President’s Report Welcome to the Spring edition of Chevron magazine. As I write this report, preparations are well underway for a range of commemoration events that the Club will hold in recognition for the Centenary of ANZAC. At the end of August, a community forum was held by the club ensuring that not only are we are working closely with local schools and their curriculum but also engaging the local community in remembering those who fought for the freedoms we enjoy today. Our Club’s first commemoration event will be held in November, in remembrance of when Australian troops departed Albany, Western Australia. Back at the club, in a matter of months our Members will be able to read stories of those who went to war and those back home by viewing the Club’s Recollections of War display which will go on show near the elevator on the lower ground floor. The Club and Sub-Branch Centenary of ANZAC Committee look forward to sharing Centenary of ANZAC commemorative news as it comes to hand. There’s never been a better time to dine, socialise and be entertained at the Club as you’ll see in this edition of Chevron. Melbourne Cup is just around the corner so be sure to mark Tuesday, 4 November in the diary for our marquee event (see p8). Don’t forget to come down and get a taste for the club’s weekly Member Meal Deals, or sample something from the new VIVA Bar & Grill Menu. Wine lovers won’t want to miss ‘A Taste of New Zealand’, with wines from Villa Maria, on Wednesday 10 September. There’s the ‘Summer Selections’ with Capel Vale and Sandalford Wines from the Margaret River on Wednesday 3 December. Give the cook a rest this Christmas and bring the family to the Club for Christmas lunch. We’ve got a spectacular 3-course Christmas Day Lunch planned and it’s just $75 for members or $85 for non-members. Bookings are essential. On behalf of the Board, thank you for making our club your club. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

CEO’s Report The Club has undergone a raft of changes since it first opened its doors to returned servicemen in 1947. When I reflect upon our accomplishments in the last 5 years alone, I’m reminded of how the Club continues to go from strength to strength – both as a community hub and a leading entertainment and dining destination. We’re making great inroads into Stage 2 of the Masterplan and, to date, the transformation has been remarkable. The latest stage sees a new level being added to our Canterbury Rd Carpark and an upgrade to our Club’s air conditioning infrastructure. We look forward to delivering an enhanced experience for Members and visitors and maintaining our commitment to delivering a 5 star experience. I would also like to acknowledge the contribution of all of our staff - who, through their efforts, make CHPRSL the club that it is today. Since the last Chevron much work has been taking place behind the scenes in preparation for a series of Centenary of ANZAC commemoration activities. The combined Club and Sub-Branch Centenary of ANZAC Committee are hard at work creating the Recollections of War display. It will serve as a focal point for Club Members and visitors, helping to bring Australia’s wartime history to life as we remember those who served and died in all wars, conflicts, alliance and peacekeeping operations. Our Club’s first major commemoration event takes place in November, marking 100 years since the first convoy set sail from Albany carrying Australian and New Zealand troops to the First World War. To Members and visitors, we are very proud of our club. Without your continued patronage it wouldn’t be half the club it is today. Thank you for your support.

Dean Thomas Chief Executive Officer Neville Brown President

Thankyou for your patience while we upgrade the multi-level car park - additional parking is available on Crinan St.

at Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club

Christmas in July with all the trimmings The Christmas spirit was alive and well as guests dined on winter fare with all the trimmings when Christmas In July featuring the Enormous Horns came to the Club on July 26. Over 200 Members and guests dined on a three-course Christmas feast, complete with turkey, ham and traditional plum pudding. Comedian Dave Burke gave diners plenty of laughs while party band The Enormous Horns had everyone up on the dance floor with hits from today, disco and even the Blues. A good time was had by all with everyone looking forward to an even bigger and better Christmas In July 2015!

Kids loved patting a python and seeing dogs perform incredible tricks.

