President’s Report

CEO’s Report

Welcome to the Summer edition of Chevron magazine. It’s been an exciting and busy couple of months at your Club, beginning with the start of our Commemoration activities with a Spectacular Commemoration Ball on Friday 7 November. What a wonderful evening it was as guests stepped back in time to reconnect with the Australia of 1914, a time when our country prepared to commit and support our European allies on the battlefront. It was a journey marked by youth, commitment and sacrifice. Our guests were charmed to experience hospitality from an era in which Australia lived with enthusiasm and innocence. We were honoured by the attendance of our special guest The Hon. Dr. Brendan Nelson. In coming months we have great entertainment scheduled. Don’t miss ‘Members’ Christmas Cabaret’ on 28 & 29 November, featuring Peter Byrne with his spectacular Neil Diamond Show. Book now to avoid disappointment. For your children and those young at heart, come along to the ‘Frozen’ Christmas Spectacular on 30 November and 7 December. Meet the characters from ‘Frozen’ and have a special photo with Santa. Looking ahead, make a note for Australia Day 2015. Be sure to visit our Club for a special party on 26 January. Enjoy a delicious treat ($29 Mixed Grill Platter or $69 Seafood Platter) and relax with live Aussie music in the Main Bar from 1pm-5pm with country entertainer Wayne Horsburgh, Bob Howe on guitar and Greg Hooper on keyboards. For wine lovers don’t forget the ‘Summer Selections Wine Night’ on Wednesday 3 December, presenting, for your enjoyment, a selection of Margaret River wines from Capel Vale and Sandalford wineries in Western Australia. Our special guest wine presenter will enlighten you on this special area while you enjoy canapés and a delicious 4 course menu prepared by our talented chefs. The Club and Sub-Branch Centenary of ANZAC Committee invite you to join with us as we launch a range of Special Commemorative events in 2014 and beyond. On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for your loyal support. We wish everyone a healthy and happy Christmas and New Year.

Season’s Greetings to everyone and welcome to our final edition of the Chevron magazine for 2014. The year has just flown by, and if you’ve visited the Club in recent months you will have noticed the work being carried out on the Multilevel Car Park. The additional levels, part of Stage 2 works in our 5 year Masterplan, will be completed by Christmas, with the finishing touches – a significant upgrade to the Bert Crook Memorial and the Canterbury Road façade – to be finished in time for major Centenary of Anzac Commemorations in April 2015. Commemoration activities have commenced at the Club, with the Commemoration Ball on Friday 7 November, attended by Victoria Cross recipient Keith Payne and his wife Florence, Don Rowe, The Hon Anthony Albanese MP, representatives from the RSL Sub-Branch, officials and members of our local community. We were honoured to welcome Dr. Brendan Nelson, Director of the Australian National War Memorial, who presented a deeply moving speech. The evening took guests back to 1914 - to a time even before the acronym ‘ANZAC’ came into everyday use, illuminated in a conversation between the School Captain of Canterbury Boys High School Michael Wright and a Ghost Soldier. This was a significant event, and we look forward to bringing you news of further commemorative events over the coming years. The ClubGRANTS year concluded in August, and I’m pleased to inform you that our investment in community projects this year exceeded $1.05 million that was distributed across almost 100 groups. In other major news about our Club, we’re pleased to announce that through our wholly-owned subsidiary, Camperdown Project Pty Ltd, we are revitalising the old Camperdown Bowling Club on Mallett St, Camperdown. It’s an exciting milestone in the history of our Club as we continue to look for select opportunities where we can diversify our business and use our expertise to deliver value to Members. On behalf of all the staff I would like to wish our Members a safe and happy Christmas and also thank you for your ongoing patience as we continue to make enhancements to your Club. See you at the Club soon.

Neville Brown President

Dean Thomas Chief Executive Officer

Thankyou for your patience while we upgrade the multi-level car park - additional parking is available on Crinan St.

What’s been happening…

at Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club

Melbourne Cup Day Winner

Jer sey to Motow n

From Les Girls to Tre’ Cool, CanterburyHurlstone Park RSL burst with action this Melbourne Cup, ‘Marquee Style.’ Carlotta brought the house down in the Starlight Showroom with not a single guest leaving without their cheeks hurting. The boys from Jersey to Motown had everyone on their feet rocking to all the hits from 60’s, 70’s & 80’s and Sheena Crouch did the original pop diva proud with her Dusty Springfield Show. The CHP Cup ran at 9pm where 12 lucky members won a share of over $5,000 cash. Thank you to all our Members and guests for celebrating Melbourne Cup at Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club and we look forward to bringing you a bigger and better day next year. Carlotta

Ladies Fashion

Flashbacks at Absolutely 80s It was a packed dance floor when performers from some of Australia’s biggest 80s bands took to the stage at the Absolutely 80s show on 25 October. The spectacular Aussie supergroup, made up of 5 pop idols from the 80s featured Brian Mannix (Uncanny X-Men), Dale Ryder (Boom Crash Opera), Scott Carne (Kids In The Kitchen), Paul Gray (Wa Wa Nee) and David Sterry (Real Life), didn’t disappoint the crowds who, in the Starlight Auditorium, were transported back to a time when men’s eyeliner was big and hair even bigger. The reminiscent crowd heard 80s classics like Onion Skin, Send Me An Angel, Stimulation, Everybody Wants to Work and Change in Mood.

