PRESIDENT’S REPORT Dear Fellow Members, We’re pleased to bring you the year’s first edition of Chevron – filled with great Member offers, an excellent line-up of entertainment and of course the latest Club news.

A warm welcome to Members of Marrickville RSL Club to which most are receiving Chevron for the first time. We trust you will find the arrival of this magazine in your letterbox to be a useful read of what your Club has to offer.

The year is already off to a great start with events like ‘Icecapades’ and our traditional Australia Day celebrations proving very popular. Membership also paid dividends for one lucky Member who participated in our ‘Join & Win’ promotion, and drove home in a brand new Volkswagen this February!

This month, the Club kicks off the 2016 NRL season in great form, with a launch event on Friday 4 March at 7pm.

The excitement doesn’t stop there for NRL fans. Not only will you see all the action on the big screen in the Main Bar but you’ll have the opportunity to join the Friday Footy Fanatics, in its second year now, offering even more value through a range of exclusive promotions and giveaways throughout the footy season. See page 6 or the Club website for further details.

Easter marks the start of a very busy time at the Club and I’m sure many of you will want to mark the dates 13, 20 and 28 March in your diary for some affordable family fun. There’ll be an Easter Bonnet Parade for the little ones on Sunday 13 March, an Easter Fun Fair on Sunday 20 March in addition to our two huge Easter Egg Raffles. Good Friday sees the return of our popular $5 Fishfest and to wrap up the Easter weekend, we’ll be holding a Movie Marathon on Monday 28 March, from 10am. Please check our website for more details.

On a more important note, we’re expecting this year’s ANZAC events to be even more popular than ever, with the community joining us again in the continuation of our Centenary of ANZAC commemorations.

Please note that if you intend to attend this year’s Anzac Day Dawn Service, we will commence 15 minutes earlier than last year, so be sure to arrive at the Bert Crook Memorial by 5:15am for a 5.30am start.

We are also proud to confirm that we’ll be hosting a touring exhibition, ‘Australians on the Western Front: 1915-18’ at the Club from June 3 to July 2. The exhibition, which commemorates the contribution of Australians in France, presents a special opportunity to view curated material from the Australian War Memorial’s National Collection. This will be the first of three commemoration exhibitions that your Club will be hosting over the coming three years.

As always at this time of year, I encourage you all to read the accompanying ‘Year In Review 2015’ that not only highlights the many achievements of last year, but also includes important information pertaining to our upcoming Annual General Meeting.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING Icecapades The coolest fun in town last Summer School Holidays!

The Icecapades Ice Skating Event was held from the 6-20 January in Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL’s Auditorium and was certainly something to skate home about.

The sun sizzled but the ice was cool fun for those steamy Summer days as kids and adults spun, swirled and snowplowed across the rink.

The Friday Disco and Skate nights hosted by ‘Kids Go Crazy’ had everybody getting their groove on and the Ice Shows were a beautiful spectacular of how the experts make skating look so easy.

The Christmas break can be long, expensive and those arduous words of “I’m bored” are undoubtedly echoed through all households. Icecapades was definitely a new and exciting way to entertain the whole family in a safe and relaxing environment – plus it didn’t break the bank!

Australia Day Beach Party at Hurlstone Park Australians celebrate their national day, Australia Day with fun in the sun so Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club hosted a Beach Party to celebrate Australia Day 2016. Members and guests rode the giant wave, The Endless Summer Beach Party band had the Main Bar jiving and hundreds chose to vote for the $10 Lamb Rack. Australians all, let us rejoice as Australia Day celebrates what has brought, and continues to bring, Australians together.

TIMELINE: Australia in

the First World War, 1916 1916

In early 1916, the Australian divisions joined the British Army in France and Belgium. At last the Australians had arrived in the war’s main battle theatre. Here, on the Western Front, they met a new form of fighting; for them this was to become a year of terrible sacrifice.

1916 was the halfway point in four years of slaughter. For the French, there was the horror of the battle of Verdun. For Britain and the Empire forces – and the French who were also there – the period is remembered for the series of battles known as the First Battle of the Somme.

The British and Commonwealth casualties from this fighting totalled an appalling 420,000, and the French lost 204,000. Combined with the German losses, there were more than one million battle casualties on the Somme.

For Australia, there had been few bright spots in a year that seemed to begin well enough but once its troops became committed to the Western Front battles from July, their war quickly soured, with heavy losses and suffering at the front and widespread mourning at home.

In the attack at Fromelles, the cost in lives had been the highest in any 24-hour period in the war, while the casualty rate in the six weeks at Pozières was the worst ever experienced.

Then there was the conscription referendum which caused widespread and long-lasting divisions in the Australian population.

The Australians had played a full part in 1916.

The Somme offensive did not achieve its goals, but it was one of a series of hammer blows that eventually weakened the German Army.

In this war of attrition, the allies suffered similarly but had this advantage, that their burden could be shared between the French, the British and Empire troops, and ultimately, in 1918, the Americans. On 11 November 1918 Germany signed an armistice. The tragedy of so many deaths in battle during the Great War was only exceeded by the failure of this sacrifice to achieve an enduring European peace.

Battle of Romani After several months of long-range patrolling east of the Suez Canal, the ANZAC Mounted Division fought its first major action at Romani.

Battle of Pozières I ANZAC was assigned the task of capturing Pozières Village and moving the line northwards towards Mouqet Farm.

First Conscription Referendum With casualties on the Western Front soon outstripping enlistment, political leaders in Australia raised the issue of conscription.

Battle of the Somme ends The battle of the Somme came to an end before the onset of Winter.

But these terrible years would also see acts of courage, resilience, mateship, innovation, leadership and loyalty that would define the character of Australia’s “Digger”, and indeed our nation.