Jaws and Paws attracts plenty of applause Hundreds of kids jumped at the chance to pat a python, love a lizard and see show dogs ride skateboards and jump through hoops during the ‘Jaws and Paws’ show at the Club on July 9. Kids of all ages and their families enjoyed fabulous school holiday fun during the educational and entertaining Jaws and Paws show. Kids crowded around herpetologist Tony Scalas as they held lizards, patted pythons and learned about Australian reptiles.

The Canterbury Rd car park upgrade is underway in addition to work on upgrading the Club’s air conditioning system, as part of the Club’s five-year $15m Masterplan. Works on upgrades to the car park has commenced with a whole new level being added creating room for an extra 80 vehicles. The whole car park will end up with a much brighter, airier feel, but more importantly, a brand new lift, improved lighting and better security, bringing it up to modern standards. conditioning infrastructure is being done in our bid to deliver improved and consistent levels of Member comfort. As part of this initiative, new chillers and cooling towers are being installed, delivering new levels of reliability, energy efficiency and year-round performance. We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience you may experience while the works are underway. We always aim to ensure Members have a great experience when visiting the Club and will do everything possible to ensure disruptions are kept to a minimum.

The CHPRSL Staff Golf Team, including CEO Dean Thomas, took out the major prize for the inaugural Archie White Memorial Sporting Challenge on Sunday July 13, an event held to honour the late Archie White. Four teams - three from the Golf Sub-Club and one of staff from the Club - teed off at the leisurely hour of 7.30am at the Marrickville Golf Course, which was affectionately named the ‘Royal Marrickville on Cook’ by Archie who was a Life Member and Member for over 50 years.

Joel Dunn, Frank Hanger, Kevin Stokes Jim Urquhart and Roger Harriman.

Each attendee paid $25 to participate. Entry fees covered the green fees along with a goodie bag containing a golf ball, premium pitch mark repairer, bag of tees, $10 discount voucher and an information brochure on macular degeneration, a disease of the retina which Archie White suffered from late in life. $200 was raised during the golf course Challenge, and a further $671.50 during a club raffle. After monies added by the Club, a total of $1,000 was donated to Macular Disease Foundation Australia. Chevron 7

Centenary When you enter the Club and take a sharp right, you’ll see a condolence book behind glass. The condolence book, which acknowledges Members of the Sub-Branch who have passed away, contains the names of 55 soldiers who served in World War I. More than a century after the Great War began, Sub-Branch Secretary Ken McIntyre and Treasurer Bill McLaren have been working tirelessly to reveal the stories behind each of the names. “The searches are quite painstaking and often very moving,” Ken said. “We often read through letters from family members searching for news of loved ones, or letters home about injuries and suffering. The Sub-Branch wants to tell those stories – about what

soldiers at the front experienced, and the stories of the people back home.” Commemoration initiatives will begin in November The Club’s commemoration activities commence in November, in remembrance of when Australian troops left Albany in Western Australia. Later this year CHPRSL will be holding a Commemoration Ball, featuring swing music and dress from the WW1 era. Additionally, a Recollections of War display is also in planning, to be featured in an new dedicated area downstairs. The display will feature images and stories about life during the First World War – at war and at home.

A C A L L T O ME MB E R

we will remember them

Lest we forget

At 11am on 11 November 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than 4 years of continuous warfare. This year marks the 96th anniversary of the Armistice. Australians pause to remember those who fought and died for Australia’s cause in all wars and armed conflicts on the 11th hour of the 11th month every year. There will be a Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Club’s Bert Crook Memorial from 10:45am for an 11am start. There will be a Catafalque Party re-enactment unit, a wreath laying ceremony and service, followed by morning tea in the Club.

