President’s Report Dear Members, Welcome to the April-May Edition of Chevron magazine. It’s a only a short message from me this month and I would like to take this opportunity to encourage everyone come along and join with us during the special Anzac Commemoration events being scheduled at our Club. This year marks 100 years since Australian and New Zealand soldiers joined together and landed in Gallipoli, also at this time it is important that during this Anzac Centenary Commemoration we remember not only the original Anzacs who served at Gallipoli and on the Western Front, but that we also remember with much respect the many dedicated servicemen and women who have given their service and lives over more than a century. Also, please keep in touch for our “Year in Review 2014” in which I’ll keep you up to date on how our Club has been travelling and share some other exciting news with you. You will also receive information about our Annual General Meeting which will be held on Tuesday 5 May. On behalf of the Board, thank you once again for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you at our AGM.

Bargo Sports – New ‘family friendly’ alfresco area We are pleased to announce that work on the new outdoor areas at Bargo Sports is nearing completion. Opening on 28 March, the development includes an extension of the existing deck, offering a covered alfresco dining area that leads onto a large lawn area with plenty of picnic-style tables and chairs. Kids will be kept busy with a large undercover play area while Members and guests sit back and enjoy the new menu, which features share plates, fresh salads, pastas, grills and classic Club favourites. Next time you are looking for something new to try, or you’re heading down to the Southern Highlands, why not stop in at Bargo Sports for a relaxing afternoon on the green.
Construction is underway on the new covered alfresco dining area that leads onto a large lawn area with picnic-style tables and chairs: plenty to enjoy at Bargo Sports Club.
Ute or the Loot winner The Club was buzzing on Thursday 12 February when the Major Draw for our ‘Ute or the Loot’ promotion was held. The evening had everyone on the edge of their seats with the draw going down to the wire for the Holden Commodore Ute keys that were found in the second last box! The winning Member Dimitrios Perrotis couldn’t have been happier with his prize, opting to take the $25,000 ‘loot’ instead of the car, which was kindly provided by Muirs Holden Ashfield. Congratulations to Dimitrios Perrotis who opted to take the ‘loot’ instead of the car.

1. At the Members’ Cabaret, Neville and Beverly Brown enjoyed a great meal and entertainment from Peter Byrne and The Australian Mega Star. 2. Frozen fans were enchanted by the Club’s Frozen Christmas Spectacular. 3. New Year’s Eve fun with Frankie J Holden and Wilbur Wilde. 4. Romance and celebrations of friendship on Valentine’s Day.
The festive spirit was alive and well at the Club over the summer months, with an entertainment calendar packed with special events. There was entertainment galore at the Members’ Cabaret evenings late last November. Members enjoyed a great meal accompanied by entertainment from ‘Forever Diamond’ Peter Byrne and The Australian Mega Star. Meanwhile young Frozen fans and the young at heart were enchanted by the Club’s Frozen Christmas Spectacular and a range of other events held across several weekends in November and December (Santa Visits, the Children’s Christmas Show, a screening of Frozen the movie and $25,000 in Toy and Ham Raffles).
On Australia Day Members and guests soaked in all-day entertainment with a little help from country entertainer Wayne Horsburgh who travelled from Branson, Missouri to bring his own brand of country to the crowd. Romance reigned on Valentine’s Day and guests left with full bellies and even fuller hearts, with a fresh, delicious three-course dinner and the Jersey To Motown show. More recently the Club ushered in the Year Of The Sheep with magical entertainment including glow-in-the-dark lions, the God of Wealth and a fortune writing calligrapher. The festive season was enjoyed by all, and the Club is looking forward to providing Members and guests with plenty of good times in the months ahead.
New Year’s Eve at the Club was a night to remember, thanks to singer, actor and TV presenter Frankie J Holden and the talented saxophonist and funny man, Wilbur Wilde, performing to a good humoured crowd wearing LED party head dress and singing “Auld Lang Syne”. Many accompanied Wilbur on their New Year’s party horns.
A visiting fortune writing calligrapher made special messages for Members and guests celebrating the Chinese New Year.

