President’s Report
CEO’s Report
With the festive season and holiday period over for another year, we look forward to 2013 and the new and exciting events that will be happening. Our Members and Guests can look forward to a special month of Chinese New Year celebrations welcoming in ‘the Year of the Snake’ so don’t miss this cultural experience with traditional Lion Dance and delicious food that will be on offer at our very popular Mama Wong’s Chinese restaurant. Valentine’s Day is always a special time to spoil that very important person in your life and this year promises to again be a memorable experience with a delicious menu in our ‘Viva Room’ so don’t forget to book early. Also on this day for those who enjoy country music we have a great line up of Canterbury Country artists performing in our Auditorium. Other exciting shows scheduled to welcome in the New Year include the return of the very popular group Abbalanche, the legendary Tony Joe White will perform for one night only and a unique Mardi Gras Burlesque spectacle. This year’s Seniors Week is being held between the 17th and 24th of March and we have a great line up of entertainment scheduled on Wednesday the 20th of March, including a concert starring the iconic Carlotta and her new show ‘Life’s still a Drag’. We are also looking forward to the Annual Member’s ANZAC Cabaret & Dinner Dance on the 12th and 13th of April – these are always sell out events so please buy your tickets early to avoid disappointment. On behalf of myself and our Board of Directors, thank you once again for your continued support, it is always much appreciated.
Members, Happy New Year! It’s a warm welcome to 2013 as this edition of Chevron has all the information and entertainment you need to get the year off to a flying start, commencing with Chinese New Year celebrations and Double Happiness promotion, where our lucky winners can walk away with up to $888 or even double it, five times a day! I’d like to invite you to come down and enjoy a traditional Lion Dance and special appearance by the God of Wealth who will be spreading good fortune throughout the Club on Chinese New Year’s Eve, Saturday, February 9 from 8pm onwards. Mama Wong is also offering delicious meal deals with buy one get one free throughout the month of February. You may have noticed the fresh look uniforms and grooming of our front and back of house team. These were exclusively designed for our Club to not only present a professional image but were fit for purpose and comfort, and everyone is impressed by the new sharp image. We are firmly committed to supporting grass roots sporting clubs, which are often neglected, but are a vital element of our community. In the last issue of Chevron we announced the inauguration of the Cooks River Sporting Alliance and are proud to say that already significant progress has been made with numerous sporting associations, including the Hurlstone Park Wanderer’s Football Club, Summer Hill Cricket, Canterbury Rugby and Canterbury Little Athletics. The Board of Directors and Management have been working on developing plans to ensure the long term prosperity of the Club. Over the coming issues of Chevron, we look forward to sharing with you many of the exciting new developments planned. I look forward to seeing you here soon.

Dean Thomas – CEO, Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club Hot Tip: Roosters (Editors note, Dean is a one eyed Chooks fan!) Teams to Watch: Sharks & Bulldogs will fight it out Andy Paschalidis – Media Personality, Former Football Player and Hurlstone Park Wanderers Junior and more recently, Fundraising & Partnership Manager for the Special Olympics Australia. Hot Tip: The Tigers might have lost some key players for this season but I dream of more golden days just like the 1969 Grand Final win against Souths at the SCG. I remember that 11-2 victory just like it was yesterday. Teams to Watch: It would be remiss of me to not to mention the Bulldogs and the Melbourne Storm. (Melbourne is my second favourite Greek city behind Salonika!!)