Remembrance Day

Does a friend or a member of your family have a connection to The First World War? Is there something tucked away in your family’s archives – a photo, a medal, a letter, for example? Perhaps a member of your family was a wartime caregiver, an administrator, or a civilian with a tale to tell. We’d love to hear stories from the local community – stories of comradeship, tales of humour, bravery, and everything in between, to remember the service and sacrifice of Australians in WW1. Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club and the Sub-Branch Centenary of ANZAC Committee have created a joint fund for local commemoration activities. The Club and Committee are working with local schools, Councils and community groups to mark the Centenary of ANZAC and would like to share your stories. Cooks River Sporting Alliance delivers support for sport More than 1,500 students from 10 local primary schools tried out five summer sports in July, as part of the Carnival of the Codes. Held over 5 days in July, students sampled Cricket, Little Athletics, Lawn Bowls, Touch Footy and Basketball. They discovered how much fun it is to head outdoors and hit a six, jump a hurdle, bowl a lawn bowl, pass a footy and shoot hoops. In groups of around 30, students were given a 20-minute sample of each summer sport under the supervision of

qualified coaches and Year 10 Canterbury Boys High School students. Designed to boost participation through local community sports clubs, Carnival of the Codes was formed by the Cooks River Sporting Alliance (CRSA), a Club initiative headed by Community Sports/ ClubGRANTS Coordinator Paul Kougias. The CRSA was established in 2013 in response to findings that local sporting clubs’ participation rates were in a state of decline. The Club consulted with 40 local community organisations to pinpoint

innovative ways to reverse this trend, and to deliver valuable resources to ensure the health of local sporting clubs and their programs. The CRSA and the Carnival of the Codes both developed following this consultation process. The next Carnival of the Codes, to be held in February 2015, is anticipated to be even bigger and better. Pictured: Canterbury Public School students Nathan Gil (with basketball), Alexandra Barker (with cricket bat), Spencer Smith (with javelin), Roisin McCarthy-Blood (rugby ball) and Maddy Haller (with lawn bowls).

Sub-Clubs Fishing Club Members hooked on a great day out! The CHPRSL Deep Sea Fishing Club began around 40 years ago and today the group is stronger than ever. On the fourth Sunday of every month Fishing Club Members, both men and women, head out on a 60-foot vessel chartered from Mystery Bay Charters. The expedition departs from Thames Street Wharf in Balmain at 5am and returns around 3pm. The 10-hour trip costs just $30 per person! On a good day, buckets are filled to the brim with Flat Head, Morwong, Leather Jackets and plenty more. On the way to the fishing grounds Members can participate in trolling for game fish on a rota basis. There’s often a decent catch to take home and enjoy, fresh from the ocean. New Members who are not equipped with fishing gear will be assisted by the Club for a short period of time. Newly inducted Members simply have to provide their own bait.

A fresh new Viva Bar & Grill It’s been 18 months since we introduced our existing Grill Menu and after receiving your feedback, we’re pleased to announce our Executive Chef is putting the finishing touches on a fresh new menu. Viva Bar & Grill will offer an expanded Menu featuring old favourites alongside a range of modern dishes that everyone will be wanting to try. At the same time we intend to expand the range of product available from the bar including a wider range of wines and cocktails all delivered by a higher level of service by our staff. New menu items include… Seasonal blackboard specials each week, a range of new entrées including more seafood, a larger range of grill items including hearty cuts of steak, fish, chicken and seasonal salads give everyone a greater choice of mains. In addition to adding the popular Pork Ribs to the menu, we will be expanding the range of ribs to include both lamb and beef.

German Wine

Introducing the ‘Chef’s Chop Block’ Sure to become our signature dish, the ‘Chef’s Chop Block’ will bring a contemporary new dining experience to the Viva Bar & Grill. Served to your table by a Chef on a traditional chopping block, the spread will include: a sample of all three Ribs, two Lamb Tomahawk Cutlets, a 600g Rib Eye Steak on the Bone, Char-grilled Chicken Breast accompanied by shoestring fries, corn on the cob, mushrooms and grilled truss tomatoes. We encourage you to come and try the new Viva Bar & Grill when it re-launches during September. Stay tuned for updates…
