What’s been happening… at Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club New Years Eve 31 December 2013
Members and Guests celebrated the arrival of 2014 at the Club in spectacular style. The Nathan Foley Band performed classic hits from the 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond as guests danced the night away.
Chinese New Year Celebrations 30 January 2014
Members, guests and commuters on Canterbury Road enjoyed Chinese New Year’s Eve celebrations outside the Club as a special Chinese Lion Pole Dance performed a joyous and dynamic mix of martial arts and dance spectacular. Two hours of entertainment also included fireworks, an awe-inspiring Chinese Magician and a Masked Duo spreading luck and good fortune by handing out lucky gold coins to everyone on the night. Throughout the New Year period, the Club installed a 22m suspended dragon made entirely of balloons, weaving it’s way throughout the Club.

President’s Report Dear Members, At this time each year we provide our financial results for the previous year and on behalf of the Board of Directors, it gives me much pleasure to announce 2013 was another record year with a net profit of $4,163,145. Our CEO, Dean Thomas, provides more detail in his report on the financials for the Club. During the past year, you would have noticed a significant amount of construction and renovation throughout our Club. Although the renovations caused some disruptions, the much anticipated new Bar and Lounge as well as the expanded indoor and outdoor gaming areas has been very successful. We have received significant positive feedback regarding our Club being a great social entertainment venue and the exceptional quality of our food and beverage as well as our friendly and efficient customer service has been complimented on by many Members and guests.

2013 was a great success for our Lifestyle Classes and Sub-Clubs, with hundreds of new Members taking the opportunity to make new friends and enjoy life while keeping a healthy mind, body and spirit. I encourage everyone to participate as we move into 2014 with a positive attitude for health and well-being.
Net Profit 2013
This year being the Centenary of WW1 (1914 -2014) our ANZAC Day and Commemoration Sunday Service is of special significant remembrance to our Club and Members, and we hope you will join with us at this special time.
Growth on 2012
We have some great entertainment scheduled in the coming months, the brilliant iconic Glenn Shorrock and Brian Cadd are on stage together, special Easter events are happening throughout the Club, and our always popular ANZAC Member’s Cabaret, so book early to avoid disappointment. Remember Mother’s Day isn’t too far away so don’t forget to make a note in your diary to spoil that special lady with a very special dining experience at our Club. As the football season is about to kick off, we invite you to come and watch all the action on the big screen in the new Bar and Lounge and enjoy the festivities and fun of Footy Fever. It was with sorrow in 2013 we farewelled, former Director and Life Member of the Club, Archie White. As one of our longest serving and committed Members, Archie was well-known to many throughout our Club and although he has passed on, his personality and enjoyment of life will not be forgotten, he will always be in our thoughts. In closing, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow Board Members for their valued support and contributions during the past year. Also, our CEO Dean Thomas, the Management Team and to all the staff who year after year continue to demonstrate great partnership and dedication in providing our Members and guests with an outstanding Club experience. The Board of Directors, Management Team and staff are all extremely proud of the financial results and we realise this would not be possible without the loyal support of our Members and for this we sincerely thank you. As highlighted in last year’s ‘Year in Review’ 2013 was a successful year of strong financial growth, enabling us to significantly reinvest into the Club. With some disruption, we are very pleased that Phase 1 of our 3 Phase Masterplan was officially completed, encompassing the new and expanded indoor and outdoor lounges, bar and gaming areas. Another major milestone was the completion of the long awaited amalgamation between your Club and Western Suburbs Australian Football Club (Magpie Sports). The renovations and refurbishments to the Club are very near completion and we look forward to Magpies becoming a prosperous member of your Club family.

2013 was also a great year for ClubGRANTS as we donated your largest ever contribution of $997,708 to local hospitals, sporting groups, aged care and disability services, education and many more not-for-profit organisations within your local community. We anticipate that in 2014 we will reach the $1,000,000 mark! Moving into the new year we will continue to invest significantly in the Members facilities. We will be spending $3.5 million in plant equipment to improve the energy and efficiency of the Clubs infrastructure, in particular the air-conditioning systems for the comfort of our Members. Additionally, in the next edition of Chevron, we will announce more information regarding Phase 2 of the Masterplan, with some exciting new projects soon to be underway.

Commencing in 2014, the Club will commemorate the ANZAC Centenary. With special significance for all Australians, the Centenary marks 100 years since our involvement in the First World War, a war that helped defined us as a nation. During the Centenary we will remember not only the original ANZACs who served at Gallipoli and the Western Front, but commemorate contributions by Australian servicemen and women encompassing all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. In particular, this is an opportunity to honour their service, including the more than 102,000 who have made the supreme sacrifice.

CRSA Batting Home Runs 2014 is off to a flying start as the Cooks River Sporting Alliance (CRSA) active presence in the local community continues to increase. The Summer Hill Cricket Club ran school holiday clinics in mid-January and although there was a nominal fee for participants to join, the clinics were predominantly able to run thanks to the generous financial support provided by Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club’s ClubGRANTS program.
With much needed sun shade relief for players, the Club’s CRSA initiative also purchased two marquees (as pictured) and fitted a side awning to a seven-seater van recently purchased by Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club. These CRSA shelters, along with the van can be used at multiple clinics and sporting related events throughout the year and has saved the Cricket Club a significant amount of revenue. This initiative is part of a broader strategy for the CRSA which came out of
the recent forum attended by representatives from local schools and sporting groups. Running sporting programs in schools is becoming more and more difficult and the CRSA in conjunction with local sporting clubs can ease the burden and provide good value alternatives. There is an exciting deal more in the pipeline so stay tuned for future updates as 2014 progresses.
HR Awards Every year the Club holds an exciting annual party for the team as a way to thank everyone for their hard work. The 2013 event was held at an exclusive Sydney CBD location and themed 1920’s Great Gatsby. Team members from the newly amalgamated Magpies Sports Club were also in attendance and a fantastic time was had by all! The highlight of the evening was the announcement of our Annual Team Awards. These Awards recognize the efforts, participation and outstanding service delivered by our team members to our patrons over the course of the year. The winners of the Team Awards were as follows:
We congratulate all Finalists and Winners of these Awards and look forward to another fantastic year in 2014.