introducing… our new
Executive Chef Accomplished and talented Executive Chef, Paul Stranger recently joined the Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club team, and has been busy with his team working on refreshing the menus for Members and guests to experience. Paul brings a wealth of experience having worked throughout Europe, UK and South Africa. Highlights of his career include being awarded a prestigious Michelin Star (Cafe Uno in Bath, UK) and ‘Best Italian Restaurant’ in London. His career includes working at the Sheraton Hotel in Shanghai, as a Chef for the South African Embassy in Rome and aboard luxury yachts in the Mediterranean. Since arriving in Sydney in the late 90’s, Chef has worked at a number of establishments that provided fine dining, functions, banquets and buffets enabling him to demonstrate his capability in a variety of environments. This included positions as Executive Chef for Rydges Hotels (Wentworth and Parramatta) in addition to The Epping Club, which under his leadership received awards for ‘Best Club – Functions’ and ‘Angus Restaurant of the Year’. “I am truly excited by the opportunity to be working here, it’s a Chef’s dream to work in a new state-of-the-art kitchen that provides me the opportunity to showcase my skills by providing a revitalised dining experience,” said Paul While many favourite meals will remain the same, 2013 will be an exciting year for dining at the Club. The new menus will focus more on fresh produce, a modern take on old classics and the introduction of some new healthy lifestyle dishes, something for everyone! r d a passion fo have always ha I k in . th I ds ho k? your wor cooking met old fashioned What inspires od go ve . lo ng I vi d ays evol food an ating as its alw authentic fresh e of food fascin nc ie sc e th d I also fin Canterbury working at t and enjoy about ork environmen w ’ ily m What do you ‘fa e Th ? re about Club ca L ly al RS k agement re an m d Hurlstone Par an f af st really is more innovate. Celebrating
our community In early December 2012, community representatives gathered at the Club for a morning tea to celebrate contributions of $835,000 made to over 100 organisations, including schools, sporting groups and charities in the Canterbury District.
“Clubs have been at the heart of the community for many years, providing local groups and charities with encouragement and support. Bringing communities together and being able to give back is the basis of what RSL’s are built upon and something we are very proud of.” Dean Thomas, CEO of Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club
The ClubGRANTS program is a state-wide initiative introduced in 1998 (formally Community Development and Support Expenditure Scheme). Clubs that earn over $1 million annually in gaming machine revenue are to provide funding for community projects.
14 Chevron
“Year after year, we commit to funding more than what is legally required by ClubGRANTS with 2012 being no exception as our contribution will amount to over 20 per cent of our annual profit. The community is our foundation and we will continue to support the area in where we live and breathe, including sports, health and aged care, disability, youth, education and family services, they are all so vitally important,” said Dean.
Collectively, they have successfully supported a range of charities and not-for-profit organisations throughout the Canterbury Local Government Area. The scheme has had a tremendous impact on both large charitable organisations as well as smaller localised services. They have gained valuable resources and support, ultimately from their own community.
Part of the ClubGRANTS budget is overseen by a committee of local Clubs and Canterbury Council.
With 2013 now underway, we look forward to continuing our support of many of these organisations and even more…
Cooks River Sporting Alliance
leaps into 2013 Launched in November 2012, the Cooks River Sporting Alliance has already begun to make significant steps, as possibilities of how the Alliance will positively impact the community are starting to unfold. A working group consisting of local sporting clubs has been formed having had their first meeting in late November 2012. The group has begun to discuss ideas about what can be done to alleviate many burdensome administrative functions. The sporting clubs are also keen to explore ways to maximise their exposure to local schools to promote participation. Ultimately this will connect them with local families, promote healthy living through sports participation, and provide schools their own sporting programs. Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club is in a unique position to provide local sporting clubs a connection to local schools through the ClubGRANTS program, where in 2012 over $160,000 was donated to various school programs. Progress has already been made on behalf of Canterbury Rugby Club where the local Participation Officer, employed by the Australian Rugby Union, was introduced to local schools offering them free rugby clinics. The schools were more than happy to take advantage of this service while Canterbury Rugby promoted their upcoming registrations for the 2013 season.
This is a real win-win for everyone involved and highlights the tremendous potential for Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club to support the community further. Less than adequate facilities are a considerable hurdle to future growth of the local sporting community, as many parks are overdue for an upgrade or simply do not meet the demands of modern society. Another key element of the Cooks River Sporting Alliance will be to work on bringing local sporting clubs together to investigate potential shared facilities. Finding new space in Sydney’s Inner West is near impossible, but reconfiguring what we have is one way forward. Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club will utilise extensive contacts with all levels of government to put forward projects and apply for grants to improve local sporting infrastructure.

Golf Sub-Club Celebrating over 55 Years of Golfing History For many years Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club and the Board of Directors have supported a variety of Sub-Clubs for members, providing recreational and social activities for men, women and children of all ages. The Golf Sub-Club’s history dates back to before 1957 where the first name on the Championship Trophy can be found, although many believe the Club was formed much earlier with the RSL Club being established in 1947. According to Golf Sub-Club President, Ron Williamson: “Our Sub-Club has a long and proud tradition and the ongoing support we receive from the Club and the Board of Directors is second to none. Although the exercise and health benefits are undisputed, most of our members really enjoy the social aspect and we are always looking for new members.”
Every year a game or two are played outside the Sydney area and although it’s an early departure from the Club, transportation is provided along with a barbeque and presentations being held after the game. “Overall everyone has a great day and it’s a wonderful opportunity to socialise and make new friends,” said Ron. In 2012, Members played over 20 games at 17 different Golf Courses across Sydney and throughout Regional NSW. Each game costs just $25 (often subsidised) and played on a Sunday, usually teeing off at 6.30am. New members of all ages and levels are encouraged to join. Contact Ron on 0408 264 441 for more details or visit: http://www.chprsl.com.au/subclubs.aspx
