’s responsibility to tally and determine winners of the day for the different categories. He diligently records all scores throughout the year to determine the recipients for the annual trophies. After receiving his award Gary said, “It is such a surprise and honour to receive this recognition. I spend so much of my time at the Club surrounded by terrific friends, and being able to play golf is just the icing on the cake.” The Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club Member of the Year is selected from a pool of candidates nominated by their peers from the 12 sporting and social clubs within the RSL Club.

Vale Archie White It is with great sorrow that we announce the recent passing of former Director and Life Member of the Club, Archie White. Since joining Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL in June 1956, he has been awarded the esteemed position of Life Member of the Club , he was also a Life Member of the Sub-Branch; he has undoubtedly been one of our longest serving and most committed Members. Archie was well known to the Members and staff through his involvement with the Board and his regular visits to the Club with his late wife Mary. He had a kind, vibrant personality and a wonderful (often cheeky) sense of humour. In April 1996, Archie was elected to the Board of Directors as Treasurer and went on to be Junior Vice

President and ultimately Senior Vice President for many years. His contributions, commitment and countless hours of service have tremendously benefited the Club and Members. In particular Archie played a vital role in the successful purchase of the Club land from the Sub Branch in 2000. At the time the Club could not renovate and keep pace with other venues since it did not own the land on which it was built. The purchase of the land meant the Club could secure funding to proceed with the long awaited renovation and therefore remain competitive. Archie died peacefully on July 30 after a long illness. He is survived by his children Margaret and Alan, grandchildren Justin and Katrina and great grandchildren Liam and Caleb. He was 86.

New tri-generation plant to

Save THE CLUB $190,000 Annually As part of the Community Energy Efficiency Program, the Club is very proud to have received a $600,000 grant from the Federal Government to contribute to an innovative tri-generation system. In addition to the pivotal role the project will play in reducing greenhouse emissions and boosting productivity, the new system will reduce the Club’s energy consumption by 15%, equivalent of saving 1350 tonnes of carbon per annum or taking 300 cars off the road.

Savings derived from the reduction in power costs will kick start a sustainability program for the Club to invest in solar power and energy efficient lighting. Additionally, through increased cost savings the Club is able to increase financial support for the local community in which 20 percent of profits are donated through ClubGRANTS annually. The project is expected to be completed early next year.

ClubGRANTS Funding

Supporting Children with Special Needs Koorana Child and Family Services is a not-for-profit centre providing positive learning opportunities for children with special needs. A core focus is strengthening families through the provision of inclusive and family-focused services delivered through a diverse range of early education, intervention, and family support programs. The ‘Koorana Supported Playgroups – Park and Play’, is a mobile playgroup delivered in seven parks throughout the Canterbury district. Each of the parks caters to around 50 families from diverse backgrounds with a variety of needs. The $30,000 funding donated by Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club has enabled the centre to update their vehicle to adequately transport resources for the ever increasing number of families accessing the service.

“It has been through the generous support of donations from Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club that we have been able to add depth to our intervention programs and build capacity within the local community”. Koorana Chief Executive Officer, Vicki Battisti

Master Plan

in progress

If you have been to the Club recently you would have noticed the renovations are well underway! The loss of the stage end of the lounge has meant a temporary break for our lounge entertainment and created some challenges to accommodate other activities. Building works are currently creating a new elevated and opulent gaming lounge with a great view through to Botany Bay. The nearly completed expanded outdoor gaming vicinity will also see an increased capacity of gaming machines for this popular area of the Club.

extended and more ambient outdoor area adjoining Canterbury Road, the TAB and entertainment facilities. We invite you all to continue visiting and enjoying the Club’s offerings including events and promotions, as we move closer to the Master Plan goal of providing you with a new and improved Club. During this time, we appreciate your patience and look forward to seeing you enjoying the new renovations soon.

Renovations of the gaming lounge are due for completion in September where you will be rewarded with a greatly improved gaming experience. The next edition of Chevron will highlight updates on the new lounge area including a new bar,

Champions The Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club Snooker SubClub recently entered a six-man team to compete against 12 other teams in the Western Suburbs RSL competition. The Championship was off to a great start this year with four previous champions competing in the team. It was two all after four games which left Captain Gerry Newbold to play the decider match. After losing the first frame, he came back to win the last two frames in a great effort, winning the Finals against Gladesville RSL. Sub-Club Snooker President Maurice (“Morchork”) Shannon said, “We are very proud of our team, they did a terrific job. We’d also like to thank Gerry for forming the team and Club Management for their great support in providing refreshments for our team and visitors on completion of the games, the whole event was enjoyed by all.”