Club Member of the Year - Sub Club Winners

Club Member of the Year 2013 One of our most recognised and active Members of the Club and Sub-Branch, Beryl “Bobbie” Stephenson, has been awarded the 2013 Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club Member of the Year award. Sub-Club Members turned out for their annual celebration evening held at the Club on 6 September, with delicious food and fun-filled entertainment provided by host and comedian Dave Burke and Scott Radburn (The Four Kinsman). Bobbie joined the Club as a ‘Lady Member’ in 1973. In 1980, she joined the Sub-Branch by virtue of her service record. She was a Member of the Sub-Branch Committee from February 1985 and was elected to the Club’s Board in 1989. After some years as Deputy President of the Sub-Branch and Deputy President of the Club, she became Club President in 1995, serving in that role for 9 years. Bobbie is one of the few women in the state to have Life Membership in both the RSL and an RSL Club. Bobbie has always been very active with the Club – Women’s Auxiliary, Indoor

Bowls and Youth Club – and is recognised by her peers through this award for her continuous contribution to the Club. Congratulations Bobbie. The Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club Member of the Year is selected from a pool of candidates nominated by their peers from the 12 Sporting and Social Clubs within the RSL Club. The Club Board decides the overall winner.

20 Years Service: Congratulations Brad! Congratulations to TAB and KENO Co-ordinator, Brad Thoroughgood, who celebrated 20 years with CHPRSL at the end of September. Brad started at the Club as a casual, working across many areas of the Club – mostly in bars and then later in the back office. Today most people will be familiar with seeing Brad around the Main Bar and in the TAB where he works overseeing the operations of the area. A big thanks to Brad for his hard work and commitment to the Club!

Nominations for Life Membership Now Open Members wishing to nominate a member for Life Membership are requested to forward details to the CEO by Monday, 19 January 2015. In accordance with Section 23 of the Club’s Constitution, the nominee must have rendered outstanding service to the Club and must have not less than 15 years continuous membership of the Club. The nomination should include name of nominee, private address, badge number and period of membership, together with periods of voluntary work and any other relevant details that will support the nomination. The Board of Directors consider all nominations for Life Membership and may make recommendations for Members to consider at the Annual General Meeting. Chevron 7

CHPRSL provides seed funding for specialised perinatal loss clinic

Paul Kougias and Dean Thomas from CHPRSL with Nick Evans, Ingrid Rieger, Diana Bond and Adrienne Gordon from RPA Newborn Care and Robert Ogle – Director, Women and Babies

CHPRSL has become RPA Women and Babies’ principal partner in establishing the first clinic in NSW to provide an integrated support system for families who have experienced pregnancy and infant loss - iSAIL Clinic. The Club has provided seed funding to establish the highly specialised perinatal loss clinic. The clinic will provide an integrated support system for families who have experienced pregnancy and infant loss. It will be a multidisciplinary best practice service to facilitate management, care, support and education to bereaved families.

The iSAIL Clinic will be established with a part-time clinic manager and a specialised bereavement counsellor. Ongoing support and information will be provided to families as will staff education and support. The clinic’s location is yet to be finalised, however it will be in an appropriate setting away from the general antenatal clinics at RPA Hospital.

New project to revitalise Camperdown Bowling Club gets underway

Dean Thomas with Ingrid Rieger from RPA Newborn Care

former Mar rickville Mayor Jo Haylen with Canterbury-Hurl stone Park RSL Club CEO Dean Thomas

CHPRSL has formed a wholly-owned subsidiary, Camperdown Project Pty Ltd, to manage the revitalisation of the former Camperdown Bowling Club site on Mallett St, Camperdown. Once approved, Camperdown Project will be responsible for leasing, upgrading, managing and operating the Mallett St premises.

The site, located alongside Camperdown Park, includes a clubhouse and two adjoining bowling greens. Camperdown Project is working on finalising a DA to submit to Council. Proposed features include:

Camperdown Project’s vision for the former bowling club site is to develop a community-friendly inner west venue accessible to people of all ages. The goal is to revive this community facility ensuring it becomes a recreational hub with a vibrant food and beverage offer that local residents and visitors can be proud of.

• A food and beverage facility with a mix of indoor and covered spaces

We believe it makes good sense, as an experienced business operator with funds to invest in the community, that we continue to seek opportunities where we can use our expertise, while diversifying our business, to maximise value for our Members and our relevance to the community.

• Converting an existing bowling green into a mixed-use community space and ‘urban farm’ concept

• Meeting spaces for community groups • A casual lawn area / children’s play area. Ahead of the DA submission, Camperdown Project will be working with its management team, builders and architects and liaising with community groups and local residents ahead of the DA submission. We look forward to keeping you informed with the progress of this exciting project. Chevron 9