new Tri-Generation System The Club is powering up a new Tri-Generation System, cutting carbon footprint by one third and reducing annual energy costs by up to $185,000, providing savings that can be reinvested back into the Club and the community. What is a Tri-Generation System? Tri-Generation is the simultaneous production of three forms of energy: electricity, heating and cooling from a single system. It is nearly three times more energy efficient than a coalfired power station. “From an energy cost savings point of view, we can invest even more funds into real benefits for Members and the community,” CHP RSL Club CEO Dean Thomas says. CHP RSL Club anticipates complete cost recovery from the Tri-Generation System within 4 years. Designed and installed by Simons Green Energy, the energy system will provide the Club with cleaner electricity while converting waste heat into space heating and cooling. The energy system will deliver annual average savings of $185,000 with a carbon emissions reduction of 1,590 tonnes per annum – equivalent to taking 352 cars a year off the road. With $583,072 received in grant funding from the Australian Government, the expected return on investment for the trigeneration system is 35% per annum. CHART 1 - How Does Tri-Generation System work?
Recently completed MasterPlan projects • 80 new car spaces in the Canterbury Rd car park. The car park upgrade includes improved security, lighting and a new lift to Ground Floor level. Current projects • A $300,000 upgrade to the Bert Crook Memorial, in time for Anzac Day commemorations (see pages 12 & 13). • An elegant rejuvenation to the Club’s façade for improved street appeal. • New carpet, paint and chairs for the Auditorium (mid 2015). • Further improvements to furniture and levels of comfort for Members and guests. • Upgraded wireless technology to provide Members with a significantly improved Wi-Fi service.

Club and community to leave a lasting legacy Over the next four years, the CHP RSL Club and Sub-Branch Centenary of Anzac Committee are organising a range of commemorative initiatives to both honour and remember the original ANZACs who served at Gallipoli and on the Western Front, to mark a century of service and sacrifice encompassing all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations in which Australians have been involved.
Centenary projects at the Club The Bert Crook Memorial is receiving a $300,000 upgrade, co-funded by CHP RSL Club and the CHP RSL Sub-Branch and will be officially open at 5pm on Friday 17 April. A Centenary of Anzac Time Capsule is being created by inner west schools in conjunction with the Club. The time capsule will be placed into the ground under a specially marked square tile in front of the Bert Crook Memorial, and it will be unearthed on ANZAC DAY in 30 years’ time. Local students are involved in a Local Honour Roll Project to help them know and appreciate areas of significance, retelling the stories of those who have served. Local students are mapping local sites of wartime significance.
ANZAC Day @ Magpie Sports
The ANZAC Schools Program The Club has been working closely with local schools to build a program of events and initiatives to help ensure the next generation maintains a connection with the stories and sacrifices of our country’s servicemen, servicewomen, and those who supported them at home and overseas. School initiatives include:
‘The Anzac Spirit’ by Croydon Park Primary Selected Year 6 students are building an interpretive sculpture of the Anzacs, based on students’ research into the stories of the Anzacs, their courage and their achievements.
‘Ashbury Anzacs’ by Ashbury Primary School Year 5 and 6 students are producing a series of sonnets based on the stories behind young men whose names feature on the Ashbury Honour Roll. The sonnets, which will tell stories from the men’s’ lives, will be accompanied with hand-drawn black and white images.
‘Anzacs: Mateship, Conflict and Remembrance’ by Canterbury Primary School Students are exploring the events leading up to and during World War I, and the war’s impact on Australia and Australians, visiting the Hyde Park Memorial, the Cenotaph and the Club to enrich their understanding of the Anzacs. Students are creating and co-ordinating a whole-school ANZAC Day service on Friday April 24, participating in the 2015 Schools Remember ANZAC event at the ANZAC Memorial at Hyde Park on 23 April, and participating in the Club’s ANZAC Day service on Saturday 25 April. Students will also be creating a mural, incorporating sketching, writing, knitted poppies, painting, artifacts, photographs and service records. They are also developing a series of video clips, journal entries and artworks.
12.30pm ANZAC service will be held on the oval followed by laying of the wreaths and the Last Post and National Anthem. Flags and Rosemary will be available on the day. In the event of wet weather – service to be held in the Skyline Room. 1pm West’s Magpies to play against Pennant Hills on the oval. For enquiries call 9797 0347. 12 Chevron
